Finally Dendro was feeling like today would be a good day. He had managed to sneak away from the herd, and more importantly that damned Okelani as well, this morning and was enjoying from freedom. Well enjoying was a relative term, he was after all still quite annoyed at the world over what had happened to his hearing, but hey any morning that he didn't have to deal with that bubbly healer had to be good. He had ran fast and hard this morning, ensuring no one from the herd had seen him leave, since knowing his luck she would come looking for him if they did. After running for a good distance Dendro found himself a nice little stream to rest in. The downside of his type was that they really couldn't stay away from water for too long. He had once gone far too long without replenishing the moisture to his skin and had suffered for days after that. Never again would he let that happen. Yes he let it get dry here and there but if he could avoid it at all costs he would seek water whenever possible.

Slipping out from the stream Dendro cast his eyes about the area. So much unknown out there. So much he had not scouted, not that that was his job anymore, but part of him still felt the need to know the lands they lived in. Perhaps he would take some time from his freedom today and do so scout like exploring. First however he was quite hungry. Trotting over to a patch of grass not far from the edge of the stream Dendro lowered his head, clipping off some of the blades.

"Oh, a thousand pardons!"

"My goodness, please excuse me!"

"Oh fratterwurst, pardon me!"

It was a small chorus every mile or so as Bernard managed, someone, to trip, or bump into, or otherwise disturb either the land itself or some creature - even something as small as an insect. After all, one could never be too sure it wasn't a flutter soq, yes? Or maybe they didn't actually get so small . . . He had never seen one before!

The large warhorse after a while decided that his episodes were probably being caused by a lack of water. And thus he drank from the river. And then he thought, "Why, perhaps my entire body needs to be quenched!" and plunged completely into it.

He hadn't expected the current, however, and soon had rode out the river's path until it trickled into a stream. What an odd sight, seeing something as thick-set as a warhorse being pulled along! But he didn't mind it so much - water was far more graceful than he was, and the cooling sensation did wonders.

Eventually he small a small figure grazing by the stream and had to blink several times: why, his eyes weren't lying to him! There was truly a small fish-like horse before him! "Good sir! God sir," Bernard called out, rolling onto his stomach and causing the stream to back up and circumvent his girth. "I must ask how you acquired such glossy fins!"

This wasn't half bad. In fact Dendro had forgotten all about his initial purposes of coming out here, to explore the new lands the herd now lived in, to gather information on food, water and shelter. For once he was willing to just stand here grazing without much thought of anything. There was no annoying Putti around, no old scout buddies mocking him for his lost hearing and most importantly no two-leggers trying to hunt him down. The whole thing was oddly relaxing - a concept that was still quite foreign to him. He had never had a chance to relax before always busy with his duties, but now, for probably the first time in his life he could relax.

Munching away on the grass, Dendro was blissfully unaware of the large stallion that had floated downstream. Had his hearing been in tact he likely would have heard the other speaking to him. But as luck would have it his deaf ear faced the stream and because he decided to not pay attention his good ear heard nothing either. A predator could be coming up behind him making all kinda of noise and he probably wouldn't have noticed. Certainly not something to do, but he didn't care right now.

Slowly he turned so that the stream returned into his field of vision, a mouth full of grass. All was well until he spotted the purple hide of the male. When did he get here? Damnit! Now he remembered why he stayed hidden in his favorite little stand of trees back with the herd. The other seemed to be looking at him strangely. "What the hell are you looking at?" It never occurred to him that this stallion had been talking to him prior, the point was he was looking at him and Dendro didn't like being the centre of attention.

"Your fins, sir!" Bernard repeated patiently, taken aback by the small one's sharp response. Was it rude to ask? Were fins much like the special parts of a stallion's body that should never be mentioned in respectable conversation? But fins were hardly hidden . . .

He shifted a little in the stream, ears tilted back slightly. "I mean no disrespect, sir. I have simply never seen one of your kind before, and it begs the question of both who and what you are." He seemed to somewhat fit the description of what some Soquili called a "kelpie", but . . . much, much smaller by far. Had he perhaps come across a species yet undiscovered?

His fins, the stallion was staring at him because of his fins. What was with the residents of this new land? They were always staring at him like he was some kind of freak of nature. Dendro let out a bit of a snort, really he didn't want to tell this stallion anything but he knew that if he didn't the darn thing would either follow him around until he did or find another Nixie to stare at rudely.

"Dendro, Dendro Auratus." He finally relinquished his name after a few minutes of silence. "I am a Nixie." There answer given, vague as it was, it's not like the stallion had asked for a complete explanation of his physiological traits and a family history. Now he could ask the same thing of the large beast. "And just who and what are you supposed to be?" He questioned in a non too friendly tone. Dendro hated being stared at, be it from strangers or herd members, but especially strangers...and especially when they so rudely snuck up on him.

"Nixie . . . Nixie . . ." It was an unusual word, certainly not anything Bernard had heard before! He blinked at the curt reply, half at this new piece of information, half because, well . . . he didn't expect to have to explain what he was. "Oh my, where are my manners? I'm Bernard, and ah . . . I have a war horse build, if that's what you mean."

Not that he actually felt like a real war horse, but Dendro wasn't asking about that.

"I was just following the current until I washed up here, before you ask that too," he added with a sheepish shrug. "It's so hot . . . You must be feeling it, right? But I've never heard of a nixie! Is it anything like seathies or kelpies?" Which Bernard had also never seen, but had heard of at least. "Are you . . . a mix of their crossbreeding?" ouo

Dendro snorted a bit. A warhorse? He didn't look anything like that, at least not what Dendro picture when he thought of a warhorse. This stallion, while large and obviously somewhat well muscled, didn't look like the brave rush into battle type. In fact the more he spoke the more Dendro was beginning to see him more as a bumbling idiot than anything else. That thought alone almost made the green stallion smile, almost.

"You're damned right it's hot." Oh he could feel it alright. His bloody skin was drying out faster than he liked and soon he would need to return to the water to return moisture to it. He could hold out a bit longer before definitely needing to retreat to the coolness of the water. The others questions made him sigh. They made be new to these lands but couldn't just one Soquili out there understand that he was not a Kelpie...or a Seathi for that matter. "No I'm not a crossbreed. Nixie is a breed of it's own." That answer probably would only cause the stallion to ask even more question so in hopes of preventing such a thing he continued. "Think of it as a Usdia version of a Kelpie. Got it?"
