Kaede walked slowly over the hills toward the territory frequented by the Burning Sun Clan. The last spring rain was falling around her mournfully, as if to represent her own loneliness and pain. She needed Laminira badly, right now, even if Lami scolded her for what she'd done. She could rely on Lami when times got bad...right?
She'd been a fool, a naive, lovesick fool to fall for the greatest of Moloch's sons, Evander. Not only had he tricked her into falling for him and bearing him foals, oh, no. He'd revealed his deception once the foals were born and stolen them away. Evander had stolen her beautiful babies, her hope for happiness in this world.
She paused at a puddle and gazed at it, willing it to show her visions of her lost darlings. Her pink daughter with pure white eyes and a flaming mane and tail, and her earthy son with his chromatic mane and tail and chromatic leaves. Tears slid down her cheeks as the image of her babies seemed to dance before her eyes before skittering away as the rain splashed through the fleeting images, just as Prince Evander of the Shadow Herd had trampled on her heart. By the time she got to the place where Lami would be on patrol, she was openly weeping, albeit silently.

It had been some time since Lami had last seen Kaede. Now that the rains were gone and the grass began to settle into its summery gold color, the champion was starting to wonder where her friend was. The color of the grass reminded her of her dear friend's mane, and the sweet smell of wildflowers reminded her of conversations around the pond, of smiles and soft reassurances of friendship for someone who clearly needed it. It's such a lovely day and I don't have a patrol until late this afternoon, she thought to herself. I wonder where you are?
She was getting a little desperate for interaction outside of their clan. While she was enjoying training far more than she expected--the smooth flow of muscles as she learned how to fight, sparring back and forth with her friends--and the games they played when they weren't so seriously occupied, Lami was starting to get lonely for faces she didn't see so much. It didn't help that Sepaia was on edge. She doesn't even know why she's so worried, she shouldn't be taking it out on us if she's so upset! the pink-maned mare thought in a surprisingly cross way. We certainly shouldn't have to be picking up training so much.
It was in this mood--wanting to get out and talk with someone who didn't think everything came down to fighting--that she went down to the pond with its attending groves of sycamores and oaks to think, and, hopefully, to catch her druidess friend.

Finally, Kaede rose to the crest of the hill above the pond where she'd befriended Lami. Looking down, she saw her friend. A sob welled up in her throat and she plunged down the hill at a full gallop, her silent weeping becoming gasping sobs as she reached the bottom. For once, Kaede didn't care about the mud she was kicking up. Friends when times were bad were much more important than a little mud.
"Laaammmiii~!" she cried as she got to the pond and skidded to a halt, fully crying now. She didn't know what else to say right now, even if she could have spoken through the sobs wracking her body.

Lami knew something was wrong when she heard a broken wail from over the crest of the hill. Flipping her damp forelock out of her face, she watched in shock as Kaede charged down the hill, mud flying from her frantic footfalls. A few minutes ago, Lami would have imagined the storybook situation--think of the person, and the person appears--with a smile of whimsy and a brief daydream, even if she was supposed to be on patrol. Whimsy, however, had no place anywhere when a friend was so clearly in pain. Lami raced over to Kaede, nuzzling her neck gently in a comforting way. "Kaede, Kaede," she said softly, "I'm here. It's alright. Tell me what's wrong. I'm here to listen." And she was--she could feel worry for her friend growing in her belly, but she brushed it aside to concentrate fully on the pain her friend was going through.

Kaede nuzzled her friend, still crying. "I--I--I--" But the words wouldn't come, so great was her sorrow. She'd finally found something in this world to love, only to have it stripped from her.
No, that wasn't entirely true, was it? Lami was still here with her, right? That meant not all was lost, and maybe Lami could help her. Taking a deep, soothing breath, she willed herself to go on. "I--I had foals with the son of Moloch of the Shadow Herd--I thought he couldn't be truly evil, like his father--but I was wrong--and--and--and--" she babbled in a rush. The words came out in a distorted mass, but at least she'd been able to get the words out.
But this...this was too horrible to say. Saying it would make it more true than it already was. However, she'd already promised herself she'd say it. Swallowing the next sob, she continued, "And he took them and ran! He took our babies away from me!" At this point, she was wailing, unable to control herself in her grief.

Lami felt that horrible mental pressure when words are heard that the brain does not want to hear. It was a feeling of being pushed off a cliff in slow motion, a simultaneous feeling of pressure and falling. Shock. That's what it was. She hid it away and nuzzled Kaede back instead, waiting for the words to navigate past the barriers of shock and settle into her head. The son of Moloch? How could that be? What lies did he tell her to get her like this? Oh, he will pay! Lami knew that was the part of her that was her sister's talking, but she let it talk, knowing it would never control her.
Instead, she briefly considered a conflict: continue the patrol like she was ordered to, or follow her instincts and help Kaede to someplace out of the rain where she could begin to calm down. It wasn't much of a conflict. She knew exactly what she needed to do. Brushing her tail against Kaede's legs, she turned around and guided her friend fully down the hill. "Kaede, let's get you someplace where it isn't raining so much. There's a thick stand of trees nearby where we can dry off a bit." She wasn't sure yet what to say about the...well, the news, but she knew she had to say something to acknowledge that she had heard and understood. "I sorrow for your loss, but let us talk someplace less inhospitable."

Kaede sniffled and followed her friend down the hill toward the sheltering arms of a copse of trees nearby. Having told Lami what was wrong, part of the weight of the situation lifted off of her. However, not all the pain and fear was gone. Would Lami blame her for what had happened? How was she going to deal in the ensuing weeks with what had happened, knowing that she'd been deceived, had children, and then lost them forever? These were questions she didn't know the answer to, despite being a druidess of the Sunflare Herd, and their continued existence still weighted her down.
Once under the trees, she paused and took a few deep breaths, willing herself to calm down before another fit of sobs consumed her. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she knew that this was no way to behave in front of a champion of the Burning Sun Clan of the Sunflare Herd, especially one who had been on patrol and dropped everything to talk to her. However, that knowledge was getting kicked out by the numbing pain of loss.

Lami steered Kaede into the overhanging oak trees, picking a space that was still mostly dry underneath the tallest tree. Technically, she should be patrolling, especially if the son of Moloch was nearby enough for him to steal a pair of foals. That realization burned her inside, burned her with a fierceness she'd never realized she had. Moloch's son had been close enough to kidnap children from her herd. He'd been close enough to threaten them, and the Burning Sun had been helpless to protect them. How could we let this happen? We're supposed to protect Sunflare, not wander willy-nilly while the herd is plucked off like seeds from a pod! Now the conflict inside her grew. Patrol or comfort? Patrol or comfort? She glanced at Kaede, and any inclination to leave her friend instantly dissolved. Here was another mare, one who was devastated by the ultimate loss, and she had contemplated, even for a second, abandoning her when she was needed most? I'll alert the Clan later. If Sepaia scolds me for it, I hope I can explain to her my reasoning.
She leaned against Kaede comfortingly and wrapped her tail around the druid. "Kaede, if you can, could you tell me everything that happened? You don't have to tell me anything if you don't want to, but when did he steal your children?" She needed to know how much danger the herd was in...but how could she be so disrespectful? She felt herself cringing at her own words and the, the impersonality of them.

Kaede huddled closer to Lami, trying to sort out how best to explain the situation, how far back to go. In her deeply distraught state, now wasn't the time for this, but, considering that Lami was also a champion, Lami wanted to assess the danger and such. Kaede tried to tell herself that there was no way Lami would get Kaede's dear foals back.
Taking a few more deep breaths so that she could start talking, she began at the beginning, though her voice was still broken with grief. "It--it was only a little thing. One of Mol--Moloch's sons started walking out with me, and--and--and I thought he wasn't really evil at all. As if, per--perhaps he wasn't going to follow in his father and herd's hoofprints. But--but--but, af--after the foals were born, he---he--he...he took them and left!" she sobbed, finishing the tale. "He said he wasn't--wasn't coming back, now that he had what he wanted, and now I'll--I'll never see my babies again!"

Every day their villainy increased. But while she'd spent most of her life now chasing after them, Lami was still shocked that the Shadow would stoop to such a low trick. How dare they--how dare they?! But she pushed back her outrage. Outrage wouldn't help her hurt, mourning friend, who so desperately needed comfort. "Kaede, I'm, I'm so, so sorry that this had to happen to you." She nuzzled the other mare in an attempt at comfort. "Kaede, if there's anything I can do. Anything at all to comfort you, just let me know. You're worth a lot. You're worth so much, and if I could find that good-for-nothing cockroach, I'd squish him myself." She knew she was babbling, but to be honest, she had no idea how to react, what to do to offer her nearest, dearest friend some words of comfort in this time. "If we can get your babies back, we will. I promise you, Kaede, you'll see your babies again." And she meant it. She meant every word of it. Maybe what she was saying wasn't the right thing, but she said it with sincerity. It was all she could do at the moment.

Kaede felt a sort of faint relief wash through her at Lami's babbling words. Of course Lami wouldn't push her away. Of course Lami would stand by her. Of course Lami would do everything she could to help and support her. The relief mixed with the continuing grief added onto the tears, and Kaede buried her face in her best friend's mane, careful not to accidentally stab her with her horn.
Kaede couldn't speak for the welter of emotions filling her and the tears she shed. All she could do was give a nod into Lami's neck and hope she understood. Straightening herself up a bit, she reached her head around to pull Lami into a close, tight sort of hug, rubbing the side of her head into her friend's back and side. Finally, she sniffled, "Thanks, Lami."

Lami shifted a tiny bit on her hooves as the other mare buried her face in her mane. The long horn resting on top of her neck was almost comforting, a tiny bit. It was a sign that she was doing this right. She held no illusions that Kaede would get over this easily; in fact, she'd be a bit surprised if Kaede did recover from this easily. She'd been heartbroken, and now she'd lost some of her dearest loved ones. There could be no full recovery from this, not that she could see. But by Aquarius, she'd try to heal her friend! How, she hadn't yet figured out, but it probably involved getting those foals back.
What she had figured out was that she wasn't comfortable leaving Kaede alone, not in this state. She knew that the druidess didn't belong to a clan, but she needed somewhere to stay that would be safe and full of loving people to remind her of what a good, cherished person she was. She returned the neck-hug and murmured, "Kaede, would you like to stay with Burning Sun tonight? I know champions may not be your preferred company, but please, join us tonight. You need some company."

Something lifted a little further in Kaede's heart over Lami's offer. The quiet, autumnal Arcturus druidess hadn't yet picked a clan to belong to, but the offer from her dear, dear friend was a welcome invitation. Quite honestly, Kaede didn't have reason to belong to the Royal Sun Clan, she didn't feel at home with the Beautiful Sun Clan, especially as inactive as it was, and she normally didn't feel comfortable with the Burning Sun Clan. However, given her experiences with Evander and the loss of her children...the warmth and fire and protective supportiveness of the Burning Sun Clan appealed to her.
Kaede could belong somewhere in this world, even more so than before.
Slowly, the tiniest hint of a smile was born on the gentle mare's face, even as the rain started dropping back to a drizzle, and the light shifted, hinting at the first rays of sunlight threatening to burst through the clouds. "Thank you, Lami. I'll stay with you and the Burning Sun. I'll join it, too." After all, if the rain could end, the sun shine and produce a rainbow, was it not possible that Kaede's grief could end, love be found, and new happiness and family born?
(I think this is a good place to finish up this RP, and I think this will be my final post, if that's OK with you. ^^; )

elfstar89 (I think this is a good place to finish up this RP, and I think this will be my final post, if that's OK with you. ^^; ) ((I think that looks good!)) The rain was letting up, allowing hopeful rays of sunshine to pour in through the cloud layer. It was like a benediction; and high above them, in the boundless vaults of sky, a rainbow shimmered into being. The new sunlight glinting through the lingering raindrops on Kaede's mane gave the druidess a halo. She'd never looked more beautiful. Lami smiled and nuzzled her beloved friend. Kaede? Join their clan permanently? Her heart felt like it would burst. "Thank you," she whispered. "I hope we can make you happy, Kaede. You deserve to be happy." She leaned against the other mare's side and led her to the warmth of her new clan.
