Prelude to a Brilliant Foolishness Crysta: *Bounces in all giggly, happily twirling a thin gold wand between her fingers like a baton* ^_^Jayke: *Wandering about outside the school, admiring the vegetation and completely ignoring the fact that he should be on the field with the rest of the gym class, running laps*Crysta: *Since this is her free period she has nothing pressing to worry about. As she spies Jayke her eyes light up and she stops twirling her wand. Holding it excitedly, she dashes across the grass to throw herself at Jayke in a wild hug* HI!!Jayke: *Jerks his head up in alarm until he sees who it is* Oh hi. XDCrysta: *Without hesitation she hugs herself to Jayke. Her lips pulled upwards into a happy smile* Hi Jayke! How are you? Are you happier?Jayke: *Feels rather awkward in the hug, but seeing as there's no one really around, and it IS Crysta, he doesn't mind as much* Well.....I guess so. As much as I can, I guess. XDCrysta: *She leans back a bit and then hops back from him* Good! ^_^ I am glad your happier. Are you having more fun with school? What about home?Jayke: *Puts his hands in his pockets the instant he's released and shrugs* Eh, about the same as usual with school. But home's been fun. Deston and Lilian introduced me to this really awesome drink called Yerba Mate. ^^Crysta; I don't think I've heard of that before. *She honestly responds. Her eyes then light up a bit and she throws her arms wide. Spinning around in a quick circle she excitedly continued* In science class we put goldfish on microscope slides! We soaked a cotton ball in water and created fishy air tanks! *Giggling as she spins she looked upwards* The fish breathed the water in the cotton ball the way we do from scuba tanks, and we were able to zoom in close on their tails! It was so pretty!Jayke: *Blinks a little* That sounds kinda mean for the fish.......but their tails DO look nice, don't they? XDCrysta: *She stops spinning and staggers a bit as the world continues to spin for her* Oh the fish are fine. If you put the cottonball over their eye then they lay still like they are sleeping. We put them back in the tank and they swam around just fine. The teacher says when we are done with the lessons we can take one home! I am going to get a little bowl for mine and paint the outside to look like clouds on the back. That way mine will be a fling goldfish!Jayke: *Chuckles a little* I'd imagine any fish YOU take home would catch your vibes and be the happiest fish around. XDCrysta: *Her eyes brighten a bit more* You think so? *With a happy giggle she takes her wand and tucks it back into her ponytail* Thank you Jayke!Jayke: *Shrugs modestly* Hey, it's true you know. Animals are very sensitive to the vibes their people give out. It's why stressful, high-strung people have stressful, high-strung pets, and calm people have calm pets. Stands to reason my pets would be wild, since I am too. XDCrysta: *She get's a bit of a grin on her lips* Is that so? Well then! I'm going to give you my goldfish then! I wanna see a Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiild Goldfish!!!Jayke: *Stammers* Wha.....me? B-but........it's yours, Crysta!Crysta: *She steps forwards to lightly clap her palms over Jaykes cheeks with a laugh* And I want it to live with you! I think it'll be super good for you! You know, people aren't the only ones that effect pets, pet's effect people too! Maybe the goldfish won't go wild, maybe you'll go mellow like a fish!Jayke: *Eyes widen as his face is clapped on, then busts out laughing (not unkindly) at her theory* Me go mellow like a fish? XD If my hippie parents can't mellow me out, then I don't know if one little fish would make any difference. XDCrysta: *Jaykes laughter only makes her feel more content, and she leans in so she can bug her eyes as big as they can go while looking at Jayke* Be one with the fish Jayke! Ooooooooooooooone with the fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiish!Jayke: *Thinks 'she's officially crazy', but doesn't mind in the least; compared to the little idiots he went to school with and the bigger idiots who taught them, she was honest and genuine* But what if I really DO get one with the fish and end up all suffocating? Who's gonna get me a big water-soaked cotton ball? X3Crysta: *She actually get's a considering look on her face and then grins* I got it! You can like, get in touch with your fishy self while taking a bath! ^_^Jayke: *Grins* Maybe I should take the fish out and we can BOTH have a nice bath. XDCrysta: *She takes a step back and claps her hands in excitement. Jayke had such neat ideas at times* Oh that's a perfect idea! You and the fishy can really get to be familar with each other! *Her eyes sparkled as she reaches up to touch her wand stuck in her hair* I bet you'd totally be good with animals Jayke!Jayke: *Beams* I AM good with animals, remember? I'm the scary boy with the wild bird and dog for a pet and who pulled the ears off of a neanderthal for doing the same to a rabbit. XD And I'd still do it again.Crysta: *She continues to smile more and more brightly at Jayke. He was so..in tune with things!* Your fantastic jayke! I am so glad you are here, I think you and Taku are like the only ones who really understand me too ^_^Jayke: *Almost a little disappointed that she didn't seem to notice his quip about the ear-pulling thing, of which he was still pretty proud of* Who's Taku?Crysta: *Without hesitation she stepped on up to Jayke and reached to grab his arm into her own. With a extreme familiarity she leaned her head against his and giggled* Takuma. He's a older boy here. He respects the spirits but he's very very quiet. I think he has a lot going on in his head. He has somber spirits that follow him. Not like you. You've got warrior spirits!Jayke: Huh...... *Wonders if he's seen this guy before and just not noticed* Well, if you're with me and you see him, be sure to point him out to me, willya? XD **Grins over at Crysta, not as bothered as he ought to be about her obvious familiarity, though if any of the other boys saw it, he'd have to put out their eyes*Crysta: *She smiled happily and gave a nod of her head* Yup yup sure! And I got a secret to tell you too! But after school. Your so so so going to be happy Jayke! Just you wait! 8DJayke: *Looks around* Well, why not now? I can just walk home now; it's not as though they've never had me play hookie before. XDCrysta: >.> *She glanced around slowly and bit her bottom lip* I shouldn't skip my last classes. I wanna go to art. Can I just meet you at your house later?Jayke: *Shrugs* Okay; s'aright with me. Deston and Lilian won't mind at all; may even share some of their yerba mate with you. XDCrysta: *A spark of excitement flickers through her face* I got a better idea! When you go home, open your window and tie a red shirt outside of it so I know which one it is! Then just sit back and wait for the coolest thing EVER that you have ever seen!!Jayke: *Grins* Okay! But just so you know, mine's kind of in a woodsy area; hope that's okay for you super-wicked super-secret plan. XDCrysta: *With a secretive smile she replied* Oh trust me! You gimme the address and I'll find it! You just better be waiting for me! *She warned him with a wag of her finger*Jayke: Okay! *Leans close to whisper in her ear* I'll have the red shirt ready! *Waves and turns to dash away down the street*

It took all of Crysta's self control to keep herself calm for the last few classes of the day. Her eyes kept drifting towards the window, though her typical daydreams were not about dancing with spirits or having fun adventures. It was nothing new for her to daydream of course, but this time it was different. She was going to do something fantastic after school! She wished she could have just skipped school today, but her sister was watching her absences rather closely after the last time she cut school early.
She said that if Crysta kept on telling people the spirits were telling her what to do, they were going to break them up. They would put Crysta in a different home and make her take pills. The threat was frightening enough to keep her in line. At least in her mundane life. The truth of her life now was so much better now that she had her wand. Crysta reached a hand up to play with the butterfly topped wand currently stuck in her ponytail like a decoration hairstick.
Once her final class was let out, Crysta literally raced through the halls and towards the street Jayke lived on. She didn't stop running until her head spun from lack of air. Oops! She had forgotten to breath while she ran. Pausing, Crysta would have tittered in laughter at her foolishness. But later...later! Her eyes flicked over Jaykes house. Now...where was that shirt?

Having easily meant what he said when it came to cutting class, all Jayke had to do was walk home in his gym clothes. He never really took anything he cared about to school, and he had more clothes at home that he could put on, not to mention a shower that he could take without worry of being eyeballed by perverted chunky meatheads who had to look at others naked in order to enforce their own ideas of manliness.
He walked in the door just in time to hear the last of a conversation Deston was having on the phone in his usual mellow tone. "Hey come on, man; it's not my fault you can't keep track of my kid. He probably went off to get a soda or something, or he's on his way home right now. Uh-huh. Well, it's nobody's fault for that, so don't beat yourself up, and I won't beat myself up, is it a deal? Oh......well, if that's how you feel, I'm not stopping you man. Yeah. Bye." Jayke was shuffling out of his shoes when Deston walked into the entryway, his face grave but his eyes twinkling. "Come home early again, little dude? Your teacher wasn't very happy; got the principal all hyped up at us. Think he could use some of our special new drink?" He gave Jayke a wink, which he promptly returned. "Sorry Deston; I just had to come home; I'm getting ready for a playdate."
"Really? Aww man, that's awesome, little dude! Just make sure we get to meet them when they come over, m'kay?" Deston gave Jayke one more smile and wandered back into the depths of the house, leaving Jayke to make his own way to his room. Not even pausing to look around it and make sure it was suitable for a guest, Jayke rummaged through his laundry for a red shirt. He found one that he thought could do with some air anyway and tied it to the handle of his window, leaving it open as he turned to survey his messy room. Wrinkling his nose, Jayke set about to spend the rest of the afternoon tidying it up, looking outside once in a while for a glimpse of Crysta.

Hmm...the house looked so nice. So much more in tune with the elements then most of the other dwellings. Crysta would have loved to given up living in a apartment complex in exchange for a hut in the woods. Not that Jayke lived in a hut in the woods, but it had more green around it then most.
Crysta stopped a little ways away from the house and began to peer about. She searched until she found a nice spot behind a hedge that she could duck. Oh she was so utterly excited she was terrified she'd forget to keep breathing again. Exhaling slowly she knelt down and tugged the wand from her hair. Crysta ran her hand lovingly over the length of it, then with a small swish, called on the magic within. It was a thrilling feeling, to feel her body wrapped up in the magic. In mere seconds, the glittery sparkling swirl of light faded and she was dressed in her magical outfit. Crysta clutched the wand tightly to her chest. It only took her another moment of thought, before another stream of glittering light flowed from the tip of her wand. Wrapping around her, Crysta's form rapidly shrank.
In the matter of moments a small butterfly sized Crysta flitted from behind the hedge. The little butterfly clips on the back of her outfit were now securely attached to her back between her shoulder-blades. Crysta darted up and around the house in search of the red shirt. Once she spied it, she made a direct beeline...or rather butterfly line, for the open window. She did not land on the windowsill, but rather hovered with some difficulty in the opening. "Jayke! Jayke! Jake!" She called out excitedly.

Jayke was still busy picking up his pile of clothes and sorting the clean from the clean-ish, he almost didn't notice the tiny form fluttering in through his window. But of course he was always careful with his movements in the presence of small creatures, so the instant he caught a tiny flicker of movement over by his open window, he paused in the midst of tossing a clean-ish shirt onto a pile, not wanting to scare whatever it was away.
At first when he turned his head, keeping the rest of his body still, he thought he was looking at a butterfly; so small and dainty, and yet.....the body seemed somehow off. A bit larger than normal.....maybe it was a rare species that nobody had seen yet! He should take a good look at it, so that he could give a description later on as he looked it up. Imagine if he found a new type of butterfly, the kind that he could protect as an endangered insect! Excited by the prospect, he squinted a little at the flittering creature, and blinked in surprise as he SWORE he heard a tiny voice over by his window. It sounded like Crysta......had this butterfly come ahead to announce her arrival? Maybe she could ask it to hold still so he could get a better look at it. Rising up slowly, Jayke walked over to the window with slow, deliberate steps so he wouldn't frighten the creature, and instead looked past it and outside for any sign of his friend.

Oh come on! Where was the look! She wanted the look! Crysta's eyes flickered up to watch as Jayke would stop his cleaning and look at her. Yes yes! Now...Look!! yet it did not come right away. Jayke seemed to look past her. Dang it! She watched the larger boy approaching the window and actually looking out past her. Tired by the effort to hover, Crysta dropped down onto the windowsill and placed her hands on her knees. She leaned over a little and fanned her wings slowly. Oh! Now that felt rather good. The tiny breeze cooled her down quickly. Now he could focus on Jayke! Looking up, she started to wave her hands over her head and gave a small jump. "Jayke! Look down you silly! It's me!! I'm the butterfly!" She called out excitedly.

No sign of Crysta anywhere....... Jayke's nose wrinkled in confusion. Why would she hide after seeing him come to the window, and even after sending him her little messenger? He saw the butterfly drop down to flap its wings lazily in the breeze, and he couldn't resist smiling at it. He was about to return to looking out the window, when something caused him to do a double-take. He looked down at the butterly, then actually crouched down so that he was at eye level with the window sill, looking at the 'butterfly' with eyes that suddenly grew wide.
No....it wasn't possible......was it? He had heard of stories from his mother and father; his REAL mother and father; about people who could inhabit the bodies of animals, but to actually BECOME the animal? And especially one as small as a butterfly! How was it even possible? Was he seeing things after all? He knew Deston had mentioned that a kid his age might feel a little strange taking Yerba Mate........ But then he heard the tiny voice, and he knew that even if he could imagine the sight of the little Crysta-butterfly, he couldn't imagine the sound to go with it. "Crysta.....? Is that you?"

Finally! Crysta stood up as tall as her little five inch self could manage. She gave her dark hair a toss back over her shoulder and fanned her wings wide to frame her. Now he was seeing her! Crysta waited for Jayke to bring himself down to her level, sort of, then took a little hop forwards. As she did, she fluttered her wings once, to help carry her a bit further. Crysta's smiling face brightened all the more when Jayke would almost trip over her name. "Isn't it wonderful Jayke!?" She exclaimed. She took her wand, which was now the size of a staff in her current form, and she swung it over her head in a excited twirl.
"I am the Priestess of the Spirits! They have acknowledge me and given me the power of Butterflies! A beautiful goddess of a woman gave me the way to unlock my inner power Jayke! Isn't it wonderful! I can do so much good now!!"

Jayke felt his eyes crossing as Crysta walked closer to his face, fluttering her butterfly wings and twirling what looked like a wand that was small enough for him to pick his teeth with. Was she a magician? A descendant of a wisewoman? Even if she were, Jayke had never sen magic quite like this. Some of the children at school thought him dense for even believing in the stuff; for some reason they always seemed to assume that meant he believed in stuff like overweight fat men coming down chimneys and magical rabbits that laid colored eggs. Sure every culture had it's traditions and thus its magical beings, but he had to admit that even those were a stretch to the imagination.
He carefully moved his arms so taht he could rest themon the windowsill, his chin propped up on his hands as he listened to Crysta's tiny little voice. "A Goddess? What did she look like? Are you sure she wasn't some kind of wisewoman who put a spell on you?" He almost asked what good she intended to do as a butterfly, but to him there was just no way to say it without sounding either mean or discouraging.

Crysta watched as Jayke would settle himself down so he could better look at her. She knew she looked so small and delicate...but in her mind she felt as beautiful as...as..a field of wildflowers! Her delight would not be dimmed, not even a little bit. Crysta walked herself back and forth before Jayke. There was no way she could just sit here now! She felt way too much energy right now!!
"Oh she was beautiful Jayke! She had beautiful pink hair and she had this melodious voice! She said her name was Aphrodite, but said she wasn't the goddess." Crysta turned to wag a finger at her friend. "I don't believe her though. I've never seen someone look so beautiful at all, and she was so kind Jayke. I felt so comfortable around her. I was so sad when this evil little bad thing showed up and ruined our meeting. I have never felt so...whole Jayke." Crysta flitted her wings and with a small jump, fluttered towards him so she could just...attach herself to his nose in a hug. "I had to share with you Jayke. You deserve to know something like this. Doesn't it just feel wonderful!?"

Jayke couldn't help but chuckle as he sat there, keenly listening to his now-tiny friend as she described this wonderful woman who had enabled her to turn into a butterfly. His eyes followed her as she pranced around before him, reminding him of Tinker Bell doing a little ballerina-graceful toe-step in front of Peter Pan's freckled nose. The little wand made it seem more and more like she was a tiny little fairy, come to explore the world of the big people. God, if Deston or Lilian saw this! They would either treat her like the queen of the faeries or swear off of the yerba mate forever!
He tried not to move as Crysta's tiny arms embraced his nose, and it was all he could do not to sneeze from the butterfly wing's powder; he could probably blow her right out the window and dash her against a tree by accident. He was going to have to be REALLY careful from now on, at least until......but COULD she??? Suddenly alarmed and doing his best not to show it because of how happy she seemed, Jayke whispered to her as she held his nose, so he wouldn't hurt her tiny ears; "Are you going to be like this from now on? Or can you change back? I mean, it'd be cool if you could fly around and be a real butterfly forever, but people might come looking for you if you don't come back to school. You know, the way they look for me."

He seemed to be in awe. Crysta took a step back after hugging Jaykes nose so she could flutter them without hitting his face with them. Her excitement had not abated any, though she was getting it under control a bit more. She felt so happy. To be able to share this special gift with Jayke felt right. She didn't care if she should not be doing it, Jayke deserved to know! Though, there seemed to be an odd look of concern on his face. Crysta tilte her head, then blinked as jayke would voice clear concern. Blinking, she looked over her shoulder, then flitted on into his room. Crysta preferred to show Jayke then just tell him. So she gave her wand a quick swish before her. Sparkling light swirled from it's tip and wrapped around her form. Just as it had out in the yard, the light enveloped Crysta, then grew. In a matter of moments she was standing at her normal height, minus the butterfly wings of course. Crysta folded her hands behind her back. "Tee hee!" She giggled excitedly. "You see now Jayke? I can change myself!" Crysta paused for a moment, then unhooked her arms so she could rush towards Jayke and hug him in a impulsive desire to be close to him. "The Spirits are here Jayke! The good and the bad! I can actually fight the bad spirits! I already defeated one! I am going to make the city a better place!!"

Somehow Jayke knew to step back as soon as he saw that tiny little wand wave. He brought his hands up instinctively toward his face as the sparkling light filled his room, highlighting every little spot and making him squint. When he finally put his hands down and stood there, eyes blinking the spots of light from his vision, there was his friend Crysta, standing in the middle of his room and looking as bright and chipper as always. He barely had time to register anything before she was bounding toward him and wrapping him up in a hug.
"So.....you're fighting the bad spirits......as a butterfly?" It seemed so odd and almost silly; a little butterfly going up against the evils of the spirit world! But then again, he had witnessed the power of insects in the past; had witnessed elder's huts fall to termites and watched a stream of siafu consume everything unlucky enough to set foot in their path, like a seething trail of red acid. His friend's biggest worry was probably nothing from the spirit world, but the clumsy and barbaric ways of her fellow classmates, especially the ones who were still de-evolved enough to think that it was cool to crush a butterfly or pull the tiny wings off and watch the remains of the once glorious insect writhe in silent agony on the ground before meeting it's end beneath some b*****d's tennis shoe.
Jayke was just about to ask Crysta if she had already fought any of the bad spirits that she had been appointed to fight, when he heard the door open behind him and Deston walked in, bold as brass. Most teenagers would be appalled at their parental units showing such a lack of privacy, but Jayke was used to it with his foster folks; they really were so laid back, he didn't really care what they caught him doing. As far as they were concerned, he was just 'being himself.' "Well hey there little dudette; Jayke didn't tell me his playdate was a girl. Far out.' Grinning, he held out a steaming gourd, halved and with a gleaming metal straw poking out of it. The smell that drifted from it was earthy and sweet. "Want some yerba mate?"

Crysta felt a deep sense of peace and joy as she hugged him. He understood! Just like she knew he would. He wasn't like her, but she had to share the knowledge with him. He may not be magical, but he did have some kinship with her. She just knew it! "Yes! I have some wonderful magical powers in this outfit. I would show you but I don't want to wreck your things." She replied as she continued to hug Jayke. In the next moment the sound of a door opening clicked. Crysta turned her head with a look of surprise on her face. Oh it was such a good thing she was not small right now! Her eyes blinked a few times and a faint flush crept up into her cheeks. Well. She was only hugging Jayke. It wasn't like they were doing anything wrong.
Crysta stepped back from Jayke and giggled. Oh he talked so funny!! And he looked a little strange too. How delightful! "Playdate? Oh is that what this is?" She asked with a clear teasing voice when she looked at Jayke over her shoulder. She then looked towards the gourd with a curious expression. "What is...that? It smells very nice but I don't think I've ever heard of it before." It was a good thing her magical girl outfit was somewhat easy to mistake for just a prettied dancers outfit!

Still showing no sign of outrage or even annoyance at his fister father suddenly standing there in all his hippie glory offering his friend some of their South American tea drink, Jayke wasn't even so much as embarassed by Deston. He wasn't the type to play catch or go to work every day ina fancy suit and tie, but he was real, he was genuine. And it wasn't as though they were total bums. Deston did various odd jobs around the neighborhood (elderly people especially liked him since he didn't have a tendency to swear if anything broke) and Lilian made a modest sum with her homemade jewelry and the occasional lavish bouquet of wildflowers. So they hadn't exactly told the truth income-wise when they had opted to foster Jayke; the boy believed sincerely that at that point, the agency would have gladly handed him over to a hobo family living in garbage cans like Oscar the Grouch, if it meant never seeing HIM in that building again.
He beamed at Deston as he noded encouragement to Crysta. "It's alright, it's just a harmless hot tea. It's from South America and it's supposed to calm your mind and make you wise, so of course everyone at aschool thinks it's some kind of dope or something. Their loss; the stuff is really good. Down in South America, the tribal people share gourds of yerba mate as a symbol of friendship and goodwill. Bet that's something we'll never learn in school."
