The sun was setting. Samsara had arrived at the meeting place hours earlier in her impatience. At first she had paced restlessly but now she stood and watched the sun fall toward the horizon. The clouds looked like they were on fire in the red and golden blaze and the sky looked like a bloody smear. That evening, she took it as a sign. She could see little room for defeat in her plan. Three skinwalkers against one elder. He might be able to beat one of them, but not all.

Her stomach growled slightly. She was hungry, but that was good. Hunger would make her long for his blood more and a full stomach would only slow her down. Her eyes turned up to the sky once more and her mind filled with dark thoughts. This time the next day, her father would be dead.

Zulian wasn't bothering being stealthy for the moment. He rumbled through the underbrush heedless of how many branches he snapped or rocks he kicked. He liked seeing the creatures of the forest go running away from him in terror. That was good. Terror was what things should fear when seeing skinwalkers passed. It was only the animals that could think, humans and soquili, that sometimes disobeyed their instincts and stood watching instead.

He stepped out of cover at the bank of a river and followed it upstream to where Samsara had told him to meet her. It was still strange to think of her, of his temporary leader. He still couldn't be sure of whether he would eat her later. He told himself that it was probably only because her scheme was so interesting that he hadn't eaten her yet. Why eat her when he could eat an elder, after all?

And there she was, looking at the sky. He walked up to her and rumbled a growling greeting.

Felise had almost forgotten about the meeting, mostly because the cause didn't grip her interest deeply. Either way though she had agreed to help and so she had made her way to the meeting place. Sitting on a branch in her smaller cat form she had actually watched the arrival of the other 2 skinwalkers, though at the time she had not long woken from a nap. Watching them had amused her a little and taught her a few things about them. Most notable was that they had not even noticed her as they arrived.

After watching them for a while she dropped lightly from the tree and walked over, changing size as she approached the pair, her tail flicking sending flashes of light around her. The gold ring on her tail glinted, though it could be used as a weapon, the right angle and it could easily dazzle and blind for a time, those were the time to get some good attacks in. Stopping and looking at the mare quietly, her large claws digging into the dirt a little as she settled, feeling a little smug that she could do this and that they lacked paws. She saw no point in the cursed skinwalkers, but she supposed they had a purpose, she had just failed to see it yet.

Hayagriva was indeed out that evening but not alone. He walked with Phala and his mother, her familiar beside her. He wasn't exceptionally pleased to have company, or that company in particular. It wasn't that he had anything against the two soquili, he just didn't enjoy trying to serve as a mediator between Bari and her estranged children. Protectors were meant to guard the herd from danger. He felt that it was more along the lines of an alpha's job to oversee this sort of thing.

They were getting close to sunset now. Before too long they'd have to head back. Somehow Haya doubted that Bari would do too well out in the wilderness in the black. For now he was walking silently, a few paces ahead of Bari and her son.

Parnasabari tried to focus on the surroundings. They were in a lovely area. It was late spring now and the trees were almost fully leaved. Some even had flowers decorating their branches. She liked thinking about nature. She was far more comfortable with that than with her son. She had managed to keep nervous reactions to a minimum but still it was obvious she was uneasy. She didn't like his big teeth. They looked more like a kalona's teeth than anything.

"Look at that bird up there," she said slightly inanely. "Do you think it has a nest?" She often reverted to this sort of pointless conversing when she didn't want to think of what else to say.

He wasn't sure why he had gone along for a walk with his mother. He knew well enough now that he terrified her. It was understandable, he was a monster after all. A dark and twisted reflection of his mother. If he so much as twitched towards her she would probably flinch away from him. That was just the way things were between them. So why had he come out? Some delusional part of him still wanted to believe that maybe she would find room in her heart for him.

He glanced towards the leafy branch that his mother's eyes were locked on careful not to stray from his path. Then very carefully he turned away to keep his mouth out of sight before answering, "Probably...or else it's building one..." Phala disliked how stiff and cold his voice always sounded in moments like these. He bit back a sigh, not wanting to show his unease, before directing his attention to the golden stallion to the front. "Where are we going?" He asked trying not to sound too rude. He just wasn't sure he liked how things were turning out, as usual.

Patrolling. That's what Revyra was doing. Patrolling. Or at least that was what she continued to tell herself she was doing. It was just like the days in her past where should would go out and monitor everything. Only then she was with a group and now she was rather painfully alone. She was yet to find anyone who proved themselves to be an equal to her. Day after day it was ditsy girls, boys completely full of themselves or any other number of annoying things.

Her wings rustled against the saddle she wore as she walked. She hadn't met a human that was worth her time either. If there ever came a time that she did that saddle would be filled.

She frowned slightly. Fat chance of that ever happening. The people and creatures here seemed rather air-headed and over all were complete push overs. Nothing ever really happened. There really was no point to her patrolling. There was no one to help, nothing to warn others about and really nothing to do but walk to alleviate some of her boredom. Perhaps it was time for her to move on.

The moment had come. It was time for them to leave. There was little point in lingering around chatting when they had a hunt to do. Samsara had already scouted out the area some and found what she believed to be the paths most commonly taken by her father. His scent was thick in those areas and they would be the best places to lie in wait.

"We are all here. Let us go." She gave the command and then started prowling down the side of the river. She walked in the direction of the setting sun, letting that bloody splotch on the sky guide her.

Zulian gave the purewalker a slightly challenging look before following Samsara. He didn't like her and didn't trust her. He had never spent much time around purewalkers and didn't understand them. They were supposed to be stronger than regular skinwalkers but he wasn't convinced. He wasn't about to let her attack Samsara while her back was turned, though. Samsara was the current leader. She should be obeyed... for now.

He didn't say anything but followed on. He kept both ears trained behind him at the purewalker. If she sounded like she was preparing to pounce he could spin around and meet her face to face.

Following after the pair of them, not even bothering with thoughts of trust, it wasn't in any of their natures. Though she didn't much care if they trusted her, she was only trusting them enough to think they wouldn't attack her without provocation, and while she felt secure in her superiority above them, (she was a purewalker after all) she was not inclined to fight a battle on all fronts. She was here, she had turned up as agreed, if they wanted to make more of it then she would have to show them why a purewalker was better than a cursed.

She didn't doubt that the mare would stand by the agreement, at least till the attack was done, the male however seemed more edgy, she would have to watch him. Rolling her eyes as they walk, getting her mind off of her companions and more towards the elder... This would be an interesting time, and unless the mare was totally wrong it was like as to be pretty simple with 3 of them and only one of him. Though common sense made her doubt it would be so simple.

This thought had her wondering about the unexpected, things could go badly if they were outnumbered...

Things were not going well. Haya wasn't surprised and would have predicted that things wouldn't go well if anyone had asked him his opinion prior to this trip. Bari and Phala both didn't want to be there and that made him the third reluctant participant on this trip. He looked back at the two of them, hiding his frustration. "We're just going to stop at the river ahead to get a drink and then head back. How about that?"

He had hoped to get a little further but it wasn't to be helped at this point. The best thing to do now was to get back to the herd again before the two of them really started getting edgy. "It's just a little further this way," he said while leading them forward. He could already hear the faint burble of water ahead of them. They were close.

"I like rivers," said Bari. The statement was seemingly another one of her random statements but her smile along with it was genuine. "Have Vara and Scythe told you about their story about a river?" she asked Phala. It was such a romantic story. She loved hearing about the way they had been when they were younger. "So Scythe can fly a little, right? He takes Vara there and he gets her to jump off the side of a cliff into the water to feel what flying feels like."

Her excitement ebbed somewhat and she looked a little disheartened. "It sounds so much better when they tell the story." For the moment, some of her old self was shining through.
PostPosted: Thu May 12, 2011 6:14 pm

"Sounds good to me." Phala said feeling rather relieved. This painfully awkward trip would be over soon enough. After he could go back to his rock cluster and hide under his "borrowed" bear pelt.

He glanced at his mother as she began to speak. She seemed to be addressing him more or less directly for once. Slowly he gave his head a shake, "You haven't." She didn't really tell him many stories actually. He listened to her carefully doing what he could to imagine the situation. All that was really coming to his mind, though, was how stupid of an idea it really was. Jumping off the side of a cliff into a river was dangerous, what if his great-grandmother had missed the water?

Well he imagined he wouldn't be around now would he. Truly a depressing thought that lead to him sighing at what he quickly determined was a bad time. "Um...you...tell it fine..." He mumbled looking away again. It would have been smarter to never have gone on this trip.

They didn't have to go far. The familiar smell drifting on the wind brought Samsara a host of memories. It was her father, the one soquili in the world that she had the most ties to. She could remember how much she had once loved him even if she couldn't recall what love felt like. Now there was nothing but hatred where all those complexities of emotions had once stood.

"He's there," she muttered with her eyes fixed on a point ahead of them. With her head low, she started a more urgent pace to where her father must be. She moved as quickly as she could while maintaining a high level of quietness. Soon, the wheels of fate would turn.

Zulian slipped off to one side and followed after Samsara. He was full of excitement and anticipation for the fight to come. He had never even seen an elder before but now he would be able to kill one. As the drew closer he became aware of sounds and other mingling smells. He could hear voices. There was more than one. This pleased him. It wouldn't have been fun if it had been too easy. As far as he was concerned, the more there were to kill the more entertaining it would be.

Felise's ears pricked at the mares words, shifting to her cat form she paid only enough attention to them as to keep track of where they were going and what they were doing. Launching herself effortlessly into the trees, sheltered by the canopy, though they could easily smell her just off to the side. She liked having the high ground as much as she could in a fight. Bounding along the branches quietly she was a shadow among many shadows in the dappled light.

Slowing down when she catches the scent of the others clearly. There was more than one if her nose was to be believed. Looking down at the other pair questioningly not having been lead to expect more than one.

It was painfully awkward even listening to them. Haya was a determined soquili but realized that at some point you had to draw the line. Forcing that family to spend time together wasn't improving things. It was probably too late for that as soon as the foals had reached adulthood. By then they were jaded enough to have their own opinions that weren't going to be swayed easily. It was possible for the family to all be mutually happy, just not together.

Through the gaps in the trees he saw the rippled surface of water. "We're here," he said with relief. "Let's all get a little water and-" He trailed off while inhaling deeply. The wind had changed direction and brought with it the scent of another soquili. Maybe one of the family was already there. The smell was certainly familiar, and-

His eyes widened as he recognized it. "Skinwalker!" He shouted and bounded in front of Phala and Bari protectively.

Bari was still reflecting on the story of Vara and Scythe. Thinking about them set a content glow about her but that glow was shattered. Skinwalker. She had never seen a skinwalker before, only heard the horror stories from those of their sister herd who were attacked. Instead of a skinwalker, her dazed mind envisioned Hisoka instead. He wore a pelt and inspired the same bolt of danger for her. Had Hisoka somehow found her?

Even those thoughts stilled to silence when she caught sight of the eyes approaching out of the forest. One set of eyes glowed blue. The other set were golden yellow but the way they caught the light was unlike any soquili she had ever seen. Frozen, she stared in mute horror at the approaching monsters.
PostPosted: Tue May 17, 2011 8:05 am

A wave of relief washed over him at the sight of the water. It didn't last long. At Hayagriva's cry his entire body went tense. He had never seen a skinwalker before. He'd heard a great deal about them though and that was enough to put him on full alert. His heart beat frantically in his chest as he took in the scents on the air and looked around anxiously for some sign of them.

When he saw them, he didn't see much of them. What he could see didn't seem any more frightening than a normal soquili. Only the knowledge of what they could do was scary. Unless of course you were his mother, he glanced towards her. This was looking like it could get very bad, she wouldn't be any help at all. So he'd have to do the fighting for her. Without a doubt Hayagriva would be fine. Phala would be too, he was a monster after all. Monsters were good at fighting by nature.

With that thought in his mind he lowered his head, narrowed his eyes and bared his teeth. If his over sized fangs were good for one thing, it was intimidation. He only hoped it worked against skinwalkers as well as it did on other soquili.

They had been spotted. Samsara had expected they would be, what with the noise that Zulian was making. Time slowed as she picked up her pace. Her eyes met those of her father. She stared into them and that familiar roaring empty rage filled her. The angry animal within her was taking control now and it wanted blood and death.

"Don't stop to talk!" she snarled to the others. "Kill them!" She oriented her wings horizontally to the ground. She wasn't flying but she had enough lift to hasten her pace even further. She would leave her father to the other skinwalkers for now. She knew she didn't have the ability to lead the attack on him. She would seek out weaker prey... like the shivering mare that stared at them in horror. With a feline yowl, she arced around one side of the group and aimed herself at the green-maned mare. Parnasabari, her mind whispered to her. She knew this mare from her time in the herd... and she was determined to kill her.

Zulian joined his voice to Samsara's yowl and abandoned all pretenses of stealth. There was only one target that he was interested in and he thundered at the elder with the force of an avalanche. He could sense the power and wisdom emanating from that golden figure and wanted nothing more than to tear it all to pieces.
PostPosted: Sat May 21, 2011 12:59 pm

Watching from her hidden vantage as the other two attacked, they had chosen their targets, which left her with the younger stallion. Her blue eyes glinting as she looked him over, a preditory smile on her face, seems momma and son were out together, it would be so touching for them to witness each other's demise. Bounding lightly along the branches to gain speed, her small cat form doing so with little to no noise, besides the trio were distracted by her companions.

Launching herself off of a branch at the young stallion, she was going to take him down and her cat form was to small to do that. Letting out a roar as she flew at him, her large pureblood paws angled at him, claws extended. Waiting and waiting, shifting to her large form moments before she should hit him, using her sudden increase in size and weight to her advantage.

There was only a moment for Haya to decide what to do. Samsara was making quickly for Bari and the huge stallion was heading straight for him. Possibilities flashed through his mind before he made his choice. He surged forward at the tiger stallion. He didn't see the purewalker mare dropping down from the trees at Phala and had no way of knowing he would soon be tangled up in that combat. His hope was that Phala could help protect his mother from Samsara while he dealt with the more urgent threat.

He ran at the skinwalker with his head lowered and his tail poised to lash out and strike. He briefly noticed the armor that the stallion wore. He would have to do his best to strike around that and not get bludgeoned by it. Those were the last considerations he was able to make before the two of them crashed together in a whirl of snapping jaws and lashing tails.

Bari was still frozen in place. Her mind couldn't grasp what was happening. She knew Samsara. She had talked with her once in a while and had been in the same herd as her for years. She couldn't grasp that Sam would really hurt her. Even seeing Samsara's mouth full of sharp teeth didn't convince Bari's shocked mind that things had changed. She couldn't even run. She just stared at Samsara with her eyes wide and showing white.

User Image

Sukha was not shocked to stillness as her friend Bari was. Foxes had their own stories about skinwalkers, about how sometimes a member of a family might go missing and show up later as a pelt on a skinwalker's back. Skinwalkers were the wearers of corpses and Sukha was filled with horror while wondering what poor souls had been torn apart to make these ones.

"Run! Run!" she gasped at Bari, knowing the danger that they were in. Bari didn't move and Sukha in frantic haste nipped at her ankle, but still the mare stood still. The smaller skinwalker was running at them and every hair on Sukha's back raised at the sight and smell of her.

Bari wasn't going to move. In a movement as fast as rainfall, Sukha leaped ahead of her dear friend and snarled at the approaching monster. "You stay away from her!" she yelled, as fiercely as if she had been protecting her own cubs.
