It’s back. After a lengthy renovation, opening night for the New and Improved Destiny City Planetarium is just around the corner! And to celebrate the reopening of this local landmark, the D.C. Earth and Space Museum is proud to announce an OPEN CASTING CALL for a MURDER MYSTERY GAME to be played at the museum prior to the MIDNIGHT PREMIERE of the new planetarium show.
The plot synopsis for the game is given as follows:
Quote: An influential scientist is struck dead while demonstrating their newest invention before a crowd of hundreds. It must have been sabotage! But the scientist had lots of potential rivals lurking around the lab… who done it?
AVAILABLE ROLES* include:
The Scientist
The Ex-Spouse
The Lover
The Collaborator
The Rival
The Intern
The Financial Backer
*All roles are gender-flexible
Given the nature of the performance, the hammier you can play – the better! To audition, simply leave your name and an in-character description of your role’s motivations for killing the scientist, or an argument for why you are innocent. We will be casting our game from the most persuasive of these!*
*Not all roles are required to be filled before the game can be played.
Not up for acting the part? Then how about some detective work! Premiere attendees will be asked to judge for themselves who they believe to be the murderer. Those guessing correctly will be entered into a drawing for a FREE YEAR PASS to the museum and all associated events, as well as free planetarium tickets for themselves and a friend!
The timeline for this event will be determined based on player availability. Currently, the plan is to have an establishing group RP, to break into smaller threads to question the suspects for a set amount of time, and then reconvene for fun, prizes, and a revelation of the murderer!*
*This murder mystery game may potentially include actual murder.
OOC prizes are still being determined, but we will hopefully have some!

To clarify, "actors" will be given more information about the plot of this event, while "attendees" will have to wait and see how it unfolds. We have no plans to actually kill anyone's characters. I can't tell you any more without spoiling!
This plot will probably run within the next month, over a weekend.

Audition: Why in the world would I do it? C'mon, it's not like I had anything to gain by getting rid of the old man. My internship was a pretty sweet deal--get his coffee, transcribe his notes, and when I graduate I get a job, a real job as a real scientist! Here! Making pretty decent money, too. And he's a lot less onerous than the other guys. They were kind of a group of serious letches.
I mean, sure, with him gone I do have the advantage of access to all his notes. I won't pretend like I didn't know he named me in his will to get all that stuff--after all, he's got rivals, everyone knows that partner's untrustworthy, and obviously I'm his protege. I'd never do anything he wouldn't do himself. Really, though, it's kind of unreasonable for me to honor a dead man who was kind of a jerk. And if I wanted to, say, take this research and use it for things that he definitely wouldn't have approved of, taking my own learning in new and exciting directions... new and excitingly profitable directions... the kind that can really make a career if a girl plays her cards right... It'd be a risk, wouldn't it, but to make an omelette you've got to break some eggs.
Still! Why would I trade a sure thing for a venture that's all risk, all the time?

Why? But I had to! The no good black-hearted scoundrel had double-crossed me!
The project had been my work, my vision. All I had needed was the backing of a more influential member of the scientific community. Working with him, my project gained credibility, press and funding. Of course, it was his face on the work, and I understood the necessity, even though it cut deep into my pride. I needed him, true, but over time, he forgot that he needed me! I was treated like an assistant, as if it wasn't my hand that guided every stage of the project! As if it hadn't been my notes that he worked from, every day! His ego was insufferable, but still I bore through. Anything for the sake of scientific advancement, I told myself!
I held up under these conditions until he dropped the final straw. The night before the unveiling, I was up late, working my fingers to the bone preparing. At last, I would be able to stand beside him on the podium and receive the recognition my genius deserves! That's when I overheard him discussing his devious treachery. Bragging. As if I wouldn't find out! As if he could walk all over me, just because he had connections. He planned to cut me out! To declare the project fully his! No fifty fifty cut, as agreed at the beginning, but one hundred percent his! Every patent that he had submitted had gone without my name, every grant to him. All to keep it reputable, to keep the money coming in. There was no way I could prove anything, he said. Well, I didn't had to, did I? Now he's in no position to reap the rewards of my work. Now I'm the one who cut him out, of life! Hahahahahaha!!

What? Why would I want to kill him? Okay, maybe i was a bit jealous of him getting that scholarship grant in collage and he did finish his dream project before me but really I'm innocent! I mean who wants to go to jail over some petty disagreements when you've got such a perfect life ahead of you? I've still got that job at the research labs where i'm some mooches assistant doing absolutely nothing with my skills. It's a good gig and it pays. Jail so doesn't pay and you aren't allowed to do any experiments in your cell.
Fame, fortune, gorgeous lovers, fast cars ... all of its' waiting for me if i could just get the money to fund my project. Which you know, again, I'm totally not jealous that he got the money first and all. Even if I should have been the one to get it.
By the way did you see his intern? She totally looked like the sort to do it. Why not ask her? I mean she's going to get -everything- now that he's dead right?

Audition: Science is my life! He just did not understand how important everything was to me, and he took everything for granted! That gorgeous hair of his was what got him those grants, really. It certainly wasn't any genius. He couldn't have genius'd his way out of a paper sack, let me tell you! It's that damned hair of his! The coif that defied all definition both in shape and color! Why!
Mind control, that's what.
And I found out about it! I was about to expose him for a fraud and hairography to impress the board for financing! All that product for the perfect 'do meant checks behind given out faster than they could be signed! But I didn't do it - someone beat me to the punch! The amount of hairspray the guy used alone would have made him a fire hazard, but... why are you looking at me like that? My hair is fine. No, I didn't do it. Look, his spouse? Well his ex-spouse because she was so jealous of all that attention, she must've taken out a life insurance policy or something. It certainly wasn't me, as much as I would have liked to!
Damn him and that perfect 'do...

Audition: He's dead?! About time. That b*****d was ripping me off for all I had. I've invested so much time and money in this nut-job's work, and how does he repay me? With more debt. The b*****d didn't even include me in his thanks for all the people who helped him with his crazy invention! Millions, he said. He actually convinced me that it would make millions in just the first couple weeks. Bullshit. That man was a con-artist! Oh sure, he had all the blue-prints drawn out and it seemed like a really great idea and that it would actually work. But then I get receipts for things he didn't have in the original proposal. He had to "modify" things, he said. He had to "adjust" the amount of supplies he needed in order to finish it. I'm not stupid, but I might a well be with the way that b*****d scientist ripped me off!
Yeah, I wanted him dead, but I didn't kill him! Why would I kill him when that would mean risking even more of my money on paying for lawyers to get me out of it? And all of my money? Wasted. He didn't even have that damn thing insured! Who knows how it actually works! But you can be assured that whoever gets that thing, I will be taking to court and sue their a**. I want every penny I put into that piece of junk back! And then I'm going to sue whoever murdered the b*****d and get whatever money they gained from all this!
Talk about a waste of time!

Audition: Why would I bother killing my ex-husband? We’re not together anymore. And thank God for it. It was worse that my first marriage. You have no idea how much of a relief it was to finally be done with it. Now I don’t have to listen to him rave about his work, like he was going to “change the world.” Please. I don’t have to listen to him snore at night, either. That was horrible. He kept me up all night! I eventually had to sleep in one of the guest rooms, it was so unbearable! Of course, that didn't benefit out relationship at all.
Honestly, I was over him. Still am. He could do whatever he wanted with whomever he wanted to do it with and I wouldn't care. He could spend all his time working. He did when we were married. He was hardly ever home. And, of course, when he was, he hardly paid any attention to me. He brought his work home with him. What’s so important about what he’s doing that he would care about it more than he cared about me? Or he could be with his lover. He didn’t have time for me, but he had time for a lover? Have you questioned them yet? Perhaps someone was getting a little too greedy and wanted to get their hands on his money.
Me? I don’t need his money. I got more than enough of it through the divorce. And it was all well deserved. Now I can live comfortably. What more could I possibly have to gain?

Audition:
*Morgan sits poised on the edge of a desk, looking distraught.*
I’ve always needed a strong man, someone to depend on, to take care of me. The Scientist was just that. Dependable. My love! My little Snickerdoodle! *The Lover pauses and sobs lightly for all of a second before abruptly stopping. Then she glances up, wiping away nonexistent tears.*
He was only useful if he was alive! Why would I want him dead? A stiff corpse isn’t the kind of stiff I need, if you know what I mean. And Honey, I can tell you, the Scientist had some talent. The lab wasn’t the only place he experimented. The man was into some weird things. But I put up with it. I had my reasons. He was a sweetheart, but rumor has it his project was about to make it big. He was on the verge of making some big breakthrough. Fame and fortune were right around the corner. What could I possibly gain from his death? There’s no ring on this finger, I don’t get a thing. Last year of my life, wasted, I’ll never see a dime. … Dime, that was a little nickname for the Scientist.
I bet it was his ex-spouse. Always jealous. Thinks I stole away her man. I don’t think she ever really got over it. Me? This dame’s gotta move on, get on with her life. Find someone new.

What a fantastic round of auditions! I think we've got everyone we need, except for THE INSPECTOR THE INSPECTOR is the person who steps in and declares it to be a crime scene and gets everyone to play.
