There were a grand total of three televisions going over the bar. One was flashing the wild body-to-body collisions of a rather enthusiastic hockey game, bedecked men slamming each other against the glass. Another was a basketball game -- at a quiet moment, just now, refs arguing quietly to themselves about some kind of call, a very tall young man standing in preparation at the foul line.
The one Ever had settled in front of, however, was baseball. It wasn't that he had any great love for the sport; to the contrary, there were enough bad associations in his memory to leave him a little sour, in general. However, with a drink in front of him, clear and smelling like vodka and mostly drained, it became more tolerable -- and it was, after all, the only one he really understoond the rules of.
He looked out of place, in here. Mostly the crowd seemed to be rougher than him, older, not alone but in little clusters of three or four. This was a Guys Night Out kind of bar, the place where regulars knew enough other and laughed uproariously in the corner, or shouted at the TV screens as if they could somehow impact the result of the game. In contrast, Ever was too young and too quiet. He sat at the bar, worked on his drink, and watched the game in a fascinated sort of way.
He'd been pining for television, any television, and at the very least this kicked that craving.

The door to the bar jingled when Kam opened it, setting off the tiny bell hung over the frame above. A few eyes swiveled in his direction, followed by a few whispers mumbled quietly about the tall, two hundred plus pounds of dark skin and dreads that lumbered between booths. For what it was worth, Kam either didn't notice or didn't care - he wasn't confronted very often for the same reasons that people noticed him in the first place. Besides, all he really wanted was some booze.
"Hey Kam, where's Penny at tonight, eh?" The bartender called out to him before he even fell onto a stool close to the small, pale haired kid that he didn't recognize. The comment got a lopsided grin from the Indian man, which went at least a little way to soften his features, but only a little.
"Working, like ******** always, dude. She's trying to see if she can give herself a damn heart attack before thirty." He reached out for one of the flimsy plastic menus tucked behind the napkin dispensers and flopped it down on the top of the bar. He'd read it a hundred times before and only read it out of habit. A couple of minutes of browsing over the blocky text and he simply shoved it to the side and made a nodding gesture at the bartender - universal man code for grabbing attention.
"Give me a beer and some hot wings, and don't get skimpy with the ******** sauce this time." He paid attention just long enough for the chuckling bartender to slide a mug of foam-topped beer down the bar to him, then he was glancing up at the nearest TV and whatever sport it happened to be broadcasting.
He was paying attention for all of two minutes before a bad hit sent a foul ball flying off screen, which in turn sent Kam's hands flying out to his sides in protest. Of course, he managed to knock over condiment bottles and shakers, all of it rolling in random circles on the bar top - some right in Ever's direction. <******** hell, can't I get a break?" He was mumbling a thousand curses under his breath, but he slid off the stool and started to right all of the disarranged bottles while the bartender laughed from where he was drying mugs across from him.

At another moment, Ever might have reacted more quickly to the approach, to the chatter. Today, though, it was an annoying hum at the edge of his senses, invading into the small world of him and Major League baseball, television and vodka. Dark eyes barely flicked onto the stranger as he settled down, taking in his size and then his bearing, to make sure he wasn't looking for a fight. Generally, Ever didn't do well in fights with big men almost twice his size.
Once the threat had been assessed and dismissed, though, his attention was back on the game in a single-minded way that made him seem much drunker than a vodka tonic and a half should have made anyone. He wasn't prepared for the assault of Kam's arms going up, and his reaction as he caught the movement out of the corner of his eye was a start, a twitch, halfway off the stool and with his own glass gone sideways.
It was definitely not cool to jump up like a terrified teenager, spilling almost a half a finger of vodka across the wood, just because a stranger threw up his hands in frustration. Ever was well aware.
At least he moved quickly, if crookedly, to help clean up: snatching napkins out of the holder at the end of the bar and spreading them out across the mess with a quiet curse of his own. A pepper shaker rolled in a semi-circle, slowing and teetering for a moment before finally tumbling off the edge of the bar. Ever snatched it before it had really gotten far and looked as surprised as anyone else that he'd actually caught the damned thing.
"...uh." He held it out to the stranger, giving him a second assessment and coming slowly into focus. "Not that bad, actually. At least you didn't make a mess."

Kam's eyes snapped up to Ever when the pale boy darted off his stool like it was on fire, catching Kam's attention faster than the clang of all the bottles falling over. He was halfway to setting up a plastic ketchup bottle when he saw the paler kid dart back and, almost from pure luck, catch a pepper shaker out of mid-air.
"Thanks, dude," he took the offered shaker and set it beside the salt shaker her had just turned upright, "nice catch." Even if he was being polite, his jaw was set tight and his eyes were narrowed on the display that he couldn't get just quite right again. After he stared at it for a long time, he simply shrugged his shoulders and fell back on his seat with a simple "******** it" muttered under his breath.
The once neat, well organized display arranged in order from small to large and all tucked together was now haphazardly set in a random lump of sizes of space. Kam didn't have an eye for that kind of thing and he was definitely not about to spend more than a couple of minutes comparing it to the other ones around the bar. He had picked them all up, that was about as much as anyone could expect from him.
He took a long swig of beer from his mug and threw a sideways glance back at the kid that had helped. "Do you need more napkins or something?" He was already leaning out to the opposite direction to snare a small pile of napkins that he just tossed in Ever's direction, letting them land soundlessly on the bar between them.

"I need a new drink." It could have come out snappish and annoyed, could have been a dig or a hint. Instead, however, Ever sounded mournful as he said it, considering the drops still clinging to the inside of his empty glass. He flicked a look upward to make sure the bartender wasn't watching and then swiped several pieces of scattered glass off the countertop to the floor below. Someone would get that with a mop later, right?
Only after he'd done it would he think of the big man beside him, attention shifting to see if he'd watched the surreptitious 'clean up'. It wasn't so much that Ever felt bad as that he didn't want to get called out.
He put on a sheepish expression just in case.
"It's okay, I'm an idiot's all." There, big friendly stupid eyes. He went to swipe hair out of his face and decided his hand was too sticky from the drink, and clutched at fresh napkins instead.

Kam watched him try to 'dispose' of the evidence with a rather curious expression, though he still only glanced at him from the corner of his eyes at best. It was convenient for him, because the second that the other guy turned to look at him he simply averted his eyes to the game above his head and concentrated on taking a large gulp of his beer. Nope, he wasn't watching, that expression on his face was completely innocent.
All told, Kam didn't really give a s**t. He'd done worse in worse places, many times over, and he wasn't exactly Destiny City's most upstanding citizen despite whatever he did as a nightjob. As far as he was concerned, it was way too late to be this sober and if he could help himself or the new guy reach the point of complete and total inebriation faster, then that was just what he was going to do. Sure, Kam wasn't a sharing kind of guy most of the time, but he couldn't just turn a cold shoulder when the complete stranger had managed to stay so cool about Kam's bull-in-a-china-shop routine.
It was just convenient timing when the bartender came by to set down a heaping basket of wings in front of him. Before he started to walk away again, Kam pulled a folded bill out of his wallet and flagged him back down.
"Hey, get him another whatever it was, would ya?" The bartender's eyebrows rose in a momentary expression of surprise, but he grabbed the dollar bill, mixed the drink, and slid it back down to Ever without a question. Money was money, no matter who or where it came from. He wasn't going to ask questions about Kam's change in attitude if he was waving something green in his face.
Kam just nodded at him once the new drink was safely on the bar in front of him and picked up a wing to start his not-so-graceful consumption of nightly junk food. At least without Penny around there wouldn't be any eating contests tonight to scare off the locals.

Ever blinked at the drink, genuinely surprised, still half off-his stool -- and then his expression melted, from sorrow or concern or stealth to something more pointedly friendly. A smile, sudden and bright, his fingers curled around the top of the glass. Kam had just bought him a drink. Kam was now his best friend.
Anywhere else, he might have made a snide comment, teasing, about attractive men buying him booze. He had enough experience in places like this to know that those kinds of comments were courting trouble. Most sports fans were reasonable guys, if tending toward a high dosage of testosterone, but every now and then you found one with something to prove. So instead he dropped back onto his stool and relaxed, eyes flashing over the game [damn, he'd apparently missed something exciting, the crowd was up out of its seats] and then to Kam's food.
"Thanks." There, that was nice. Normal. Friendly. Non-suggestive and failing to push any buttons. Even with the ice disposal and his cursing, Ever thought he was making a pretty good impression. He gestured vaguely to the wings, clinging to his drink. "...are those hot?"

Whatever exciting thing had happened to make the whole bar stand up had also grabbed Kam's attention, leaving him slack jawed with one half eaten wing in his hand and his fingers already coated in the warm, bright orange sauce. When Ever finally spoke back up though, he drew his slightly glazed eyes away from the screen and tried to focus on the tall, slender boy.
"It's all good, dude," Kam just shrugged the thank you off, though he did notice the change in Ever's demeanor. Kam really wasn't the express-your-feelings kind of personality though, which also meant he wasn't that keen on others expressing their own to him. As long as the guy didn't try to hug him or something it would be just fine.
He glanced down at the wings when Ever asked about them, as if he had just noticed them despite the fact that he had already devoured a few and was holding yet another in his hand. Again, he shrugged, but instead of just ignoring him he at least looked back up afterward.
"I've had hotter, but they're not half bad. They're cheap and edible which works for me." He emphasized that by taking another bite of the wing in his hand, then used the back of said hand to wipe a smear of sauce from his mouth. He watched Ever for a long moment and then, just barely containing the pained look he would have normally expressed, he pushed the basket towards him a little.
"Wanna try one?" He was trying to be civil at least. Maybe he just missed Penny's company.

The expression he turned on Kam, settled back into his chair, was one of false innocence. It wasn't like he'd been fishing for a wing or anything, right? At the offer, though, he leaned in and delicately nabbed one, flashing Kam another brief grin.
"Thank you." Ever was polite enough for that, at least, even if he was already leaning back into his own space to devour the thing. His own eyes lifted up to the screen and elbows on the counter, he looked more at home now than he had before. It only would have been more appropriate if he'd actually gone for beer instead...
It was hotter than he'd expected it to be, in all honesty, from Kam's casual dismissal. It meant three bites and he was chasing after his drink -- and then wishing he had water or milk instead. Stupid. His fingers were still covered in sauce, and his expression more amused than anything else.
"...you're braver than I am."

Kam had watched Ever as he took the wing and settled to eat it, his expression fairly passive, though he was obviously waiting to see exactly how he reacted to them.
Then Ever was scrambling for his drink which Kam knew from experience would do nothing to help and he couldn't contain the deep laugh that sent him rocking on his stool. He brought the back of his not-completely-dirty hand up and wiped at eyes that weren't actually watering just yet, then settled back down and threw a sly smirk in Ever's direction.
"You tried it, that's the brave part," judging bravery by handling spice was about as helpful as judging strength through a beer drinking contest, but Kam liked both of those things and probably didn't see the problem in it. Instead he just shrugged his shoulders and took another bite of his deep, red-orange wings. "I've just destroyed half my taste buds with worse than this, already. It's an acquired taste."
He leaned out then and grabbed some of the unused napkins he had passed over originally wiping off one hand as well as he could. Then he thrust it out at the much paler, smaller figure.
"Kamboja, but you can just call me Kam."

"Ever, and you can call me that." Yes, yes, it was hilarious; Ever rolled his eyes a little as he took the napkins from Kam, but his expression at least held a similar note of amusement. He didn't take himself too seriously, swatting at his mouth and rubbing his fingers clean before he shook. His hand shake was likely surprisingly firm, considering how slight he looked. Well-trained.
Then his eyes turned back to the wing. It was only half eaten. It was possible he was considering a second attempt.
"...vodka is definitely not the right pairing." His tone was mild -- too mild. It was a caricature of wine critics or fancy-diners who took their food rather seriously. He turned the wing over, napkin crumpled into his palm and his head tilted to the side. It was a terrible plan but...
He went for another bite. It was probably just as hot as the first, but he thought maybe it was a little better, this time. His eyes still twitched sideways to Kam's celery, though.

"Ever it is, then!" He saluted him with his mug of beer and a small smirk, then took a huge gulp of it. He might not have been as entertaining as Penny was after booze and wings, but Kam was pretty content with his current company. It could have been worse, like some of the boozers in the last bar he'd visited alone.
He set his mug back down and glanced over just in time to see the contemplation plastered on Ever's face. The logical thing would have been to tell him not to do it, it would have been the nice thing. Instead, a grin split Kam's face and he leaned a little towards the lanky guy in anticipation.
"Come oon, do it!" He even made a little supportive fist pump for him.
Then he was laughing in both pride and amusement as Ever actually did it and, as a reward for officially being the most amusing thing Kam had seen all day, he slid the basket over so Ever could have the yucky green stalks he was eyeballing.
"You're not half bad, bro."

His mouth was burning; hot. This wasn't the kind of food he was used to, certainly. Generally what his mother cooked had been bland and burned -- never enough pepper on the chicken, which was dry as bone, never enough butter in the potatoes, green beans so underdone they'de barely even looked at the stove. Perhaps this was why, in general, Ever didn't care much about food.
And perhaps that was why the celery appealed to him so much. He grabbed a stalk to chew on immediately, and looked perfectly pleased by it. If he'd known Kam wasn't going to eat them, Ever might have gone for them right away....
"You're a bad influence, though." It was dryly teasing around the piece of celery, fingers crumpled into his napkin and eyes flicking over his drink. Ever'd had just enough to be pink around the edges. "Do you always encourage people to do stupid things?"

Kam grinned slyly as Ever accused him of being a bad influence and simply shrugged his shoulders. For a moment he truly seemed like he wasn't going to respond, instead choosing to take a deep gulp of his beer and letting his eyes drift back up to the ballgame. Then that grin spread and he finally looked back down at him.
"Mostly," he glanced away just long enough to slide his now empty beer mug towards the bar tender with a symbolic rise of his brows, then looked back at Ever again. "What's life without a little adventure though? I've got no interest in this boring nine to five lifestyle everyone else is so keen on in this a** backwards town."
The bartender refilled his mug and slid it back down to him and Kam managed a lazy, but appreciative smile. He wasn't exactly buzzed yet (it took a lot to influence someone with so much body weight, then there was his personal tolerance to consider) but he was feeling pretty relaxed. He pulled his basket of wings back towards him just enough so he could pluck out another one and begin tearing the meat away from the bone.
"Live for the moment, kiddo." He actually had no idea how old Ever was, but anyone smaller than him was generally labeled as such - which meant a lot of people. Except maybe Penny, but only because she would have made him regret it immensely.

"I always do." He was still speaking around a napkin, of course, his eyes not-quite watering but damned close. Ever meant it, though. That was his policy. Try not to think too hard about tomorrow, or yesterday, or worry about the bigger picture. It was getting harder and harder to stick to that, of course...
His expression muted, then brightened all at once, dark eyes locking onto Kam and eyebrows twitching up and down in a vaguely-suggestive, somewhat-teasing manner. He was grinnig again. Seemed like he always was.
"In light of that, let's do shots. I think I have another twenty somewhere..." It'd take some hunting, though, fingers dipping into all of his pockets twice before he came up with a crumpled-up, very-old bundle of bills. A twenty and four ones. Not exactly a fortune.
