So I'm in a high school marching band. I'm in colorguard, and currently playing french horn. Lately, I've been being harassed about learning mellophone to march next year. It's appealing. I like how it sounds, and it's moderately easier than horn... but I love guard! I'm looking for someone who has left guard for horn, or vice versa and if they've regretted it... I don't mind hearing stories of other instrument switches, but I just don't want to make a decision I'll later regret... Thanks!
Note: Right now, it looks like I'll march guard and play the mellophone for homecoming and in the stands, possibly parades... :3 the best of both worlds maybe?

Well, unfortunately my band is too small too have a real colorguard so we have to use band members who don't really play much to do the colorguard for us (mostly woodwinds). But, I would say do what you want to do and you'll have no regrets biggrin

Well I would do both for a year if you like that keep doing it but if you want to cut it back to one again I would choose the one you enjoyed doing more

As a fellow french hornist and a mellophone player I say that you should do mello for at least one year of marching. I switched from flute to french horn my freshman year and I totally fell in love with it. But I mean ultimately it's your choice. But remember, once you go brass you never go back. smile

If you have a winter season, maybe you could play mello for marching band, horn for concert band, and do Winterguard? That's what two of the boys in band did this year. They played flute / sax during marching season, then did concert season on their respective instruments while participating in the Winterguard.
But, as always, do what you really enjoy doing. Maybe try mello out, see if you like it. If it's not something you wanna do for a few months, by all means, do guard! :]
(And I totally disagree with rock_greenday_lover. I'm a flute player, but I learned mello for corps this year and horn for orch because we were so short. I definitely prefer flute, haha! =P)

Haha, I actually played flute in 5th grade and for a trip Freshman year.... but I hated the thing 3nodding I think I'm going to stick with Colorguard as the main thing. The BD is letting me play mellophone in the stands and he's really appreciative of me voolunteering to do that. But both he and our isntructor said I needed to stay with Guad. Her opinion is biased though XD

Mother_Brother_Dog Guard. I'm biased. I hate mello and it messes up your embouchure razz I've never had a problem with mello messing with my embouchure, but then, I've always used an adapter so I could use my french horn mouthpiece.
