Sulking away from her family's den, Subarenae scuffed the sands before her feet as she walked, digging little trenches with her passage. She'd been kicked out of the den for damaging a minor wall again. Mama could get so frantic about those silly walls. Papa knocked the walls down all the time with his experiments, but she never got angry at him, but Suba just takes a few chunks out and she gets sent off to 'play outside'.
At least it was a warm day, and the sand threw heat up at her feet nicely. She stopped at a nice spot near a tree and dug spastically, tossing sand up all around her, until she had a cub sized hole. She bunkered down in it and scooped the sand back over to cover her, and wriggled down until only the tip of her head was uncovered. What a wonderful feeling, being hot and heavy all over from the sand. She peeked out at the world, feeling very safe.

Auri was fed up with her brothers. All they wanted to do was tussle and pounce and roar and pretend to be big grown up lions fighting each other. The little cublet huffed, treading primly along the pathway. She didn't really have anywhere to be going, but it felt good just to be on her own for a while. Oh, she loved her brothers, no question. But they were just so... dirty and loud and... and... BOYS!
She shook her head and tsked like a sour old spinster. They just didn't know how to behave like gentlemen! She, now she knew how to behave like a proper lady! Each paw was set down with precision, every tuft of fur was in place, and her coat glowed gold beneath the bright sun. When she grew up, she was certain she'd be sought by some important Pad to be his Beybanu, to teach the wild rogue banus how to behave. The very idea made her chin rise and her eyes to half-slit in pride.
The sun did feel good, and here was a lovely patch of sand. Not that she was the sort to wallow in it, but it made a nice place to settle down for a nap sometimes. She padded into it serenely, settling down into a comfortable hollow, folding her legs neatly beneath her. Obviously she'd spend time grooming herself after this little sunbath, but it felt good, and was so nice and quiet! Curled into a pillow-shape, she let her eyes slide closed as a smile spread on her face. Ah yes, this was more like it!

he first few minutes of sitting in her sand den, not much happened in the world around her. Some insects crawled by, and a bird flew overhead. Still, that was enough to make Suba giddy with a strange sense of voyeuristic glee. She was the hidden observer, the world carrying on around her unawares. Her little cub mind played up the scenario, until she was assuming her hiding spot rendered her completely invisible.
When the other cub wandered into view, her fur tingled under the sand with excitement. A stranger! Another female cub in the pride, one she'd never met! What a fascinating coloring, she blended in better with the sand better than Suba could ever hope for. When she dropped to a crouch the effect was even stronger.
Fascinated, Suba shifted forward, claws digging into the sand near her to pull herself forward. She even ducked her head to shove the sand out of the way with her forehead, not worried in the slightest that she might lose access to the air. It was slow going, swimming underground, but after a bit she peeked her head up and found she was much closer to the female, almost on top of her. Thrilled, she bolted out of the sand, paws spread wide, with a "Rahh!"

The calm atmosphere was disturbed by an odd sound. It was... kinda scratchy, scrapey. Auri's ears swiveled, trying to locate the sound and identify it, though her eyes remained closed. Utterly relaxed, she had no sense of her impending doom. Thus, when the other cub erupted from the sand, Auri was caught entirely off-guard.
With a shriek of fright, she threw herself sideways, landing in a tumble in the sand, going head over heels a couple times before scrambling to her paws. Without looking back, she scrabbled for traction in the slippery sand and managed to dive into a thick clump of bushes growing on the edge of the sandhole. Shaking so hard that the bush trembled, she peered back out to see what had attacked her, not even realizing that if it had been serious she'd have been dead already. To her little cubbie mind, she'd barely escaped with her life!!
