Dark green bushes rustled madly as if suddenly dancing in the playful wind as something disturbed their roots. That something, or rather someone, was Saagar’Tarang.
It was getting increasingly difficult for the little blue cub to escape the nurturing watch of the baby-sitters but thankfully an opportunity had presented itself. By pretending to join a game of hide-and-seek with the others cubs, he’d managed to slink away into the tall bushes and crawl his way out of the den area. It didn’t even occur to him that the others might actually look for him or that his actions might cause some undeserved worry in the adults that watched them. On the contrary, Sata‘s mind was already in the deepest parts of the jungle where he hoped his short legs would soon take him and in all the amazing creatures that the young boy wanted to meet and understand.

It was another day that all her brothers and sisters were able to play hide-and-go-seek with Jubes, while Ru was still on the mend in the healers’ den. Even though her one baby sitter wouldn’t give her position away this time, she made her hiding spot very difficult. That was until, she noticed her brother Saagar scampering into the jungle world that they were not suppose to venture into without an adult.
Though, knowing that didn’t stop Tamal’s curious feet to follow her lighter brother. She waited to make sure no one was around to see her dash from under another bush, before following her brother quickly into the foliage. Where was he going?
She stayed behind her brother’s movement, her dark cyan eyes watching him. Tama tried to stay as quiet as she could, making sure not to snap any twigs to notify the brother of her presence. When he would stop, she would pounce.

Sata had no idea he was being followed. He was far more interested in what was ahead of him than what was behind so it was a good thing that it was only her sister dogging his steps and not a predator who could take advantage of his carelessness. His white feather was dangling in front of the young cub’s chest and Sata stopped to look at it. He sat down and pawed at it, admiring the way it moved. He quite liked it, really, even if he wasn’t yet accustomed to its movements when he crawled or ran. It was a connection to a creature he’d never met, a feathered creature, a bird, something completely different from a lion but, from Sata’s perspective, infinitely more interesting.
He rose again and looked around, trying to decide which way to go. He could still hear the others so he wasn’t quiet safe just yet.

Creeping as close to her brother as she possibly could without being noticed, she swerved in and out of the foliage, trying to mimic the movements and sounds Sata was making. Her eyes narrowed, just how far was he planning on going? Inwardly, Tamal made a ‘hmph’ he was going to get in trouble when their parents found out…or the baby sitters! The wrath of those lions weren’t fun!
When out of the sounds of the pride, Tama rustled in the bushes behind him, quickly stopping her sounds if he happened to turn around and see he was being followed. When all was quiet once more, the dark pelted lioness cub bolted from the bush, tackling her brother to the ground.
Grabbing his ear, Tama pulled lightly. “You’regonnagetittroublllleeee!” she said with a mouthful of ear fluff. Letting go, the lioness looked right at her brother. “What are you doing all the way out here?” her voice squeaky.

Sata whelped as he was suddenly pushed to the ground and something grabbed his ear. It was hard to fight back when you have your face in the dirt, he realized. The cub growled until he recognized the voice of one of his sisters and taking advantage that she was talking, he broke free from her grasp.
“Tamal! Shhhhhhh!” Frowning, he looked at little lioness who had eyes exactly like his own. No, he did not want to get into trouble. And being caught sneaking off definitely meant trouble. So he needed to get his sister on his side. Sata didn’t think she’d tell on him but someone might hear them… and probably it wouldn’t be too long until someone realized not one but two of the heirs had suddenly gone missing. He grinned mischievously, pawing at Tamal playfully. “Not if you don’t tell on me.”

There was an equivalent smirk that was placed upon Tamal’s maw. “And, what will you do for me if I don’t tell you on, huh?” She really wouldn’t tell on her brother, for that meant getting asked the questions like ‘why were you even out there to begin with?’ Tamal could always make up a lie about it, but she hated to do so, especially around her parents.
“What are you doing out here anyways?” His sister asked, still staring at him, before gazing around the ‘unknown’ territory. They weren’t far from hometree, but well enough away to not know exactly there they were going. Hopefully they wouldn’t get too lost out on their own.

“What do you want?” Sata asked, tilting his head to the side. He had no idea what kind of thing could be of interest to his sister. What could he possibly give her? “I’ll owe you…?” Nope, that didn’t really sound good enough even to him. “I can find you a pretty flower… or another feather…?”
He shook the dirt of his coat, trying to come up with anything else he might be able to offer his sister. He was actually a little surprised when nothing came to mind.
“I’m just taking a walk. I want to go see some birds.” There was no reason to lie about his intentions as he didn’t think Tamal would really be that interested in his little sightseeing trip. "Why did you follow me?"

Tamal’s nose twitched. A flower? Really? Hmph, she would scoff at that idea. A feather however…that would be something nice. She’d put it around her neck to go right next to her white feather that he father had given her. “Find me a pretty bluish green feather, and we will call it a deal. What do you say?” She smirked.
“You’re weird…Sata. Birds?” The only thing about birds that interested Tama was the fact that they could fly. Sometimes the striped female would wonder what it was like to fly, but took note in the fact that the lions of this pride were almost capable of that, seeing as high as they got in the tree branches. One day Tama would be able to grace herself among them, branch surfing on the highest limbs.
“I…er…” She had to think fast. “Someone had to make sure you don’t go getting in trouble. What happens if something came out and attacked you! Mama would be pretty upset.”

“Mmm… I can’t promise I’ll find that color… but I’ll definitely try!” Sata grinned. It really seemed he would be able to go through with his plan. “But if anyone asks where I am, don’t say anything, okay?”
“I’m not weird! They’re fun! They’re pretty. And some even talk to you! Some of them have travelled from distant lands and they know what it’s like to see the world from up there!” Needless to say, this was a rather passionate subject for the young cub. His safety was the least of his concerns and he was willing to face punishment and small predators just for a few moments of alone time in the deepest parts of the jungle. “I can take care of myself. One day, I’ll be friends with all the animals in the jungle!”
In time, Sata would realize that things aren’t quite as easy as little cubs make them out to be. He would know that the jungle is not always safe for young lions and that most of the times he believed he had escaped the watch of the baby-sitters, he was actually being closely followed by a discreet adult. But for now… he could believe in his immortality and dream.

“Okay, deal.”
…His reaction to her weird comment just made the female’s eyes roll. “Like I said before Sata, you’re weird.” Although, every cub was unique in their own way, Tama really didn’t have much to judge. “Okay, you do that. But I’m gonna go home now, knowing that I saw you last alive right here. If you don’t come home before dark, Miss. Ruko might just hear that a certain somebody was wandering alone out here by themselves.” The striped female turned to leave her brother, flickering her cyan gaze back only after a moment. “Oh, Sata, don’t forget my feather!” she stated cheerfully, happily making her way back to hometree. Hopefully she wouldn’t have to break her promise about Sata’s whereabouts, but if she had to, she’d tell just to keep him safe.

Sata nodded at his sister’s first word and then chuckled at what she said after. Whatever, it was her loss if she couldn’t understand just how awesome birds were.
“I won’t be long.” He assured her quickly though he did have a tendency to forget himself when he was in the jungle. But he would do his best to find a… what was it? A blue or green feather, right? “I’ll try, I’ll try!”
He watched as his sister turned to leave and waited a few moments before crouching down and disappearing into the foliage. - FIN -
