She took a breath and soaked in the sun with her half lidded silver eyes. Smiling she nestled herself into the sand just beyond the stone slates that jut up from the dunes. Fia would be caring for those now, the pride's history, the visual records. She knew, through the sand rubbing on her pelt now and on the stone that she was coming to her time.

She only wished when the time arrived she might join the sun and watch over her family.

Karana'Mzaana closed her eyes and stretched. Her once lean body thin from age. Still, she felt that there was one more thing she had to do before going, but she knew not where to draw inspiration.

Miale had decided to go exploring. Her siblings were all accounted for, and not beating the snot out of each other. Well...sorta. They were all still Firekin, and roughhousing was part of growing up. They just weren't being AS...temperamental as usual. And since they were some semblance of calm, Miale had decided it was now or never to explore that day!

She hadn't expected what she found. Stones in the dunes, covered in pictures. The juvenile female stared at them intrigued. Some of the pictures even matched the stories the cub sitters told she and her siblings! She darted about, looking them over, curious.

From the corner of her eye she could see something red darting about the sand. For an instant Mzaa believed it to be some sort of strange desert creature, perhaps a lizard, but alas it was a small child and she smiled. Pushing herself to stand she walked slowly to the great stones that jutted up from the sea of sand. This one was still small, not too young, but small enough to know adventures lived in the world.

"You like them, yes?" she asked softly. Mzaa's silver eyes fell onto this vibrant flame, eyes hot like new embers. The wings on the child's back reminded herself of the marking she wore upon her own pelt.

Also, they were familiar.

"Have you found this place before?" she was curious.

Miale started at the new voice, golden eyes wide in surprise. She'd been snuck up on! She shook herself, gathering her wits quickly and nodding. "They remind me of the tales the cub sitters tell myself and the other cubs." She looked the older lioness over, uncertain of who she was. She LOOKED like she fit into the pride..."I've never been here before, though."

Karana'Mzaana smiled and looked to the stones, eying where stories were in proximity to where the two of them stood. Ah, her image was a bit farther over. "These are the stories of the pride, past and present," she spoke softly. She took a few steps and placed her paw gently about two head-heights of the little one, "Your image, as you are a part of the firekin, a part of the history, is here, you see?"

She motioned to a tiny picture among others of the same age. The golden eyes stuck out amongst the red and black figures.

"It is never too late to come to this place, it is where I am usually, with my apprentice, soon to take my place and let me rest. I am Karana'Mzaana, Mzaa is much easier I think," she laughed lightly. "I'm one of the historians, who might you be golden one?"

So THAT'S why the pictures matched the stories! It was...odd, knowing that the pride's stories were all pictures on rocks, as well as words and memories. When the other pointed out a little picture she looked...and nodded. "There's me...and my siblings." There really were a lot of them...But their numbers looked so small compared to the whole pride, past and present.

She looked to Mzaa and smiled slightly. "I'm Miale'ku'majivu, but Miale's easier. My mother and father are Azar and Khin'del. It's nice to meet you, Mzaa."

Mzaa watched as she took in the other small images and could recognize her family easily. That was good then, that the pictures were still just fine and easily viewed. Fia was a master artist, as far as Mzaa was concerned. Mzaa, as of late, only touched up the color on those that faded to keep them as bright as the sun.

"It is so nice to meet you Miale, your parents must be proud to have such a strong one as yourself in the family." She wondered, and hoped of course, if Miale was caring towards her family as Mzaa did of her own.

She missed having her children being so small, so eager to go into the world and learn.

"Tell me Miale, what do you wish to pursue in apprenticeship?" it was always good to ask and see what the future wished and yearned for.

Miale did show a little pride at Mzaa's compliment, nodding. "I hope so. I like making Mom and Dad proud." Hearing praise from them, or seeing approval in their eyes...that was one of the ultimate rewards in her mind. Mzaa's next question had her smile growing.

"I'm going to be a Tracker." She couldn't think of anything that would fit her better. It was a position that required a strong body, a quick mind, and a cool head...all things she strove for in herself.

"I am sure that you warm their hearts with all you do," Mzaa spoke softly. She flicked her tail, ears attent to the word that sprouted from Miale's mouth. "A tracker is a fine rank to strive for, so much built within one job." Though, Mzaa knew, as one grew older, sometimes things changed. Such things happened to her son and daughter, she only hoped no such thing would befall Miale.

"You'll succeed if you do your best and more. Strive for success and it will fall upon you," she nodded and lay her body in the sand. "Then, when you are older and have become what you wish for, your image will be seen with those of the trackers, there," Mzaa motioned her head towards the other slab a few meters away.

Fia would most likely be the one to create the image.

"Let your wings carry you, Miale," and a spark illuminated Mzaa's heart. True inspiration given by this child. She knew what she must strive for, and wished would come to pass.

Mzaa nuzzled her head against the side of Miale's cheek, "It is never too early to start. Let your dreams come to fruition, Miale."

Thank you Mzaa spoke, and she smiled.

Tomorrow would dawn a new day. She had plans of her own now.

The praise from the Historian made Miale feel...happy. It was nice to have an adult, especially one who kept track of the pride's deeds and mistakes, think well of her. And the Historian was right...she'd seen the pride in her parents' eyes before.

Her golden eyes looked to the slab Mzaa indicated, her ears taking in the words that went with it. To be among the other trackers...that would be wonderful. "I will do my best." She smiled, determination in her eyes. She was the quiet one among her siblings...but her fire burned deep, and just as hot as any other Firekin. "Thank you for talking with me." Maybe, one day in the future, she could tell her own cubs of the mysterious lioness who painted the first pictures of the Firekin's history.

"I know you will do wonderfully, so much better than I, I'm a bit beyond the prime age for tracking," she said with a light laugh. She flicked her tail, smiled, she looked to the stone slabs, to MIale, she had an idea.

"Talking makes me quite happy, I can't do too much as Fia, my apprentice-the other historian has much taken over for me, I'm a bit old, in case you couldn't tell," Mzaa said with a wink. She pushed herself to stand and took a few steps, "Come, I may have something to show you that will help. If you wish."

Miale giggled, nodding. "You may be old, ma'am...but you've still got a fire." It was like her own...it burned deep, instead of right on the surface. She watched the old lioness curiously, then followed after. "What is it you want to show me?"

Karana'Mzaana walked a little way until they reached the stone slates that jutted up from the hot sands. Each had a story, had a history, had a purpose. She smiled when she saw that Fia had touched up some of the fading paint. The sand could wear it down now and again, the vibrancy turning dim.

"This one, may be of use to you dear," Mzaa said pointing with a paw.

"This one holds images of the different ranks, or positions in the Simo, hunter, historian, storyteller, and here, tracker," she touched her paw gently, a little higher than Miale's height.

"Although they may only be images, perhaps from them they may help you on your quest, Miale."

Miale followed close behind the old lioness, curiosity in her golden eyes. Those same eyes turned their attention to the area Karana indicated, and her eyes grew wide. Oh! The little Firekin scoot closer to the slab, sitting herself down in front of it, tail twitching behind her as she examined it. Then she smiled and looked to Karana. "Thank you. For showing me this." In a small way, it helped. It was...different, seeing it recorded for all time on stone.

Mzaa smiled and nuzzled Miale's head softly, "anything to help. Although it does not do well to just see sitting images all the time," she explained drawing back, "but, it does give you an idea of who to seek out when looking to further explore your potential.

Never give up on what you want Miale, let your passion burn like the light of the sun, always."

She felt content, Miale gave her that, and for that, Mzaa was glad.
