 Merlin carried the lunch box and a rolled blanket down to the stable, along with a pair of canteens with chilled water in them draped over his shoulder. Laying the stuff down in the doorway, he went down the stalls and took out four horses: Arthur's golden bay stallion Valentine, the gentle dark bay -- almost black -- gelding with the big star that Arthur had given him and he'd named Magnus, Morgana's stunning dapple grey mare with the thick wavy mane and tail, and Lady Katherine's preferred mount. Summoning a couple of stable boys to tack up the Ladies' horses, Merlin proceeded to saddle Valentine.

Evelyn entered the stables, carrying a bucket of water for the horses. Pouring it into the drinking barrel, she nodded to herself and walked to the corner. "Hello Merlin!" She said, noticing him. "I promised the Lady Morgana that I'd get her horse readied for her." She smiled, getting the saddle, girth, and the head piece for the horse. Putting the saddle on the Lady Morgana's dapple gray horse, she bent down to tighten the girth.

"Hi, Evelyn!" Merlin smiled back, as he tightened the girth on Valentine's saddle. The stallion blew gently through his nostrils. "How are you doing today?"

Evelyn smiled. "I'm fine. How are you?" She attached the reins and head piece, holding the horse by it's reins now.

"Oh, you know me," Merlin grinned, having finished Arthur's horse and turning to his own. "Over worked and under paid. The usual!" Magnus nickered, as if in agreement, as Merlin worked the bit past his teeth.

Evelyn laughed softly, smiling. "The usual." She repeated, loosening her grip on the horse. "Are you riding along with them?" She asked.

"Yup," Merlin confirmed, a big teasing grin on his face. "Someone has to lay out the food, pour the water, shoo the flies, suffer the abuse, then pack it all up when they've lounged their fill." Besides, these days Arthur rarely went anywhere without Merlin, and the wizard-in-hiding preferred it that way. Much easier to keep an eye on his charge. "What about you?" he asked Evelyn.

Evelyn shrugged. "Only is they want me too. But I believe that they already have their hands full with you." She teased.

Merlin laughed. "I do my best," he said. "Wouldn't want them to get too full of themselves." He gave Magnus' girth a final tug, then began to pack the picnic into his saddlebags.

Merlin made a face like a fish gasping in air, his eyes bugging slightly as he fumbled the saddlebags and nearly dropped them. "Oh! Oh, Morgana!" he grinned self-consciously. "Th-the horses -- too much grain and they get... you know... too full of themselves." He shot Evelyn a "back me up?" look.

Evelyn covered her mouth with her hand, laughing softly. "Your horse is ready Lady Morgana." She said, leading the horse to Morgana. "Merlin and I were just talking about some very emotional feelings, where our feelings get full of themselves." She nodded, as if explaining it to herself.

 As Arthur walked Lady Katherine down to the royal stables, he could see Lady Morgana there watching Merlin and Evelyn tacking up the horses.

Morgana smiled, "Thank you, Evelyn, you are most kind." She took the reins and led the horse to the door, raising her eyebrows as she passed Merlin.
