The beach. A long stretch of warm golden sands and crystal blue ocean water. This is but a small piece of paradise on an island that is always looming with danger. Here the students can relax and kick back in the sun. Shops also line against the forrest behind to provide students with surfing boards, flotation devices, drinks, and even watermelon. There are also volleyball nets for those who want to get a good game going.

There is a bit of danger though. A tall and rocky cliff named the Hirakiri leans over the side of the beach, with ridged rocks and shark infested waters below that invite any who are brave (or stupid) enough to jump off.

Yuri paused as he viewed the beach in the moonlight, it was a beautiful night and the perfect time to train in his mind. As he walked along the beach and away from the shops he heard the gentle flow of the tide and allowed himself to unwind bit by bit. The first thing that had been in the book about the staff was spinning it to block projectiles so in his mind the obvious first thing to do would be to teach himself to spin it. He had some experience with spinning devil sticks and escrima sticks but not actual staffs.

Staff Spin 1/5

With a slight nod Yuri began to slowly move the staff between his long fingers nimbly slipping them along the edges as he worked to twirl the staff. It had been a nice trick that he had learned from a cheerleader when he started attending school and was among the many lessons he remembered fondly. He could still remember her red hair like living flame in the sun as he had sat and chatted with her. She had emphasized back then that the most important trick to spinning was rotating the wrist as it reached the little finger and flipping it back to the start.

2/5

With that in mind he spun the staff with more confidence than he would have without the memory but found the increased thickness made it difficult over all. With a slight frown he slowly rotated his right hand while balancing the staff on his thumb underneath his fingers before twisting his hand so that the staff swung downward on one side and up on the other. As it shifted in this way he twisted his hand back with his thumb angled down to flip it one more time completing the rotation. Somehow this felt wrong as well.

3/5

Biting his lip lightly in thought he smiled suddenly as he remembered that in the old movies he used to watch and when Rachel had done forms spinning often involved both hands. With a slight shift of his left arm he gripped the staff holding it with his left palm facing up and his right palm facing downwards. When he was ready he rotated the staff in his left hand and as the rotation of his wrist neared it's limit transferred the staff to his right hand to continue the rotation before quickly switching back to his left hand again.

4/5

With a sudden smile he began spinning the staff faster and faster gradually getting the timing and technique down as he heard the air it displace make a whirring sound similar to a low erratic hum. With a grin he slowed the spinning of the staff and smiled as he visualized having knives thrown at him and with a fast series of rotations and trade offs he spun the staff and blocked them in his minds eye though he did notice the limitations of the technique. There were some points that could not be covered so easily but he was happy with his progress none the less.

Gradually Yuri decided to move through a series of forms he remembered from his childhood. He knew they were Chinese in origin but didn't care as for the moment he was simply enjoying something from the past. He had been drilled again and again that for the staff form was crucial to bringing out it's true power. It was not simply enough to jab one end at the opponent but instead you had to learn to channel the movements of your body through it so that one end thrust with force.

Pole Thrust 1/5

As he considered the forms he consulted the book he had borrowed before removing his shirt and placing it on top of it as he took up the staff once more and stood with his hands near the third markers as he spun it briefly before settling down and focusing. The first thing he did was bring his right hand towards his chest and watched as the left side swung downwards in a little arc before he shifted his body to the right and redirecting the force of the small circle on the left slid the staff along his open right hand and thrust lightly with it.

2/5

With a nod at the basics he slowly began speeding up, it was fine to make a motion at a fraction of the true speed used in a fight but if he was unable to work his way up into doing it at full speed then it would never be more than a decent party trick. Though the types of parties he would need to throw for such a trick were the stuff of rumors and the internet in his mind. With a shrug he centered himself once more and focused on the here and now training instead of socializing which could wait.

3/5

With a smile at the thought Yuri swung the staff in a wide arc before bringing it close to his body and thrusting once again. The feeling of the movement was not quite natural though and the thrust suffered as a result. With a grim determination Yuri began at one tenth full speed and repeated the thrusting motion over and over until he felt it was correct at which point he increased his speed to one fifth followed by a fourth, then a third, a half, two thirds, and finally full speed. As the last thrust was made he felt good feed back through the staff and smiled.

4/5

Now for his final test he spun and swung the staff in a wide arc before allowing it to come into both hands as he stepped forward and thrust. The feeling was superb and he promptly made as though to block an attack from the left across his body before turning and thrusting as a counter. His hands tingled as the bamboo slid along them only catching briefly as the ridges slid over his callused hands. With a final thrust towards the ground as though finishing a downed opponent Yuri stood and stretched before going to consult the book for other ideas of how to train.

Yuri woke on the sand with the staff across his arm and standing before wiping the sand from his body stretched slowly before spinning the staff and considering what his next move should be. With a breath he looked over the book and nodded before deciding the pole vault would be the next move. With a shift of his weight he hopped lightly on the sand to get an idea for how high he could jump normally and once sure of that tried jumping as high as possible to get an idea for his natural limits.

Pole Vault 1/5

As he determined that his average jump in the sand would take him roughly two feet in the air. With a nod he took a slow running start and planted the end of the pole in the sand and jumped using it to vault an extra four feet after jumping. However it was not exactly what he was looking for and with a frown he set the staff next to the book and shirt and decided a bit of gymnastics to warm up this morning would be useful. With a nod to himself he moved away from his belongings again and began jumping and tumbling on the sand.

PostPosted: Fri May 20, 2011 6:14 pm

As he continued his tumbling Yuri felt for the point where he could shift his momentum downwards to launch himself upwards. It was a difficult trick but was useful especially when it came to something like the technique he was currently working on. With a frown he shifted his weight and moved forward jumping forward into a hand spring and then pushing off to his feet where he spun slightly to gain more height. With a slow exhalation he landed and slipped in the sand before walking to the staff and taking it up once more.

3/5

With a breath he moved forward and planted the end of the staff in the sand while jumping forward and rotating the staff to spin it and launch himself further forward than he had before. With a laugh he rolled from landing and came up to his feet before slamming the staff into the ground to help himself come to a halt. As he slid to a stop though he considered the uses of the trick he was learning, it seemed sort of obvious but if it was possible to vault any direction it could be a dodge, retreat, or charge with minimum changes.

4/5

Yuri grinned before standing and centering himself, suddenly he pushed off the staff with it planted behind him and jumped forward. As he landed he planted the staff to his left and pushed off to move to the right before rotating and placing the staff on the right side. He then vaulted over the staff jumping nearly six feet before landing lightly and stretching before going to consult the book on what the next skill to learn should be. The vault was fun and fit in well with gymnastics in his mind.

Yuri tilted his head as he read through the next segment of the book, this time he saw a move that easily tied into the prior move. This time the skill shown was the staff slam and it consisted of a flipping downward strike. He decided however that the first thing to do would be to practice the stances and forms associated with the move before taking to the airborne version. He wanted to make sure he had an idea of how to use it casually and quickly instead of only as a finishing move that was more linear than he normally preferred.

Staff slam 1/7

To begin with Yuri took a high stance shifting both hands to the same end of the staff and standing with his left hand pulled back to his left shoulder while his right hand was holding the staff near the halfway point so that his hand hovered near his hip. Yuri took a breath and moved forward while rotating the staff into a direct downward slam. As the staff was flipped over he used the momentum increase from squatting to strengthen the blow so that the staff slammed into the sand.

2/7

With a nod he stood and moved through a brief form that combined the spin and thrusting he had practiced the previous night with the ground slams that were basic for staffs before he began adding jumping slams to the form as a finishing move of sorts along with downward thrusts. With a shrug of his shoulders he pulled the staff back to his body and spun it before pausing and moving to check the chapter for any more advice about the jumping variation.

3/7

With a nod he moved back and went through the spins and thrusts associated with the technique before sending a low kick intended to sweep the phantom opponent in his mind. As his mental opponent fell he rose up and jumped before slamming the staff on the ground causing a shallow furrow to appear in the sand. Yuri smiled at the feedback he felt in his hands and stood slowly shaking the sand off the staff and his hands while he considered how to do it from a flip.

4/7
PostPosted: Fri May 20, 2011 7:18 pm

Yuri spun quickly swinging the staff down before using the vault to jump into the air and perform a flip before slamming it downward in a hard strike. He could easily imagine how it would be useful in the long run but at the same time he was having trouble seeing how it would be good against an agile opponent. With a frown he decided that he would just have to learn it properly and try it out in a fight as soon as possible. He already knew who he wanted to kill first but it was not the intent of a murderer, simply that of an animal.

5/7

He knew a mad dog when he saw one and felt that one that advertised their madness so casually was the biggest danger possible. A quiet sociopath was always preferable to a flashy psychopath though there were so few degrees of separation. Vaguely he wondered if it was a form of cannibalistic to kill those that were so similar to himself simply because he knew they were not the same and were threats to what he considered important. With a sigh he knew that while he was considered a sociopath for his views he could not allow mental illness to gain traction.

6/7

With a shake of his head he returned to the task at hand and performed a quick standing flip that flipped the staff with his body before arcing it down with force onto the sand. It would have to be part of a follow up or ambush technique that would catch an opponent off guard or defenseless. With a shake of his head he decided to consult the book for the next phase in order to quickly move ahead with his training so that he could put the dog down before it grew strong.

As Yuri flipped through the book he noticed that despite the layout it was not really required to go through each section in order. The staff techniques did not all build on one another but instead were to a large degree stand alone techniques that could chain together easily but could be learned in some cases out of order. Frowning slightly he thumbed through the pages before looking up at the night sky and shrugging. With a sigh he sat and read by the moonlight as he debated what to do next.

Power Slam 1/7

As he frowned at the text Yuri tilted his head and debated between what he viewed as a toss up between defensive and offensive techniques. The parry technique seemed useful but so did the sweep and uppercut. However even beyond those the ki techniques seemed most intriguing. With a frown he decided that the next thing to learn would definitely be the power slam. If he could master that he would have a move that could be offensive or defensive as needed. With a smile he began the next phase of training.

2/7

Standing with the staff he moved out into the waves until he stood ankle deep in the surf. Closing his eyes and blocking out the world he began to meditate to focus his energy. The first step was gathering his ki and if he could remember the sensation of it he would be able to gather it faster in the future when he lacked the leisure to center himself and focus. Inhaling the fresh brine scent and exhaling through his mouth he began to let the sound of the waves reflect the flow of his ki.

3/7

With steady breathing Yuri let his mind flow with the tide and his energy well up from the earth and down from the sky. Once centered in his chest near his diaphragm he exhaled and sent it coursing along his arms. This was a simple meditative exercise from his youth, the real challenge now was the next step of moving it beyond his body and into the staff. It was one thing to control the flow of the energy in his body where his awareness was peaked but he knew it would be harder outside of his body.

4/7

Changing his mind set Yuri turned his attention from his energy and to his weapon, it needed to be as much a part of him as his limbs. He slid his hands along it exploring every grove and crack, shifted it between hands to learn it's weight and balance. Slowly he envisioned it as simply another piece of himself and something that was once living. With this mind set he once again gathered his energy letting it flow through him like the sound of the tide washing over him and began focusing it.

5/7

This time as the energy flowed through his body it was almost easy to channel the energy through his arms and into the bamboo staff. He then simply directed it into the tip nearest the ground. This created a steady flow of energy towards the end and he could sense the tension from the massed energy beginning to build. Yuri could feel sweat forming on his skin as he directed his energy in this way for the first time and gradually brought it to a condensed point where he literally had almost no control over it.

6/7

As the energy peaked Yuri slammed the tip of the staff onto the ground and released the energy in one burst. The result was more than he had expected as the energy burst outwards in a manner he could best describe as a bomb and he was untouched even as a small crater of sand stood a few feet from him slowly filling with water. Yuri began to laugh out loud when a wave of dizziness swept him and he crumpled to his knees. He had put too much into the technique and training and now he was wiped out. Shaking his head he stood and used the staff to balance as he collected his shirt and book before heading back to the dorms.

Mira arrived to the beach, caught her eyes to the vast large golden sand and the crystal blue ocean water in the area. She moved her eye's around, seeing the shop against the forest full of beach activity. Mira holded tightly on her book in front of her with the sand gotten on her. This place really looks nice. She should of came here earlier. This would be a perfect place to call a vacation. She only got a long thing back strap on her shoulder, that pretty much not use for the beach activity. She need a swimsuit to actually seam prepare of coming to the beach. If only she brought sandlles from her travel, because right now, she thinks she can feel some sand gotten in her shoes.

As Jonathan stood their admiring the view, another student had come to the beach to do the same. He was about to just completely ignore her, and go about his business, but then noticed that she had brought a wooden sword with her. He did originally come here to look for a sparring partner, and he didn't want to fight someone unarmed, so this seemed like a rather good opportunity. "Excuse me." He called out to Mira, and slowly walked his way over to her. "You wouldn't happen to want to try out that wooden sword on a moving target, would you?"

((You actually can't see the sword. It's in the bag on the shoulder, shone in the picture >.>))
Mira turn over to the blue hair man that approach to her. "W-What? uh...." Mira was a bit confused from his request. She doesn't know that he's a student, for she never seen him before. It seam like a strange thing to ask for a random person. "W-Well, I suppose so. Why did you ask?" She said to him in a weepy geeky way.

((My bad. Lets just say that I knew it was a wooden/bamboo sword holder))

Jonathan merely shrugged as he was asked the question. "No particular reason. I just wanted to try to see how well I can fair against someone with a weapon." He then turned around to show her the wooden buckler he had strapped to his back. "At least how well I can do against one with a shield." He then turned back towards Mira, and extended his hand out for a hand shake. "My name is Jonathan by the way."

Mira look at Jonathan hands, seaming like she never done this juster before. Mira know right away that this guy must be Japanese or he is really use to of the American greeting. Mira gave a little bow and than took his hand to shake it. "My name is Mira Yu, from the Yu clan in japan. Are you new to the academy?" She asked him and let go.

"Well, I guess we can uhm.... spar if you want..." She she said, not sure to go alone with his idea. Sure it is a good idea to practice threw comeback, but.... she has a trouble of not holding back.
