For Marlon, the life of a lone wasn't really a choice, it was necessity. So he told himself, anyway.

He padded through another small stream, feeling leaves clinging to the pads of his feet as he stepped through and then past the water. He hadn't always been a lone wolf. Once he'd had a pack, a strong one that he had loved and lived in all his life. Now, though, he'd been wandering for months, ever since... Oh, his poor Helena...

His head drooped again as he gently, tenderly, pushed those thoughts aside. He was alive and trying to live with the pain as best he could, but until he handled it he couldn't look at another pack. Packs meant mates and mates were a reminder of what he'd lost. Something he couldn't take. It wasn't the lingering prejudices that did it, though those would likely cause him trouble in the future as well, it was just the reminders of what he'd had for so short a time. The lone life was the only one for him now, although he always embraced meeting other wolves provided they were compassionate-- or at least friendly.

Senka trotted through the forest, thinking of home. It wasn't that she was ready to go back yet, but there was something to be said for the comfort of a daily routine, the knowledge that the pack was there. Of course, the pack was one member smaller, now. Bryanni. Surly, old Bryanni had been consigned to ashes. Senka's mentor was no more.

The she-wolf heaved a sigh. It wasn't like the old storyteller had ever been particularly kind to her, but she still missed the old wolf. She had learned so much from her and she suspected that Bryanni had acquired a certain affection for Senka before the end, as well.

The scent of water reached her nose, interrupting her thoughts and reminding her that she was rather thirsty. A moment later, she caught the scent of another wolf. Her ears perked up. Just what she had been looking for. Hopefully, this wolf would provide a bit of a distraction from her maudlin thoughts. With that, she picked up her pace and headed toward water and wolf.

Marlon was unaware that there were any wolves near. Sure, he kept his eyes open and his nose and ears sharp, but it was rare to run into other wolves in the wide expanse of Telk if you weren't in packlands, even with the incredible amount of lone wolves and travelers the land supported. So far from his old packlands, Marlon had to be careful not to cross into packlands less the pack be unfriendly toward strangers.

Still, there was only so much your senses could tell you, and Marlon had never been much of a fighter. If he had been, maybe... Well, things turned out as they turned out.

He paused to sniff at a tree with gouged bark. Deer, but days old. With a sigh of discontent, he moved on with his slow amble. There was nowhere to go, so why rush? The wind blew against his side and just in case he checked for wolf scent. Of course, if they were coming up from behind him from the other side-- or from in front or behind-- his nose would be useless.

There could be others around you're just not noticing because of poor wind direction. But they may be well able to smell YOU.

He jumped at the thought and stopped, turning to look around and then behind him at the stream he had just crossed.

Senka found the little stream first and paused to take a drink. It was cool and delicious, perfect on this hot, summer day. When she had her fill, she looked for a sign of the wolf she had scented. He did not appear to be in her immediate vicinity, so she followed the little creek farther downstream.

It wasn’t long before she caught sight of the wolf just on the other side of the water. His white and purple fur stood out quite starkly against the verdant greens and browns of the forest. There was something in his gait that spoke of sadness, something in his drooping head that said defeat. That much was immediately clear. This was a wolf who knew of suffering.

So much for getting away from the maudlin, she thought wryly.

Suddenly, the other wolf jumped and looked straight at her, their startled eyes meeting over the stream. Senka did not dare to so much as blink, for fear he might bolt. Though perhaps she was being unfair.

“Hello,” she said softly, soothingly. “I am Senka. Who are you?”

That the female had gotten so close without him even hearing her was startling. He wasn't expecting to see anyone only a few wolflengths from him. That she had red eyes starkly staring at him from a background of black fur was more startling.

For some reason, red eyes always made him uncomfortable. There had been a few wolves with red eyes in his old pack, and even knowing them he had still been uncomfortable when they startled him. Complete strangers did not make it easier to deal with, especially when they were strangers he was meeting alone.

"Have I crossed onto your lands?" He asked immediately, suspicious and a bit concerned. She was very direct about wanting to know him. No small talk at all. He knew he wasn't in anyone's pack lands. He would have smelled the borders no matter which way the wind was blowing. Was she one of those lones who sought other, weaker lones to prey on?

He stood a little straighter, just in case. He didn't want her to think he was an easy target. His name couldn't hurt, though. "I'm Marlon."

Assured that he wasn’t going to run off right away, Senka relaxed slightly. He was a handsome wolf, she noted objectively, with his pale green eyes and exotic coloring, but he seemed to be most suspicious of her intentions. Did she really seem so aggressive? Senka did not think that she was exuding any malice, but perhaps there was something about her that appeared threatening. Or perhaps he was suspicious by nature. Since she did not know what, if anything, she had done to alarm him, she decided to carry on as though this was a perfectly normal conversation.

“Well, then,” she said. “Greetings, Marlon. No, these are not my lands. My pack lives far from here. I am simply on a journey, collecting stories.” She cocked her head slightly. “What about you?”

She hoped he would relax, soon. Despite being a warrior by necessity, Senka preferred to avoid fights most of the time, so she really had no intention of attacking him. Besides, she would much rather have an interesting conversation than an uneasy standoff.

Stories? That seemed interesting. How far had she gone to find them? How far had she come, actually, would be the question he should be asking. She wasn't coming home; she was still traveling away from it. Wherever that was.

At least she had a home.

"I'm a lone. I always wander between packlands. There isn't really a purpose other than moving to a place to find a new den for the day or better hunting somewhere where I won't infringe on someone else's territory.

"I've never heard of a traveling storyteller before," he admitted suddenly, "Let alone met one. Have you had any luck? With finding stories, I mean."

She didn't seem like the type who talked a lot, but if she was a storyteller that meant she had to have some kind of drive to tell her own story, right? Marlon just didn't feel comfortable with others, but Senka seemed all right so far. Being aware didn't mean he had to be rude. He settled down a little bit so that he wouldn't appear quite so tense to her. He was young enough to take care of himself still. Even if she attacked him he was pretty sure he could escape or hold out long enough to make himself an escape route.

Pleased that he seemed to be relaxing, Senka sat back on her haunches, then noticed with some amusement that the little stream still separated them. Boundaries. She grinned at his question.

“Indeed, I have been quite successful so far,” she replied. “Though some wolves are more willing than others to part with their tales.” She considered his words, but had to admit that she had never crossed paths with another like her. “You might be right, though. Beyond my pack, I am not sure how common wandering storytellers are.” It was something that she had never considered before. Oh, well. Something to ponder another time. Right now, however…

“You say you are a lone? Were you born as such?” She had met wolves who were the children of lones, or were abandoned so young that they might as well have never had a pack. Had that been his fate, as well, or did he have a different story to tell? Had he ever run with a pack? She was curious.

Marlon's eyes avoided hers. He briefly contemplated she may have been lying about herself and was trying to make him confess to where he was from, but suddenly... he didn't care. Did it really matter anymore? So long after? It wouldn't change anything if he told her or even if she killed him.

He just didn't want to relive it.

"No, I had a pack," he replied, his gaze staying away from hers. "Jewels of the Meadow. We used to have land... well, a ways from here. You won't find them now, though. As a stranger you won't find any stories there. Only questions."

And bones. He shook his head slightly to dislodge the thought, but his shoulders sank slightly anyway. It was too close to the surface now to deny it. He didn't question himself again-- not yet-- but he remembered Helena. He remembered that last night. Had the pups made it out? Images of the bright flashes of pups' pelts flashed through his mind.

Nothing so small-- or so bright-- could have escaped without a miracle.

Senka watched as he seemed to shrink in upon himself. Oh, yes. This wolf had a story, and it was not a happy one. A brief flicker of sympathy swept through her. Perhaps it was not fair of her to drag up painful memories with her questions, but the pull of her curiosity was too strong to resist. Besides, she had heard that talking about things helped. She had never had cause to try it for herself, but it seemed to make other wolves feel better when they spoke to her, sometimes.

Still, what a strange way to phrase his words. As a stranger, she would find only questions? Was his old pack gone? Where? Why was he not with them? Ah, she had so many questions. Deciding that there was no point in just thinking about them, she spoke up.

“Jewels of the Meadow is a beautiful name,” she said gently, both because it was true and to soften the blow, if possible. “Would you tell me what happened?” There. That was something resembling tactful, especially since Senka had always been straightforward with her curiosity. At least it wasn’t completely blunt, by her standards.

Marlon glanced at her swiftly, then dropped his eyes away again. He knew that was coming, but now he felt like he didn't have the energy to come up with a convenient way to stave off the conversation for a bit longer. Why bother? If she was a storyteller, she would want to know for her collecting. Maybe, if he told her, he could prevent the same fate from befalling other packs. No. That was stupid. Maybe he could warn them, so they could take precautions.

He smiled slightly at her, but the smile was bitter. Self-deprecating. "Do you want the long story or the short one?"

It was a rhetorical question. He sighed and his head drooped. "Jewels was--" He never forgot the 'was', "-- A pack of all unnaturally colored wolves. Red, green, blue, you name it. Each color represented a task you could perform. Blue wolves, by nature, were better at fishing and swimming. Red were our warriors. Purple was for caring for the young. White was our star color. The mix of all other colors. They were able to perform any of the tasks for the pack. We had no naturals if our Alpha could help it. They weren't... welcome." Marlon glanced at her paws then continued. He didn't want to alienate her. He knew other packs didn't share the same mindset. "Our pack lands were beautiful. Plenty of space, dens for large families and single wolves alike, good hunting."

He thought of his den with Helena, a den by the lake. They'd been lucky to have found it just as the previous occupant was moving with his pregnant mate into a larger den. Before... Before, he and Helena had just been talking about family. About finding another den soon. Now he had no family at all.

“No need to worry about offending me,” Senka assured him. “I have come across other packs where natural coloring is not desired.” Her thoughts went briefly to Kamiya and Kai, the outrageously bright-coated pair of wolves she had once met. She hoped Kai was being true to his word and breaking away from his pack’s traditions for good, but that was neither here nor there.

“Your lands sound like they were lovely,” she added, though she wondered if, perhaps, she should remain silent. This could not be easy to talk about and perhaps her interruptions were not appreciated.

Still, the compliment was genuine. In some ways, his pack sounded similar to hers. Specific duties were given to certain wolves, though the method of determining who did what was a bit different. His lands, too, reminded Senka of her own. There was ample den space, though her pack was a little more communal than his sounded, and her lands were very rich. While his pack seemed to focus strongly on color, hers had their own traditions, as well, most of which were based around the life-giving gift from the gods: fire.

Belatedly, Senka realized that Marlon must have cared for the young, with his pretty purple markings. For herself, she had never had many dealings with pups. Of course, she was barely out of adolescence, herself, and she had been too busy training under Bryanni to have had much time for anything else. Ah. And there she was again, right back to where she had started from. Bryanni. She had no idea where these morose thoughts kept springing from, but she saw no reason to focus on her own when there was someone else’s pain to consider.

With a firm shake of her ruff, Senka banished those thoughts once again and focused on Marlon.

Senka's response brought Marlon back to the point and away from his inner musings.

"Well. As far as I know, nothing led up to it. It was a day like any other. I spent the afternoon watching the two most recent litters, while their parents either performed their duties or slept after their jobs were over. I turned them over to their parents just before sunset. Helena had joined me a little while before, and we returned to our den together. We talked about the hunt the next day, though neither of us were hunters. I think we were drifting off to sleep when we heard the first of the howls. I remember feeling disoriented."

He still remembered how hard it was to tell who was enemy or friend until they were howling near you. That was farther into the story, though. If he jumped around Senka would become confused, and if he was going to relive this he was at least going to do it so she understood.

"A pack of wolves had attacked us without warning. I didn't know who they were. I don't know if anyone did. They just came into our packlands and slaughtered our night scouts on the borders before making their way into the den area. Helena and I..." He paused and looked down, feeling the grief wash over him despite that it had been several seasons now. "Helena was my mate. We had a den by the lake, a bit out of the way from the main dens. We heard the fighting from there. We didn't know whether to go or wait for someone to come to us, to explain what was going on, but I thought of the pups and after we heard our Alpha call, we couldn't stay where we were. We went."

Why? If they had run the other way... but the pack. The pack needed them. He would have been betraying the pack. If he had, though... if he had at least he and Helena would have survived.

"She never would have been able to face herself again if we didn't," he thought aloud, his mind clearly elsewhere.

So, he was one of the wolves who tended the pups, Senka realized, her assumption confirmed. But Helena. Who was Helena? Ah, his mate. They were struck by an attack in the middle of the night. But who would do such a thing? To what end? Did Marlon know? Well, Senka was certain that he would be getting to that, if she was patient. For now, she need only listen. She could always ask questions when he was done.

“Your mate sounds like she was very loyal,” she observed. Then, because she felt like all she was doing was giving worn-out platitudes, she said, “I know of someone like that. His name was Torin. He was not a great warrior, but he was so fiercely loyal that he gave his life so that his pack might slay their enemy.” Her ruby eyes grew distant, lost in history. In a dreamy tone, she added, “He saved them all.” Senka blinked and looked at Marlon.

“What happened next?”

Marlon studied Senka's dreamy expression as she related a very abridged version of a similar tale, and felt his stomach clench unpleasantly. It wasn't the same. She'd find that out soon enough.

"Next we ran headlong into a slaughter. You couldn't tell friend from enemy until they yelped or howled. There was no moon for any kind of light. The only difference was that the enemies were quicker to strike than we were. If they saw a shape they attacked, even if they didn't have the time to smell if it was one of their own or one of ours. Either they didn't care or they were much better at fighting at night than most of us were."

He shook his head and slowly sank onto his haunches, looking heartbroken. "Helena and I stayed close to one another. We fought them. Helena was better at it than I was, but it didn't matter. We weren't well-trained, we weren't expecting to have to use hunting skills for killing our own kind. We were a peaceful pack."

He could still see it, the memory only slightly affected by the fuzziness of time. The shapes throwing themselves about in the dark. The sounds of his packmates being slaughtered, of the other pack enjoying slaughtering them. The skull mask. Fighting for his life against one of them while Helena was separated from him.

"They got between us. We each had our own battles to fight. She was so close... but I couldn't do anything but fight for my own life. I heard her death howl." He was staring in the water, and decided that even for his level of post-slaughter morbidity it was hitting too close to home. Abruptly, he met her eyes and summed up. "They killed her. A few wolflengths from me."

"Our sacrifice saved no one," he added very softly. "All it did was give them the chance to kill Helena. After she fell, I managed to score a bite on my opponent's nose that distracted him and fled. I saw that there were only a handful of us left. A few were trying to take my way out, a few were clearly in it... for as long as they could withstand the numbers."

He met her eyes. "I haven't seen a single member of my pack since. As far as I know all of them were slaughtered. Pups to elders. There is no more Jewels pack. We are dead."
