This is a private role play between SiMa Li [Chrystali] and Kiran [Kazu].

Setting:

Kiran spends some time relaxing at the docks to do some fishing. But he isn't the only one that planned to pay a visit to the beach.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 17, 2011 7:57 pm

It wasn't often that Kiran ran around without his shoes on, but there was a childish sense of freedom after kicking them off so that he could bury his toes in the sand. He didn't care if it seemed immature to anyone else. He liked the feel of sand squished between his toes. Besides his shoes would get ruined if he wore them while the waves gently lapped at his feet. After he rolled up his pants rolled, he waded farther into the shallows until the water reached up to his knees. Even though the water was fairly chilly, it felt nice against his legs on a warm day like today. The sun was out, but there were enough clouds out to cast shadows over the water. A soft breeze lazily drifted past him, bring with it the salty scent of the sea. It tugged lightly at the blue strands of his hair, which had grown out quite a bit over the months. He hadn't really bothered to pay much attention to that or really feel like taking the time to sit down to have it cut. So long as it wasn't in his way, the length of his hair didn't concern him much.

After baiting his hook with a slippery little worm that kept trying to wiggle its way out of his hand, Kiran pulled back his arm then swung it forward, letting the line fly into deeper waters. He was well away from the docks where the merchants were selling all their fish. The area was unoccupied, leaving him to fish peacefully without anyone else there to distract him. Or trying to take over his fishing spot. It always ruined the whole mood when he had to fight someone off from his favorite fishing spots. All he had to do now was wait for the fish to start biting, which could be a very long time if this turned out to be a poor choice for a fishing spot.

His sister Xiuying always seemed to think it was amusing how much he liked to fish. When asked why, she said something about it being odd how he, who loved attention and getting into trouble, liked a hobby where he wanted to be alone and away from anything that could possibly get him into trouble. Kiran shook his head with a tiny smile tugging at his mouth. Even a troublemaker like him needed some alone time sometimes to unwind. And having a way to make money that his mother wouldn't force him to return it when she learned of the means of how he acquired said money? That was always a bonus. Kiran rolled his shoulder in memory of his last bout of "trouble making." For a snobby looking, uptight woman, she sure knew how to hand her money purse to land a particularly hard blow to his shoulder. It still baffled him how she had eyes sharp enough to notice his subtle attempt to sneak a few coins from her purse while in a thick crowd of people pushing each other to get by, but she was too blind to notice that the dealer had completely ripped her off by selling her earrings with fake pearls set in an equally fake silver setting. That incident had wounded his ego a little.

A day off from studies and sparring -- it was just what the femme needed. Li breathed in deeply of the familiar salty air, an irrepressible smile curving her lips as the horizon spilled into the blue blanket of the ocean, making her heart swell with joy. It was like reuniting with a best friend, a beloved, even, to see the sea after months of grueling work in the ebb and flow of city going-on's. She missed the days of sea-faring, produce shopping, sculpting...but she wouldn't trade what she had now for those days. At least, now, she had a purpose.

A purpose that she was intent to forget for the day. Shaking her head sharply to chase out everything but love of the big blue yonder, she trudged over the distant stretch of stand barefoot, sandals in her hand, a fair length of smooth wood in the other. Li wanted to focus and there was no better place to do that than in the cradle of the waves, no better way to find her center than away from those who spoke to her heart so she might find herself silenced within. As she approached the steadily audible crest of the ocean tide, she noted that she wasn't the only one who had the idea of distancing one's self from the multitude of people: a lone fisherman stood off to her left, a shock of blue hair giving her a familiar tug, though she wasn't entirely certain why.

She would have continued down the beach to give the fisherman peace, but she did need something to base her woodwork off of...might as well work on her busts, she reasoned, smiling a little more mutedly to herself. Tossing her sandals down a short ways from the wet sand and putting the prepped wood atop of them, she pulled a bandana off her belt and slid it over her head, tying it in the back to keep her hair from falling in her eyes as she worked. Anything distracting her field of vision while working with sharp utensils was not the wisest fate to tempt. Heedless of the sand that would stick to her, Li took a seat with her feet pointed towards the ocean, toes curling at the water that barely lapped against her heels, retrieving the wood from her sandals and pulling a crescent-bladed knife and beginning to peel the wood to a more workable form, bright eyes flicking up to the fisherman every now and again to make sure her cuts were consistent.

His brow furrowed in mild frustration when he didn't feel even the slightest of tugs on the line. He drew the line back in then cast it out again, sending it farther than the previous time. But still, he didn't get even a nibble as time seemed to tick by at an agonizingly slow pace. He knew what felt like hours was only minutes. Perhaps this wasn't the best place to set up for fishing after all. That would explain why no one else was anywhere near this area. But if he just waited long enough, he was bound to get a bite. The waiting, however, could be the most frustrating part of fishing. Kiran took a deep breath and let it out slowly to calm that irritation. He had all the time he wanted, having nothing else to really do that day. He didn't need to get impatient of the lack of fish. After all, part of the reason he liked fishing was just the calm, quiet time spent by the water's edge.

But his thoughts were interrupted when he felt a tug, at long last, on his line. He pulled back on his fishing rod and carefully reeled in his catch. A mad grin crossed his face as he battled against the fish. That was another part of fishing that he liked: the fight against the sea to reel in a fish. He had lost quite a few fish in that battle, especially when he was just learning how to fish. It took a bit of a struggle, but he managed to draw in the fish. It wasn't a very big fish. Still, a fish was a fish, and even a small one was better than nothing. Even if he couldn't sell it at the docks, he could take it home to make a meal of it. He walked back to where he had set near his shoes. Next to his shoes was the bucket that he had brought to put the fish he caught.

As he was pulling the hook free of the fish, Kiran glanced about the area. It was then that he noticed he wasn't as alone as he thought he was. A woman, who looked somewhat familiar, sat not too far down the beach with a bit of wood in her hands. That was curious. And he wasn't exactly known for keeping his nose out of other people's business. After placing the fish in his bucket, Kiran shouldered his fishing rod and walked over to the woman. "What'cha doing?" he asked as he tried to peek at the bit of wood that she was working on.

While time passed in agonizing strides for the fisherman, it absolutely was lost to the woman carving. Li became immersed in her work, carving with her slender hooked knives and flicking the shavings off to either side of her. The young woman's slender brows hooded over her bright eyes, part of her lower lip held between her canines as she focused, unwittingly making a bit of a face as one might do when dealing with something so tedious. By the time the light-haired male was fighting with the fish, Li had a fair bit of the wood carved into a yet-unrefined but decent portrayal of the Lunarian's jaw and ear-fin.

She wasn't quite expecting to be approached, however, and it showed in the way the wood slipped in her hands and she jumped a little, blinking up at the young man as if he had just materialized on her stretch of beach. After a moment of realizing it was the fisherman and her focus had been broken, she offered a quick, apologetic smile. "I'm whittling the wood to carve a bust -- yours," she explained rather forwardly, having nothing to hide. Readjusting her grip on the piece of driftwood, she turned it and held it up for his inspection, taking a moment to look at the man herself.

Hm. Something about him was striking her as familiar -- Li never forgot a face, though she wasn't always swift with names. "Do I...have we met?" she ventures to query, tilting her head to the side and again looking over him appraisingly. She could still hear his voice in his ears, but something was off - a smile? Maybe his hair was different? But as the sun cast down on them, she remembered his smile, next to Yue Lao. Their conversation, however brief, returned his name to her - the mythical beast. "--Kiran, right?" She couldn't help but grin just a little, brushing her other hand off on her legs and pushing herself up to stand. "It's Li, SiMa Li. We met at the festival many moons ago."

Kiran stared with interest at the wood carving that she turned around to show him fully. He always found the different forms of art interesting. Many times, he would sit and watch his sister paint. It always amazed him how she could take a blank canvas and turn into a masterpiece. She tried to get him to paint once before, but all he managed to do was make a colorful mess, and not just on the canvas. That had been a fun day. But he never tried to paint again. The art gene hadn't been passed down to him. This was his first time seeing anyone working with wood as a medium for art. He rubbed his jawline then ran a finger over one ear-fin, trying to judge from touch if they matched what she had carved.

"You're pretty good at that," Kiran complimented with a friendly grin. Between touch and visual, he thought she was making a pretty accurate bust of him so far. There was a certain respect in his eyes when he lifted his gaze from the carving to look at the woman. He always had great respect for the artistic type that could turn nothing into something. Even Jianyu got a certain amount of respect for his abilities with tattooing. Despite being a Legionnaire, the man was amazing with needle and ink, and Kiran was proud of the tattoo that he wore on his back.

"Right," Kiran agreed when asked his name. He stared at the woman's face closely. The festival had been quite some time ago, and there were several people that he had met briefly as he walked around with his sister to enjoy what the festival had to offer. Her face was vaguely familiar. As he focused on it more, he began to remember a little. They had a brief conversation, if he remembered correctly. But someone else had been there, right? He sought for the memory and managed to wrangle it back to the front of his mind. Yue! She had been there with them. "Ah! That's right! SiMa Li," he said, grinning again now that he recalled her. "Did you enjoy the festival?" He took a seat in front of her so that she could see his face fully when she was working on her carving. "Ah, it won't mess up your carving if I talk while you do it, will it?"

The compliment, coupled with the way the male looked at her made her stomach tighten and flutter at the same time. Li was not used to compliments, least of all to her artistic endeavors, earning a quick, surprised smile from the femme. "My thanks," she murmured in a humble tone, bowing her head to Kiran. It was always just a whimsical hobby for her, something she enjoyed and took seriously but not enough to take injury over her lack of manufactured skill. She was always the type to judge artistry and perception by eye alone, believing that it was not something that could be taught, but felt. Had she known of the male's endeavors in painting, she would have told him as much.

As she was peered at for recognition, she simply smiled before tucking the wood between her knees, lifting the long tips of her hair to curl the lotus-colored length into a semblance of the fancier hairstyle she'd worn during the event. His sudden expression of her full name made her grin a little, dropping her hair and smoothing it beneath her bandana again. "I enjoyed it as much as I could. To recall those lost in the year -- it still hurts sometimes." Her expression softened a little, exhaling slowly in the memory of the day. It'd been big for her since it'd been the time she'd joined the Legion, but far be it from her to say such a thing out loud, especially to a man that was yet a stranger to her.

Tilting her head to the side as he sat, she again retook her seat, dipping her head in a pleased nod. "You're fine, Kiran. I hope you don't mind if I stare intently for detail specifics," she laughs a little, holding up the driftwood again and plucking out one of her finer, hooked knives. Dropping her bright eyes to place the knife safely against the wood, she rests her opposite thumb against the curve of the metal and gently starts to peel the parts where Kiran's eye sockets would be. "But don't let me distract you from fishing. It's a beautiful day to be out and about, is it not?" Li briefly glanced over to the swell of ocean tide, expression gentle and at ease. It was peaceful, and with a willing subject to her craft, it was turning out to be a good day.

Kiran caught the quick smile that graced her face and made it him smile even more. As quick as it was, it seemed to brighten her whole face, only adding to her beauty. He pressed his elbows into his knees as he rested his chin in his hands. He stared at her, probably just as intently as she stared at him to work on the woodcarving. She was indeed quite pretty with her soft, lotus-colored hair and her brightly colored eyes. And the purple coloring of her scales and ear-fins matched well to both.

He chuckled lightly when she lifted her hair to resemble the style that she had worn to the festival. He believed he would have gotten her name without that little hint, but it helped distract him from the embarrassment rising up in him from having stared at her so intently. It wasn't common for him to stare at someone like that. Normally, he gave people a quick glance, enough to remember their general appearances. Some people easily stuck out in his memory, for one reason or another. Bataar, and all his muscles, came to mind. But he was hard to forget, even without careful examination.

Kiran nodded, dropping his gaze. He could understand that. It was hard sometimes to remember loved ones lost. This year, he had been lucky that none close to him, emotionally, had died this year. His grandfather had passed on, but Kiran barely knew the man. He felt sadness over it, like with any loss, but it wasn't anything overwhelming.

"I don't mind at all," Kiran said with a wink. Being stared at hardly made him feel uncomfortable. He relished such attention. "Oh, don't worry about that." He waved it off like it was no big deal. After all, there would plenty of opportunities to get some fishing done. But how often would he get to be the subject of Li's woodcarvings? He doubted a chance opportunity like this one would come up often. "It certainly is," he agreed as he leaned back on his arms. He turned his head to stare out at the stare. "And this is the perfect place to enjoy such a day. I love the sea." He grinned as the sea breeze tugged at his hair.

His easy posture and relaxed mannerisms went far to impart the same comfort in the young woman. Her back remained straight and her motions were precise and practiced, but there was a contentment in the slope of her shoulders and a lack of severity in her brow as she usually wore. Picking out the slender chips of wood in the carving to match the curve and definition of Kiran's nose, her bright eyes flicking rapidly between her work and and the male's smiling features. She didn't miss the expressions that passed his face in that manner, tucking each shift away in her memory in case she had to finish at a later date.

The male was a man of few words, the likes of which she could appreciate. The words made her gaze linger for a moment before looking out over the ocean, the sight of it softening her features in a sort of fondness. "Likewise," she responded easily, "I love to sail. Were it a touch breezier, that was where I would be, hoisting sail and enjoying the great blue yonder." Slightly wistful in expression, she wore a small smile before returning to her work, features falling into the comfortable neutrality of her work. "Do you come to this stretch of beach often?" she asked while she worked, not wanting to make it awkward by staring without something to break the monotony. "I come this way to avoid the crowds. I prefer the babble of the crashing waves than idle chatter."

The irony that she was striking up conversation with such a claim wasn't lost on her, but it was a means for comfort and focus for her. Since Kiran was being kind enough to actually sit as a model for her, the least she could do was bring up a point of enjoyment for the both of them. It put a friendlier barrier between them rather than the random happenstance of two strangers on a similar mindset.

Kiran watched Li as she worked at the wood carving. It always amazed him how easily they made it look. A cut here and there on the bit of wood, and already the shape of his nose was starting to take form. It was like watching his sister paint. With a few strokes of various colors, she could turn a blank canvas into a beautiful portrait or landscape. Even watching intently as she worked, Kiran still could never figure out how they knew where to make the right stroke or cut to achieve the look they were going for on canvas or wood.

The waves gentle rolled in and lapped at the beach. Kiran tore his gaze away from the distant horizon to stare at Li again. "You sail?" he asked as a grin slipped across his face. "I've never gone sailing myself, but I hope to get a boat one of these days. Sail out on the open waters and spend my days fishing out at sea. That sounds like a good life to me." He leaned forward, scratching his cheek as he wondered if that sounded silly to Li.

"From time to time," he answered, glancing down the beach. It was still just the two of them on the beach. No one else had bothered to come to this spot yet today. "When it's quiet, that way I don't have to fight for a spot to fish. I have a few other spots where I like to fish that most people don't know about." Or at least, he hadn't encountered many, if any, Lunarians at some of his favorite fishing spots. A single brow lifted. They were quite different in that respect. He loved crowds. Some of the idle chatter tended to get dull and boring, but sometimes that was just what he had to listen to for a while before a single juicy bit of information slipped from someone's mouth.

A flick of wrist, and another sliver of wood was carved away, forming the gentle slope of skin between nose and upper lip. Her amethyst eyes continued their quick, focused glances between the young man and her work, her posture perfectly still so that only her hands, the wood and the utensil upon it moved. The question earned a brief lift of her head, however, a brief smile following it. "I do," Li confirmed with no small amount of pride, "and I agree. It sounds delightful." Lowering her head to resume her work, she donned a content expression, attentive to both Kiran's words and her work. "You must truly love to fish, then, to wish to make a living of it and seek it on your idle days. Those who taught me to sail are fisherman -- I'd be happy to put in a word for you, if you wished to accompany them sometime."

It was no tiny offer on her part, but it wasn't exactly obvious. Li rarely put her name to that of another, for putting in a good word could fall back in a negative manner if the one she was supporting was not, in fact, worthy of the claim. Sitting on the beach with her willing model, speaking comfortably of passing fancies and hobbies, it was easy for her to overlook her pride for a moment and remember that she was seeking the betterment of all Lunarians. If she could help improve the quality of even one person's life, she would do it. "Have you fished in the icy months? That is a thrill. Few people to contend with -- and with the reward being rare, it's every bit as satisfying as it is frustrating."

A faint chuckle escaped her then, recalling fondly memories of having to break ice around the boat to moor it, as well as the feeling of remarkable success to catch a decent haul in the frigid months -- a feast to be had in a time of famine was a delightful high. She came out of her thoughts as Kiran's brow lifted, finding the change in his expression of interest, given that she was studying his features for her work. It actually made her grin for a brief moment. "What? You're inclined to disagree?" The words were without malice or challenge, mostly asked out of genuine curiosity. She found the opinions of others to be more a source of intrigue than annoyance, mostly because the reasons behind each person's preference was so varied and wide-spread.

Shifting the wood in her hand, she moved up to the brow and quickly shaved off several peels. It didn't look like much - several flat planes in a small area - but it would outline the lifted brow well enough for her mind. If the bust came out the way she wanted it to, it would be amusing indeed.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 19, 2011 12:38 pm

A smile slipped across his face, calm and relaxed as he watched a curled sliver of wood fall away and drop onto the beach. "I do," he said with a quick nod of his head. A laugh bubbled up from his chest. The first time that his father and Uncle dragged him fishing, Kiran thought it was boring. But it grew to become one of his favorite pastimes over the years. "There's just something about the sea, the salty smell in the air, and the struggle to reel in a big catch. I love it." He sat up a little straighter as a spark of intrigue flashed in his eyes. "You'd do that?"

The offer surprised him. He would never expect someone he barely knew to put in a good word of him. He would love the opportunity to get out on a boat with some other fishermen and learn the tricks of fishing out on the open sea from them. It would be a great learning experience for him. He would really owe Li in return if she helped him get such an opportunity. His brow lifted at her question. "During the icy months?" He shook his head, having never considered fishing during that time of year. "Sounds like quite the challenge." A grin appeared again as he thought about the challenge of fishing in the icy months. He did love a challenge.

A shoulder rolled in a small shrug. "Well, the quiet, calmness is nice from time to time, especially when fishing," Kiran said, enjoying the crash of waves from the sea. "But there's always so much excitement in a crowd. People chattering, vendors shouting out their wares, the smell of the food stalls wafting through the air." There was nowhere quite as thrilling as the market street with all the people bustling around in a hurry. But he knew not everyone shared his opinion. His sister wasn't too fond of the busy market street with people pushing others around to get to their destinations.

Li chuckled under her breath as she continued her work, keen eyes flicking to Kiran's face and back to her bust, her small knife whittling away with precision and familiarity. "For one who loves to fish and admires the sea so, I find it interesting that you're so fond of the hustle and bustle of the city." Another flick of wrist, another fallen curl of wood. "I enjoy the marketplace immensely but that is a day-to-day activity for me. Times like these are a boon; a blessing."

The returned question made her laugh, rolling her shoulders in a shrug. "Who am I to deny any Lunarian the path they wish to follow? I know fishermen, and while that's not an amazing feat by the weight of most others, if means something to you. That alone would satisfy me." Appreciation went a long way, in-so-far as she was concerned, and to appreciate the finer things - such as one of the main suppliers of food for their people - was an ample appreciation by her standards. "Ice fishing," she agreed good-naturedly, whittling away, "when the crabs come inland and are easier to catch, it's far more perilous weather." But oh, the meals she could make with such succulent meat! Even in the warmth of the season, she found herself pining for winter already.

The bust was coming along nicely now. There were more discernible features -- the bridge of his nose, the divots of his eyes, the softer line of his mouth -- though she was taking care to switch blades as she lightly peeled the wood for his scales and ears.

Kiran tilted his head as his lips twitched in a light smile. "One can't like both?" he asked, amusement filling his eyes. "Or am I not allowed to like the attention of a crowd if I like the solitude of fishing?" As much as he loved attention, Kiran couldn't imagine being forever in the spotlight. It could get tiring at times, and when that happened, he wanted to just withdraw into himself. Fishing became one of those things where he could relax outside the limelight and think about things.

Kiran did know some of the vendors down at the docks. Isao came to mind right away. But while they had helped get him started in selling the fish he caught, none of them ever invited him to go on a fishing expedition on their boats. Perhaps Kiran could have asked them to let him go with them on one trip, but he wasn't sure if his lighthearted friendship with them extended that far. They might joke and tease and help him on the docks, but they might think it rude if he tried to tag along on their boats. "I'd really appreciate that," he said with a genuine smile.

"Crabs," Kiran said with a dreamy sigh. Only when he got them at a restaurant was he able to taste how delicious and succulent they really were. Whenever his mother tried cooking them, they ended up having some strange acidic taste to them that made Kiran shudder. The poor crabs! They were much too taste to be ruined in such a manner. "I need to learn a good recipe for cooking those." When he finally decided to move out on his own, he would need to start cooking more frequently. He hoped he wouldn't botch the crabs as badly as his mother.

Kiran leaned forward a little to get a better look at her work. "How long have you been practicing this?" he asked with a hint of awe in his voice. She had captured his likeness perfectly.

Laughing under her breath at the statement, she shook her head, amusement lingering in her bright eyes. "Of course you are, it's simply such a rare occurrence that it's worth mentioning. I tip my proverbial hat to you, Kiran." Chuckling in good humor, she kept at her work, mulling over the mixed signals; most people liked one or the other, but it wasn't unheard of, she supposed, to be a well-balanced and intelligent individual. A sad thing it was so rare!

"Then I will speak with them on my next break," Li confirmed with an upward lift of her lips. The expression immediately warmed into another understated laugh, feeling her cheeks hurt from all her mirth. The female rarely indulged in such amusement and laughter, but it was hard not to when Kiran was so open and honest about his reactions. Lunarians - especially those who were divided by faction - always seemed so guarded, so filtered in their everyday lives that it was refreshing to just be and have it be good enough. "Crabs are a fickle dish," she agreed, "but I like them simple. Boiled in the shell and dipped in an herbal marinade my mother makes, there's nothing quite like it. I wish you luck in that endeavor!"

When he leaned forward, she had just finished the finer details of his scales, prompting her to put the peeler down and turn the wood towards him to better see. It was rough - making driftwood perfectly smooth wasn't something she had managed yet, as carrying around sandpaper hadn't occurred to her - but it was undeniably Kiran in the curve of his brows and quirk of his lips. "Since I was small. I don't remember how old I was, but I remember walking with my grandfather in the market on the dock and seeing a woman carve a prow for one of the ships. It was the most remarkable thing, to see something so beautiful spring to life with each pass of chisel and maul." Li rarely indulged in sharing her thoughts on her hobbies, but once more, she felt that the Lunarian was open enough that she could return the favor.

Indicating that Kiran could take the bust, she had the grace to look a little sheepish. "I'm afraid this is the best I can do right now. I wasn't prepared to do even this, but you're such a fantastic subject. My thanks."
