It was late evening, and the sun was slowly sinking below the horizon. Lieutenant Gypsum had made a special, early appearance this afternoon, and was now sitting atop the scaffolding of a construction project overlooking the stadium where Meadowview's team was facing off another school from out of town. Guen wished she could be down there - but this was the best she could do. Crystal Academy's team had never been good enough to merit matches against teams from other cities. It was exciting, but a little sad- being on the outside, looking in. She wondered if any of the girls on their team were the same as the ones that Crystal had been pitted against last season. If they were, she was certain they'd do well- they'd been good.
Meadowview made a goal, and she stood up, whooping and cheering- and nearly lost her balance. She was suddenly very glad she'd decided to take this trip powered up- she was pretty sure there was no way she'd have been as confident about scaling the half-completed building. It undeniably had the best view of all the structures surrounding the field. So what if everyone looked like ants from here? It looked kind of like the play by plays they sometimes had online- with the little animated pictures that used colored dots to represent the players.
It was certainly more fun that staying home and finishing homework.

Kallichore had no idea she'd be in such luck tonight.
An initial scan revealed a Negaverse officer somewhere in the vicinity, but the strength of the signature was much different than what she'd previously encountered. That was what made it so odd. Since she'd never encountered a signature quite like this one, the senshi kept to the shadows and trailed the Negaverse agent at a distance, watching her. It was definitely a she, with those unmistakable heels. The Nega didn't seem to notice her, which was a blessing as far as Kallichore was concerned. Her heels were muffled by the distance she had and the noises coming from the stadium. The bright lights were all focused on the game instead of what was happening up on the rooftops high above it.
The Nega then stopped and seemed to be entranced by the soccer game. SO entranced that she nearly fell off the scaffolding she was sitting on. Was she... was she new? If she wasn't new, then she either didn't care that Kallichore was approaching her (in which case, she could be a Captain or higher, like Zinkenite) or... Or she didn't know how to scan.
This girl with bright teal hair... maybe it was seafoam? Whatever it was didn't matter - what mattered was whether or not Kallichore's hunch was right. She was now on the same building as the Negaverse officer, and the closer she got, the more surprised the senshi was. She expected the Nega to turn around at any moment and launch some horrid fireball at her or fling her off the roof and impale her on the rebar below. When step after step towards the girl garnered no reaction, Kallichore went with her instinct. Standing up straight just a few feet behind the girl, Kallichore crossed her arms and looked as stern as she could.
"Planning on wrecking a soccer game?" she asked, her voice low.

"What? With their team, there's no way I could be bad enough to..." Gypsum started to automatically reply, but trailed off, stiffening.
THERE. IS. SOMEONE. BEHIND ME?
How distracted had she BEEN? Sure, this had probably been the best soccer game she'd had the opportunity to watch in a long time- but that was no excuse for being so inattentive. She was still powered up, which let to a terrible possibility. Man, don't let this be another senshi. Those bruises just healed up... Maybe it was just some creeper. Some decidedly female creeper, judging by the voice. Still, she just wanted to watch a game, not pick a fight, civilian or otherwise. She turned around as slowly and unthreateningly as possible. She kept a death grip on the scaffolding under her fingertips though, just in case whoever it was tried to push her over.
Oh, lovely. It WAS a senshi. "Well. Uh. To answer your question, no. I mean, it'd be hard to do from here anyway, and I'd LOVE to get down there and play, but I probably WOULD screw everything up. But um, if you're going to beat me up, could you do it quickly? The match just started, so I think if you hit me in this eye," she gestured toward her left, "I can probably still keep up." She absolutely expected this to go badly. Pessimist? Her? She figured, she might lose her depth perception, and getting back down from her perch would be difficult, but she hoped if she offered no resistance it would go well.
Well, better than last time, anyway.

While Kallichore hadn't expected that reaction at all, she tried to keep up her stern appearance. Really? She was more concerned with watching the soccer game than trying to steal energy and whatever else the Negaverse did? That was surprising. This girl was certainly new, which meant that Kallichore was no longer the greenest kid on the block. That was relieving. Sometimes it was painful to know you were the newest person at your job. It made the senshi quite self-conscious at times.
When asked to 'get the beating over with quickly', the senshi uncrossed her arms and tilted her head. Obviously she'd been on the receiving end of some senshi beatings. Now that was a welcome change of pace. Kallichore herself hadn't won a fight against a Negaverse officer yet, but without the thrill of the fight from both sides, it seemed more bully-esque to beat down someone who only wanted to watch a soccer game. Even if she didn't have the heart to take this girl out, the least she could do was gather information for the Blood Moon Court's archives.
"If I choose to leave you be, would you answer a few questions for me?"
Mentally, Kallichore was compiling a list of things to ask the Nega, such as why she joined up, what her name and rank was, what the Negaverse may be planning next... too bad she didn't bring a notepad with her this time. She better have a good memory then.

Surprisingly, things seemed to be looking up. Gypsum let herself relax a little. It didn't look like she'd be taking a beating after all - not yet, anyway.Guen was even more surprised when she offered a much less painful ultimatum. She wondered if the girl would believe her when she told her she knew almost nothing. She started to open her mouth to say just that, but paused. Why bother with the truth? Maybe if she invented some incredible story, she'd get off the hook- and not have to worry about accidentally giving out trade secrets.
Whatever. She'd try the truth first, but if that failed... "Sure. You can sit, you know. " She patted the rebar next to her invitingly. If they were going to do this, they might as well both be comfortable. "What do you want to know? I'm kind of new to all this, mind you. But I don't think Queen Whatsername is going to come after me for having a little chat over a game. Hopefully." She grinned hopelessly. If she were going to get in trouble, she might as well deserve it. Besides, she'd never gotten to talk to a senshi before.
"Can I ask a few questions in return? I won't ask where the batcave is or anything, I promise. I've just always wondered how things went on your side."

"I'd prefer to stand... if you don't mind."
Kallichore knew she wanted to know a certain number of things, but if she could explain what was going on as far as the senshi were concerned... could Negaverse agents choose to leave? She had no idea if such a thing were possible, or if the Negaverse agents could be cleansed of evil. If they could corrupt a senshi, who's to say the opposite couldn't happen to a Nega? The senshi started to pace very slowly back and forth in front of where the Nega with the trenchcoat sat. Were they the same age? Could they have gone to the same school? With magic glamors hiding them both from each other, there would be no way to tell.
"You can ask me anything you want. But first, what's your name and designation? Or rank, if you prefer. I'm Sailor Kallichore." The senshi gave a nod. "Now you have a name for me." And I expect the same in return. Kallichore felt herself gaining more confidence the more time she spent in powered form. Oftentimes she'd find herself missing the feel of the fuku during the day, but she never let herself power up until everything else was done in her civilian life. This meant patrolling was becoming more frequent now that school was winding down. Was it the same for the Negaverse?
The cheers of the crowd peaked as another goal was scored, but Kallichore couldn't see, nor did she care, which side had gotten the point. All eyes except theirs were on the game. "Why did you decide to join the Negaverse?"

Gypsum shrugged. If it made the girl feel better to stand, she could do as she liked. She watched the other girl pacing, patiently awaiting her questions. She was somewhat pleased that the senshi felt confident enough to give her her name- that was a good sign, right? Even as a negaverse Lieutenant, Guen was slow to see the point in conflict- if this could be handled peacefully, all the better.
"Lieutenant Gypsum," she replied smartly. "It's nice to meet you, Sailor Kallichore. " She smiled in as friendly a manner as she could manage. From her behavior, she doubted this girl was much older than her- funny, how that worked out. It was a little like being on an opposing sports team, she mused- of course, ignoring the rather completely opposite methodology. She gave herself a moment to consider her question seriously. Why had she joined the negaverse? There were a lot of reasons. Part of it was that she felt it was really her only choice - and that was the big difference, wasn't it? She CHOSE to be here tonight, to steal energy from those she felt were undeserving. They'd earned it, after all, hadn't they? She couldn't turn a blind eye on the malcontents of society anymore. The negaverse had offered power, power she would never have had as a normal girl. There was sure to be a price to pay- but that was a problem for another day, in her mind. Besides, she knew, deep down in her soul... She would never be the good guy. She wasn't strong enough. She wasn't brave enough. She wasn't worthy enough. That last thought rankled.
Aloud, she said, "I've thought about it alot, myself. I mean, this is all new to me, mind, you, but. I feel like... I belong now. It's weird. I have people I matter to, even if it's based on how useful I can be, or how good I am at what I do- those things really are important. And. I know I'm not a good person, not really." She paused then, as the crowd cheered. She hardly heard it; she was in a dark place, now. She stared blindly out at the city lights beyond. "But the Negaverse gives me power. The power to make them pay." She frowned a little then.
"No one is really good, you know. Not on the inside. Not when it counts." She wasn't sure where that thought had come from- but it felt right.
She shook her head, ponytail bouncing. "Um, so, basically that's it," she said, scratching the back of her head and looking a little sheepish. She was more than a little embarrassed at her sudden outburst of over-information. Well, she DID ask.
"Why'd you become a Scout? Besides the uniforms," she added teasingly.

Gypsum? Okay, got the name and the rank. Lieutenant must be the lowest rank, which made the ladder go from Lieutenant to Captain to General. Ah, now that made sense. Where a senshi went after her first form, she didn't know. She was almost sad to say she knew more about the Negaverse ranking system than she did the one for her own side. But at least she had a name to place on the girl in the trenchcoat. She wrapped her arms behind her back as she turned to continue her pacing.
"Make who pay? Did someone do something to you?" Wanting the power to change what happened to you, or to avenge yourself, made a lot of sense. Kallichore herself often wished for that kind of power when things were out of her control, but she never once really wanted revenge. Not in a way that would seriously injure someone. Not like the Negaverse wanted. Did Gypsum know what the Negaverse really planned to do if they were able to rid the Earth of the senshi? Kallichore nearly shuddered at the thought. "Queen Beryl, did she ask you to join up? Or was it someone else who offered you the power? Were revenge and the desire to belong... were those the reasons you joined?"
Another moment of silence while her heels clicked. Kallichore was getting some information so far, but everyone's reasoning behind joining the Negaverse were likely all unique as they themselves were. The senshi did find it interesting to know why some people did join up, though. Scheelite was another person who had wanted a family setting. "No one is really good? Perhaps you just haven't seen the real good people in action. Being good is harder sometimes. Sometimes it's nearly impossible but... that's what makes it worth it."
Kallichore shook her head. "I didn't ask, it just happened. I was nearly killed, but now I can help people who need help. That's part of my job." Another turn, another pass in front of Gypsum.

Make someone pay. Had she said that? Even as she thought it, she remembered. She shrugged uncomfortably. She wasn't used to this much introspection.
"Yes...and no, I guess. It's not important anymore. But... There are bad people out there, and they deserve to be punished. Not just for me. Is it really so bad to want that?"
"I've seen good people," she added defensively, "I've seen what they do when things get hard. They give up. Just like that. Because, what's most important, is...is..." She paused, but continued with renewed conviction, "What's most important is yourself." She tucked her knees up under her chin, huddling in the dark. It had been hard to admit that out loud: she felt a twinge of guilt even as she'd said it. But that doesn't make it any less true. She sighed unhappily. "It's not just about belonging. It's... I don't have to pretend anymore. Pretend like I'm good enough. Act like I don't think terrible things, sometimes. We're judged by performance, not virtue." She frowned, darkly. Not a lot of virtue to go around there, really.
She listened to the girl's story, about becoming a senshi. Gypsum hadn't been chosen like that. Well, not really. She had to earn her place among the ranks of the Negaverse - it wasn't some kind of divine gift. Well alright, to be fair, it didn't sound like Kallichore had had an easy time either - nearly getting killed was something Guen had so far been relatively spared from. She had been asked to join, or had she been conscripted? It was all kind of fuzzy now.
"It wasn't Queen Beryl, I...I don't really remember anymore. I guess I should. I guess I should care that I don't remember but..." Don't fix what ain't broke, she thought, but instead finished lamely with, "I think I'm happier now. I have a purpose. Plus, I'm careful! Not everyone is careful. I make sure they're bad first." She seemed earnest, now. "You know, the...people." She swallowed, and said in a small voice, "I've never really hurt anybody. Never...never killed anybody. Not like that." She wanted someone to believe her. She felt like she had made the right decision, but as always, she never really trusted herself.
Finally, she asked something that had been bugging her for some time about the senshi. "We have Queen Beryl. She unites us and organizes us as a unit. But you senshi...I don't know much, but it just seems so chaotic for you. Don't you guys have like, a leader?" She felt the need to add disdainfully, "Our Queen may not be the nicest, but she's there for us. She's behind us, all the way."

Gypsum seemed so unsure of herself. She was doing her best to justify her choice, but who wouldn't? Kallichore threw herself into her job because it felt right. It felt like she needed to make a difference, to stop the Negaverse from taking over the world. Whether or not they installed Serenity as the leader and promoter of peace was left to be seen. Such a thing didn't concern Kallichore at that moment. They had more pressing matters to attend to. When Gypsum explained that she'd seen good people give up, Kallichore shook her head. "Putting a blanket statement to everyone like that, you know it's impossible, statistically other otherwise. But everyone thinks terrible things sometimes, you know?"
It would be impossible to say that we're human if we didn't have some horrible thoughts. I know I've wanted to hit the neighborhood kids with the car before. Pulling a strand behind her ear absently, the senshi continued. "It's whether or not we act on those feelings that determines whether or not we're bad. Self control is a virtue." Heels clicked on the unfinished roofing and the sound was muffled by cheering crowd behind them. They were so clueless, but that was alright with her. Being a hero was a thankless job if comic books, movies and television were anything to go by. As long as she had companions to lean on, she would be happy to continue as she was.
"Was your conversion painful? Or did your memory become affected? That seems odd to me. I remember my awakening like it was yesterday." Oh yes, she remembered Albali, she remembered Derpraline and she remembered the first time she fired off her attack. She was prepared to use it at the drop of a hat, but Gypsum didn't seem like she wanted to fight. Instead, she seemed very unsure, very... scared? No, scared wasn't the right word. The senshi listened to the lieutenant explain what her reasoning was for wanting to be a part of the Negaverse. "The Negaverse kill. They kill and they hurt a lot of people. Please keep that in mind. That's what we senshi are trying to stop."
At the question of a leader, Kallichore nodded her head in the affirmative. "We have leaders. Some act on their own, some follow the leaders. You're given a choice on our side, I suppose." While the answer was true, it left out the fact that Serenity was missing. Kallichore had her leader, and no doubt other senshi had their own. That was all that was needed.

Gypsum couldn't deny her words- she knew it was true, what the Negaverse did. But she was sure they had their reasons. It didn't matter anymore, anyway -she'd signed her ticket. Doubting herself wasn't going to help her any.
"It wasn't painful. It was. Easy," she said, trying to remember. "I remember bits and pieces. It's like..." It's like I'm losing myself to some monster, she thought. But she had decided to let the monster win, not so long ago. It was so much easier, after all, wasn't it? Self control. That was something Gypsum certainly didn't need anymore. No, in the Negaverse, indulgence was almost a prescribed behavior. She doesn't know what I've done, Guen thought. She couldn't understand. She was a senshi... she was destined to be something great. She felt a pang of jealousy. Gypsum was just another Lieutenant. To be more, she'd have to claw her way to the top. She couldn't keep wallowing in doubt and self pity. Especially not in front of the enemy.
She knew distantly that she was being unfair to the other girl - she had probably faced trials and tribulations as bad or worse than her own - but she didn't care. "If it just happened to you, was it really a choice?" She got up, dusting her knees. "I may not remember much, but I know mine was. Even if it was wrong, it was my mistake to make." She said this almost proudly. "You can try and stop us, but end the end, who's got more to lose - the one decided to dedicate themselves to the cause, or the ones who were destined?."
She glanced at the distant game. Somehow, she wasn't as interested anymore. "I'm not good enough to be good, but I think I might be bad enough to be bad."

"I'm glad it wasn't painful for you."
Now I know a little bit more about how it works. But I can't necessarily generalize it to all the Negaverse agents. For her, it was a choice freely given and offered. For others? I can't say for sure just yet. I guess we will wait and see. I wish I had a tape recorder... or a notepad.
Kallichore stopped mid pace and looked at Gypsum, expressionless. There was enough in her words to make the senshi think one of the contributing factors to her corruption was severely low self-esteem. This was something Kallichore based off of her demeanor and her dialogue. Could the Negaverse really find people who are at their most vulnerable, offer them power and then corrupt them to the cause? It certainly seemed that way. If anything, most of the Negaverse agents she'd come across were weary from all the fighting. No doubt both sides had equal casualties despite what the other may say. Kallichore suddenly wished she was telepathic. She wanted to know what Gypsum was thinking.
Was her being a senshi a choice? "Absolutely. I could choose to throw it away and never power up again after my awakening. I would assume it would be the same for you. While the awakening wasn't my choice, continuing down the path certainly was." Gypsum had a point thought - everyone makes mistakes. What worried the senshi was... would Beryl allow someone to leave if they decided the Negaverse wasn't right for them? Somehow she doubted it.
“Courage is as often the outcome of despair as of hope; in the one case we have nothing to lose, in the other, everything to gain. Diane de Pointiers." the senshi quoted. "I firmly believe that both sides are fighting for what they believe, to one end or another. The only way to ensure that you don't lose is choosing not to play."

It was Gypsum's turn to pace, now. Kallichore was right, after a fashion, she grudgingly admitted. She could just quit, but she had kept on going. Gypsum on the other hand, didn't have that option. But hey, no one from on high had come down to offer her any kind of magical senshi power, either. She may have given in to the proverbial dark side at a moment of weakness, but she couldn't afford to have that weakness anymore. She had taken what she could get, as far as she was concerned.
Her heels clicked over the concrete and rebar and she traced the other girl's path. "Just throw it away, huh? No, I think the only way out for someone like me -" is to throw myself away. She stopped suddenly, looking out at the expanse of the ground below. That would never really be an option, for her. "Well then, I suppose maybe for me it's more about survival. Thanks for being polite with me. I'm not sure if this conversation has helped me or hurt me, but -" she took a breath,"but I think I needed to hear it. I guess. I don't really have any fancy quotes for you. I've gotta believe what I've gotta believe, for my own sake."
She stared almost meekly at the senshi's shoes. "Besides, I've never hurt anyone who didn't deserve it. I know I can say that." Not that anyone would believe me. She leaned against a pipe that jutted crudely out the concrete platform, arms crossed and looking uncomfortable. "Did you have any more questions?" She met her eyes then, and the stadium lights flickered. Was it the halftime break, or was the game already over?

Kallichore shook her head. She'd given the Negaverse officer something to think about, and gotten some more information about the opposing side. Even though no blood was shed, Kallichore considered this a victory and would record her findings as soon as possible. She turned to face Gypsum and could tell she was a little tired. Even though they were on opposite sides of the war, everyone deserved a little rest time. She herself had had a couple of peaceful patrols free of Youma or random Nega ambushes. Sometimes she'd sit and just watch a movie at home, but she wouldn't be powered for it. Being powered made you a target. Maybe Gypsum would learn that.
"You wouldn't be throwing it away. You'd be choosing not to take up the mantle. Those are two very different choices." With a nod, the senshi smiled. It may or may not have been seen in the darkness, and she turned her head slightly as the crowed cheered again. Apparently, the game was still on. Must've been half time before. "I don't have any more questions." The senshi turned and put on heeled boot on the edge of the building, looking out into the darkened city. Most everyone who was awake was at the game, cheering like there was nothing else going on in the world. The bright lights of the stadium made Kallichore think of her home in the sky. No, her home was here.
Turning back to Gypsum, she issued a warning. "I'm polite to those who are polite to me. But keep in mind the other senshi may not afford you the luxury of being amicable. The next time we meet, I may have to show you my power." And with that, the senshi took a leap off the building to land on the scaffolding below. She quietly descended to the street and disappeared.
