It had been a rather crummy week for the relationship between Suri and Tony, what with the both of them having to miss a date and then being resigned to stiff cuddling where neither one of them were comfortable, her with her bruises and him with his broken arm. So, in an attempt to be a good girlfriend as well as a little spontaneous (gasp!) she drove to the library right after school, taking no after school appointments and cancelling her office hours. She had made her shortbread cookies, this time with chocolate drops on top, and she had planned to give them to her poor, broken, dashing date.
Except it had been his day off, apparently.
Suri sighed, standing in front of the empty table. She should have known it was Thursdays he worked in the afternoons, not Wednesdays. He had a shift tomorrow morning, of course, but would the cookies be safe overnight, when there were high school delinquents and other librarians about? Oh, and that Camelot guy. She would be pissed if she found out Camelot had eaten Tony's cookies.
Ambivalent for the moment, she leaned against his table and opened the tin, grabbing one of the cookies for herself as she pondered what to do. After all, it wasn't like Tony would have minded, it was a pretty huge tin.

Was it really wise to leave Ever working more-or-less alone, these days? Last long conversation he'd had with Tony had been largely about how irresponsible he was, about laying down the rules, but -- he'd been good since then. More or less. He'd slacked off, yes, but he hadn't pissed anyone off or poked around in anyone's computer files or shoved highly inappropriate books in the children's section.
He'd just thought about it.
This afternoon, unfortunately, had been spent behind the desk. On the plus side, it meant that he was able to sit back and read without it technically being trouble. Having a book out behind the desk didn't hinder his duties, after all, the way it did when he was shelving books. On the downside, though, he was constantly interrupted.
Today, his book on cryptology had been left open as he was drawn away to help someone find Ulysses for schoolwork, and when he came back there was a woman hanging around. Ever raised an eyebrow and approached warily, trying to put his finger on why she was familiar.

Suri saw Tony so often at the library desk that it hardly occurred to her that other people used his desk when he was off-shift. Therefore, when some lanky youth started heading in her direction, giving her a look, she returned the favor with her own narrow-eyed stare, until as he approached she seemed to remember him from somewhere, and her expression faded into one of vague confusion.
There had been lights...and that horrid laser tag game, which was entirely too loud and strobe-y. The mental lightbulb seemed to visibly brighten her expression, and she snapped as she made the connection, relaxing her posture slightly, if not completely. "You were at the arcade with Zac, weren't you?" the woman asked politely, scooping up the cookie tin and holding it to her chest. "I think we were on the same team." She had spent the majority of the game thinking that you had to shoot the color assignment they gave you, and as such her score hadn't been entirely exemplary. But it had been months ago, and he was still getting to know everyone, maybe her fellow lieutenant had forgotten.

She greeted him and his expression opened up, briefly. Flash of realisation [yes, he remembered her] faded out to something considering [why was she here?] and then finally closed down into his polite work face, a smile twitching automatically across his mouth as he nabbed his book and tucked a sheet of paper in to mark his spot. Soon, there would be a Sovereign Heights student creeping over to actually check out that book, horrified that he had to read it. For now, though, it was just the two of them.
"Uh, yeah. And now you're here, I guess." He raised an eyebrow, shooting her another look. If he was still worried about her presence, he was covering it up better, now.
"You need help with something?" A dual edged question. He was, after all, holding down the fort today. This was his library. But it also was a nudge, to see if she was there for some other reason...

"Not particularly," Suri responded listlessly, glancing off to one of the shelves. Realizing that she was still wearing her Crystal Faculty ID, she slid the lanyard off of her neck and into a pocket of her handbag, not wanting to seem too stereotypically school-teacher. At least she'd had the sense to take her lab coat off before she entered. "I thought Tony was working today, but I suppose I got schedules mixed up, so here I am with cookies for the man and it ends up being his day off."
She sighed again, a wistful sigh that hinted at both resignation and some small level of adoration, based on the way the edges of her lips curled the slightest bit upwards every time she thought about him. After a moment's thought, she reopened the tray and grabbed a second cookie, determined to not let her baking go to nothing.
"You can have one if you want, they're still fresh. Shortbread, I made them myself." She thought about calling Tony to see what he was up to, but that would ruin the possibility of trying this particular surprise a different day, so she ultimately decided to count this as one of her losses and just enjoy her mother's recipe while the cookies were still warm.

Ever looked her over as he dipped fingers in for a cookie -- suspicious, maybe, but he also wasn't turning down the offer. Free food was free food and he would have taken it even if it weren't delicious home made shortbread cookies. He broke off a piece [spilling crumbs on the floor, alas, oh well] and watched her, considering his response.
"...why are you looking for Tony?" Still mostly polite, even if he hadn't exactly liked that look on her face. Ever tried to make it business like: whatever she needed from the librarian, perhaps he could help her find it. Eventually.

The cookies were buttery, warm, and definitely meant to be comfort food, though small enough to be eaten in a single bite. Suri nevertheless took cautious nibbles as her thoughts wandered off, and it took a moment for her to refocus on the question given to her. She paused, unsure herself exactly what to call Tony. Was he her boyfriend? She supposed by all social standards that would be the case, but the title seemed so...childish.
"Because I know he would appreciate the company, and I thought I would surprise him," she explained, closing the tin. If she picked up on his curiosity, it didn't seem to register on her face, and every so often she glanced towards the main entrance, as if somehow Tony would walk in any moment, laughing about how he had left Dogby's favorite toy in his desk. Of course, she didn't actually expect him to drop by unexpectedly. Her logic knew better than that. But something new and vivacious kept her stealing looks in that general direction, just in case.
"Do you work here often?" Suri asked, refocusing her attention on Ever to keep from seeming as fidgety as she felt. Perhaps he would know more about Camelot or that other senshi that had shooed her out of the library once before.

"Uh. When I can lever myself up and in..." He offered a smile, his own eyes unwavering as he considered the woman. Ever wasn't half as fidgety, polishing off his own cookie and swiping hands on the sides of his pants. He eyed her seriously, a bit too focused maybe, and his posture shifted from business like to -- well. It was something like a rival, considering, calculating.
He settled more comfortably in place, leaning on the counter instead of standing up primly, He offered a very brief twitch of a smile. "And, you know, when Tony can't. A few months now..."

There was something...mocking to the level of familiarity Ever seemed to have with her, though she couldn't place why. Nevertheless, his casual air put her even more on edge, and as he slouched she straightened her posture, formal and demure. Even so, he was still too tall for them to quite be eye-to-eye.
Idly, she wondered if this is how General Zinkenite felt around most normal people.
"That explains why I haven't seen you around, then," Suri said with a nod. "I'm usually pretty good at meeting Tony when he's on shift. Today has just been...off."
She gave one final look to the door, then accepted her glances for the fruitless gestures they were, taking a step closer to Ever in confidence. "How are the...um...'crowds'...around here when you're on shift?" Suri was trying to be subtle about her request for Negaverse information, perhaps even suave, but her delivery of the hushed statement had been anything but smooth.

It didn't click at all; Ever didn't pick up on the implied question, didn't catch on to what she was asking. As it was, his expression just went blank, confused, and then faintly bemused, perhaps a bit like he thought she was a half wit. Still leaning in against the counter, his fingers shifted against his arms, shoulders hiking up in a shrug.
"It's a ******** library." The words came out slow, careful, his eyebrows raised in deliberate punctuation. "People come. They take out books. Sometimes they do some work. It's not really a 'crowd' place."
With that, he straightened, eyes sweeping around the room. Maybe, sometimes, there were more students than other. "I'm sure they have somewhere more fun to hang out. Someone's basement, or the middle of the park with a keg of beer, or something..."

The sarcasm dripping in Ever's voice was apparent, and Suri had to bite her tongue so as not to speak out of turn in the presence of a superior officer. Nevertheless, in civilian form the slight stung against her prim and proper ego, and had she lacked any control she probably would have snapped back a bitter, angry response.
With pursed lips, she rubbed her temples in agitation, thinking for words more polite than the ones that instantly jumped to mind. She would not talk back, she would not talk back. She owed Zinkenite that much, at least. "No, that's not--ugh." She sighed in exasperation, then did a quick sweep with her eyes to make sure no one was within earshot.
"I ran into someone a while back, an older man with a shield. He called himself Camelot, seemed to think the library was his. Ring a bell?" Perhaps being more straightforward would jog the youth's memory.

She could have bit back: in civilian form, Ever wasn't a stickler for the rules. Out of uniform, he was hardly her superior officer. Instead he was a mouthy pain-in-the-a** who worked at the library and tended to give people a hard time. Definitely someone she was within her rights to bite back against. But she didn't, and in all honesty, she looked better for it. If he were more proud, more self-conscious, if his ego was a little more built up and a little more fragile, Ever probably would feel embarrassed. Instead he just looked faintly amused by the emotions playing across her face. "No. Not a lick. Not an echo." He shrugged at her, head tilted to the side, and considered her expression. "I can keep an eye out, though, I guess." fallenkitsunethief Please quote me if you reply!
