Petro can read and write in two languages. He can add and subtract accurately (just please don't ask him to do complicated algebra). He was in no way illiterate. While all this was true, it didn't mean he actually liked reading unless required. And even then it was like pulling teeth because most of the books he needed to read were not the sort of books he liked. It wasn't history or legends or straightforward texts. It was stuff some old demon dude who Tro swore he was "Gonna punch y' in the face if I ever meet y', Stakespear."

He continued to mutter angrily even as he entered the school library in search of study guides that might help him begin to decipher the book and its message. Of course, it's only when he sat down at a table and stared at the pile of books he'd gotten does it occur to him that "'S gonna take FOREVER!" he yelled in frustration, completely forgetting he was in a library.

Sheridan was perfectly at home in the library, content to surround himself with books, parchments, and papers, browsing through fiction and no-fiction alike for books that were not in his own collection. It was one of the first two places anyone searching for the dragon should search, the other being the roof.

His tail twitched as he read, flipping through the pages of a particularly interesting text on halloween plants and fungi. Ears lowered, his nose buried deeper into his book, doing his best to tune out the growing noise. Sigh, so much for reading in quiet.

The twitching of his tail had grown more intense, until the gentle flick ended with an irritated snap at Petro's sudden outburst. A brow raised, the dragon peered across the table over the top of his book at Petro who had ironically chosen the seat across from him.

"Something wrong?"

Petro looked up from the books splayed open, the frustrated frown still evident on the horse student's face. "Yeah, if y' call needing to read alla this something wrong," he answered grimly, gesturing to the study guides and the sole Stakespear book he held, not even thinking the celestial dragon might actually not find the idea so difficult or bothersome. "'S going to take longer'n figuring out the answer to that stupid riddle back on the island." He glowered about the one short-coming he displayed back then that he didn't feel particularly ashamed of having.

The dragon's eyes narrowed, scanning over the titles of the books sprawled across the table.

"You're right, the works of Ten-a-scream Williams would be much more appealing."

He had never been much on Stakespear. Not that there weren't a few good works here and there, however for the most part he felt they were overrated and dull, trying far to hard to hide what they were truly about. However that might not have been exactly what the horse had meant...

"However if you must read Stakespear, I would suggest 'A Mid-October Night's Scream'."

Again, most likely not what Petro had meant.

There may have been a visible shudder at the mention of that island, or at least restrained facepalm at the idiocy of the riddle that wasn't really a riddle that held the password to the portal that stupidly ran on windows.

Petro rifled through the pages of his notebook, bringing out a severely creased piece of paper. He scanned his handwriting, neat despite the round cursive figures of his native tongue, "Don't see Ten-guy or his stuff on the list of books. That other Stakespear book's here though," he noted, pointing to a particular line, "But Groady-o and Boo-liet's got easier study guides."

He canted his head, now unsure which book he was going to tackle first. "Y' ever finish any've Stakespear's stuff?" Petro asked, looking very hopeful at the celestial dragon.
PostPosted: Tue May 17, 2011 12:58 pm

"I have."

Sheridan nodded, though there wasn't much enthusiasm behind the gesture. Did he dislike Stakespear that much, or was he disappointed that his suggestion of better reading material had been turned down?

He had put down his own book, setting it neatly on the table beside him having concluded that it would be some time before he would get back to reading it. Now he was more thoroughly scanning over the books that Petro had brought to the table. Of course there were more study guides for Groady-o and Boo-liet, everyone and their great grandmother had written a guide on that one, why it was so popular he would never understand.

But it was Petro's project, therefore his choice of what to read. Still, it was a shame Williams had been left off the list.

"You need help?"

It was far from an insult to Petro's intelligence, he simply knew how difficult it could be to read something one was not interested in.

Petro would have leaped at the chance to read something not by Stakespear, oh he so would have. Old common was hard enough to understand as it is. The imagery and symbolisms would only serve to further frustrate the monster horse to perhaps violent levels. So when Sheridan made his immensely generous offer, Petro promptly stood from his seat and leaped over the table to sit himself beside Sheridan.

"Yes," Petro nodded, paused, then added "Please." Hey, it didn't hurt to be polite.

Sheridan blinked, staring at Petro for a moment, that had certainly been an exuberant answer. Very well, he had made the offer, he couldn't tell him no now.

He set his own book aside, moving it to the side opposite Petro, out of the way but still within reach. Grasping the Stakespear book, Sheridan placed it between them, opening it to the first page of the selected work, Groady-o and Boo-liet.

"Alright, where would you like to start?"

Petro brought a finger to the text and pressed down on the page. Right at the very first line. "Here." Apparently he had taken Sheridan's question quite literally. "'M not sure who this guy is talking to," he frowned. Stakespear was not big in his clan. In fact, up until he got to the academy he'd never even heard of the demon. Someone hadn't told the monster horse that most of the Stakespear books on his list were plays. Not that it would do him any good in any case.

Sheridan couldn't help but smile, he could appreciate the literal interpretation of his question, being a creature of logic and science himself. He hadn't meant the question quite that literally, but there was no better place to start than the beginning. Eyes turned toward the page, Sheridan read the first line silently.

"This is the chorus, they are speaking to the audience, They're giving us a brief summary of the storyline, it's a prologue."

An interesting, if underused device.

Petro's face scrunched up in what can only be describe as supreme concentration as he digested what Sheridan had just told him. It wouldn't be surprising if the celestial dragon saw the proverbial gears in the monster horse's head turning. "Ain't choruses s'pposed to be in songs? 'S this some sorta ballad?" He asked, rubbing his chin in deep thought. "And why're they giving a summary in the beginning? Ain't that gonna spoil the whole thing?"

Petro did not think he liked the writing style of this Stakespear guy. Nor did he understand why his stuff was such a big deal that they made students read them for class. Actually, he was sure he didn't like this Stakespear guy. Period.

Sheridan shook his head, it seemed he wasn't as skilled at explaining as he had hoped.

"This is a play, as are most of Stakespear's works. The chorus does not sing, they speak."

Then again, he supposed the -could- have sun the part, it wasn't uncommon for musicians to be present onstage in such shows, there had even been a musical score written for some of his plays.

"It would only spoil the story if they said how it ended. They're setting the mood, giving the audience and idea of why the events that are about to happen will happen. Here they are telling us about the ongoing feud between the two families in the story."

Petro's face screwed up in concentration as he digested what Sheridan had just explained to him. And with much thanks to the celestial dragon's help of enlightening him, things suddenly made sense because it was a play. The look of dawning realization was short lived, unfortunately, because soon Tro was back to staring at the text and flipping through the pages. "If it was a play, ain't it easier to just watch the Jacking thing instead've reading it? Or 's this some sorta novelization-thinger?"

Looks like you're going to be here a while, Sheridan. Monster pony's going off a tangent it seems.

Ah, he had it, excellent. Now they could move on to--then again maybe not.

"I suppose it would be, unfortunately I do not know of any performances of this play that we could attend."

His tail twitched as he spoke, a hand reached out to take the book from Petro before returning it to the table, reopening it to the first scene of the script. Hmm, an interesting proposition, suddenly he found himself wondering if there were any theatres in town and if there were what they might be performing.

"It is meant to be read as a script, whether by us or by actors."

Sheridan paused, a look to Petro, a look that said he better not get any ideas. The dragon was -not- acting out the play either, don't even ask.

Gears in Petro's head. They were turning. Slowly, though, but turning nevertheless. He rubbed his chin as he thought, mulling over the fact that what he was reading like a book was actually meant to be a script. Huh, actually watching other people perform and say the lines would make it easier for him to follow (or at least understand) the language of old common. He frowned when Sheridan mentioned not knowing about any productions being held, but it didn't mean there aren't any, right?

A square-root brow quirked at the look Sheridan was giving him. "What's that look for? Y' thinking we oughta put one up ourselves?" Brown eyes widened in discomfort at the thought. Sure, Tro had performed back home, and he wasn't particularly shy about having others watch him. But, come on, this is Stakespear. Tro can barely understand what the demon wrote, let alone actually memorize things. Obviously, Tro has yet to master (or begin using) the fine art of reading between the lines.
