I have a copy of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson that I would like to read this summer. Would anyone be interested in reading this book with me? Has anyone already read it?

We could do that. I was aiming for books that dealt with environmentalism, but if people want to read books that are not about the environment that is ok. 3nodding

It could be about environmentalism/ nature.
Just a few books about nature/environmentalism:
-Pilgrim At Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard
-A River Runs Through it and Other Stories by Norman Maclean
-American Primative, Dream Work, Red Bird, and Blue Iris by Mary Oliver
Silent Spring, The Sea Around Us, The Edge of the Sea, and Under the Sea-Wind by Rachel Carson.

I wouldn't mind, actually. It has a kindle version which is great. I'm currently reading The Fabulous Riverboat. I'm happy to say I'm almost done. (It's not that good.)
How would you go about doing this? I've never done a book club before.

I would give people a week or two to get Silent Spring from the library or to buy their own copy of it. It is pretty cheap on Amazon.
After that I would probably give people two weeks to read it. After everyone has read it we can discuss it in this thread! ^_^

I'll join too if they have it at my library. I'll check in a little bit, our library has this awesome system where you can go to their website, check if they have a book and it tells you what branch it's at, where it's located, and whether or not it's checked in.

This book should be everywhere. I would like to encourage everyone who reads it to do a little history research along with it. Things have changed tremendously since this book was written. If you have the time, find some movies made in the early '60's and just note the quality of light in the outdoor shots, compared with movies today. It's distinctly different.

Things have changed since this book was published. It should be interesting to compare environmental issues from the 60's to current environmental issues. It should also be interesting to see how Rachel Carson viewed nature. She was truly an amaing woman. She was responsible to starting the "green" movement (it wasn't called the green movement in the 60's). Info on Rachel Carson: http://www.fws.gov/rachelcarson/
