Albert made his way along the bank of the stream, making his way back from scouting out the territory he had claimed as his own for now. All was peaceful for the moment. Creatures were starting to brace themselves for the coming summer heat and humidity. The stream was a small narrow band of water in a muddy and drying patch of mud. The winter had been bitterly cold, but had not dropped enough snow to swell the streams and creeks much this year. And now, the grasses turned brown quickly this year as no rain had fallen yet. Even the ponds had not filled because of this, and it worried him. Water was essential to life, and they were running out. It looked like it was time to maybe move on.
He was reluctant to though. What if the children couldn't find them? How would he know if they were doing alright? Mera dropped by every so often to check on her parents. Damia was off... somewhere. Who knew where that filly was these days. One day he hoped that Damia and Mera would one day get along. But it wasn't yet. Occasionally, he even was able to see his grand-children, and his chest swelled with pride at the thought.

Meru watched her mate pace around, knowing that there was much on his mind. But she couldn't help but grin and kick up her hooves a bit. Free at last! It wasn't that she didn't love her children. Far from it. But foals took a lot of time to raise, and she and Albert hadn't had any time to themselves for a long time now. And finally, all the children had left home to lead their own lives. In some ways, that made her rather sad, because she loved seeing them as they grew up. And they did give her some interesting grandchildren. She was proud of them all. Even more so that she had finally given Albert a son. And that really made her proud. She knew he had wanted one, and now he finally had him.
She twirled around, watching her skirt flutter around her haunches. Finally, they had time alone to themselves. She didn't have to act like a mother anymore, and could just be herself now. Finally! She whinnied happily, and trotted over to Albert, nuzzling him. She knew the lack of water worried him, but she wasn't too worried. He would always take care of her. She nuzzled him, and nipped at his mane lightly.
