Recently since our school heard the government might start to cutt money from schools they began thinking who to cut for teachers because of money issues, here in Michigan. I just discovered that a teacher they want to get rid of is our schools BD, who is an amazing director and is way better than the person who has senoirity over him.

We discussed this during our class time, and everybody doesn't want him to leave what's so ever, and a senior even wrote a thank you letter for him, which made everybody start to cry (all girls).

We really don't want him to leave, or have a new teacher, because if this happens he'll move and go somewhere else.

Basically what I'm saying is that there must be someway to stop teacher cuts, because of the government is cutting the school's budget.

Well, there isn't much you can do, unfortunately. Its a shame that it comes down to this; good teachers get cut first because someone is older then them.

Last year, my band director's time was going to be cut from full 6/7 to part 3/7. As were a lot of directors and band programs in town. so, we went out and rallied for prop 100, which was supposed to raise taxes by about a penny so that we can better fund our schools and safety organizatiosn(cops, fire, etc). Our band and another, as well as a few members of various other bands, got together at an intersection towards the center of town and blasted out our fight songs, stands tunes and shows. We had band wars with the other school, our rival school. They stood on one corner, us on the other. Members from other bands and a few members of oru two bands held signs and we all wore stickers saying "save the music, vote yes for prop 100." We did that for 2-3 hours. for a last hoorah, we gathered on the corner my school was at and had both schools dms conduct a stands tune both bands had, crazy train. It was fun, and prop 100 passed(i think). While we still get threats, they aren't as common, which is good.

We are having the same problem over here. Only our band director has not yet got an official notice. What i would say mostly, is try and get parents involved. My dad is a teacher and what he says is that they don't listen to teachers or students, but they will listen to the parents. Probably not much help, but just a suggestion.

yeah well its not yet official till they see if they pass the thing for the cuts on school so we're still not sure if he'll have to leave, or be able to stay, and worse thing is is that we've been raising money to go to wisonsin, and if he's not teaching then we won't be able to go on the trip

it's sad sometimes when they get rid of somebody so good at what they do, especially when the kids love them as a teacher

I've never understood why music is the first to be cut when schools offer SO many pointless classes that won't really help anyone in the future.

They need to keep the important things like band, choir, art, etc. and get rid of the worthless electives.

I realize it still sucks for that teacher that's out of a job, but come on.
It just makes more sense in my opinion.

I know, right?

I already know what I will write my thesis on when I'm in college to be a band director: the affect music has on children. (and I'm onl a junior in hgih school haha)

I've noticed that students who have had some kind of experience in music and art at younger ages are better performing in other subjects. For example, not a single kid in the Honor Society at my school isn't in a music class, whether it be choir, musical theatre, band or orchestra.

Once in band class, towards the end of the year, we were playing this trivia game. Our bd would say soemthin and we would have to answer the question. He would stuff like "257 x 541" or "what is the capital of New Jersey", even stuff such as the definition of "odiously". It was amazing how quick we would get it.
We played the same game once when he subbed for my english class. It wasn't even a challenge for the handful of band kids. Either the others would get it wrong or not even start writing it up when we were checking if it was right.

Everyone who agrees with this thread should shop at the store Hot Topic! Every time you make a purchase, they ask you to donate a dollar to help keep fine arts in the schools. So donate your dollars to hot topic. Every little bit helps!

http://community.hottopic.com/content/charities

anyways here's the page with info on all the progress they have made. They've raised over 5,000,000 dollars! I'm not trying to be an advertisement, but they're a good way to help if you can't afford to do much. Every little bit helps!

At our school the band went from a budget of 2000 dollars to about 100 dollars in like 4 years, so we have to raise all our money to be able to go to festivals which cost 500 and trips and what not so thats our story luckily our school requires a fine art credit to graduate which means piano and guitar are taken which means our fine arts teachers are fairly safe cause if they got rid of them kids wouldn't be graduating

...can seriously kiss my a** right now! Ugh! At the college I'm attending in the fall, they're currently preventing any new music minors from entering the minor program. It sucks, because the only worthy music classes are only available to the music majors (classes like Theory and Ear Training). The only music classes open to non-majors are GE and performing ensembles.

It's really hit my high school band lately, too. They're hardly doing any competitions next year as to what they're used to, and they don't get to go to championships. :[

Last year our entire band program WAS cut out.

All of the band geeks were FREAKING out.

They managaed to scrape enough money to let us keep it, but only barely.

This year we have had to do ALOT of fundraisers so we can keep it agai next year....

stupid idiotic gov cutting band.

We've had this curse since before I can remember: No assistant band director has lasted in our band program for over two years. When we finally get one that's planning on staying for another year, the school cut his position. The Curse strikes again! As one can imagine, this last marching season would have been impossible without the elementary school's music teacher (an ex-assistant band director that's as fruity as the Chiquita Banana lady's hat).
We've also had our budget cut to a third of what it was three years ago; our band may not afford to compete in St. Louis, an overnight trip that everyone looks forward to.
However, I realize that we're still really lucky: we can still afford top-notch music arrangements and percussion techs, and we still have this program. I hate that the arts is getting neglected all over...

Exactly!

it's like foriegn languages soon the kids 2 years beneath me will have to take it as a requirement which sucks. and i don't thing govenment people understand how important the arts are to kids themselves. it lets us express what we feel, and allows us to show creativity. so why do they have to get rid of the one thing that let's us show who we really are? it's pointless
