now, I wonder, are we selecting the positive attributes we believe we have, or the ones we hope others will perceive us as having?

RafiCat now, I wonder, are we selecting the positive attributes we believe we have, or the ones we hope others will perceive us as having? I believe it's an excercise in contrasting how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us. About recognising those traits you believe you have, but aren't showing; those you show, but don't admit; as well as those that are obvious to both yourself and others. And, for that matter, recognising which traits are absent in both regards, as well. 3nodding
For instance: every person who has done mine, thus far, has called me "Observant" - I, however, did not. Now, personally, I think I'm more marked by the oberservations I fail to make, than the ones I make successfully - I actually consider myself rather imperceptive. This implies that either I present myself as being more observant than I really am (in which case I'm deceiving you all), or I'm actually more observant than I give myself credit for (and I'm deceiving myself). Personally, this whole excercise works as a way to attain an outside point-of-view into who you are, how you present yourself, and how the differences between them hint at ways to reconcile the two. The theoretical goal, to me, is for the lists to be identical - for how you perceive yourself and how you present yourself to be the same. Of course, though, that's a rather lofty goal. sweatdrop
P.S. If I'm really that observant, you'd think I would've noticed it - huh? xp

It comes down to honesty then - on our part and on the visitor's part. And I am bothered by both the limited choices, as well as the requirement for a minimum. Especially on the negative ones, lol. It tends to push people to make choices of things they don't really think, just to fulfill the minimum. And I wrote to the guy pn his facebook page and told him so. If I knew how I would make my own version... Red Kutai P.S. If I'm really that observant, you'd think I would've noticed it - huh? xp

And I wrote to the guy pn his facebook page and told him so. If I knew how I would make my own version... Actually, I think that's the point - well, not to push people to make unnatural choices, of course. whee The point of making people pick from an identical list, and making them pick a similar number of properties, is to ensure comparability. Given the great disparity between human points-of-view, simply having them describe you in their own words doesn't mean much, objectively; the list, however, serves as a singular lens through which all of those viewpoints pass, making each description much more relatable to the others. And, again, it's the relationship between the various descriptions that is actually the goal of the excercise. 3nodding
I do agree the number requirement is nearly unnecessarily limiting - at least as strict as it is - but the set-list description is actually what makes this system revolutionary, I think...
EDIT: Rather, revolutionary in the 1950s, when it was created... sweatdrop

Most of us only know each other online, and we tend to present ourselves more positively online, and to hide our failings.
