Milton Bates - Milton wants to be your friend. Like, really, really, really badly. This air of desperation, stemming from parents who never really took him or anything he said or did seriously, has caused him to either alienate his peers or annoy the crap out of them when he clings like a leech. He's a conformist, lacks moderation, and tends to "act now, apologize later" when most of his failings were self-fulfilled prophecies. If he had just toned down on the whole "LIKE ME PLEEEASE" shtick and actually took a step back to get to know himself, Milton would have discovered the Before in him sooner.
Before, when not flailing about and apologizing for his accidents, is a slightly childish but agreeable, light-hearted fellow. He's fiercely loyal to those he considers as friends and is insanely protective of them. To the point of taking a bullet (or a booterang) for them! In the initial phase of the training, Before's willingness to sacrifice himself was out of his lingering self-esteem issues as Milton. Operating under the assumption that at any given time he will be thrown under the bus, he decided to preempt it. But having met Boss, Bix, Bee, and Thor, Milton has now begun to consider the possibility that any sacrifice he makes is not out of a self-destructive preemptive measure. He's still fine with taking a beating, believing his actions make him deserving of any punishment. Just leave his friends out of it or he'll flip his s**t out on you >CCCC
Whether as Beta Four or Milton Bates, Before has, and always will, love to give people nicknames and feels any rejection of said nickname is a rejection of him :CCCCC But that's okay, he'll just give you a new one! CCCCC: His surprising resiliency may help him deal with his excessive conformism as it's too soon for him to successfully grow his missing (metaphorical) spine.
Vanna Black - Vanna has self-esteem issues due to being neglected and replaced by previous hunters. She honed in on Before's deep-rooted need to belong and found a kindred spirit in him. Actually, she hit the jackpot with Before, because he's treating her like royalty and she gets to act like she's the hunter instead of the weapon. Yes, she loves the pampering and compliments and how protective he is of her and as a result, it's all going to her, uh, metaphorical head. (Which technically as a former Devil Shield means ninety percent of her.)
She's possessive of him, and does not approve of him hanging out with Hunters. Mostly because they too have weapons and she will always fear that Before will want to "trade up" for someone younger and cuter and stronger and- "You shut up before Before gets any ideas or I'll slam into your face, SPIKES FIRST!"
Vanna is also very expressive and opinionated and confrontational, which makes Before's conformist ways frustrating for her. More often than not, she will make her displeasure about something known and offer a solution with full expectation that Before will do something about it. Which of course may not be immediately fulfilled if it will cause some issues with the other Hunters.
Why did your human character choose to become a Hunter? Solo
Milton wasn't looking for answers, or revenge but he was looking for a place where he could belong. He wanted to be with those who knew, who understood, who actually took all the weird s**t he'd seen all his life seriously. When he learned that such a group exists, Milton wasted no time in joining. He regrets nothing. (Except maybe killing all those people during training /;A;/ Oh God, I'm so sorry!)

Having been a Devil Shield, Vanna's natural ability to hover allows Before to carry her with little to no difficulty.
Fast and Furious
When thrown, Vanna can increase her size and rotation speed to do more damage. (The size and speed thing is a visual effect more than anything.)
