Though this wasn't the first time Fei Yen had left the glen his family called home, it was the first time he had done so without the watchful eyes of the sister who raised him, while momma struggled to overcome sadness, the sister he adored and sought to emulate to the best of his abilities. But he wasn't Ro, didn't have the gregarious nature and absolute joy that made her so special. If anything, he was the opposite of her. Somewhat distant, more prone to periods of silence and living inside his head.
Though he was loved, no one in the family understood him. He was just too different. And that was the reason he had made his way to the meadow, far from the weight he felt when he was home. A gentle spring breeze blew, and he stopped. Simply letting it ruffle his rather unkempt braid and causing the sleeves of his shirt to billow out around him. Standing still, he watched with interest.
It was the little things like this, the silence, scent, sound and sight of things that are so small that most take for granted, that made him happiest. For a moment, his eyes slipped closed and he simply let himself be.

Her bell jingled to the tempo of her steps and heavy hoof falls as she walked towards the tree line that she knew opened up into the meadow. It wasn't anything in particular that she was looking for.. She just wanted to set and watch the meadow for a while, see what came and went. Drawing nearer, she settled into the shade of a large tree and edged around it so that she was on the meadow side of it. It made a rather decent spot to sit and watch.. or would have had she not accidentally stepped in an ant den.
Ouch those things did bite and annoy one's legs.. Stamping, she finally gave in and left her shade and entered the meadow. Her coat was fluffy, shaggy almost much like that of her fathers. In fact she was even big like him.. and he was big for a draft.. The only things she seemed to really favor her mother in was her coloring and her eyes.

The wind carried on it a soft sound unlike any he had heard before, and an unfamiliar scent. He reluctantly opened his eyes, giving in to the sense of curiousity that prompted him to learn about anything and everything. Damn his curiosity anyway!
He turned to towards the sound, and was greeted with a rather unusual sight. There was a rather impressive mare that seemed to be ... dancing, perhaps? He was too far away to properly tell, so he moved closer.
His eyes widened when he noticed the remnants of an ant den. He winced in sympathy pain. Ouch. So it wasn't a dance, per say. It was an attempt to get rid of those pesky... things.
"Do you need some help there?" He asked when he got within a short distance. He stopped. He did not want to invade the stranger's space or get too close to the swarming insects, unless his offer of aid was accepted. He couldn't just stand there and not offer some assistance. It just wasn't in his nature.

She couldn't have known he was talking to her, still she stamped her hooves and pranced in order to rid herself of the last of the clinging ants. Her legs would itch for days after this she just knew it.. She'd have to find some sort of plant to ease them later at least.
It was when her flailing about ended that she had gotten the last angry ant off her and she turned to notice some one was there. Blinking, she offered him a silly looking lop sided smile, her ears hiving a fluttering wiggle as she greeted this stranger. Suchluck she'd had, two new soquilli in the same week.

It didn't bother Fei when the mare didn't acknowledge his offer to help. Truth be told, he was rather glad not to have to. He felt a twinge of guilt in his conscience. Ok, so it wasn't the fact he didn't have to help, so much as the fact he wasn't required to deal with the ants. He rather disliked their sting, and went out of his way to avoid them whenever he could.
He shrugged, and waited until the mare had finished removing the ants before trying to approach again. The fluttering ears and lopsided grin confused the young stallion, when no words or explanation followed. Just what was that about?
"Hello." He greeted the mare. Hoping that perhaps she was just somewhat slow, and an answer to his confusion and curiousity would be forth-coming.

She nodded acknowledging the greeting she saw from his mouth and still smiling, she mouthed back to him a 'Hello'. No sound accompanied her words though she was sure to have made the mouthing of the word clear.. at least she thought she had....
The trouble with not hearing was she couldn't control the volume of her voice so she rarely ever spoke unless she just needed to. She just hoped that this stallion wouldn't get too frustrated with her use of body language over speech like so many others had. Sure there were those small number of soquili that had actually tried to understand what she'd been trying to get across, but most just got irritated and walked away.

At first, Fei Yen was confused when he saw the mare's lips moving but heard no sound. Then, after a moment, he realised that she was somehow handicapped. He wasn't sure if she was mute or deaf, but either way, it made no difference to him. He was used to dealing with similar things. His mother, after all, was a healer. So he had run across those particular problems before.
Normally, this would be a sign for him to leave. He had limited patience for dealing with others at the best of times. But today, he was bored, there was nothing waiting for him at home, so he decided to stick around, and at least attempt to have a conversation, or what passed for a conversation with the mare, so he gathered what patience he could and decided to figure out which was her issue.
'I don't mean to be rude,'he started, realising that no matter what, he would sound as such, but he was hoping his lack of manners wouldn't be too off-putting,'but are you deaf or just unable to speak?'
He tried to clearly annunciate knowing that she would have to read his lips, either way.

She offered a smile and thought just how to answer as it wasn't just a straight yes or now question. Many times she'd just wiggle her ears about and shake her head indicating the loss of hearing but after spending the day with a rather chatty fellow, she sighed and concentrated on just not yelling. "Deaf." On word slips out at a whisper. Whispering was much better than yelling even f she had to repeat herself. She wasn't offended with his forward bluntness, actually she found it refreshing compared to the many times others just stomped off or continued to just assume she just refused to speak out of rudeness. "I'm Idonea." She offered her name at yet another whisper, a friendly, goofy lopsided grin accompanying her voice. She didn't sound horse, or dainty or raspy.. she had a thicker voice to her, one befitting her size, with that feminine undertone to it. No she wasn't masculine sounding, her voice was much more like... molasses given a sound.

Deaf. Well wasn't that just peachy? Of the two handicaps, he would have preferred to meet someone who was mute. It would have been less for him to deal with. One who was only mute could hear tone and inflection, which was how he expressed himself most of the time. He had been told numerous times that his body had a tendency to lie. Great. He would have to make an actual effort. He sighed. Well, he had been bored, though this wasn't what he had in mind when looking for change.
He tilted his head as he heard her whisper. So she hadn't always been deaf. Otherwise, she wouldn't have any grasp of volume or how words were supposed to sound. That would make this less of a trial than it could have been.
So her name was Idonea. 'Nice to meet you.' He spoke just a little slower than he normally would, hoping to make it easier for her to read his lips so he wouldn't be forced to repeat himself. 'I'm Fei.'
He decided to shorten his name for ease of communication. Fei, he cringed slightly. It sounded like a female's name when shortened, but there was no help for it. His mother named him, and there was no telling just what she had been thinking or whatever, when he and his sis were born.
Then he considered Ro, and figured at least his name was better. And he thanked his lucky stars.

She smiled and nodded. "Pleased to meet you Fei" She smiled warmly. Her fluffy build was a bit odd making her look shaggier and more... boyish at first but really it didn't bother her.n His name sounded a bit..... feminine to her but she figured perhaps he was shortening it? At least for now she'd give him the better benefit of the doubt. "How do you fair?" It was a polite form of conversation.. Her father was often friendly with strangers and had instilled in her some of the same qualities with her up bringing.

For one who was deaf, her speech was fairly clear, if heavily slurred, and he had to pay less attention than he would have thought in order to figure out what she was saying. Though her mode of speech was far more formal than he was used to. Although he had learned.
'It is a pleasant day,' he thought back to his lessons and tried to recall the formal speech patterns. He had never been overly fond of them, thinking it made one sound... fake, at best.' And I fare well. How about you?'
He cringed. Nope. No more formal speech for him. He would speak the way he felt most comfortable, regardless. Then he felt ashamed. He was uncomfortable with formal speaking, but how much more uncomfortable was she, speaking out loud when it must be very difficult, and a reminder of her handicap.
'Please, if it is easier for you, I do know how to read lips and some body language. You don't need to speak out loud on my account.'

She smiled and looked to the sky taking in that which now surrounded them. She nodded in agreement with him about the pleasantness of the day it was rather a nice day even if her legs still held the dull itching sting from the ants. She opened her mouth to talk once more but closed it as she shuffled her front hooves to cause her bell to jingle in answer to how she fared.. She was doing well and was happy to let him know from the happy jingle. It wasn't that it was a painful reminder for her to talk.. she just.. didn't talk much if at all.. say for that time a few days before...

Fei was a good, kind-hearted stallion beyond the rather gruff and somewhat distant facade, a fact he would vehemently deny if anyone even suggested such a thing, but he was no mind-reader. It was a stretch for him to even attempt to read another's body language, that required an effort, and an empathy he was unaccustomed to giving.
So his offer to Idonea was for him uncommon, near unprecedented. He had no way of knowing that it wasn't painful for her to speak, he simply thought he was doing her a kindness.
Her nod and the jingle of the bells were fairly universal gestures, and thus really needed no real interpretation. Something for which he was grateful. He had the feeling that it would only get more difficult the longer he spent with the mare.
'So, ah, what brings you here to the meadows?'

She glanced about the meadow as though just watching around distantly. She enjoyed just watching others most the time or even just setting aside and watching the other animals the crept into the meadow to play. "Just watching" She finally whispered. How better to tell some one else she'd just been interested in watching the passers by. She glanced back to him. "You don't see many like me do you.. deaf..." She was being blunt. it wasn't that she was angry or deaf, she was just sure.. that few soquili had ever had to deal with a deaf mare before.

Watching... that did not sound all that interesting to him, but then, he had not had to deal with a handicap that would set him apart from most everyone else anyway.
He felt a guilty twinge at her question. Perhaps it was rude to expect conversation, and really he didn't know exactly how to deal with one like her, he was out of his depth. 'I...not many. I have at least seen a few.' His voice was soft. ' Most of my family are healers, so I have seen and tangentally met soquili with many different problems.'
That wasn't to say he had much to do with any of them. He just didn't have the patience or the correct nature to deal with it. And as such, he hadn't the first clue of how he should act, and what was proper or considered taboo, with the mare.
'I'm sorry. I guess, I'm just not good at this.'
