Kizzy Curlyfoot covered her eyes and looked up at the sky. The sun was at zenith, which indicated it was noon. The light made her squint, which led to a grumble. The day didn't start out particularly nice to the halfling. She woke up late only to find that her watch broke and she had appointment with someone important later that day. To make it worse, she didn't have a set of clean clothes to change into, because she got in late the other night and now she was squeezing through large crowds way to the other side of town. No, Kizzy Curlyfoot was not happy at all.
After half an hour, Kizzy finally arrived to her destination. A building, which at first glance looked like many others. A sign over the door said 'Gustave & Co. Attorney'. Kizzy knew this was no ordinary attorney. Gustave handled it all, he was the man you went to when you had problems, and he would fix them. Like your cheating wife would suddenly start worshipping you again, and her lover was heard from no more. Or those greedy relatives of yours who defied your father's will, suddenly give you your half of the land and riches. And this man, Gustave, happened to be this halfling's partner and supplier.
She knocked on the door a few times and stepped aside. Gustave would usually have one of his servants in charge of answering the door, and none of them really liked Kizzy. In a moment or so, the door opened, and behind it stood a young human.
"Miss Curlyfoot, here to see Master Gustave I assume?" He asked.
"Well I definitely didn't come to ask you out on a date, Markus." The halfling teased the man. And to her amusement, it seemed to work as the man frowned lightly.
"He's in his office." The young servant said, trying to hide his fret.
"Trying to get rid of me so soon?" Kizzy spoke as she stepped inside, smiling in amusement. "Don't worry, Markus. I won't bother you any more. I have business here."
The man named Markus just sighed and disappeared into one of the rooms, leaving Kizzy on her own. The halfling just smirked, she did enjoy toying with Gustave's staff, in fact, she rather enjoyed toying with anyone if she had the chance. She walked to the end of the corridor and knocked on a door. A muffled 'come in' reached her tiny ears. Kizzy opened the door with a light creak and saw a man in his late fifties sitting behind a redwood desk, completely covered in books and paperwork. The man seemed to have just finished writing something when the halfling stepped into his office.
"Ah, Kizzy Curlyfoot. About time you showed up. Fashionably late or not, it is still a rude gesture. You were supposed to be here about an hour ago." The lawyer spoke while wiping his glasses with a cloth.
The halfling scowled as she took a seat in one of the free chairs she saw.
"Don't give me any of that. I've had a horrible enough day as it is. Can we just get down to what I came here for?"
The old lawyer sighed, putting the glasses back on and leaning back in his chair.
"Very well then. I believe you heard the big news. The emperor had declared, that all magic is dangerous and anyone found practising it should be executed without mercy. Now, personally, I think that is a very harsh move, as magic can be most useful. But even I can not defy the Emperor himself, so we might as well make a krones out of this."
Kizzy listened carefully, while picking at an annoying spot on her trousers.
"Here's your new mission." Gustave continued. "There is this certain person, who's a figure head amongst the magic community. This person always seemed to keep neutral and stay out of things, but with this new law out, I have a feeling that won't last long, thus making him a potential threat. Your job is to find him and eliminate him."
Kizzy the halfling suddenly sat up straight and stared at her partner.
"Now, if I get this straight, you want me to go on a blind hunt for a mage?"
"Not exactly blind, Kizzy. I'm nearly done gathering all the info I can about this person. You should come back in a day or two, and I will give you a complete list and new gear, which I'm sure you will find most useful."
The last bit made the halfling bounty hunter smile. If there's anything she really loved about her job, it was gadgets. She already owned quite a few, but getting new ones was always exciting.
"Alright then." She spoke. "In that case, I can't wait until our next meeting." Kizzy hopped off her chair and turned for the exit.
"Neither can I." Gustave smiled. "Neither can I."
