Eusi walked confidently up the wind swept trail, his amber eyes sweeping calmly over the craggy landscape, noting details of the terrain and filing them away for later. His Shīfu's words echoed in his head, 'Know where your foot will fall, or it shall be you who yields to the earth.' Not surprising it was Master Déhuá he had found himself missing as each moon passed and took him further and further from his homeland.
Each step on this journey had brought him to this storm ravaged coastline and the lions that made their home here. He'd heard of them, words said in fearful whispers out in the Rogue Lands. Of their prowess in battle, of their ferocity, and unique honor code. It had intrigued him, and so he had come.
Now, standing just outside of what was clearly the entrance to their lairs, Esui waited, his golden coat bright against the storm clouds of the afternoon sky. His weight was evenly balanced on his paws, his look collected and at ease. He understood the Challenge he must face, and waited for it with a calm expectancy. (Word Count 964)

Taraxa often spent his days lounging around the borders of the pride. Not only did this mean that he could keep his eyes out for any lovely ladies that might come too close to the pride, but he could also accept any challenges that might be called out across the territory.
Or not called.
Taraxa spotted the boy, watched him come closer. A whelp, mane barely growing in; Taraxa shook his head. This could prove to be either entirely too entertaining or rather embarassing -- the outcome of this challenge could determine that.
"Are you lost, boy?"

Esui regarded the large full grown male with his inscrutable amber gaze, whatever emotion he was feeling, unexpressed. In a matter of breaths he took in the other's size and his bulk, and knew this fight would be a close match. His best bet lay in using his speed and smaller stature to his advantage, if he became pinned, it would be over.
When the golden lion spoke, it was with a respectful tone, though his accent was heavy and syntax perhaps a bit backward, " Lost I am not." Though he was the challenger, he would not begin the battle until the other did, it would be disrespectful to the Elder before him to assume so much.

Taraxa shook his head. Though the adolescent was younger than he, Taraxa had been through many battles, many vikings -- and many challenges. He'd lost a few but had won most of them, and despite the speed that the youth likely possessed, Taraxa wasn't worried. If he lost this challenge, well, the Stormborn would welcome a fine specimen to their ranks. If he won, well... it would be interesting to see how the kid handled it.
"Come on, then," Taraxa almost purred. He was never one to start a fight. Bracing his paws wide, golden eyes narrowed as he watched his opponent, waiting for the boy's first strike.

Esui nodded and stepped forward, taking his place in the center of the path. He bowed his head low, his eyes still on the full grown male, in a the proper gesture of respect for an Elder and for an opponent.
Then he struck, all of the wiry speed of his lean, slender body, exploding at once as he darted in. At first it seemed like it would be a senseless full frontal charge, but at the last possible moment, he side stepped to the right and raked his claws along the other's shoulder, his momentum carrying him through the motion, allowing him to pivot on his hind legs and dance out of the way, now behind and slightly to the right of the much larger male.

Taraxa grunted under the attack. It brought a new awareness to his presence, this boy was determined. That pleased Taraxa. A true warrior was always determined. Taraxa could only hope he didn't let it go to his head, as most youths tended to do. A successful swipe or two and they thought they had him beaten. Taraxa had been through many battles, had taken many shots, had won many challenges. He would bide his time as he had many times in the past.
Though the gashes in his shoulders were seeping blood, Taraxa didn't pay them any attention. Those golden eyes were locked on the equally golden adolescent before him. Taraxa leapt at the boy (an obviously half-hearted move to those who knew him well) and landed harshly on his wounded leg. He hadn't expected his leg to give way beneath him but it did, sending Taraxa tumbling into the dirt.

The young lion did not waste the opportunity that was given him, and as the older male's leg buckled, he was on him. He knew he could not hope to pin the larger lion under him, but he could hamper his mobility with a well placed attack.
Dancing in, he slashed with just his canines at the thin layer of muscle and skin that covered the ulna and radius of his opponents back leg. He did not have the jaw strength yet to crush the bone, but he could wound the other male enough to make baring his weight painful. Esui had closed around the opposite leg of the one that had given out, showing that he had brains as well as skill within his fighting ability.

Taraxa was pleased that the boy seemed a smart lad. A lion such as this would make a fine Reaver, and perhaps even a Captain in due time. Of course, such thoughts were ripped from his mind when the other lion's teeth sank into his hind leg, and Taraxa roared in agony.
And fury.
Reaching back with claws unleashed, the lion sought to cause the challenger the same pain that Taraxa felt. With any luck his claws would sink deep into the skin over his shoulder. At this point Taraxa needed all the luck he could get, as his vision was blurred by both rage and pain.

Esui saw the attack coming in his peripheral vision, but as fully engaged as he was, he knew he would not be able to move completely out of the way. His only recourse was to roll with the blow, and finish his own attack.
As the heavy paw hit him, he turned away with it, laying open the leg under his teeth, and his own shoulder. He pivoted, quick as a snake, facing the much bigger male with a calm expression, his breathing barely excreted, and if he was in pain, which he had to be with the jagged tears in his shoulder, he did not show it.

Taraxa's body was not smooth and flawless -- no, it was rippled and twisted with various scars that laced over his body. Each told a story, and so would the ones gifted to him by this boy. He wore each scar as a badge of honor, not shame, and he couldn't help but grimace-smile at his very apt opponent.
Teeth bared, Taraxa leapt at the boy with both paws outstretched, claws unleashed and eagerly seeking the flesh along the other male's back. Should he succeed, the lad would likely have his own scars to bear.
Taraxa was not holding back.

The younger lion did not flinch as the large male launched himself at him, but rather than move backward, he dodged forward and to the left, bringing himself practically under the full grown adult.
He swiped upward with his claws, but mistimed it and missed, putting himself in a badly compromised position with his opponent. He braced for the impact of the claws.

Taraxa was always fond of the way his claws felt when they sank into the flesh of his opponent. The rich crimson of blood would make a pretty contrast against the glaringly yellow pelt of his opponent, a contrast that Taraxa always enjoyed.
It was a giddy emotion, blatantly proving oneself to be better in battle against ones opponent, but Taraxa did not want to gloat. After all, the battle was not won until mercy was granted, and the younger lion had not asked for mercy as of yet.
Taraxa raised his paw to strike again, this time aiming his claws at the other lion's face.

Esui lifted his lip, but he did not growl. Growling was a waste of breath. There was a time to growl, and this was not it. Instead, he shifted hi weight on his back paws and planted them, twisting almost in half as he swiped, not at the other lion's body, but at his upraised paw and extended claws.
He caught the blow meant for his face on his fore arm, a grunt of pain leaving him. The older male's claws sunk in deep, and Esui knew this fight was over. Without being able to bare his weight, at least not for a few days, he could not hope to win, perhaps not even come to a draw. It would not do. He was here to become one of them, and becoming one of them also meant understanding them.
The golden furred youth met the golden eyes of his opponent, and nodded in salute to the greater skill of the Storm Born. He barred his throat to him and waited, calmly, for him to either accept his yield or deliver a blow.

Taraxa grinned at the male. Yes, this was very, very pleasing to the older lion. A proper show of submission. T'was a pity that he hadn't been successful in his attempts to join the pride. Taraxa lowered his paw to the ground with a soft chuckle.
"You rest. Tend to your wounds. Come back and prove your strength. You will be a strong asset to this pride. You have the soul of a Stormborn. You belong here, you must only prove it." Taraxa nodded. This was the kind of male that he hoped his daughters would find. A strong, silent and determined lion. More importantly, he was honorable and respectful. Taraxa liked that.
Taraxa hoped he would see the boy again.

Esui stepped back, and bowed his head in respect, " Thankful I am. Return I shall."
He turned his back, showing his trust in the other lion and moved off to the trail that lead to cliff base where he had made camp in one of the shallow caves along the beach.
