It had taken quite a bit of convincing but Synestra finally managed to get Oloneric to agree to come with her on a trip outside the herds lands. She was glad to allow her colt to see more of the world and perhaps he would feel more confident in doing so with her by his side. Her other son didn't need an escort as he was all too often running off by himself and getting into worlds of trouble. But Oloneric was quiet, shy and not at all the outgoing type, he needed to be nurtured more than Syrrin did and this was her opportunity to do so. Synestra knew of her sons love of insects and was currently leading him towards a large flower patch that would hopefully hold a large number of insects for him to look at.

"It's just up ahead." She told the colt at her side. The trip was taking longer than it normally would due to Oloneric's short legs but it allowed her the opportunity to simply spend time with him, even if he was being his typical quiet self. Surely he would turn into a chatterbox the moment he spotted his first insect.

Oloernic still wasn't entirely sure he liked the idea of venturing this far away from home, but he had his mother with him and the allure of seeing more insects had finally made his resolve to stay home crumble and so they had set off. His eyes were wide as they walked along the unfamiliar lands, well at least to him they were his mother had been out here many times before. He had remained silent during their journey, simply taking everything in as they went. So when his mothers voice suddenly broke the silence the green colt did a bit of side step in surprise before realizing what had happened.

"Oh, okay." He answered simply and turned his gaze back to the direction they were headed. Sure enough after a little bit more walking he could see the patch of wildflowers up ahead. They presented him with a sea of color amidst the green ocean of grass. Surely he would find plenty of insects here to watch and study.

Zangar swatted his tail in irritation as he stood off to the side of the flower patch, now and again he would lean down to take a bite of some flowers - some of them were quite good and by process of elimination he was figuring out which ones those were - but the bugs were irritating and he periodically stamped his hooves to dislodge the pesky insects.

It was during one such stomp that he noticed through the folds of his scarf the praying mantis sitting on a nearby flower, Zagar wasn't sure what the insect was and honestly he didn't care...but it looked weird and to his way of thinking that meant it probably bit. Better to take it out before it got the chance right? Raising his hoof he went to try and stamp the poor bug lifeless.

Spotting the look of wonder on her sons face as they reached the flower patch made all the work it took to get him to come her completely worth it. Already she could see several insects flying around, some landing on a flower before moving to another, some jumping around the grass and others simply buzzed around their heads. This would be a wealth of fun and knowledge for her son and Synestra gave him a small nudge. "Go have a look around." Surely out here, he would forget about any insecurities that he normally had a be himself, the self that she knew was buried deep inside.

Stepping into the flowers Synestra looked around. She spotted a large stallion now far off and he wore an interesting scarf wrapped around his head. The more she looked at him the more she noticed. He had a chain around his tail and the bumps, for lack of a better way to describe them, on his shoulders and back legs. She watched him raise his hoof and looked below it to see a praying mantis sitting on the flower below. Oh dear. Her eyes ticked to Olo who had also unfortunately noticed that and was racing towards the stallion. "Olo stop!" She cried out and raced after him, not wanting him to get hurt.

Look at all the insects! Oloneric was in heaven. He had never seen so many types of insects in one spot, oh he couldn't believe it! His tail wagged in delight as his mother nudged him and without hesitating the green colt trotted forward, a shower of bug sprang up as he moved. There was a moment of worry that he might step on one, but Oloneric remembered his grandfathers words that insects were fast and got out of the way. His eyes fell upon a large stallion to his left. He was absolutely huge...and to Oloneric's fear he was about to squish a praying mantis.

He didn't think, he just reacted. Racing forward Oloneric had one thought on his mind, save the bug. He didn't even think that doing so could cause himself harm, in the chance the stallion didn't see him or didn't care, but he just couldn't let an innocent bug get squished for no reason. "No!" He cried out as he reached the stallion. "Don't kill it!" It was only now that he realized that he was in danger of being stepped on himself, and the small green colt cringed but otherwise remained where he was, protecting the praying mantis from the stallion even as he heard his mother cry out to him.

Zangar was eying the bug with murderous intent when a green blur suddenly zoomed in between him and his victim, the brown stallion had to blink before he realized that it was a young colt whom had come to the bugs rescue and a shout from somewhere nearby sounded like a female and so he could only assume it was the colts mother.

Putting his foot down Zangar lowered his head to eye the colt for a few moments. "That bug is going to bite you" He warned the boy to break the silence "And then your mother will be upset" Probably at him for failing to kill the bug anyways Zangar thought to himself, glancing around for the mare he had heard earlier - he had to sweep across the meadow twice before he noticed the short little grey mare racing towards him. she looked thoroughly upset so Zangar took a few steps back to ease her nerves a bit. Like he'd stomp on a foal...honestly.

As Synestra ran towards the stallion and her son she was relieved to see that he had noticed Oloneric and hadn't accidentally stepped on him. Oloneric had the ability to bland into the grasses and being so small one could easily miss him if they weren't paying full attention. Sliding to a stop by her son as the large stallion took a couple of steps back she nudged Oloneric. "Don't run off like that ever again, you could have gotten hurt!" Then she turned her attention to the stallion. "You must forgive him he had a thing about insects." A thing that nearly had gotten him in trouble, hopefully though he would learn from this and be more cautious next time. His life was not worth losing over a silly little insect.

"No it won't! It will only bite if you try to hurt it." In truth Oloneric had been bit by one of these same bugs a while back when he hadn't been paying attention while rolling in the grass. He remembered how painful it had been, for such a tiny bug it packed quite a punch. As his mother made her way to him Oloneric sighed a bit. "I'm sorry mom, but he was gonna step on it." He did so many Soquili wish to kill bugs? Couldn't they see that they were just as important as themselves, perhaps more so considering they pollinated flowers, fed spiders and fed many small animals. Yes, they bit sometimes and yes they buzzed around ones head whenever trying to eat but hey that didn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to live.

Hanging his head in shame a bit Oloneric looked towards the praying mantis who was slowly crawling down the stem of the flower now, quite oblivious to the danger Oloneric had put himself in to save it. Well it was safe for now and that's all that really mattered. His eyes ticked up to the large stallion and he wondered just why he wore a scarf on his head like that. Didn't it make it hard to see?

Zangar quirked a brow at the colt who sassed back at him so quickly, though of course his scarf hid most of the movement from the other two Soquili. A thing for insects indeed. "It's fine," He told the small mare before looking back to the colt.

"Some bugs bite for no reason, how did you know that one wouldn't?" He questioned the boy - he seemed awfully young to know such things "Some bugs are poisonous even" He went on further before shaking his head slightly - if the mare wanted to let his colt play with nasty bugs then it really wasn't any of his business. Later on he'd tell his sister and she'd get a good laugh out it...well after she stopped being grossed out of course.

"I'm Zangar" He introduced himself after a few more moments of silence,it didn't look like the mare or the colt were going anywhere so he might a well be polite he supposed.

Synestra smiled in greeting to the stallion. "I am Synestra, and this is my son Oloneric." She nudged the green colt slightly. It would be good for him to speak to someone from outside the herd and he was the bug expert here so she would allow him to answer Zangar's questions. For now she would just simply watch and listen, allowing her son to do as he wished.

"Oh, well..." He began somewhat unsure of himself. But wait, he knew the answer to this question so why should he be shy. "Well, praying mantis only bite for two reasons, hunting and protection. You're too big for him to hunt so he would only bite you if he felt threatened by you." And certainly trying to step on it would be a threatening action. Oloneric paused for a moment to consider Zangar's next words. Yes it was true some insects were poisonous but that wasn't the case with the praying mantis. "But he isn't." He pointed out with a glance to the insect and then back to Zangar.

Clearly the stallion needed a bit of a lesson on insects and Oloneric was more than happy to provide that for him. "The more brightly colored ones are usually poisonous. But he's only green so he can blend in and not be seen by his prey. Plus most don't have enough poison in them to really hurt us if they did bite or sting us. It would only hurt a small spot not kill us like it would if we were other insects." He fell silent now, having spoke way too much than he was comfortable doing and perhaps the stallion would regret trying to question him about insects now.

"It's a pleasure to meet you and your son Ma'am," The stallion told her politely, his father might be a bit of a imp but both he and Zangars mother had been pretty firm about teaching the stallion and his sister some manners when they were younger. Zangar didn't always use them of course - but he remembered to do so from time to time.

As the colt started speaking about bugs Zangar blinked at him - how on earth had such a young colt managed to learn so much about insects? I was kind of an odd fascination really - bugs...they weren't all that cuddly, some of them bit..some of them were poisonous...no it was a very odd hobby for a colt to have and it made Zangar somewhat curious. "I see, who was it that taught you so much about insects?" He questioned the colt with a glance towards his mother - the only thing weirded then the boy being obsessed with insects would be if the mother hared his obsession and had been the one to get him started on it.

Smiling softly at the larger stallion she was relieved to see that he did have some good manners to him after all. "It is nice to meet you as well." She fell silent as Oloneric went on to explain about the bugs and answer Zangar's question. Honestly she was very impressed that her son not only had such a thirst for knowledge but a large reserve of knowledge as well. Not all foals his age could speak so freely about a certain subject.

When Zangar looked at her after questioning Olo who taught him about insects she let out a bit of a laugh. "Oh I didn't teach him. He knows more about insects that I do."

Why was Zangar looking at him like that? "Well...grandpa taught me a lot, and Mercy and my mom taught me some as well." He glanced at the grass for a moment while he collected his thoughts again. "But...I mostly learned from watching them." If one was patient and could stay still for extended periods of time then they could learn alot about their environment and those that they shared it with. Well now that he had answered several of Zangar's questions he now felt the need to ask one of his own.

"Why do you wear a scarf on your head like that?" He asked curiously head tipped to the side inspecting the cloth. "Isn't it kind of hard to see?" He couldn't imagine walking about with a piece of cloth over his head. Think of all the stuff you would miss if you couldn't see clearly. More curious was the chain that the stallion wore around his tail. What was the purpose behind it if any.

Well that was somewhat of a relief - Zangar wasn't sure if he would know what to say to a bug loving girl, but he supposed that it probably kept the colt out of trouble and there were certainly worse things that one could be interested in. "Ah, well it sounds like you have a good family then" He told the colt "Always important to learn from those older then you are," Not that Zangar was all that interested in learning half the time, he just didn't think the mare would appreciate him telling her son that his interests were a bit odd and creepy.

When he asked about his scarf his ear flicked a bit while he pondered his answer "My mother gave it to me, she has one almost like it...and it keeps the sun out of my eyes" He told Olo - although really Zangar just thought it looked neat wrapped about like that.

Syn remained silent again allowing Olo to hold the conversation on his own. It was good for her son to grow and know it was okay to talk to others, even if most of the time he turned the conversation to insects, but there was little harm in that and at least talking about insects wasn't a dangerous past time. Besides if he was more like his brother she would probably spent all of her time chasing after them trying to stop each from doing something they shouldn't.

Oloneric nodded, yes he did agree that he had a good family. He loved his family very much and while his father wasn't around as much as he hoped for it was still a great family to have. They were all helpful, allowed him to do what he pleased, which wasn't much really other than watching bugs and swimming in the stream. When Zangar explained why he wore the scarf Oloneric thought it made a bit of sense. "Oh." Now that he thought about it the cloth would do a good job of blocking out of the sun.

He glanced at his mother, then to himself before returning his gaze to Zangar. Well Zangar said his mother had given him the scarf but Olo had been given something form his mother too. "My mom gave me some of my markings." He told the large stallion quite proudly, he was a good mix of his mother and fathers patterns but was the same color as his father.

Zangar looked between Syn and Olo as the colt spoke of his markings, now that he was looking for it th stallion could easily pick out the parts that had obviously come from Syn "I can see the resemblance" He told the colt before picking up a back foot to show the colt "My mother gave me my gold markings" He told him and then had to chuckle a bit "I suppose your father must have been green" He comments because the little mare had not a speck of the color on him and Olo was covered in it. "I got most of my coloring from my dad too"

There you see they had some common ground between then which made this conversation flow just a little bit easier. Zangar wondered where the colts father was but decided not to ask in case it wasn't something the mare wanted to talk about - not all families stayed together after all - he ought to know that, just look at his.

Lowering her head Syn grazed on the sweet grass as the two males talked. There was no reason for her to really add to the conversation as they seemed to have found something to talk about and unless a question or comment was directed at her she would simple listen and watch. Perhaps after today Oloneric would feel more comfortable around strangers when talking about things other than insects. Well she could only hope that was the case.

Leaning his head so he could see the markings Zanagr was showing him more clearly Oloneric glanced upon the gold swirls on the stallions legs. "I like them." He commented quietly, they stood out amongst the darker brown and he was surprised that he hadn't noticed them before. Then he nodded his head enthusiastically. "Yeah, dad is green, really green. He has different greens all over him. My brother is all grey like mom and grandpa." Oloneric in the sense was like the odd one of the family, everyone else was various shades of grey where as he was a brilliant splash of greens. Of course that kind of made him special as well.

"Dad doesn't live with us, but he visits lots." He admitted with a bit of a shrug. He really wished his father could be around more but was pretty happy that he did take the time to visit whenever he could. Maybe he would come and visit soon, that would be nice.

PostPosted: Wed May 25, 2011 11:45 am
Zangar nodded his head slowly as the colt described the various other members of his family and the way they lived apart - that struck a bit of a chord in the stallion and he smiled at the colt gently "My father didn't live with me either - my sister and I would visit him and his new mate every so often and spent the rest of the time with my mother, lots of families are like that" He shared briefly wondering if the colt was ever sad about not having his father around all the time, recalling several times when he was young wishing that he could spend more time with his dad. And in that light he went on "But it gets easier as you get older - the you can travel back and forth to visit all the time" And once you were a full adult then things were easier still - but foals sometimes had a hard time grasping the changes of adulthood so he just left it at 'older'

Glancing at the sun Zangar noticed that he had been talking with the colt for a good bit longer then he had meant to stay in the meadow "And speaking of visiting - I'm supposed to be meeting my sister soon so I should get going - but it was nice to meet you Oloneric, Synestra" He nodded politely to the mare whom had remained so quiet throughout the conversation.

After having some grass Synestra turned her attention back to the two boys. The conversation seemed to be wrapping up as Zangar stated he had to meet up with his sister. Probably best that they started to head back home as well so they got there before it was dark. Smiling at the larger stallion she bobbed her head. "It was nice meeting you as well Zangar. Thank you for taking some time out of your day to speak with us." Turning her head she looked towards Oloneric. "We best be heading home now as well." And gave him a little nudge to get him going before turning and walking off.

Knowing that Zangar had been in a similar situation with parents not living together and being told that there were lots of families like that made Oloneric happy. He wasn't the only one out there that sometimes struggled with not having his father around. 'I'll visit him a lot when I'm older." He stated proudly, and really couldn't wait til he was old enough to go and visit his father alone. At his mothers nudging Oloneric bobbed his head. "Okay mom." And then turned his gaze back to Zangar. "I have to go now too."

Dipping his head in a goodbye Oloneric turned and hurried after his mother, but stopped midway to turn his attention back to the larger stallion. "Bye Zangar! Make sure you don't step on any bugs!" And with that the green colt hurries after his mother once more as they headed back home.
