Be Mine gasped aloud. The young foal was standing on the edge of a small pond; standing on the very tip of her hooves and staring down at the glossy, dark surface of the water. A face stared back on her and certainly seemed just as shocked as she was. “Hello…?” She gently greeted the watery Kimeti with a soft inquiry. There was no reply and Be Mine tilted her head to the side, which the other foal copied. Oh my. “My name is Be Mine.” She supplied after a while, hoping that would make the other foal want to respond. But there was still nothing. “It must be cold in there...”

Nose in the water, Grasswhistle searched around for any lingering catfish that may still be in the river, but he doubted it, since his newly-aquired watersnake was doing more scaring than catching. He sighed as the snake slithered about in the stream, hissing happily as it splashed around. It seemed to care more about playing about than helping him find lunch.
He shook his head with another sigh. Maybe he should of gotten a lynx, or even an eaglehound instead. He heard those were decent hunters. Loyal and fierce. But... he watched as the watersnake played about, oblivious that his owner was staring at him, and smiled. Pets eventually grew on you. Lifting his head, he called out to it.
"Alright Earthbound, let's try this again, you-"
Before he could finish, the snake quickly swam to the shore and slithered off.
"He-hey! Where do you think you're going!"
It seemed, there was nothing he could do but follow him.

It felt like she had been standing here for a long time waiting for a reply and her young legs were getting tired. With a soft sigh she settled back into a more comfortable position. Scooting closer to the water she peered in again and was met with that same face. “I am happy to meet you today. Even if I don’t know your name…” She told her silent companion, with just the hint of a reprimand. Around her there was nothing but silence, well… silence except for the usual sound; birds chirping, leaves rustling, the constant drip of water nearby. It was rather lonely here; away from her father and brother.
Another sound caught her attention; a slithery, rustling sound that traveled towards her through the brush. Eyes widening curiously she continued to sit beside the pond and waited to see what it was. There was no fear in her heart. Be Mine had never known pain or terror. She just hoped it was something that would speak to her.

Grasswhistle huffed as his hooves pounded the ground, looking around for his watersnake. For a snake, it was surprisingly fast, and he was sure it was long gone by now, lost deep in the swamp.
He sat down with a sigh, dejected that he had lost his first pet, when he heard the bush nearby rustling. Keeping his eyes on it, he watched it as it eventually stopped, and briefly shook again as a familiar brown-blue watersnake darted out.
Quickly standing up, he followed it as it dove into another bush, and as the two of them came out on the other side, they both looked at the young pink foal who was watching them curiously.
Grasswhistle quickly glanced at Earthbound, back at the foal, and then at Earthbound again. Hopefully the snake wouldn`t do anything foolish that might frighten the doe, but as he opened his mouth to call it back, it suddenly darted towards the foal, and Grasswhistle stared in horror as it began to slowly curl up around it. He... he wouldn`t...
He clenched his eyes, expecting to hear the foal scream, but it didn`t happen, and he opened his eyes slowly as he watched the snake gently nuzzle the foal`s cheek with its head, tongue flickering out happily.
Well... that was unexpected.

Be Mine forgot all about her silent friend in the pond; her eyes widening even further as the rustlers in the brush revealed themselves. “Oh…” She blinked owlishly at Grasswhistle, but her gaze quickly moved to the slithery serpent by his side. She didn’t move at all, other than to give a quick flick of her little tail, as Earthbound darted towards and wrapped around her.
The foal giggled as his snake’s head rubbed against her cheek and she tilted her head towards him in response. “Hello there. You’re very pretty.” Be Mine sat contently with her newfound friend and smiled at Grasswhistle. “I am Be Mine.” Hopefully this time she would get a response. “I hope we can be friends.”

A sigh of relief escaped his mouth as he watched the foal giggle at Earthbound's touch. Considering Earthbound was just an egg when he had found him, he saw how the two got along as they were still quite young, and smiled as memories of his own childhood filled his mind.
He smiled as the little foal greeted Earthbound, and he nodded his head as she turned to greet him.
"It is a pleasure to meet you, Be Mine, and yes, I would love to be friends."
He laughed as he watched Earthbound continue to nuzzle the foal.
"And that there, is Earthbound. It seems he's taken quite a liking to you, and I'm sure he would thank you for the compliment if he could speak."

“Earthbound…” Be Mine spoke the snakes name slowly and softly. “I like him very much.” As if realizing that it was rude to say such a thing and not address the one she was speaking off the foal turned her face lightly towards Earthbound and mimicked the adult’s words. “I have taken a liking to you also Earthbound.” It was sad that he could not talk back to her, but his nuzzling was more than enough.
Her gaze shifted expectantly towards Grasswhistle. “Do you have a name?”

The smile quickly turned to a frown as Be Mine addressed him, asking his name. Had he not given it? He had introduced Earthbound, and-
A look of shock and embarrassment clouded his face, and if one could smack one's face with his hoof, he would of done so. How in the world did he forget to introduce himself?! Where were his manners?! He felt as if he began to make himself more of a fool more and more with each kimeti he met.
"Oh, ah, I'm sorry," he stuttered. "How completely thoughtless of me. My name is Grasswhistle."
He smiled, trying to forget the embarrassing moment, but it would forever be ingrained in his mind. He, a grown buck, lacked the common sense to introduce himself to a young foal. What a fool!"
Trying to change the topic, he cleared his throat and looked at the young foal.
"So, what were you doing here all by yourself?"

“Grasswhistle…” Just as she had repeated Earthbound’s name, she did so with the bucks, testing the word on her tongue. “I like that name.” Be Mine watched the adult curiously; not entirely sure as to why he looked so mortified. She wrinkled her nose at him playfully and wriggled her tail to draw his mind from whatever plagued him. But she was the one quickly distracted by his words, her body turning so she could look at the pond.
“Oh… but I wasn’t by myself… I was… with someone, but she wouldn’t talk to me.” She looked back at Grasswhistle a little sadly. “… She’s in the water..”

He smiled at her playfulness. How long had it been since he was a foal? He... couldn't really remember. But as she suddenly turned around, he cocked his head curiously, wondering if something he said upset her. But as he heard her reply, he laughed softly, and walked over to where she was, glancing into the water also.
"I see you've met your reflection," he chuckled.
He motioned towards his own reflection
"It's just an image of yourself, so it won't be able to talk back to you."

“My reflection…” It was a good thing he explained a moment later because Be Mine was very confused. She stood up and trotted closer to the water, her eyes wide as she looked first at Grasswhistle and his twin and then at her ‘friend, except now her friend had a snake wrapped around it’s neck.
“Oh…” So this was what Be Mine looked like. She smiled at herself. It really was a shame though that this wasn’t another friend to talk to.

She whispered goodbye to herself, her reflection, then leant back so she no longer looking into the water. After smiling up at Grasswhistle for a moment, Be Mine picked herself up and looked around. “Earthbound, I think I’m getting hungry.” She said to the snake companionably.

The snake only looked at her curiously, tongue flickering in and out of its mouth frequently.
Grasswhistle walked over and nudged the foal softly on the head.
"He might not understand what you're saying, but I'm sure he's hungry too." He flustered slightly as he heard his stomach growl softly. "And... I guess I'm hungry too," he laughed.
Glancing at the water's edge, he peered in, seeing if he could catch sight of any fish. Then he looked to the bushes where he came from.
"What do you feel like eating today, Be Mine?"

“Oh, he can’t?” That was a little disappointing. It sure looked like he understood.
Be Mine butted her head gently against Grasswhistle’s leg and giggled at the soft growl from the adults stomach. “Um… I would like…” She wrinkled her nose as she thought, little tail wagging.
“Fruit!” That was the right word, wasn’t it? Normally she just ate grass and seeds and whatever was close to the ground. She rarely got to try the soft, ripe fruits that hung from the trees until they fell and became all squishy.
