Mars was lounging around. It was his normal habit to do so as much as he could but usually he enjoyed it more - right now he was sore, grumpy, tired. Mercury had deserted him after they'd had yet another blow-out about nothing and everything. Mercury was determined to stifle his fun. Well, it was working, this wasn't fun.

He hadn't eaten, hadn't groomed, nor found any of his favourite flowers in days. He felt raw, his eyes hurt, his muscles ached and his head pounded. How was this 'reality' that Mercury went on about sooo much better. He rolled from one side to his back, legs lazily in the air, tongue lolling and trying to warm himself in a siliver of sunlight filtering down between the trees under which he was trying to kick-start his body into some useful mode.

His mind wandered and he began to think of what he was missing out on being stuck out here in the middle of nowhere. He hadn't had action of any sort in days. He added boredom to his woes. Cricking his neck he eventually rolled up and onto his feet, stretched and began to wonder which direction to head in.

As was usually the case, Marion's actions preceded her. The was a crack, and an authoritative bark out in the distance, followed by a profound silence which stretched intently on for some time. Eventually, it was replaced by a medley of noise Mars would probably remember, roots being pulled from the earth, stones scattered underpaw, branches being broken under the weight of something large. In short, the sound of a rapidly moving bear, or possibly a hurtling boulder, that accompanied the ruddy wolf wherever she rambled. Which was, in this case, dead-on for the place Mars was standing. She had a fine nose, and magnificently sharp eyes, and she spotted him with great delight and satisfaction, her tongue lolling out in sloppy victory. She put on a terrifying burst of speed and hurtled toward him, effectively evoking some charging behemoth - a bison, perhaps.

"You!" she shouted! "You left!"

Well well, if it wasn't her! .. whatsername. The loud chick. Mars wondered if he could stuff some leaves in his ears but before he could even think how he'd get them in there the barrelling orange and black female had gotten to him. With slightly bleary eyes he stared up at her, trying to make heads or tails of what she was saying.

"I left? I left what?" Mars was perplexed. He wasn't a great thinker at the best of times and when he was feeling like s**t dropped from a hight... He knew they'd been travelling together, been doing some cool s**t and looking at funky things but one day he'd gone off to see something - who know what, he certainly couldn't remember - and when he'd come back everyone was gone. Except Mercury, but he was never bloody gone. Except now. Jeez, everything was on its head at the moment wasn't it?

Mars just stared blankly at Marion, looking a bit poleaxed.

Marion's tongue lolled into an authoritative pant; she took a long second to just stare him down, her brow in a stern furrow. Boy, he didn't look so good. "You left the group,", she said, with surprising feeling, and was that a gleam of hurt in her eye? "Right before everything interesting started to happen! Kamiya found her prince and took him captive!" Well, kind of! She paced off to Mars's side, sizing him up as a way to collect herself. "So what are you doing, anyway? You look like s**t."

"Oh... right, yeah. The group. I didn't know that was a thing" he said, unconvincingly. He reached up with a back leg, unsteadily skritching behind one ear. "But, y'see, like there was something and then there was noone and..." he shook his head, giving up. Who cares? He had never been tied to one place in his life, ever, he couldn't imagine why she was all fussed about him heading off when he wanted to - that's just what wolves did!

"You mean the stuck up chick? I always thought she was crazy. What'd she go and do that for?" he wondered aloud.

He wasn't one to dwell though: "Thanks" he mumbled in reply to her last comment. "I wasn't doin' anything. Just like, thinking what to do. Yeah". Finally, as everything started to sort itself out in his mind he realised what she'd said.

She sniffed at the male as he answered, and scratched at his ear; they might look a whole lot alike, but he smelled nothing like her family. And he lacked the sharp scent of dominance, one of her favorite smells. "You are terrible at paying attention to things," she drawled, as a crow does to a raven, with her chin held high. It was easy to feel powerful around Mars. "She's not crazy. She's holding him for ransom, so she can return to the pack that held her as a slave, and take her revenge!" (She did not remember why Kamiya had taken Kai. Or she remembered enough to know that it was too boring to relate.) "Where's your brother? Did you wander away from him, too?" Tiring for now of her braggy posturing, the bearish wolf sat, and turned her frowning laser-stare to Mars's face. Surely, surely there was a way to make him excited and interesting. But just how to do it?

"What's so good about paying attention anyway?" he grumbled "you're not so hot at it either, like, I mean, you totally enjoy new stuff, right?" he said, half accusing, half looking for sympathy.

"For ransom? That's kinda cool, actually. I didn't know she had it in her, she always seemed so straight laced" an almost-smile lit on his face at the thought. He couldn't imagine her as a slave, either... though that wasn't such a terrible thought... when he let his mind linger on the idea. He let out a short bark of laughter at his internal thoughts, but didn't bother to explain them, figuring that girls never did want to hear that sorta thing about other girls. Talking of which, his usual chat-'buddy' had just come up...

"Mercury? Who knows. He buggered off somewhere" his griping whinyness came back quickly when he thought how he'd been 'abandoned' by his brother. "What are you doing back here?" he asked finally, looking for another reason to be sullen.

Marion responded predominately to Mars's monologue with a series of elaborate scowls. His final question was the last straw; she pounced at him, snarling, coming to snap close by his face as she charged past, to lumber a little ways out into the forest. "You twit," she shouted, from twenty feet away, "that was the first thing I TOLD you!" She was hulking over the empty space around her, glowering over at him with her tail erect and her ears flat against her skull, suddenly mad enough to be heedlessly hurtful. "Do you feel as stupid as you sound, Mars? Because you sound too dumb to clean your own a**, you stupid rat-d**k!" She gave a righteous huff. "I didn't want you to run off, dumbass. I came looking for you. And your shitty nervous fake brother!"

"But but you.. but" he shook his head trying to clear the last of the fug from it. He was kinda dumb, he knew that, but he had never been that bothered by it. Life was interesting for him and he'd never felt the need to stand up to anyone's ideas of what someone 'must' be. Still, he knew she was trying to be mean to him and wasn't sure exactly why. His ears flattened, his expression becoming somewhat pitiful.

"Look, I'm sorry" it was always good to say that, even if you weren't sure why exactly someone else was angry. Just because he was a free spirit didn't mean he needlessly pissed people off. Not when he was sober anyway. "Dunno what you mean 'bout fake brother though, he might not look much like me but neither did half the rest of my sibs". He got to his feet and made to follow her - if she'd come looking for him that must be what she wanted, right?

See Mars wilt in front of her took the wind out of her sails, somewhat. A sigh burst out from her lips, and she settled for scowling at him. She's been spoiling for a fight, and had gotten pitiful as an answer instead. "I guess you're right," she mumbled, only now remembering that she had looked like absolutely none of her immediate family...always the orange sheep in the flock. As he caught up to her, she gave him a consolatory frown, and began to walk. "I'm sorry I snapped at you," she allowed; "I'm just not used to having to answer questions so many times. Why aren't you and Mercury with your other siblings?"

"S'ok" he conceded, gracefully. Mercury often chided him for the same thing. Mars didn't know why it sometimes took five different ways of saying a thing to get through to him but, to be honest, he avoided looking too hard at questions like that.

The skinny orange male matched Marion's pace, padding slowly through the forest. He thought for a while about her question before answering - it was another thing he didn't think about often, truth be told, but mainly because it hadn't occurred to him to, rather than from residual guilt.

"Dunno" he said, finally. Figuring she might want more of an answer than that, he tried to work out in his mind why it might be so and let those thoughts stream out. "We never were, me and Mercury. Always out, lookin; for an adventure, something to do, y'know? Never liked being cooped up and Ma was a free spirit - she said she was shackled when she was a pup. Not literally, I don't think, figuratively, like? Anyway she said we should do what we wanted so we all did. Merc an me always stuck together and we just kept going out on adventures until one day we sorta... didn't go back. Guess I figured that's what most wolves did?" his tone gave the question back to her.

Marion listened, focusing on being patient. She hadn't gotten over feeling bad about berating him. And, really, it did feel kind of good to finally get some information about his past; it was almost as if it made him somehow beholden to her. She shook her head vigorously as the conversation passed to her, her ears flapping. "It's what they want to do, I think," she mused, a rumble of unrest sounding within her. "Everybody always talks about how family is important, but I swear it's bullshit. My parents are the reason I'm alive, but that's all they are." Apparently, the topic had rerouted slightly as it went through Marion's thick head.

"Maybe you're right" Mars conceded, genially. "I mean, like, I never see Ma anymore and I don't need her or anything but it totally feels weird when Merc isn't around, yeah? You got bros and sis's?" his head tilted to the side as he considered that out there could be a whole family of Marions.

Having sibs was cool and all, Merc had always been there for him... until now. It was great having someone to back you up but then there was always someone nagging... Even if Marion didn't have sibs, though, Mars supposed she did have that crazy rigid chick who seems as uptight as Merc, truth be told.

Marion took a pause in her stride to stamp at an unlucky patch of earth, looking unusually cowed. "Yeah, I've got lots of bros and sisses," she grumbled, and picked up her pace. "We never really liked each other, though." Her eyes stayed dark for a long moment, then brightened as she thought of a new entertainment. "You like having Mercury around, though? You don't get frustrated with each other all the time? How is he different from the rest of your family?"

"Really? Cool! I only have two bros and two sisters" he'd never felt a lack of siblings, and he didn't know he had more half-siblings out there now, nor did he care. "Merc is cool but sometimes he's a drag, yano? He's all 'lets not do that, 'lets not eat those' and s**t. I mean, he used to be cool but he's got all fussy in the last couple months". It was one of the few things that brought Mars down, and he resented Merc at times for 'ruining his fun'. He knew it was mainly brotherly concern, and he still loved his bro, but he didn't wanna live a dull life.
