PROLOGUE: THE EVER PRESENT EMOTION
YEAR: 2589
The fog of the War still hangs thick in the air choking the earth. Helios fights a daily battle with these clouds in his attempt to warm the Earth and fuel life, refusing to accept that his effort may be futile. The tall skyscrapers made of a new industrial plastic harder than steel stand as mere skeletons coated in their own dust; a testament to mankind's endless hubris and the destruction that quickly follows.
The wind blows harsh and cold through the scattered colonies of humanity that have managed to survive the five years of tyranny pitted against tyranny, the clash of armies, and the hell that rained from the sky. Race and social status no longer separate man from man. Everyone is seen as a human united with his fellow man in suffering and sorrow.
However, after 3 months of sorrow and survival, mankind is starting to get back on its feet and man has more time for reflection and thought, and suspicion. For not all of the survivors emerged from the rubble unscathed.
The genetics of the human being are a complex and variegated into a tapestry of chromosomes and DNA. Genes define who we are and rarely do they change but certain conditions designed by Mother Nature may bring about change. The radiation from the nuclear blasts for example changed a group of individuals within the human population and it was only a matter of time before they were to be discovered and feared for their "gifts".
Fear is a common emotion that man should have mastered long ago yet it always manages to get the best of him in the end, and fear drives man to irratioinality. So it comes to pass that this emotion invades the colonies and grips their hearts in icy bondage, and the gifted persons are rounded up and driven away from society into the gray wilderness of death. At the same time, a mysterious illness born of the nuclear explosions begins to ripple through the humans scattered worldwide quickly putting an end to the frail bodies of mankind.
Death is gathering his harvest. Only certain humans are spared. They are called the "gifted". By some strange miracle, the Syndrome has altered their DNA, unlocking the true power of the brain to grant these individuals powers or "gifts". However, mankind in its paranoia sees these "gifted" individuals as threats to society, and thus they are cast into the wilderness to die. But fate has other plans.......
Those whom mankind outcasted are mankind's only hope if the human population is to survive the SYNDROME.
