It had been two weeks since Penny visited Kam in the hospital.

The sling she was forced to wear had proven to be a serious burden. She couldn't multitask as well. She couldn't hold a cigarette and coffee in one hand and a clipboard in the other, which caused a real strain on her efficiency at work. After ten days, her shoulder seemed to have healed entirely. She called Kam to share the good news, shouting into the phone, "Advanced healing is ******** AMAZING, Kambojojojojo!" To celebrate, Penny decide that the two of them should suit up and go hunting for the asshat Captain who put them in that situation in the first place.

After catching a subway over to Kam's neck of the woods, Penny slipped into an alleyway and popped out as Cimmerian. She had made the mistake of transforming with her cigarettes in her pocket enough times to learn to set the box on the ground first. Otherwise, it would magically disappear to the same place that her clothes ran off too. With the box of cigarettes tucked firmly in her cleavage, Meri popped a lit one in her mouth and leaned up against a brick wall, exhaling fat smoky rings into the air.

It was pretty much her favorite thing to do when she was waiting on someone.

Kam had agreed with his over zealous partner - advanced healing was pretty ******** awesome. Although he'd been speared through the shoulder a mere two weeks ago, he'd been released from the hospital earlier than anyone expected and had been back at the gym faster than it seemed possible. Sure, he had probably pushed himself a little too hard even with the healing his knighthood provided, but he was back to 100% in no time.

So, when Penny called, he was more than happy to oblige her.

"I can find you just by the smoke trail," he came around the corner of the building she was standing in, still Kam in his hoodie and jeans. It took all of a few seconds for him to power up and lean against the wall beside her. Despite the quickness that his healing had afforded him, there was still a faint semi-circle scar on his shoulder, just noticeable as a patch of slightly paler skin that interrupted the flow of his tattoos. He would have been more upset by it if it wasn't a war wound he could point to proudly. How many other guys could say they'd been speared through?

"Any idea where we should start looking for her sorry a**?" Ghen wasn't the planner out of the pair. He went where Meri told him to go and did (mostly) what she told him to do. She was just better at the organizational crap and he was perfectly happy letting her lead the way since she usually knew what she was doing.

Cimmerian straightened up, flicking ash on to the pavement. "Just call me Princess Tigerlily," she said, putting one hand on her hip. "I'm pretty sure that makes you Peter Pan." When Ghen asked for direction, Meri nodded sharply and tossed her cigarette to the ground, stomping it out with the heel of her boot. She clapped both hands together. "Feeling out the weird blips in my brain is still new to me, but I tried practicing a little yesterday." She adjusted her bow around her middle and began walking off down the street, expecting Gehenna to follow.

It didn't stop her from talking. "If we just walk a circuit around the city and try to focus, we should be able to feel when bad guys are around. Once we do, we'll sniff it out, run all over that area -- and hey, even if we don't find her, we'll find someone we can beat the s**t out of, maybe even get some information out of it too." The street they were on was pretty urban. The park was several blocks away, and the hiss of steam pipes and honk of horns provided the background noise.

The two Pages approached the mouth to the subway. "The city is pretty huge so it might take a -- oh, hey, what's that?" She stopped suddenly, slamming a hand to his chest. Closing her eyes, Cimmerian could feel the tingle of some dark and stormy in her head. "Wait, do you feel it too?" Her eyes slowly opened. It felt far away, distant, like it was under a blanket. Meri stared down at the subway stairs leading down beside them.

Or maybe the Nega was just underground.

Ghen's mouth pressed into a thin line when she called him Peter Pan - he was not some little fairy boy that wore tights. Well, okay, he was kind of wearing tights, but he still wasn't a little fairy boy!

"When did you possibly find time to practice at all?" Ghen had fallen in beside Meri, despite the fact that he found that idea completely unbelievable. The only downtime he ever saw her take was when she was playing super hero with him. Even when she went to the bar, she took her work notes and looked over them until she was too drunk to focus. Ghen was being productive if he got a shower before work and a chance to change clothes before he went out - those were his great, daily accomplishments.

"I hope we find that smug little psycho," he emphasized this by punching one fist into the palm of his other hand and staring out at the street like she might materialize any second. He might have knocked her out, but he still felt cheated. She was going to pay for stabbing him like that. "But I guess I wouldn't mind running into another one of those ********. I don't want them thinking we're just some push overs." No, that wouldn't do at all. Ghen would make sure that the next time they found one of those punks that they beat them so hard they couldn't sit down for a week.

When Cimmerian stopped and thrust her hand out, Ghen stopped as well. He'd been so lost in his own violent thoughts that he hadn't really been paying attention to that vague aura-radar that he could barely figure out. No, he'd been leaving that entirely to Meri. He did, however, tilt his head sideways and scrunch his features up when she asked him if he felt it. "Kinda, sort of. Maybe." There was definitely some kind of something poking at his brain, but he wasn't as quick as Meri to pick up this kind of crap.

He did, however, notice when she looked at the stairs. A grin split his face and he darted for them, taking them two at a time and calling back a quick, "hurry up!"

"I am a ******** wizard, Petey," she said, clapping Ghen on the shoulder. "I make time." The truth was that Penny had begun cutting her daily kickboxing sessions back to every other day and had begun practicing archery in between. The moment she became a Page, the girl had done everything she could to fit it into her life with as little disruption as possible. So far, barring that unpleasant incident with the spear-wielding Nega, it had gone okay.

Okay just wasn't good enough for her.

Switching back to the task at hand, Cimmerian narrowed her eyes, gazing down to where the stairs led. Her mouth opened to tell Ghen they needed to go down there, but he was already running ahead of her. She took off after him, dodging around a few civilians as they scattered out of the station. One older woman gasped and gripped the hand of an older man tightly. "It's one of them," she stammered, hand shaking. Meri just kept running.

A subway car had just left the station. Meri jogged up to the doors as they closed and slammed a fist against it. "Damnit," she said, kicking the side of it for good measure. "The Nega might've been on that, ********." The only person left on the train platform besides Ghen was a homeless man draped in a blanket. If Meri had been looking closely, she might have noticed that, despite the molding blanket, the feet poking out from under it wore shiny, patent leather boots with gleaming metal spurs.

If Meri had overlooked the homeless man with amazing fashion sense in boots, Ghen definitely had. Subtle details usually flew right over his head and with adrenaline pumping through his veins at the promise of a good fight, Ghen probably would have missed the whole ******** subway car if Meri hadn't pointed it out to him.. with her fist. He let out a growl of irritation as she told him the Nega had probably hopped the first train out of reach of his fists and chose to imitate her punch of irritation by laying one into the rough wall of the subway. He would never admit it, but it actually ******** hurt. As tough as Gehenna was, he didn't think that a solid concrete wall might be harder than even his extra tough, reinforced fist.

It was, though.

While he was rubbing the back of his knuckles with his other hand and trying to pretend like they didn't really ******** hurt, he meandered his way towards the hobo that was still in the station. Ghen had to assume that he was probably drunk if he hadn't run out at the sight of the Nega and the pair of them charging in, but that wasn't news - a lot of hobos seemed to drink more booze than they ate food. As soon as he was within talking distance, he opened his mouth to ask the guy if he'd seen the man in the uniform run past.

Then he dropped the blanket and started for the stairs in the same instant.

Ghen only had to blink once before he realized it was the Nega they had been tracking. Why hadn't he realized the ominous dark cloud feeling was still in the huge room even after the subway car had left? Oh right, because he was Gehenna. Regardless, he took off after the guy in the clinking boots and managed to drag him back down the first few steps of the stairs, letting him tumble to the floor before the lieutenant simply jumped back onto his feet. He looked like he might try to charge Ghen, who was still standing on the stairs, then turned and bolted for the other set of stairs leading in from the second street entrance.

"Meri, block off the other exit!" He jumped down the few stairs between him and the floor, but even he knew that the punk would be faster than he was this time.

Even without advanced Page speed, Cimmerian was fast. She had always been physically fit, and it helped give her an edge when it came to beating the fleeing Nega to the other exiting stairwell. She beat the Nega there without a problem, throwing her arms out on either side. Her bow was still around her middle, and if he wanted a fight, Meri was ready to take all her rage out on him.

The lanky boy looked panicked. He threw a punch at Meri, but she dodged it, swirling one leg around to fan kick him in the shoulder. The Nega had a foot of height on her, but he was slow to react. Meri dropped low and swept one leg out, knocking him on to his back.

Standing up, she crossed to deliver a kick, but he grabbed her by the ankle and threw her four feet backwards into the wall of the subway station. Her head met the wall with a crack and spots of color flared in her vision. "********," she said, stumbling forward. The lieutenant was trying to make a break for it so Cimmerian threw herself blindly forward.

Arms wrapped around his neck and legs clamped his torso. The Nega struggled to move, landing a good punch into the side of Meri's head in the process. She remained tenacious, gripping on to him like her life depended on it.

Gehenna didn't stop running after them even when Meri successfully barred his way. He wasn't the fastest guy in the world, though, considering his bulk - even if he could outrun any normal guy with his boosted Page speed, others with the same advantage were usually much quicker on their feet than Ghen himself.

When the Negaverser threw Meri into a wall, his teeth grit and he surged forward, crossing the few spaces left just in time to see his partner tackle him to the ground. He wasn't going to try and keep Cimmerian from taking blows, but son of a b***h if it didn't piss him off to see it.

"I've ******** got him, Meri." As soon as he was near to them, he doubled over and pinned his knee down on the other's legs, then put his whole weight onto it. He reached out and around Meri with his hands and grabbed the arms of the lanky little punk. He pushed them down hard against the ground then, pinning him where he was laying. The guy was on a level with Gehenna in power, but he didn't have the natural advantage that Ghen did.

The kid struggled hard against him, but Ghen just shoved him even more roughly into the floor - banging his head against in the process, probably on purpose. If Meri had a headache, Gehenna would make sure he sympathized.

"Looks like we have a little rat."

The three of them stayed like that -- a little totem pole on the floor -- for a solid two minutes while the lieutenant struggled to break free. The boy was panting, but whatever weapon he had had been knocked away. Gehenna felt like a stone wall on top of her, and even if Meri wouldn't admit it, she was finding it difficult to breathe. Breath shuddered in and out of her.

The ground began to shake. Another train was approaching. When it came, it shot a gust of filthy air at the trio of powered beings. The first person off was a tall man in an overcoat. He took one look at Ghen on top of Meri and the Nega and began shouting, "Hey, somebody help! This guy is robbing someone!" Five civilians descended on them, tugging at Ghen and Meri.

They weren't quite strong enough to pull them free, but they caused enough of a distraction for the Nega to slip away. Meri gasped for breath, slapping at the hands that attempted to help her. "Ghen, he's getting away!" she shouted, staggering to her feet. Cimmerian planted an elbow in the gut of a man who tried to stop her.

Twirling around the crowd, Meri chased the Nega onto the subway car just as the doors started to close.

When the first man was off the train and Gehenna happened to catch his eye, he knew what was coming. Even if he wasn't pinning some punk to the floor, he just naturally looked suspicious. In most situations he could use it to his advantage when he wanted to, but this one? No, this was going to be one of the ones where he wished he was a white kid instead.

In the dust and surging crowd, he somehow managed to lose both the Negaverser and his partner. His only hint was Meri shouting somewhere to the left of him and a man groaning immediately beyond that. Ghen pushed himself to his feet, no thanks to the crowd that thought they were going to teach him a lesson. Once he was actually on his feet, the crowd began to shift uneasily as some of the more cowardly people got out of his way - he was a pretty imposing figure when he wasn't bent double over Meri and a lieutenant.

The crowd thinned just enough that Ghen caught a glimpse of Meri running for the subway car and, without a second thought, he began to shove his way through the crowd battering ram style. It didn't take him long to make a path and he managed to leap onto a subway car just in time for the doors to slam shut behind him. Then he realized that neither Cimmerian or the lieutenant were on the car at all - it was half full of a bunch of wide-eyed civilians, but that was all.

He rushed down the isle just in time to see the lieutenant about to make his escape toward the car that Gehenna was on. He caught Ghen's eyes when they stood face-to-face in front of the doors leading to different cars. As Gehenna reached for the handle and wrenched it open, the Nega turned around and decided to try his luck with Meri instead.

Meri watched the lieutenant come to stop, spotting Ghen through the scuffed window. There wasn't much time. The next stop was thirty seconds away, and once those doors opened, this Nega could be out on the street and out of their range in no time. The slant of his shoulders began to turn. Meri gripped each hand on a pole on either side of her and forced her legs up into the air, dropkicking the Nega in the face.

A spurt of blood shot upward. It hit the ceiling at dripped back down. The Nega stumbled backward into the door. He nose was shattered. Meri hit the ground in a kneeling position and then sprang back up. "You picked the wrong Page to tango with, a*****e!" she shouted, juking left when he did and then juking back right. Cimmerian might have been tiny, but she was fast.

The Nega lashed out, punching Meri across the face. She recovered quickly and slammed her hand into his throat, forcing him back against the wall. He drew a knee up into her gut and winded her. Meri stumbled for a moment, but refused to let go of her hold. "TELL ME THE NAME OF THE NEGA CAPTAIN WITH THE SPEAR. THE GIRL. SHORT HAIR. GREEN EYES. TELL ME." She didn't realize she was screaming until the words left her mouth.

The train slowed to a stop and the doors burst open. Civilians ran screaming off of the car, racing up the stairs to call the police. The Nega used the distraction to crack Meri in the jaw with his elbow, breaking free of her and sprinting off of the subway car and out onto the platform.

Ghen watched the struggle through the glass panes that separated his car from their own. He was fighting with the door handle as he watched the brawl unfold, unable to wrench it open in his anger. When the subway cars finally came to a grinding halt, Ghen beat one fist into the unyielding glass and ran for the opening doors. Civilians grumbled and shied away - even if they weren't near the fight, they could see it.

"I don't ******** think so," Gehenna grumbled under his breath as he darted quickly after the figure. Like some kind of pro football player, he dove out and caught the man by his waist. He pinned him with his own body weight as the lieutenant shifted and then grabbed him by the back of the neck to hold him in place.

"What's her ******** name, punk?" His dark fingers dug into the lieutenant's neck and the force of his hold was grinding the pale, lanky kid's face into the unforgiving cement of the subway platform. The lieutenant struggled and almost threw Ghen off, but he only returned the gesture by slamming his face down once into the already bloody cement. He had a variety of bruises and scraps at this point, plus a nose that was now a fountain of blood.

Despite it all, the lieutenant managed to roll his eyes back as far as he could and say, with all the defiance in the world, "******** you".

Of course, Ghen just responded by bringing back one fist and slamming it painfully into the subdued Negaverser's side. He was pretty sure he'd felt the ribs splintering beneath his reinforced knuckles. "Let's try that again, ********." He leaned down over the half broken lieutenant and put his head closer to the teenager's.

"What's her ******** name?"

Her head was spinning, vision blurred and jaw aching. Getting the s**t kicked out of her was not part of Meri's daily regiment, and she wasn't really too happy to add it in. The lieutenant got away from her before Cimmerian could even throw a return blow. She swore loudly, jogging off the subway car after the Nega. Mint eyes blinked to clear themselves. If she was going to catch this a*****e, then she needed to be able to see.

When her eyes finally cleared, Cimmerian saw Gehenna flying across the ground in front of her to slam the Negaverse agent in a full-body tackle. In a fit, she pulled her bow free and launched an arrow at the Nega. It hit the boy in the back of the head and then plopped to the ground beside him, narrowly missing Ghen. In spite of the gory scene, the petite girl came running up. She swung a foot hard into the side of the boy's head and then took a step back, shocked at her own rage.

"PAIN!" he shouted.

Meri snorted. "Yeah, I know it's painful," she said, stomach churning at the sight of blood pooling on the ground.

The lieutenant lifted his head just barely and said, "I said, 'PAINITE!'" A whine rolled out of his chest. "Captain Painite carries a spear. I told you what you wanted to know. Get off me!" Cimmerian had no idea how old the Nega was, but he sounded like a kid.

Mint eyes went to Ghen. She felt conflicted. "Okay, Ghen, let him up," she said. He told her what she needed to know. Meri stuck to her word most days, and this wasn't the one who stabbed her. She was too inexperienced to realize that even a baby rattlesnake held the potential for danger. She hadn't learn to fear Negas in general -- just Painite.

Behind them, the train rumbled out of the station.
PostPosted: Wed May 11, 2011 8:10 pm

Lucky for the both of them, Ghen had a stronger stomach than Meri did. He could have held the kid down and let him swim in the pool of his own blood until he passed out. He probably wouldn't have even felt bad about it. Meri got what Meri asked for, it seemed, and with a little frown he gave the punk one last shove and then stood up, towering over him where he still lay crumpled in on himself.

"Painite? What kind of stupid name is that?" He was starting to turn his back to the lanky little kid, ready to waltz up the stairs and out of the subway like nothing had happened. It'd been a productive night, maybe he could convince Meri to call it off early and head back to sm-

Ghen stopped dead as something small but hard nailed him in the back of his head. He whipped back around just in time to see the kid swinging a yo yo and before he could jump out of the way, the kid flicked it and struck him hard across the side of his jaw. The back of his head had been shielded by the layers of thick dreads, but his jaw was left open and Ghen's head jerked backwards from the blow. It wasn't a break, but it was going to bruise like a b***h.

He doubled over and put a hand to his face immediately, fighting between gritting his teeth and keeping his jaw lax. He had no attention for the kid that was grinning through bloody teeth and winding up for another swing.

Cimmerian wasn't sure what she had been expecting. Her mouth got her into trouble before, but after the blows were switched, everybody got to walk away. The Nega had told them what they wanted to know. So Meri was going to let him go. And why not? They asked him a question. He answered. That was that. If this was Captain Painite herself, then maybe it would be a different result, but Meri simply was not a person filled with hate.

When the Nega turned and struck Gehenna, a snarl ripped across her lips. Meri lunged forward, swinging her bow like a battle axe. It shattered over the Nega's head, and he dropped his yo-yo, staggering backward. The ground began to rattle with the approach of a subway car. The disoriented Nega stepped across the yellow safety line. His heel caught on uneven payment, and he began to fall backward toward the tracks.

"Wait!" Meri shouted. Her muscles tensed and she leaped forward, reaching fingertips out toward the flailing hand of the Nega as he reached out for her. She felt the brush of his fingernail against her hand. The light from the subway car flared in her eyes. Cimmerian was leaning halfway out over the tracks, grasping blindly for the tumbling lieutenant.
