It had been a long night, maybe the longest night of Kaia's short life.
After Tanzanite had dropped her off at the apartment and made sure she was put to bed, Kaia had fallen into a deep sleep that only came to those recovering from stress and wounds. She'd had no time to be concerned about Khal and what might happen if he saw a dragon woman walking through the apartment, she'd had no time to be concerned that Hiro had made it out safely, she'd just slept.
As much as her body would have liked her to sleep for the better part of a day or more, however, Kaia's mind had begun to stir after she'd slept just enough to surface from her hibernation. The sun was up when she opened her eyes and if it hadn't been for the stiffness and soreness of her muscles, she probably would have jumped right up out of bed. Instead, she lay there weak and sore.
"Hiro?" her voice broke as she tried to speak, rough from smoke and screams. Her concern for others had woken her from sleep and now it was crashing down on her like an anvil. If he was there somewhere beyond her blurry vision, he would hear her. She needed to make sure he was okay.

Hiro had spent most of the night awake, or barely dozing. Worried over his Alkaid, he'd perched on the back on the sofa-turned-bed and just watched Kaia sleep. The amount of smoke she'd inhald had him worried, not to mention the traps the BMC had laid for them, and the final battle. His ears had been perked all night, twitching at every sound. Any time Kaia's breath rattled in her throat or was late in coming, his eye sprung open, a teal gleam in the darkness.
It had been a fitful, unrestful night for Hiro. But he wouldn't have had it any other way. His Kaia was safe and that was all he cared about.
When she awoke and called his name, he stretched and leapt down. He was careful not to land on Kaia. He'd been avoiding sleeping on her for a reason, worried enough about injuries and damage to her lungs as it was.
"Right here," he said, nuzzling at her throat and face. A loud purring surrounded them.

Relief crashed over Alkaid when she heard his immediate answer and with it she could relax, at least for a while. She let her head fall back into the pillow and she let out one long, deep sigh that hurt just as much as it helped.
"Good, you're okay," she croaked in a whisper, leaning her head into the gentle nuzzle. She would have brought a hand up to give him a please head scratch but at the moment, she could barely move her arm at all. She wasn't just injured, she was over exerted and exhausted. She knew she had things to do, but she also knew that her body was going to protest it every step of the way.
Instead of reaching up to pet him she just tilted her head over to look at him instead. "I couldn't remember where I'd seen you last. I think you were out of sight for the whole.. finale." She yawned a little then and blinked her eyes wearily. She was awake, but her body certainly didn't want to be.
Idly, she glanced towards the bedroom door and then around the apartment. It figured that Khal would still be asleep, despite everything. She kind of wished he wasn't - she could use painkillers and didn't really want to move.

"Giant phoenix youma? Every senshi ever crawling out of the woodwork?" Hiro's ears flattened against his head. "I was there for some of it... not so helpful, really, cat versus white moon senshi."
It was hard to admit, if only because Hiro thought under normal circumstances he would be more than a match for any senshi. But trying to block their attacks from hitting Tanzanite's Great Youma form? Even he had to admit he had done very little in the greater scheme of things.
"A new General Queen, though... That's not a bad outcome for us," he considered. Even if it had taken the loss of Marthozite. Damn those stupid Blood Moon senshi!
Settling himself back down, he tried to be consoling. "We got most of them back. And we'll kill those Blood Moon bitches for what they did."
It wasn't quite 'all's well that ends well'... but it could have been worse. Hiro chose to be grateful for what they did have. Most of the captives rescued, no losses in the final battle, and a General Queen for Destiny City. Despite the fact that Hiro had worked under Marthozite for as long as he could remember, there had been no senshi in Africa, corrupt or otherwise. It hadn't been the most fulfilling position, nothing compared to partnering Alkaid, or training the other corrupt senshi here in Destiny City. Hiro... wasn't displeased with how things had turned out for him.

"That sounds about right," she said with a small grimace. She shifted around beneath the blanket someone had found for her until she could get her arms free and settled on top of it. They were sore and stiff, but she knew the only way to cure that was going to be using them properly. First duty: reaching out to rub Hiro's head so he felt better about not being so useful.
"You were helpful to me when I needed you, that's all that counts." It was meant to make him feel better. Kaia knew he was at a disadvantage when it came to battles but he'd been there for her despite all of that. He wasn't hiding somewhere behind the scenes with his tail tucked between his legs, like Astraea.
"General Queen Tanzanite," she said softly, shutting her eyes and just stroking her fingers through the soft fur of Hiro's back. "We all make sacrifices, Marthozite just made the ultimate sacrifice of all. I'm sure whatever greater power exists rewarded him for that." She wasn't really a person of great faith, but she had to believe there was something out there that rewarded the great, fallen soldiers who fought so valiantly for their home.
Her eyes opened again as he mentioned the BMC, and they narrowed at a space on the wall that had once held a small, oval hanging mirror. "But you're right, we'll teach those sorry brats a lesson in manners soon enough, if any of them are brave enough to show their faces after that."

The headrub and the compliment had Hiro purring loudly once more. It didn't matter so much what Kaia said, so much that she wanted to cheer him up at all. He snuggled in closer. Best senshi ever!
Being helpful when Kaia needed him? That was all he needed. As long as Hiro could do that much, he was happy. She deserved to have someone looking out for her. All the corrupted senshi did, but most especially his Kaia.
"I'm sure he believed he would live on through Tanzanite's actions," Hiro agreed. If there was anyone who could live up to Marthozite's legacy of taking over an entire continent, it would definitely be Tanzanite. She was more of a boogeyman to the senshi than even Beryl herself - understandable since Tanzanite had been out there hunting them down. But for the senshi to know that their nemesis was now the most powerful agent of the Negaverse in Destiny City? Their moral must surely be suffering.
Hiro chuckled when Kaia question if the BMC would be brave enough to show themselves anytime soon. "I do wonder. The person they tortured and tried to kill is suddenly in command of Destiny City's Negaverse, not to mention more powerful than ever. I'd be lying low for quite some time, if I were them."
Of course, Hiro doubted they were that clever. They seemed to think they were invincible, carrying out such a brazen plot against the Negaverse. No doubt their leader, Ares, would refuse to hide away. How helpful, considering she was the one they most wanted to kill.

Kaia simply lay there as she thought about Marthozite, whose power had lived on through Tanzanite. She wasn't one to believe in things like fate or destiny, but even she could admit that what had taken place between the dying General King and their new General Queen had been nothing less than a modern world wonder. A bittersweet one, but still beautiful.
"Tanzanite will honor him," she nodded in agreement to her own statement, lazily stroking the space between Hiro's ears as she did so, "I have no doubt that she will." She didn't even question Tanzanite's skill or abilities, she was as sure of her that as she was the General Queen's loyalty and honor. If anyone would see an end to this war, it would be her.
"I think they're too bold, to be honest," she drew a deep breath that stretched the stiff muscles of her abdomen, then blew it out loudly. "I think they will try to retaliate, immediately, because that leader of theirs isn't anywhere near cautious enough." She glanced down at Hiro then, pressing her lips into a thin line at the thought.
"The only good thing is that they won't be able to escape us now, every one of us knows who she is, we all know her face. Not to mention a few other important ones." She shifted her legs experimentally, grimacing slightly as the pins and needles erupted into one foot. She felt like she had been run over by trucks or something, she was so sore.

Hiro nodded at Kaia's words. The little he'd seen of Tanzanite so far had been very impressive. She was a strong woman, and very dedicated to the Negaverse. She'd protected those under her as best she could, even in the face of imprisonment and torture. Best of all, she cared for her senshi just as much as she cared for the regular officers. Hiro would follow her for that alone, if nothing else.
"Very few of us are cautious enough," Hiro said. It had been the Negaverse to be captured originally by the Blood Moon Court, after all. "We are simply better organised."
It was a problem that Hiro wanted to drill out of his senshi and officer trainees. Rushing in where fools feared to tread could remain the domain of the White Moon. Hiro wanted his children to be cautious, to be devious. To stay safe, even while striking down their enemies. A hopeless dream, perhaps. But if he could make them even the slightest bit more sensible, or even just the better warriors for when they and the White Moon clashed, then Hiro would have done his job well.
"We shall have to see. It was an intelligent enough plan, their capture. Perhaps they will be equally intelligent and realise we are expecting them to strike again." It would depend on how they saw the final fallout - did those senshi view it as a success, a failure, a learning experience? It would depend on whether calmer voices could temper the 'too bold' Ares.
Everyone knew Ares, that much was true. Hiro wasn't quite satisfied with that, though. "We should know all of their faces," he complained. "If they're trying to lay a trap, they won't lead with her. We need to know all of them, be able to target them and pick them off if any of them are spotted, not just their leader."

She frowned as Hiro pointed out that the Negaverse, too, was too bold and not cautious enough. She would have liked to argue, say that they were better, but in her heart she knew it to be true. If Tanzanite's last words hadn't sent her from the battlefield, she would have been captured with the captains and lieutenants in an effort to save her. Or worse. She didn't want to know what the BMC would do to her, especially not after what Nemesis alone had nearly done.
That thought alone made her face turn pale and she sat up a little too quickly in an attempt to hide it from Hiro. The muscles in her back and stomach protested and she had to grit her teeth to prevent herself from groaning out loud. Pain blossomed in a bruise over her left shoulder blade, easily seen through the thin, strapless shirt she was wearing. It was a violent shade of purple and black, barely muted by the white fabric, and as large as her splayed hand. Only hours into the night before, that bruise had been the spot of an open wound - one that Nemesis had been trying to pull her heart through.
"It was a victory for them, in some ways. They lowered our numbers as much as we did their own, they got information out of us that could be dangerous for our safety, and most of all.." She drew a deep breath as she paused and brought her hands up to her face, as if she were rubbing away sleep but instead it was simply meant to try and hold back her emotions. "Most of all, maybe their biggest accomplishment, is that they put fear in our hearts. We know the things they are capable of now, the lengths they'll go to, and we haven't had to deal with that from any senshi before them."
As she wound down, her voice softened and even wavered, but she remained steady with her back to Hiro and her eyes roaming the apartment ahead of her. An apartment that was suspiciously void of mirrors.

Kaia's gritting of her teeth against the pain as she sat up didn't escape Hiro's notice. He was very careful of where he placed his paws and where he leaned as he moved to Kaia's side. His touch was light and brief as he rubbed his head against her shoulder, rumbling loudly.
The bruises covering his senshi worried the feline. Knowing that there was nothing he could do was the worst feeling in the world. He couldn't bandage her wounds or carry her if she was hurt... sometimes Hiro - as marvellous and amazing as he knew he was - just felt useless.
"Perhaps it's better than we fear them a little," Hiro suggested. "It may give our new recruits the caution they need to survive, to grow more powerful and therefore be able to live through a battle with this Blood Moon lot."
Not that there weren't other dangers out there, just as bad. Rumour said one of the senshi had revealed themselves to be loyalty - not the fabled Moon Princess, thank goodness, just a boy. But he'd also managed to 'purify' Linarite somehow. Rumour said Tanzanite was furious - Hiro wasn't about to go ask her if that was true or not. But the point was that there were other things to fear out there. They needed to be more careful than ever.
"Perhaps we should let it be known exactly what this Blood Moon group are like," Hiro suggested. The tip of her tail started twitching back and forth, plans half forming in his mind. "I can't imagine that the other senshi would be very happy to hear what some of their fellows are up to..."
Mmm, internal strife. Maybe someone else would take down the BMC for the Negaverse.

She was silly to think she could hide anything from Hiro, but she'd tried. Regardless of her failure she still smiled as he moved to rub his head gently against her side. If she hadn't been so sore, and he hadn't been such a large cat, she would have picked him up and put him in her lap to pet. Cats were comfort, even if this one was capable of giving her a piece of his mind.
"You're right, the new recruits will no not to plunge into this headlong, but fear can be just as crippling as it can be helpful." She narrowed her eyes on something unseen, an empty space that she was focusing her attention on so her thoughts would flow more freely. She seemed troubled but that should have been unsurprising - the Negaverse had just suffered an awful blow and it was just like her to think she had to shoulder all of it on her own. "We have to make sure we start recruiting courageous soldiers, ones that can overcome that fear. I don't even know if some of ours can do that now."
She stretched her arm out and set a hand on Hiro's head, stroking his slick fur idly. "It's.. possible. They're so disorganized, though, even the teams. There's no Tanzanite to put them all in their place." She shook her head at the idea, though she wished as much as Hiro did that it was possible. "They might frown at her, but I don't know if any of them have the gall to stand up to Ares. She's like a wildfire that sweeps everything up without warning." She knew, she'd fought her, and she'd lost her.
A long, tired sigh fluttered out of her lips and she drew her gaze away from the nothingness to focus on the apartment once more. "Have you seen my phone anywhere, Hiro?"

He might not be able to sit in her lap right now, but Hiro kept close. He made his presence obvious, touching and warming as much as he could. All the while, he kept up a loud, steady rumble. Kaia wouldn't think she was alone for a moment, as long as Hiro was around.
"Well, I'm a very good trainer," Hiro suggested. Very modestly, of course. (Not.) "I'm sure I could whip the cowardly ones into shape."
If only he had opposable thumbs, he would do that quite literally. Alas (or rather, luckily for all the potential trainees).
"Phone, phone..." Hiro narrowed his eye. He had a vague memory of... aha! He leapt of the couch, disappearing from sight. A minute later, he trotted back, a slim phone held delicately between his teeth. He dropped it onto the couch beside Kaia and gagged a little (while wiping cat spit off the screen with one surreptious swipe of his paw). "Phone," he announced proudly.

Kaia laughed gently at Hiro's false modesty, perhaps the first positive sound from her since she'd woken up from the nightmare of her night. Even if Hiro was a little full of himself, he still knew how to make her smile. She was finding that it was nice to have someone around that could make her laugh in the middle of the whirlwind that had been her life for months.
"I know you could," she commented softly, with a smile that showed just how endeared she was and a small little scratch right behind his ear.
As he wandered off to help her locate the phone she couldn't remember seeing last, she took the moment to attempt stretching out her arms and legs. A bad idea, perhaps, because the second she started she wished she could just curl back up in bed and sleep the pain off. She'd wanted the phone for a reason though, the same reason that was propelling her to start moving again.
"You found that fast," the surprise in her voice was genuine, "thank you." She leaned down and pressed a very soft kiss between his ears as a reward, then gave him one lingering pat as she flipped the phone open and scrolled through the contacts she barely ever used. There it was, she had the number she was looking for.
"I need to start figuring out who needs my help this morning, are you alright to find breakfast on your own?" Hurt and healing, but she was still trying to look out for others at the same time. Not even a war with giant, mythical beasts could dissuade her from her true nature.

There was a surprised chirp-purr when Kaia kissed between his ears. It settled into a very loud rumble, Hiro looking very pleased with himself. It was normally him smooching others, but if Kaia wasnt to return the favour, Hiro wasn't about to complain. Not even when breakfast was no longer on offer.
"I'll survive," Hiro said wryly. He could scavenge something from the kitchen, or perhaps go and mooch off one of the others he trained when Kaia was busy.
"Do you need any help?" he made sure to check first. Kaia was his first, main priority, after all.

She smiled at him when he took the news of no home cooked breakfast so well. Sometimes he could be a little difficult, but he knew when something really mattered and that was all that was important to her. Out of all the cats she could recall, she was certainly pleased that the cosmic forces had given her this one.
"No, I should be alright to do this on my own." She was about to press 'send' on her phone, but seemed to remember something at the last second and turned back to look at him again.
"Do you think you could do a little scouting around today, Hiro? You know, dig up whatever information you can find on everyone? Who is hurt, who needs help, who doesn't. Find out what you can about everything that happened?" She pressed her lips together in an awkward smile, trying to look as calm as she could. Truth was, she wanted to know what was going on now that they'd put an end to that torture camp, but she knew she needed to concentrate her efforts on helping others first.
"I can't be everywhere at once, but it's important."
