Grasswhistle watched silently at the stream as it carried stray leaves from the wind on its back, twisting and spiraling in the current. His eyes closed as he took a deep breathe, taking in the earthly smells on the swamp.

When he opened them again, the scene before him subtly changed, as sunlight filtered through the treetops, creating small patches of light on the ground and water. He nudged a hoof at a light patch before him, creating a small indent as he displaced dirt.

Turning his head back towards the stream, he slowly walked towards the edge, and lowered his head enough to see his reflection, distorted by soft ripples. When seemingly satisfied, he dipped his head, proceeding to take a drink from the cool stream.

Peregrine walked about, being a colt he had finally gotten good well... life. The nearly full-grown kimeti wandered about wondering where this life would take him. His introspective musing were disturbed by another presence. Peregrine cautiously approached, his body was ready to flee at a moment's notice. This was a full-grown kimeti, who could be in the market for a new watering spot, which was at the moment, Peregrine's favorite watering spot. Slowly the kimeti began to take decisive steps toward the stream, right hoof first and then the left. In mere moments, the two were inches away, and Peregrine leaned down, taking a slow, gingerly sip from the fluid stream.

After his drink, Peregrine looked up and asked innocently, "who are you?"

Hearing the sound of hooves against ground, Grasswhistle's ears twitched, but he didn't turn, continuing to drink from the stream. He glanced to his side, seeing a brown reflection beside him, but couldn't make out who it was.

Finishing his drink, he turned his head, seeing a young brown colt beside him.

"Why, hello there, young one. My name is Grasswhistle, but you may call me Whistle, if you wish."

Turning his body towards him, he closed his eyes and bowed his head. As if in response to his introduction, the wind picked up slightly, twisting through the leaf blades and tree branches. It made a soft whistling sound as it blew through the leaf blades under his left ear, giving reason for his name. Opening his eyes, he looked at the young colt curiously.

"And what is your name, little one? What brings you to this part of the swamp?"

Peregrine puffed out his chest the best he could, his neck lifted and turned, to face Grasswhistle. "My name is Peregrine, and this is my watering hole." The young kimeti used a cold glare, in order to supplement the verbal male bravado he had displayed. Cautiously to prevent falling over and appearing lame, Peregrine took a few careful steps backwards, his gaze never breaking.

Clearing his throat, Peregrine decided it would be in his best interest to take the reins of the conversation; "Tell me your tale, Grasswhistle." Although outwardly, Peregrine seemed very conversationally fluid, it was his first time talking to another kimeti. Peregrine had practiced talking to his pet eaglehound, Triage, but he couldn't really reply.

Seeing the young colt's hostile reaction, Grasswhistle couldn't help but chuckle.

"Oh, is that so, young one? I am sorry to have intrude without your permission," he replied, bowing his head once more. "But do not worry, I wish you no harm, Peregrine."

He blinked at the colt's request.

"A tale?" He couldn't think of any story to tell, and wasn't sure if he was asking about his naming dream, but it didn't look like the colt would take 'no' for an answer.

"Well, what would you like to hear?"

Following the older kimeti's reply, Peregrine's face would become host to a confused look. Perhaps he wasn't very skilled in using his words yet. Taking a deep breath, the young kimeti tried to speak once more, hopefully more effectively this time. "The story of your life good sir, I would like to hear it." The stream water was cool and refreshing, Peregrine helped himself to another serving of the life-giving liquid, before settling down on the soft grass beneath him. His face now held an eager expression, curious to hear about Grasswhistle.

Not being able to help but raise an eyebrow at the response, Grasswhistle opened his mouth to respond, but closed his mouth as he saw Peregrine plop down on the grass before him, an eager expression on his face. It seemed no matter what he said, the colt wouldn't budge from the spot until he heard what he wanted to hear.

Smiling, Grasswhistle followed Peregrine's example, getting down on all four until he was in a comfortable kneeling position. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath as he tried to recollect his thoughts, and slowly expelled air through his nostrils. When he finally thought of something to say, he opened his eyes slowly, giving Peregrine a solemn and serious look.

"Have you ever heard the tale of the mystical songbird?"

Peregrine tried his best to hide behind a detached, uninterested, and slightly stoic guise, but despite his best attempts; Peregrine's expression contorted into one resembling awe and excitement, before he reined in his emotions and returned to his calmer demeanor. "I have not heard that tale before.... Do tell Grasswhistle..."

Grasswhistle smiled at the slight hint of enthusiasm Peregrine seemed to show, despite his attempt to hide it. It reminded up of himself, always so curious, always asking questions, when he was just a young colt.

"I'm not surprised you haven't heard of it," he chuckled. "I myself have only heard of this tale when I was like you, but a young colt."

His eyes drifted off into the distance as his mind dove into the nostalgic memories. He wanted to tell Peregrine all about the story he heard, but first, he had to start at the beginning. His naming dream. Or, at least what he could remember of it.

"I remember when I was still in my sac, I was sleeping, dreaming, breathing... Everything around me was just a blur. I heard the voices of the sisterbrothers, felt the embrace of the motherfather. But what I remember clearly to this day, was a song. It was unlike any I heard before. A sweet soothing melody, similar to the ones sung by songbirds, yet seemingly different. It was softer, sweeter, a whisper..."

Grasswhistle trailed off as his eyes glazed over the horizon, lost in thought.

Peregrine puffed out his chest ever so carefully, although the first impression had already been made; this was like the extended version, because it was technically still Grasswhistle's first impression of him, since this was their first meeting. At any rate, Peregrine had become annoyed, "you promised me at tale of a mystical songbird," he said, putting emphasis on the word mystical. In Grasswhistle's rendition, the bird sounded like better than extremely good singer, boring! "Where's the magic? The excitement!" Peregrine's expression matched his inner feelings, complete and utter disappointment.

((Long post is long. oAo))

He quirked an eyebrow and only chuckled at the outburst.

"Patience, Peregrine, I never said I got to the good part yet, did I?" he teased, a twinkle in his eye.

"Now where was I... oh yes, the voice. It seemed as if it were speaking to me, beckoning me to come forth. I remember stepping forward, searching, trying to find out where it came from. It was then that I felt it, something ethereal, something magical. The branches bowed, leaves danced, grass blades wavered in the wind, but no, it wasn't just wind. I didn't know what it was at the time, but I heard a soft melody, trill, not from birds, but from the wind. But how was this possible? Wind did not speak. As I pondered this, the wind swirled and twirled, bended and twisted. As I stared in awe, the wind formed a creature, wings enveloping the trees, its tail passed through the tree trunks, like a carpet of moss. Its eyes were bright as fireflies, and most shocking, was that it seemed to be made of a substance similar to the air. Barely visible, yet just enough to feel its presence. I stared at it in curiosity and awe, and as I opened my mouth to ask, it spoke:"

I am the one that gives wind its voice.
Each song, each shriek, each sound it makes.
I weave among the trees and stone, a whine, a hum, to each belong
a mark in nature welly done.
Branches moan, the grass, it whistles,
each one a voice its very own.

"With that, it vanished, and I don't remember much of what happened after, but several days after I hatched from my sac, there were several grass blades beneath my left ear, and each time I shook my head, I would hear a soft whistle. To others, they just assumed that grass blades somehow got stuck within the sac when I was born, but I knew, I knew that it was a gift from the creature I saw, whom I learned later was the mystical songbird, a tale within a tale."

When he finished, he took a deep breath, and grinned at the colt.

"And that, young colt, is the tale of how the wind got its voice, and my naming dream."

The young kimeti was taken aback, Grasswhistle had indeed saved the best part for last. Peregrine would've clapped, but he lacked the necessary appendages for that action. Instead he opted to voice his pleasure instead; "A great tale Grasswhistle. You do not disappoint, not one bit." Peregrine nodded his head profusely, in order to punctuate his point. The excited colt opened his mouth to speak again, but found himself unable. The words simply wouldn't come out. Suddenly everything went black, and Peregrine fainted.

In his mind, he saw vivid images, snapshots of scenes. The only two kimeti in them were himself and Grasswhistle. People came and went from a small tent with others standing in a line, waiting to make their way inside.

Grasswhistle smiled at the young colt's delight.

"I'm glad you enjoyed it," he laughed. "If you wish, I'd love to tell you more stories, but-"

Before he could finish his sentence, the colt collapsed, and Whistle gasped, frozen slightly by shock. He quickly rushed to the colt's side, and nudged him softly, carefully to not jolt him too much should it bring him into another shock.

"Peregrine! Peregrine!"

He only hoped his voice would reach him.
