During the month I acquired an old Enfield No.4 Mk.I, and I've been looking into turning it into a project rifle, of sorts. I found a nice screw-on picatinny/weaver scope mount for it, so I'd like to get a 10x or 12x fixed power scope to accompany it. Reason I want fixed power is not only because I'm looking to turn this rifle into a proper sniper rifle (with modern components, of course), but because I already have a fixed power scope that I plan on using for hunting (1.75-4x32 Bushnell). I'd like something that costs less than $300 and those with experience with scopes know for a fact is reliable.

Any ideas that can be offered would be greatly appreciated.

a proper sniper rifle in 1942 = fixed power

proper sniper rifle today = variable

proper sniper rifle period = either of these, but mounting a 12x power hubble space telescope on the rifle isn't the way.

you want something that gives you a wide field of view that includes your target among it in the crosshair, not the entire view taken up by the target.

russian snipers during WWII did just awesome with their x4 power PU scopes, ja?

I suppose. Maybe I'll just go with NcStar like I had originally intended. Their prices seem to be pretty reasonable.

Any input from you as to what would work on an old Enfield like that? Maybe bump it up to a 6x, but make it variable power?

that'll be alright.

The one variable power scope I saw that I liked on NcStar was 3-12x, but I can get it for $85 and it's got the illuminated rangefinder reticule. Hopefully it's built to last, but this one looks to be the one I want.

hmm.
maybe, the higher you go in power with a cheap scope however, the darker the view will be usually.

now if it's a US optics, a zeiss or a leupold on the other hand not only will it be clearer but the quality of build and the materials is much better.

as for everything in the world today, you pretty much get what you pay for.
