Scouted my opponent and saw he had a bunch of Zealots and Sentries sitting there. Figured he was gonna rush me any minute now (never came) so I threw down a quick Hydra Den. Would Hydra/Ling have been the appropriate response?

Yeah, I'd have to say go the Mondragon route.
If your opponent is Protoss: build roaches, and just keep buildings roaches, it doesn't matter what he makes, just keep making roaches.

I found roach hydra took care of most of the game until the protoss started making collosus. Even then, you can out micro him a bit and focus down the colossus.

just make spines and drone up, spines rape sentry/zeal. also some lings to threaten backstab, kill forward pylons, and tank so spines can dps/force ff's.
roaches would get raped by ffs, hydras come too late and also get demollllished by FF and very expensive... spine lets you drone safely because 80 hp sentries aren't gonna do s**t vs them. i make like 3~ spines.. more if i'm really worried that it might be an exceptionally strong 4gate (3spines if i don't know what exactly they're doing/it looks like 3gate expo).
if you go roach you're not making drones so your income sucks, and if he never attacks you're down on income. spines are expensive but SO strong, they're worth it cause they let you drone without fear of anything but air/dts.
