Sakelo had been with his new clan for a while now. Originally he had planned to move on, but ... he kinda liked it. Sure, most of the females were a bit witchy, but his girl Zalika was awfully cute when she got fussy. And really, they were no more obnoxious than most of the rogues you met. He would rather have a bunch of ferocious females on his side than trying to murder him over some carrion.
Sakelo hadn't had much to do with Zalika's litter-siblings. He barely recognized the striped male he spotted that morning, but he looked enough like Zalika's family that Sakelo assumed he must be one of them. And he had a female with him! From atop his rocky perch where he was keeping a lookout on the borders - actually, he had been taking a nap until he heard the loud chatter of the two strange hyenas - Sakelo raised his eyebrows. Even at this distance it was obvious that the female was very, very pregnant.
Delighted with this gossip, Sakelo scampered down from his perch and made his way to his lady-love. "Zalika!" Sakelo said gleefully. "I think there are going to be more pups around soon."

Zalika had been awfully pleased with Sakelo. He hadn't seemed to show any interest in her sister (which was obviously the most important thing), and he'd been loyal as far as she could tell -- and he was really, really good at relaying gossip.
Zalika loved gossip. She loved it a lot.
The princess of the Nguvu'Utawala had been sunning herself near the central lake. It wasn't too hot here nor was it too cool, and it was the perfect day for doing nothing. Zalika was pretty good at doing nothing, though her mind was sharp and keen she wasn't the most active hyena in the clan.
Cracking open an eye she peered at Sakelo as he drew closer. More pups? Gods above, what on earth for? Sighing heavily she drew herself up and peered at Sakelo.
"Is my Aunt pregnant again?" That was probably who was pregnant.

Nope, as far as he knew, the fearsome queen was not pregnant. The thought was a bit alarming. If she popped out a horde like Bahari seemed to enjoy doing ... Sakelo avoided her as much as possible anyways. He sensed that dealing with a mountain of pups would strain the already ill-tempered queen's patience to the breaking point. Yikes.
But no, no. Fortunately it wasn't Dikeledi. He shook his head, grinning. "No, not Queen Dikeledi. I was keeping a lookout for dangerous rogues this morning and I saw that brother of yours - the brown one - coming home." Sakelo paused a moment for drama.
"He had a new female with him. She's as big around as a boulder!" Sakelo finished proudly. Surely Zalika would gasp and run to see this new female, to look her over with scorn. Sakelo was well aware that Zalika viewed anything her brothers did with contempt.

Dread. It shimmied up her spine, settling in her heart like a hard lump of cold mud. Then came the panic. No, this was not how it was supposed to happen. Zalika was the best, she was the oldest and looked almost identical to her mother. She was the one who was supposed to be having pups first, not her stupid worthless brother!
"She must be a stupid, stupid hyena," she hissed to herself before turning that bright crimson gaze on to Sakelo. The dread turned to fury and her mane bristled, picked up by the cool breeze that wafted across the lake's shore.
"There's only one thing we can do now, Sakelo." Killing the stupid pregnant beast wouldn't be an option. That left one other alternative.

Sakelo was a bit taken aback. Usually Zalika loved being brought gossip. He had thought she would enjoy scoffing at her stupid brother and the female that had been dumb enough to ... interact with him. Instead, Zalika looked furious, ready to tear someone's throat out.
Now, Zalika was pretty hot when she got mad, and Sakelo usually enjoyed being along for the ride on her crazy train, but he didn't think he was down to murder another hyena. Especially a pregnant one, stupid or not. He tried to stifle his alarm, hoping Zalika didn't mean what he thought she did. "And what is that?" Sakelo asked cautiously.

Zalika lifted her chin, narrowing her eyes at Sakelo.
"We have to ... to ... I have to make an heir!" Duh! She grit her teeth, setting her jaw in annoyance. "I have to get pregnant. You have to make me pregnant. We have to have babies. Stupid Kepo can't be the only one making babies! I should have been first but I was so sure that nobody would want to have his pups that I didn't think it was going to be a huge rush."
She shook her head, still bristling.

Oh. Whew. At least Zalika didn't want to kill anyone.
Actually ... maybe he wasn't off the hook yet. Making an heir with Zalika sounded pretty fun, but with the mood Zalika was in, he wasn't sure. What if he wasn't up to her heir making standards?!
Clearly, this was a delicate situation.
"Your babies will be better than Kepo's," Sakelo said soothingly. "And Kepo's babies won't be princesses." Maybe that would settle her down a bit. Enough to where he wasn't half afraid she might bite him. "So you want me to ..." Sakelo felt suddenly awkward. Just a little while ago, he had just wanted a fling with Zalika, but now he was ... attached! He couldn't just give her babies and move on. And making babies was serious business, anyways. As far as Sakelo knew, he had never produced pups.

"Of course they'll be better. And they won't be princesses... but.. I was supposed to have babies first! I'm the heir! I'm the best daughter!" She scowled and stomped her foot as she said each sentence.
"And of course I want YOU to! Who else is going to do it? You're MINE. It's your duty as my consort or whatever to get this taken care of! This is important!! This is your job!" She was getting agitated now. He couldn't turn her down!! He just couldn't.
She would kill him so bad.
"Tonight!"

Zalika sure was adorable when she got all possessive and demanding. If Sakelo was going to be scared off by her crazy tantrums, he would have run away a long time ago. He definitely wasn't going to turn her down ... but this just wasn't very romantic.
"Of course I'll do it," Sakelo agreed. He would make it romantic, too. He would sweep her off her paws. He brightened up a bit at the prospect. It was sexy, but it just didn't seem right to have her order him to give her babies. "We can go on another date! And then we'll make babies."

Good. He'd agreed. She wanted to roll her eyes at the whole 'date' thing, but she didn't. Whatever, if he wanted to be all romantic and crap she didn't really care, but he had better be giving her babies or else she would kill him. He was lucky he was so nice to her and sweet and especially handsome or else he'd be pretty worthless.
Thankfully she was going to beat Kibibi to having babies. That was a huge weight off of her bristly shoulders.
"Fine, whatever, another date. Just... we're doing this tonight no matter what. You hear me, Sakelo? No matter what. No matter how long it takes."

Jeez, now that he finally had Zalika's motor revved and ready to go, she was weird as hell. He wasn't sure whether her spooky laser-beam intensity was exciting or alarming. Both.
"The more romantic it is, the more pups, I hear," Sakelo remarked loftily. Okay, so he had never heard any such thing, but maybe it would get Zalika to settle down a bit.
The way she was carrying on, if she didn't give birth to pups the very next day she might kill him.
