This is a private roleplay between Bataar [Kayakurai] and Yue Lao [Face Your Demons].

Setting:
The Docks.

They've never met, and it turns out they have one thing in common: Neither of them can swim. Yue Lao and Bataar may not have the best first meeting, as Yue seems to be rather on edge because of her location, and Bataar may not fare better. Will this end with one or both of them sitting at the bottom of the water? Maybe they'll turn out to be completely pleasant together! Ha ha ha.

The heat was so sweltering that even Hime-san was being good. He sat on Yue's shoulder, and tried to fan himself as she smoothed her plastered bangs away from her face. She had even ditched her overcoat at her mothers' place in order to walk around with just her white fighting pants and her black wrappings. She felt comfortable, but so very warm.

She was on the docks doing business for her othermother. She was interested in a culinary deal with one of the fishermen, but she had sent her daughter alone because she said that he always tried to flirt with her. Eventually he would begin to figure out that she was in a relationship, and Yowai didn't want him prying into the nature of her relationship with Yue and Yue's mother Chishio.

So as such, Yue was dealing with a man who didn't know she was Yowai's daughter, as he tried to extract information from her about her othermother. Yue's answers were bored, short and disinterested. She was even too tactless to feign interest. "...flowers?"

"Huh?" Yue asked, having only caught the end of what he was asking.

"Does your boss like flowers, I asked," he said back, wrapping some fish up in paper to hand to Yue in a basket.

"I'm not sure. So, how much do these cost?" She asked, pointing to the purchase.

"If she did like flowers, what would she like best?" He insisted.

Yue scowled under the sun, pressed her palm against her hot forehead and shifted her weight. She would evaporate any second. "The kind of flowers that don't talk," Yue retorted, letting her temper get the best of her. She hated dealing with stupid Lunarians, especially ones that took so much to explain things to.

"Maybe you should go for a swim," he finally proposed, "You look uncomfortably warm."

Yue just scowled, dragged the fish price out of him, paid it, and was heading back down the dock when she saw a large patch of shade. Wait, was it being cast by a Lunarian...? Whoever it was seemed huge. Yue stared.

Perhaps fur was not the best addition to one's wardrobe in the summer, but the captain endured the heat as best he could. Needless to say, he was definitely glistening beneath his heavily ornamented and armored clothing-- it was days like this that he wished he were back up north dealing with wind and snow. The whole idea of seasons just didn't seem to click for Bat.

He'd come for no apparent reason, other than to try and catch a breeze off of the water(without entering it, of course) and he was now regretting his presence. The fish market was extremely busy and people were everywhere-- quite simply, Bataar Jaoret was in the way. The Mongol grimaced and began trudging away, pausing to wipe the sweat from his forehead when, suddenly, he saw it.

"It" was the most beautiful rat he'd ever seen, which appeared to be attached to a girl that had stopped very near to him. "Miss, is that rat for sale?" he demanded, parting the crowd to approach the legionnaire. It would be a perfect addition to his collection, he suspected, and he fully intended to purchase the creature.

"I've never seen one like it!" the behemoth man exclaimed, making the mistake of picking the monkey up.

Yes. The shadow was being cast by a very muscular Lunarian. He looked very out of place, too: a behemoth in a sea of bustling fishmerchants and those who came to purchase their wares. Yue had never seen him before. She tilted her head, curious. Did she know him...? Not by physical appearance, there was no way. Yue Lao would remember someone like that. For a while, she observed him from afar. He also seemed to be covered in his own sweat. Yue couldn't fault him for that; he was wearing some kind of fur. Even she was uncomfortably warm, and all she had was cool, thin pants and her black wrappings. Hime-san was making her shoulder extremely hot just sitting there, so she could hardly imagine what the big Lunarian was going through.

Then he spoke to her, and she was too shocked to answer right away. It sounded like he was speaking gibberish. "That... rat?" Yue held up the basket of fish, half expecting to see some kind of horrible rodent. Instead, he exclaimed something, reached over, and picked chubby Mr.Princess up.

Yue Lao had never before heard any creature, much less Hime-san, make such a sound. It howled, chittered and screeched all at once, and then went still. That was the eerie part. It turned its little fluffy head and wrapped its tiny fingers around the stranger's hand, and just stared at him. Stared with its beady little eyes. Yue grimaced, and stretched out a hand.

"I think my exotic rat is about to bite you," she said. "And it has been all over the place, so it could pretty much have any disease imaginable." Yue Lao stared at Hime-san, as if the monkey was about to explode. It had broken its tense staring contest to glare at its owner, however: Yue Lao had also called it a rat. If it could be indignant, surely it was then.

More importantly to Yue (as Hime-san's temper tantrums were nothing new), what kind of Lunarian would be crazy enough to just walk over and scoop someone's Golden Lion Tamarin up? ...Crazy, or just really slow? Yue pursed her lips, fanned her face with her free hand, and watched as Mr.Princess pretended to die. He liked to do that when he was particularly upset.

Needless to say, Bataar believed that Mr. Princess was the most magnificent thing he'd ever seen. Even the noises it made were top-rate, in the Mongolian man's opinion. Beyond that, the orange creature would make a near-perfect projectile if he needed to get rid of an enemy quickly-- he wondered if it was trained to kill. "And it's holding my hand." Bat was melting, and not because it was so damned hot outside.

The sword strapped to his back and the knife at his hip were clear indicators that he was a man accustomed to fighting, if not killing. His muscles meant business, and yet the Noble clearly had a deep admiration for furry, rodent-like creatures. He had quite a few coins in a small bag, which he now snatched with his free hand in order to shove into Yue's basket of fish. Needless to say, it was a considerable amount, mainly because Bat had no concept of money and was especially dim when it came to counting.

Clearly, he was hoping that this offer would seal the deal and that he'd live the rest of his life contentedly with his new orange pet rat. "He bites?" the man demanded, clearly elated by the idea. This was a little weapon, wasn't it? "I've also been all over the place," he added, throwing a glance in the fighter's direction. "So I guess he and I are about even!" He patted the monkey's head, his green eyes filled to the brim with a glowing sort of adoration.

Bataar liked to consider his supposed insanity to instead be absolute confidence, which made him feel both superior and manly. Strange creatures were no match for the Mongol! He'd killed bigger, and size did matter! "But if he makes me angry, I can always just make him into a rug. You'd be a pretty rug, wouldn't you?" he addressed the monkey, petting it as if it were already his prized possession.

This Lunarian was unbelievable. He seemed even more disconnected from reality than Yue Lao was. She found herself staring at him in disbelief, her usual quick responses drained away by heat and the sensation she was in a really strange fever dream. Had she passed out from dehydration and was now experiencing a rather questionable hallucination? When he spoke, the words didn't even seem to make sense. He was gushing over Hime-san holding his hand...?

The little monkey was clearing squeezing as tight as his tiny hands were able, as if he could pop the stranger's fingers right off his hand. Then he dumped some coins into the basket, and she had to take a deep breath to stop herself from freaking out. Instead, it turned into a creepy cascade of laughter as the situation just became too ridiculous. "My monkey wants... to kill you... and you just threw coins at my boss's food," she squeezed out in between bursts of uncontrollable laughter.

"I had to fight someone for that rat," she said. Hime-san glared at her. She had decided that rat was the perfect descriptor for her golden lion tamarin, a word she had failed to think of before but would now use perpetually. At least the big stranger had given her that. "So you're going to have to take these back," she added, once she'd caught her breath, extracting the coins and with nimble fingers returning them to his bag. He really seemed to be missing the point. Her poor temper would likely return rapidly, but watching Hime-san feel as frustrated as she often was with her rat, she was enjoying herself. Even if it was hot, and this Lunarian was pawing at her prized Golden Lion Tamarin.

As soon as he mentioned turning Hime-san into a rug, Yue Lao's expression became serious. Well, more serious. She still retained some of the drunken glow of her youth, and one eyebrow arched. She crossed her arms over her chest, the basket bumping against her side. "Look, fur-covered behemoth, whoever you are-- That's not a good idea. He'd make a lousy rug. And if anyone would turn him into a rug, it would be me." Yue's feet shifted unconsciously so that she was in a sturdy, defensive stance. It was a rather aggressive gesture, considering how tiny and wiry Yue looked next to the hulking Lunarian.

Bataar was, honestly, fairly resistant to the monkey's squeezing hands. Instead of yelling or throwing it at the ground, he squeezed back, grinning at what he supposed to be his new pet rat. On the whole, he found the small animal to be wonderfully charming! He had to admit, he didn't quite see why his new rat's former owner was laughing so much, but he'd let it slide.

"This little fellow could never kill me!" Bat responded, forcing a bark of incredulous laughter. It was true that the monkey really did look about the size of a rat when the Mongolian man was holding it. His size was, quite simply, astounding when compared to the small animal's. He did his best to coddle the creature, wondering idly when it was finally going to yield and attach to him in order to demonstrate all the love its little heart could take.

It was when Yue Lao suggested that he give the monkey back that he shot her a small look of disbelief. It made no sense considering how quickly he'd connected with the furry thing in his arms. "But this rat-- don't you think I was born to have it?" Bataar struck a little pose with the monkey as if to illustrate his blossoming love and adoration for it and did his best to make sure that his eyes looked rather pleading(although he wasn't very good at that-- he probably looked more like he'd just experienced a particularly effective punch in the face). He had to make this girl see!

Beyond that, how could she possibly know anything about the sacred art of rug-making? That was a man's work! "So you wouldn't want to feel this golden fur beneath your toes?" the Mongol asked, frowning. As much as he might like his new rat's personality, he had to admit that he was about fifty-fifty when it came to skinning the critter in order to make his yurt a bit more homey. There was nothing wrong with that, was there?

Mr. Princess grimaced as the large Lunarian squeezed his small paw, and quickly gave up trying to retaliate. He took a new stance, which was trying to keep breathing despite the tight grip. He would have bitten the intimidating Lunarian, but he was also a little afraid that the stranger would just pop his head off in response. It didn't seem too far a stretch. Hime-san had never been so quiet before in his whole life. Mainly, he just wanted to return to Yue Lao, which was quite rare for a monkey of his contrary nature. His little eyes glittered with hatred Yue Lao had never seen before.

"Diseases could kill anyone," Yue Lao replied, "Just like poisons. Your size doesn't matter. You'd just hit the ground harder." Yue thought of Iseul's death again, and a bitterness crept into her voice. Her amusement at this Lunarian's seeming ignorance had faded, and was transforming into irritation again. Both monkey and master were losing their sense of humour, and Yue normally had to account for all their collective tolerance. Hime-san drove everyone insane, Yue most of all.

Was he in some kind of pain? He was making weird faces at Yue. In response, she pursed her lips and set the basket down on a nearby crate. Her hands were on her hips, and she looked like she was about to flay something alive. "No, because I was fated to win him. Get in line. He's not going to anyone until I die," she answered.

At the last suggestion, she closed her normally sleepy and drunken eyes, a ball of stress clearly forming behind her skull. Her fins quivered and she massaged her temple. "No. I would not. I think I'd like Hime-san back, now," Yue squeezed out, her voice electric with irritation. The water, when she opened her eyes, looked so nice and cool.. and this Lunarian was incredibly irritating. She'd take the monkey back, if she had to, but she certainly wasn't letting this brute keep him. Who could get along with such a creature?! He was worse than Hime-san!

It was becoming increasingly clear to Bataar that his new pet was not going to work out. For one, his lively little rat seemed to be nothing less than absolutely terrified of him and was staring at its real owner with eyes full of evident desperation. Needless to say, this fact made the mongol deeply unhappy and he frowned, suddenly uncertain. As much as he thought the primate was absolutely lovely, he couldn't shake the idea that it wanted to be as far away from him as possible.

But, maybe, if the Lunarian in front of him allowed him to keep his rat he could just immediately make it into a rug! That would be so bad. Sure, he'd miss out on some TLC, but that was hardly the point for a manly man like Bataar! So he looked again to Yue Lao, still willing to barter for the small creature in his hands. "I think if I were going to get a disease, I'd probably already have it." he scoffed, certain that this girl had no idea about his usual lack of hygiene. In fact, it was more likely that the monkey would actually get a disease from Bat himself.

The monkey had almost ceased to matter at this point but Bat did his best to continue holding onto the deal he was trying to make with Yue. "But... I have a way with rats!" Bat whined a bit hopelessly, loosening his grip on the monkey. It could leave, now, if it so desired. The behemoth man sighed, frowning at his loss and feeling a bit angry about the whole thing.

All he'd wanted, after all, had been a rare sort of rat and he'd been denied! It was, in his opinion, terrible business. "Harrumph!" he declared, for that seemed to be a manly sort of noise to make. "Just make sure you have your rat teach you a few manners when you get around to it." The day was hot and Bat had clearly just lost one of the most adorable creatures he'd ever seen-- he was, of course, irritated.

Yue Lao pressed the slightly cooler back of her hand against her forehead while she watched the stranger. He really just wasn't understanding her, nor the situation. Although she played games in which she pretended not to understand, it was painful to try to communicate with someone who legitimately seemed unwilling to accept the truth. She was convinced there was no way he was as dull as he presented himself to be. Although with so many muscles, maybe that was the only reason he'd made it through the war so far... and he did appear to have made it through a lot. Yue was relatively unharmed, in comparison. Even if she did get injured, Yowai and Chishio always made her a special poultice to prevent significant scars and to heal existing ones. They said she'd fare better in poor weather without them. Yue had no idea how her mothers managed to turn angry, scarred flesh into supple skin. But they did.

"Judging by the look my monkey is giving you, that's quite possible," Yue answered, watching Hime-san take the stranger's words to heart and sniff his hand. He seemed on the verge of fainting, and his little pink tongue popped out. Hime-san was also becoming quite sweaty in the large Lunarian's grip, and if he didn't open his hand soon, it was likely the golden lion tamarin would slip right out.

"Too bad Mr.Princess is only a rat by nature," she mumbled, as Hime-san got out of the Lunarian's relaxed grip and wobbled, slightly confused, back to Yue. It sat on her foot, but she picked him up and put him down on another crate. "You're sweaty and disgusting," she told him, wrinkling her nose.

Yue Lao didn't feel very much herself. She felt irritated and tired. The hot weather was enough to make her forget how much she hated swimming. "Too bad no number of rats could possibly teach you manners," Yue said, glaring at him. She untied the meteor hammer from where it was cutting off circulation, and looped it around her shoulder. "I wonder if a good fight might, though."

Yue didn't know this stranger. She didn't know how he fought, she didn't know who loved him, or how intelligent he actually was. She also did not really know how to give up or choose her battles.

Bataar watched the young woman, a sour look upon his face, puckering his lips just slightly as if he'd recently downed a pail of lemon juice. This girl was, if he wasn't mistaken, beginning to act plucky with him, and he didn't like it one bit! Was he not, after all, an impressive and powerful specimen? Didn't that sort of thing deserve respect? In Bat's opinion, that wasn't asking for much. He'd lost his rat by now and he was really just trying to figure out what to do. It was hot out-- hot enough to influence him with a deep-rooted sort of lethargy. He was hardly in the mood for an altercation, but how else could he teach this girl a lesson?

He took her words in silence, his lids growing heavy over his eyes. Bataar Jaoret was no stranger to insults, as his loud yawn pointed out. He knew he didn't have manners, but it wasn't as if he cared-- he was, after all, a magnificent man-beast of epic proportions. In truth, he was fixing to spare this girl. Maybe he'd go home and enjoy a nap beneath a shade-tree or something.

But the thought was clearly not meant to be carried out and Bat's fins perked up the minute he heard the word "fight." This had him cracking his knuckles in a matter of seconds, and he grinned devilishly, absolutely prepared to hammer his opponent, girl or not. "So you wanna fight?" he demanded, his green eyes glowing hot as coals.

And, without further ado, Bataar Jaoret threw the first punch.
