The night was cool and clean and clear and the stars were out in force. Nata had decided that this was the perfect night, and had climbed to the highest point she could find to look at the stars. This turned out to be a rock that took some climbing to get up, but had a nice smooth top, big enough for several hyenas to lay out on. She turned onto her back and looked up, ready to look for the pictures in the stars when she heard someone else coming up the rock.
There was a blue wild dog.
"Have you come to watch the stars, too?"

Fizz was currently on his own. A rather unfortunate state of events for a wild dog. He wanted to find a good pack, settle down and be a productive member of a society. Unfortunately it wasn't to be right now.
Thus far there wasn't a pack he had any interest in. They didn't have a space for a particularly crafty former loner. He'd had to become extremely clever in order to survive on his own. Most wild dogs were such successful hunters because of their pack nature. He'd had to learn how to be affective on his own. Part of that was becoming observant, getting to know his prey to the degree that he would know where they would run before they did.
He was climbing a tall rock to be able to watch a herd of antelope when he smelled a hyena. Well she probably wasn't a threat. When he heard her ask if he was up there to watch the stars Fizz blanked for a moment. Why would he want to watch the stars? He didn't have time for that kind of utter nonsense. "No. Why would I do that. They won't feed me." He said as he scrambled up to the top and wandered over to the edge to spy on the herd of antelope near by.

Nata looked up, surprised, and also looked quite amusing with her head held that way. "Stars are food for the soul. Although I don't suppose that helps when your stomach is hungry, does it?"
Nata pulled herself up and stood by the wild dog at the edge of the cliff. "Ah, antelope. I've always been more of a wildebeest girl myself, but antelope is still good eating. Do you want help on a hunt?"

Food for the soul huh? What a bunch of nonsense. "Not a bit." He said in regards to whatever food for the soul was doing nothing for his empty stomach. He looked at her carefully, She didn't look like she'd be much use in hunting. "Well that really depends. Are you any good at hunting? I'm hungry and I don't want to have to track down this herd again."

"No, not really," Nata replied, a mite dreamily. "I sometimes work with other hyenas when they hunt, usually popping out in front of a few preybeasts to scare them the other way so the other hyenas can nab them, but I've found the best use of my time which results in the fullest tummy is scavenging. I am a master scavenger. I passed a wildebeest in the rocks on my way up here; looks like she had broken her neck, poor thing, but I was planning on going to eat her after I stargazed for a while. I can show you where she is, if you like. I doubt the buzzards have gotten to her yet, with the difficulties of flying through rocks, and jackals are such cowards even if they already found the body, we could chase them off."

Fiz preferred fresh meat. But he wasn't snooty enough to turn down a free meal. The less effort he had to extend for food, the better, and quite frankly, he didn't trust this hyena female to be any use in hunting. Not even to scare the beasts in one way or another.
"you must have come up a different way then I did. I don't often get wildebeest. They're too big to pull down on my own." He figured a lone wild dog and one hyena could share an untouched wildebeest without too much bickering.

"I like to take the route less traveled," Nata said, and lead the way off the rock. She started following the same path he had come up, but quickly turned aside to follow a smallish gap, easily passed over in the shadows. "It should still be along here."
The passage was rocky, and a tight squeeze, but it opened up after a few minutes of walking to a bowllike area in the rock. The south side of the wall was a tumble of boulders, and, laying among them, the wildebeest, limbs lolling at awkward angles.
"Jackals haven't even got here yet," she said happily.

Fiz stared at the small crevasse that the crazy hyena had traveled through to get to the top of the rock. "Yes you certainly do like to take the route less traveled. How did you even find this route?" He asked as he maneuvered after her.
Oh what luck, a hyena willing to share, she must be seriously cracked in the head. But far be it from him to complain. Free meal and a wildebeest at that. "That's because jackals are busy following around the main killers of the plains." Which granted, was a sound way to get a meal... sometimes.

"I told you, I watch the stars. I follow the stars, too. That's why I watch them. They take me where I need to be, and my nose fills in the details. That's how I keep fed. And that's how I find friends. You should do it to, you'll be a lot happier. And fatter. Everything ends up following something else anyway, and the stars can see it all from up there."
Nata nosed at the wildebeest, picking the spot to start chowing down. She went for one of the front legs.

Fiz thought about what she said for a moment. Maybe the stars could see the perfect pack for him. He glanced up at them twinkling in the inky darkness. Well maybe so, but he'd never understand them. Not at all.
He chose the rear haunch to start with. It was a delicious part and it tasted so good when he didn't have to catch it himself. "If I was fatter," he said around a mouthful, "I'd find it difficult to catch anything."

Once Nata had swallowed her mouthful, she replied, "That's why the stars lead me to things I don't have to chase, just sit down and start eating. It's the way to go, friend. After I finish here, I'll head back up to that rock and watch them some more and see which way they want me to go."
Nata finished another mouthful of food. It was good eating; she was glad the stars lead her here, and found someone to eat with. Not only was there dinner conversation, but he could help chase jackals away if they started moving in on the kill. It didn't take very long for her to be full, and she scrubbed her muzzle clean of blood against the wildebeest's rough fur.
"I'll be going now, wild dog. Have a good night, and I hope you find some more food soon."

Fiz licked his chops before he answered. "I'm glad you've found your path then, friend Hyena." How strange she was. But anyone who shared abundantly as she appeared to do deserved his respect and friendship. "May the stars guide you truly and bring you happiness."
