My hair is light brown but I've been considering going lighter. I've been looking up dyes that are darker shades of blonde, which is what I think I want to go with.

My question is, if I want to go lighter, will I need to bleach my hair first? I'm not aiming to go a whole lot lighter, but I don't want to bleach my hair. I don't have a lot of experience with hair dye, so does anyone else know about this?

are you planning on going to a salon, or doing it at home?

I'd like to do it myself but I know it would be smarter to go to a salon.

It's hard to tell, some people's hair takes better to hair dye than others.

But if you check the boxes, they'll tell you what shade it'll go to from what shade you are. Generally I'd err on the lighter side (like go a few shades lighter than what you want) because you don't want to waste money on dye that doesn't even show up or make a difference.

Honestly I think you'd be fine without bleaching. I've gone from dark dark black to light brown, so yeah.

Okay cool, that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure. Thanks!

bleaching or not, i seriously wouldn't try going lighter at home. darker is okay, but lighter isn't something i recommend. i seriously suggest going to a salon for that sorta thing.

i agree with this.
i think it'd be ok for touch ups but for the first time, get it done professionally, they know how to mix the colors and chemicals and you can ask them what they're doing and why so you know what to look for and can do it yourself the next time.

Sounds legit. I've never dyed my own hair so I figured doing it myself would be a bad idea, but I was going to ask for a friend to help. I guess I'll get it done at a salon, though. :3

I bleached my own hair and dyed it red and I was fine, looked good too. Then I let my boyfriend dye it black and there's bits of red hiding in places. rofl So pretty much you can do it yourself, and it's a LOT cheaper. But if you're not sure of yourself you can go to a salon.

my salon fixes things for free only if they mess up on their part, but if you go in and get something done and you're sure you want it and they do it correctly and you decide you don't like it, then you have to pay for fixing it. idk, that's how my salon works. but if it's just little stuff then they'll do it for free.

This might be a dumb question but if you go to a salon do you have to buy the dye from them or can you bring your own? Because I looked up the place I usually go to, and they charge $30 to dye hair. But I don't know if that includes dye or what.

the fee is $30 per application. they use their own dye, but you have to pay for how much they use. so if they only have to mix enough for one application, then you only have to pay for one application. for someone like me, i have lots of hair so they have to mix enough dye for 3 applications, so i have to pay for 3 applications.

Lightening kit should be fine.

Mainly I just wanted to post about how ecstatic I am that I finally found someone who can ******** spell "dyeing" properly.

Whilst it's true that salon is always better and safer, at the end of the day, hair is hair, you're not going to kill yourself dyeing it at home (unless you're spectacularly unlucky or silly with it).

If you're super super worried, you could just cut out a tiny tiny patch of your hair (in a place that's not obvious) and apply your home dye to it. Wait and see how it turns out.

I just think it's so much cheaper to do it at home, and home hair dye kits are dead easy to use.
