Mashuhuri's quiet footsteps could be heard in the distance and it was clear that he had been restless. Things had been quiet. A little too quiet for his liking and days seemed to blur together. Sleep and hunt. He had grown tired of the territory that he had established for himself and felt that it was time for him to move on. So he began to travel wherever his paws would take him. He had covered miles and miles of land in the past few days and he had no idea where he was now. Though he was glad that he was finally free and even though he was exhausted, Mashuhuri was much happier now than he was a few days ago.

He hadn't seen a soul in some time and he was beginning to wonder where in the world he was at this point. There didn't seem to be much life and that was just an indication that this area might be lacking in prey or water. Or he could be stumbling upon pride or pack lands but he wouldn't know until he encountered a scout. Mashuhuri continued on his way keeping a wary eye out for anything.

Elera was trotting along on her route she'd established for herself. It was well beyond the borders the guards patrolled, but well within the buffer zone that had inadvertantly been established beyond the pride's lands. This was often where she met stray rogues. Lions were warned off, and non-lions were warned but invited to stay, to find a place of belonging with the pride. She found it easy to extol the virtues of the pride, having come in as a rogue herself.

But today her mind was not on her job, but on her children. Both litters of them, really, but her own litter the most. They were growing swiftly, no longer the tiny balls of fur they'd been when she'd brought them back. But it wasn't exactly affection that distracted the leopardess' mind today. It was regret.

She had known from the start that she was not going to enjoy motherhood, and had felt justified upon finding this entirely true. When they'd arrived at the pridal den area finally, she had gladly handed the young ones off to the nannies and left. Surprisingly Piera had been silent about it, though she gave Elera many reproachful looks. She was grateful for the bird's restraint, for she was finding her own conscience was giving her a hard enough time as it was.

She tried repeatedly to remind herself of the squalling, the crying, the exhaustion of tending first one, then another, and never having any time to herself. Despite this, though, she found herself missing the little voices, the eight warm bodies snuggled against hers at night, and the sweet little joys that occasionally happened. Had she done right, basically giving them up to the nannies? Should she make it up somehow? And how would she be involved with them, without burying herself in their needs? Or was that part of becoming a mother?

Confused, distressed, and somewhat growly at being so torn, she stalked along, eyes on the ground rather than at the area around her. She did not see the stranger that padded into view, did not hear his quiet footfalls. Her tail lashed behind her, and she could be heard arguing with herself in a low voice, nearly a snarl that was laced with an oddly vulnerable unhappiness. Something was not right in her life, but she had no idea how to make this right.

Mashuhuri's life seemed to be at a stand still recently and he wasn't getting any younger. Soon, he realized that he would be old and alone before he even got the chance to do anything about it. Though it seemed like nothing was working the way it was supposed to...

Even though he was enveloped in his thoughts, the leopard saw her from a distance away and he crouched low in the grass wondering what she was doing out here. There didn't seem to be small game anywhere within a five mile radius so it would be pointless to hunt here. Watching her carefully, Mashuhuri was confused when he realized that she was talking to herself. Her snarl completely caught him off guard and he jumped back returning the snarl.

"Hey! hey! I don't mean any harm!" Was she actually snarling at him or something else? Masuhuri really didn't mean to scare her but hopefully she wouldn't attack him. Violence wasn't something that he liked to resort to unless absolutely necessary.

She was caught completely and utterly off-guard, which was hard to do. All four paws extended claws deep into the earth, rooting her in place and her fur stood on end all along her spine and her eyes became all pupil at the stranger. What was... wait... what?? She bared her teeth in a returning hiss at his shouting at her, but did not move other than that, while her mind raced to catch up with events.

What he said sank in, as she also noted he made no further aggressive moves. He had thought she was... attacking him? Her body posture began to relax and her ears unfolded slowly. "There seems to be some misunderstanding," she growled softly, not quite ready to give up her defensive attitude yet, and keeping a hefty rein on her temper. If he'd thought she was snarling at him, then this was entirely her fault, whether he had overreacted or not. Heavens knew, the Queen would not be pleased to hear she'd driven a potential member off by being surly. "I think you have mistaken my mumblings as meant for you." Her tail lashed behind her fiercely, and her claws remained extnded, but the rest of her muscles were uncoiling slowly. Time to put her personal problems aside and focus on being the scout instead of... well, whatever she was to the two litters of cubs she'd brought home.

Mashuhuri was not a violent leopard at all but being a loner, he knew how to defend himself. He didn't mean to snarl at her but she had caught him off guard! Relaxing slightly as she did, Mashuhuri observed her carefully and made note of her stature and any possible signs of aggression though it seemed like any danger had passed. She seemed to be alone... or was he just getting too old to be able to keep up with the younger generations?

Eyeing her carefully, the leopard nodded at her comment. "Yes, it seems like there has been a misunderstanding. Forgive me, I've never been this far out and it makes me a little jumpy to be in a foreign place. Are you from around here?" It was hard to tell but she seemed relatively comfortable so she must have a home somewhere around.

She took a deep breath, further calming herself, sheathing her claws and unpinning her ears. This was her job now, and she should do it to the best of her ability. After all, the pride needed strong new members such as this male. She swallowed to clear the last of her private feelings, then nodded.

"Yes, this is the edge of the territory claimed by the Kitwana'antara," she answered more normally, her fur smoothing as her expression changed to one of interest in the other leopard. "We are a mixed pride, with all species welcomed." This was the part she always debated on how to present, and she did take a moment to ponder now. "I found the pride much as you are now, but I was greeted by one of the sick ones." She let that sink in, trying to gauge his reaction. "The lions of this pride need help bearing a terrible disease. They are a determined people, and hold up well, despite their difficulties."

It wasn't a rehearsed speech, though it might have sounded like one. Interpersonal skills were not her strongest, so she sounded a little stiff. Still, she scanned his face with hope of seeing some flicker of understanding or sympathy for the pride she'd chosen to align herself with. Was he of the right sort to join this odd collection of sick and healthy beasts? But as she examined his face, she felt a ripple of something else in the back of her mind. With a mental growl and shrug, she shoved the feelings back. Now was not the time for more confusing emotions to muddle things up.
