Despair wasn't something that Carlos was used to feeling. Normally, the generally quiet Latino was either indifferent or bored. His feelings rarely showed, but tonight was an exception.

The evening had started out okay enough, with him heading out with his parents to a nice restaurant to celebrate their anniversary, but then the inevitable happened - his father started drinking. Roman, a recovering alcoholic, had always had a nasty temper when he got drunk and tonight had been no exception. As his lips met glass after glass of alcohol his mood decreased with each sip

Carlos had known that as soon as they went to a place that served alcohol, things would head downhill quickly and his intuition had proved him correct once again. When the younger of the two had tried to let the waiter know that his dad should be cut off, his father had heard and started yelling at Carlos. In a rare fit of temper, the sophomore had told his father to stop drinking, that he was ruining the celebration.

Roman had sneered at him, saying, "Why should you care about my drinking habits? It's not like you're even my real son."

Carlos would have brushed it off if he hadn’t seen the look in his mother’s eyes. That look confirmed that this wasn’t just another one of his dad’s throwaway comments that was meant to hurt him for the moment. With grief rolling through his stomach, Carlos took off to the one place he always knew he could seek solace – his best friend’s place.

The mile between the restaurant and Eli’s house and his own had seemed to be ten. Carlos just couldn’t get to the Jones residence fast enough to suit the pit of misery. While he knew that his family wasn’t the greatest when Roman was drinking, there had been plenty of good times along with the bad and he hated knowing those moments were lies.

When at last he saw a familiar light in Eli’s bedroom, he tapped the window quietly in case Mr. and Mrs. Jones were already asleep.

Eli was sitting on his bed, a pair of headphones on loosely around his neck. The music was loud enough that he could hear it. The steal drum beat was catchy, and Eli's head was bobbing to the music as he twirled his pencil before writing something down. His parents had headed out for the evening, saying they needed a 'date night' once in a while, leaving Eli alone. So being bored, he was doing his homework.

After a moment, he thought his music was scratching, hearing a tapping. He leaned over and paused the stereo. But the tapping persisted. Turning his chair he looked at the window where the sound seemed to be coming from. Tossing the headphones aside he moved to the window and pushed the curtains aside and saw Carlos standing there. It was unusual for him to come to the window. Without thinking, Eli pulled the window open and popped the screen out and offered his hand to help his friend inside. "You look like a mess..." He said softly, worried slightly over the way his friend looked. "And coming to my window...? My parents aren't even home..." When Carlos was inside, he put his window back together before motioning to the bed to sit down.

"What happened?"

Carlos threw himself down on Eli’s bed, his shaking hands rising to put his already mussed hair into further disarray. The blue highlights scattered beneath his fingertips as he groaned, “I found out something horrible Eli.”

His normally calm voice was shaky with his upset. Carlos’ mind was in a snare as he stared at his best friend of twelve years. He opened his mouth to say something but couldn’t make his lips form the words. Instead he just turned his eyes to the ceiling and prayed for a moment’s relief.

Eli watched Carlos for a bit. It sounded bad. Really bad. It'd been a long time since he'd seen his friend this upset. The darker skinned boy sat next to Carlos on the bed. He looked up as well, seemingly finding the same spot that Carlos had transfixed his gaze on. "You were crying the day we met." He said, leaning back against the headboard of his bed. "You remember? That cat that was lying in the road, and you were upset that it was dead." He reminisced. "I'd just gotten back from nana's funeral, and said we could bury it like that. We were digging in the bushes out front when my mom came to get me for lunch. She dragged us inside and made us take a bath while she cleaned our clothes and tried to figure out who you were. And Dad buried it and told us it was a raccoon." He smiled fondly at the memory. They'd been friends since then, and darn near inseparable.

He cast a glance back at Carlos who was still fidgeting with his hair. Eli plopped his hand on the blue streaked head and smoothed Carlos's hair. "I won't make you tell me." He said softly, though he did want to know, so he knew how to help. "But I'm here for you, man." Eli hated, simply hated seeing Carlos look like this.

As Carlos listened to Eli recounting the first time they’d met, he felt tears well up in his eyes. The younger of the two had run away from home in an attempt to not have to listen to his father screaming. Carlos had been upset then, and it had seemed almost natural to finally let his feelings out when he’d seen the raccoon get hit by the car. As traumatic an experience that had been, he hadn’t cried for the poor raccoon, he’d cried for the way his father yelled and screamed at him.

Carlos smiled in a self-deprecating way, wondering if even then his father, no his stepfather had hated him even then. It was funny; he had always run to Eli when things got rough with his family. Carlos recounted the times he had run away from home, remembering how each time the words of wrongdoing had come to his lips.

This time was different, however, and he didn’t know how to let his best friend know. The Jones’ home had become his safe haven and he didn’t know how he could handle bringing the latest of bitter feelings to their doorstep. Closing his eyes, he knew that the only way he could make it right was if he got the hurt out.

“You know how tonight is my parent’s anniversary?” He began softly, his voice halting after the question. Perhaps the telling would be easier if he took it slowly.

"Yeah..." Eli said hesitantly. He sat silently as he listened to Carlos retell what had happened. The outburst was uncalled for... but to learn that it was actually true? It sort of gripped Eli's heart; a hand squeezing and wouldn't let go. What could he say to make Carlos feel better? What do you say to something like that? He was used to Carlos appearing at his house, usually at the front door though. So instead, Eli remained silent, letting his hand fall from Carlos's head. He paused a moment to wipe some of the moisture from his cheek before placing his hand over Carlos's. All the while his mind was racing, wondering what to say, what to do...

"Wanna crash here tonight?" He asked after several minutes of strained silence.

Carlos had told his tale and when Eli asked, after several awkward moments of silence, if he would like to spend the night the answer had been an easy decision. After a few moments to clear his throat of the tears clogging his throat, he murmured, “I thought you’d never ask.” He opened his eyes and offered his friend a sad smile. “What would I do without you, man?” He should really get up and take a shower but he honestly didn’t feel like it though his body was coated with grime.

"Maybe I was waiting for you to ask if you could." Eli teased gently, his hand giving Carlos' a squeeze. "Ya know you're always welcome here." Eli started to wonder where the air mattress went. He should get it out of Carlos was going to stay here tonight. Oh, and something for him to sleep in. Geeze, short notice like this always left him scrambling to try and make things comfortable for Carlos.

Or whoever else dropped by when his family wasn't expecting it. Impromptu family reunions were NOT fun when suddenly 20 family members showed up at your door. Oh well, whatever. This wasn't like that. It was Carlos, and Eli was always happy to have his best friend over. But sitting here wasn't finding the bed.

"I should go get the air mattress." Eli laughed. "You know the drill. Make yourself at home, yeah? If you need something I'll be back in a few." He didn't need to tell Carlos he had free reign on the bathroom if he needed it, or that he could raid his closet for something. They'd been through this several times whenever Carlos ended up here without warning. Eli brushed the hair from Carlos' forehead and without thinking places a comforting kiss to his brow before leaving his room. It hadn't even dawned on him what he'd done till he pulled the ladder to the attic down and was half way up in search of the lost mattress.

Carlos grinned sheepishly at his friend’s gentle teasing. When the other got up to go get the air mattress, Carlos was about to stand up as well – that is, until Eli decided to kiss his forehead. That… was awkward and somehow, welcome. Odd warmth flushed through his system originating at the place where Eli had kissed him. With a frown knitting Carlos’ brow, he got up and walked to the bathroom.

As he tossed aside his clothing and turned on the water to get it to a temperature he liked, his mind was filled with the memory of Eli’s kiss. The longer he continued to think about it, the longer the water ran and the more that warmth spread. When he finally shook himself out of his reprieve he turned the water toward cold and climbed in with a grimace. What was going on with him tonight?

After he showered and was a little calmer, he dressed in an awkward hurry. Carlos didn’t know what was happening to him but he couldn’t let Eli know the reaction he had had to that kiss. When he was finished he walked back out to Eli's bedroom rubbing his still damp hair with a towel.

He heard the water heater kick on. The attic always had a rumble when the shower was in use. It was unnerving until you got used to it.When he found the box with the bed, he pushed it towards the stairs and set about gathering extra bedding. Pillow, sheets, blankets... and then carried it all into his room. As he sat, setting up the bed; plugging it in and turning on the pump to fill it, Eli began to wonder if he had in fact simply imagined what had happened. That had to be it. He was only thinking about what his mom would do if he were upset. There was no way he would have kissed Carlos of all people... right?

He was working the sheets onto the bed when Carlos finished his shower and returned.

As Carlos continued to towel dry his hair, he was oblivious to the presence of his best friend. The half Cuban half/Japanese male was so absorbed with his own thoughts it took him several minutes to become aware of the sound of the pump slowly filling the air mattress. With a start, he dropped the towel from his face and began to blush at Eli. How was he supposed to act? Surely friends didn’t have that sort of reaction to each other – right?

As his silence continued to lengthen, he wondered if Eli would even notice. It wasn’t as if Carlos was a talkative person – he’d learned long ago that if he kept his head down and didn’t make too much noise, he could skate by without causing a fight at home. Then again, this was Eli not some random person he barely knew. They talked about pretty much everything together and somehow things always worked themselves out. Maybe he should just mention that kiss…?

Turning off the motor, Eli stood up, his back still to Carlos. "Sorry yer stuck with the pink sheets. It was all I could find. Not that you'll see the color when you're asleep, right?" He laughed lightly, stepping around the mattress to turn off his stereo and head to his closet. "I don't need to tell ya how to work that thing, right? You know how to get comfortable, yeah?" It seemed like every word made the air more awkward. He quickly retreated into the walk in closet to change. "Y... you good to sleep in that, right?" Eli leaned against the wall of the small clothe-filled sanctuary. He was gripping a dark Tshirt, the painted logo decal long since cracked and peeled off, tightly, almost to the point of tearing the shirt in frustration. It meant nothing. It meant nothing. They could be cool about this. Eli just had to think cool thoughts, right? Finishing changing, he tossed the dirty clothes into a hamper, well, he attempted to. But he didn't care enough. Things could just dangle over the side for now. Whatever! He didn't care.

"... oh, ya need anything? Food or something? I know you were out ta dinner and all that. But... ya know." He shrugged, trying to be a good host, like his parents practically beat into him. This was awkward. Was it too early to just go to bed and forget about this?

With the air still crowded with awkward feelings, Carlos shrugged his shoulders and lay down on the air mattress. He could bring up the kiss in the morning – tonight was just too dramatic. Maybe in the morning the artist would feel the need to express his confusion aloud – but not tonight. Rolling to where his back was to his best friend, Carlos let his eyes close and pretended to be asleep.

Oh good, It seemed like Carlos was going to bed. Eli moved to turn off the light, then flopped on his bed. He could only pray that he'd fall asleep quickly.

It didn't.

Eli found himself tossing most of the night trying to get to sleep. It wasn't until Eli's alarm began screaming for him to get up. Eli almost knocked it to the floor trying to turn it off. He was so tired. When did he fall asleep? He wasn't sure he HAD fallen asleep. But he drug himself out of bed, yawning, tugging at his dreads, trying to fix his hair. He almost stepped on the mattress Carlos was on. Right, Carlos!

"Hey man, sleep well? Feel up to going to school?" He was worried that Carlos would either sulk here in his room today, and Eli couldn't afford to ditch many classes today. Not with 2 tests, a quiz, and a project about to be assigned. And what would happen if he went home today?
