Tannin had risen early this morning, greeting the morning sun with a set jaw and a determined stance. Today was the day he went on his journey to become a full fledged knight. His father had taught him the ways since he was but a foal, but there were some things one could only learn and achieve by their own power. Today was the day he would take his first step, as a budding knight.

He had bade his father farewell, though it had been hard, not only for him but for Nightmare as well, who had watched over Tannin since he had come out of his basket. It would be odd, leaving his father alone, who had always seemed more of a broken spook than anything...but he was strong, he wouldn't dare worry for his father who had taught him everything he knew. He cocked his head to the side, peering through the dragon skull mask he wore proudly, the trophy of his first battle. But it would take more than shiny armor and pretty trophies to be a knight...he needed to make a name for himself, he needed someone to follow and when he finally amassed the strength and achieved his own personal level of knighthood...he would return home to his proud and rather silly father.

But for now...it was on to wherever the road would take him. He pawed the dusty ground with a skeletal hoof and set off at a good canter along a winding road that led from the mountains he grew up in, down into the valleys and lands he had never set hoof in...this was the start...this was his beginning

Kaiya picked her way slowly over the plains, looking bit battered and worn. She'd been on the road to recovery after a rather vicious attack from a stubborn kalona. He hadn't taken kindly to her words, or her preaching, and wasn't up for any sort of debate. While she had done her best to respect his wishes and retreat, there were others within his herd that weren't willing to risk the angeni's presence. She had held her own, and had given them their space, but the wounds her flank and sides sported, as well as the stiffness in her joints and missing feathers spoke of the battle. They had left their own warning and was one which would take a few weeks to heal.

Oh well.

It was just part for the course when it came to her work. The damned weren't going to save themselves, after all, and would never know of the goodness they could possess without being given a chance. And though many drove her away, she also knew her words occasionally lingered. That kalona had heard everything she'd said, and perhaps the spirits would allow him, or another of his herd, to realize they did have a choice. Just because they were carnivorous didn't mean they had to be evil or murderers. . . . There were other options, and the choice was theirs, if only they could embrace it.

So Kaiya would return, after her wounds healed some, and after they had time to digest her words. Just because she didn't succeed now didn't mean she would throw in the towel and chalk them up for a loss. Oh no. Kaiya rarely gave up hope, even when it looked so terribly bleak. For now though, she decided it was time to find a healer, or at least travel the easier roads. While flight wasn't impossible, she didn't want to push her shredded wing and as such kept both sets tucked against her back.

Step by step, the mare allowed her hooves to fall where they wished, heading in no particular direction. Water sounded good, to quench her thirst and remove the dust from her coat. But until the spirits granted her such a boon, she'd just have to carry on. For the most part, the lands were quiet this afternoon, so it was easy to pick up the sound of movement not far behind her.

Head wings flaring a bit, the angeni paused in her walk, half-turning to see who the gods were sending her way. Kaiya truly believed that the spirits controlled much in the world, and no meeting was purely coincidental. Soquili met one another and crossed paths for variety of reasons. . . So who could it be that approached?

Tannin had only gone a few miles out when he noticed something a bit...odd, on the ground. Mixed in with the dust of the road was a rusty red color...the color of dried blood. His brow wrinkled under his skull mask, blood was not ever a good sign, because one could never tell how it happened. Was it an accident? Was the creature prey or predator in this situation...blood, he knew, was the sign of a struggle, a battle, wounded were always aplenty in battles. He set his jaw, he had never liked seeing things in pain, be they good or bad folk, though...he had to remind himself that he was an aspiring knight, good would always prevail and bloodshed was, at times, necessary, pain was always saddled alongside justice.

He noted grimly that there was a trail, scattered but definite, of blood drops in the dust, and as he followed he noticed that some were less dry than others, perhaps he was getting close. He just hoped that it would not be a wounded beast or something of the like, he had no desire to get into a battle this early in his training. His nostrils flared as he marched on strongly, knowing whatever he was following was close, and he was there to assist however he could. He turned a bend, his green eyes bright and ready for anything...or so he thought.

He found himself practically rooted to the spot, his skeletal hooves refusing to move an inch from where he had planted them in the ground as he stared at possibly the most beautiful mare he had ever laid eyes on in his short life. He had not traveled many places in his foalhood, he had grown up in a dark forest and had stayed and trained there, so never had he encountered many other species, especially not angeni.
He stared at her thinking she certainly must be one of those creatures the two leggers spoke of...angels, he opened his mouth and nothing came out, but then... he blinked and truely SAW her. The blood was coming from her! He cleared his throat and eyed her carefully, making sure he made no sudden moves, as he might startle her. She was wounded, he winced a bit as he noted her shredded wing and the blood stains on her hooves and flank, was she really ok?

" Uh...Hello miss...i followed your trail, you are leaving...i mean, you are hurt. Do you need any help? i know a few poultice's for such things...

While Tannin rounded the corner, surprised by Kaiya's obvious presence, of all the creatures Kaiya had thought she might meet this afternoon, a skeletal soquili hadn't been anywhere near her guesses. While she was used to meeting creatures of all sizes, shapes, and colours, mutants still were a bit of a rarity. Especially mutants with such obvious and unusual deformities. Despite her inward surprise, she gave no outward visual, except a slight raise of a brow followed by a warm smile.

Who was she to judge, after all?

Every soquili, from the most pure and tender of hearts, to the most evil and wretched of individuals deserved respect, kindness, and love. Many of those with dark agendas sneered at her warmth, dubbing her foolish or naive. But Kaiya was neither of those things, and she had lived a long life and knew her place amongst the Kawani and amongst those, both good and bad. Every light cast a shadow, and hope and faith had never hurt anybody. She would save those she met, she would give options to those who felt cornered and defeated, for those who didn't know any other way.

The stallion before her hadn't attacked her though, and was seemingly stuck in place. Outside of his skeletal hooves, he wore armor, and his eyes seemed to harbor a faint sort of glow. Unusual, but nothing that put her one edge. If he had wanted to attack, he could have done so easily. Unless he was a proud sort, one who flaunted his prowess. . . Either way, Kaiya knew she would quickly find out.

"Salutations," she greeted, her voice warm and welcoming, filling the silence of his surprise. Thankfully, he soon found his voice, and started questioning her health. For a moment Kaiya did look surprised, before glancing over to her sides studying her wounds. The edges were healed, but some of the deeper wounds still bled and oozed. "Oh dear," she chuckled, completely brushing off his concern and her own well-being with a shake of her head. "While I appreciate your concern, I fear I'd be wasting your energy . . .energy you could spend on someone who truly might need you assistance. These wounds here are ugly, but will heal with time. I'm afraid I'm so used to being in such a disheveled state I forget others aren't quite so accustomed to such a thing." Kaiya dipped her head in apology, her silver and gold duel toned gaze looking back up at him.

He reminded her, vaguely, of her chivalrous companion and young ward, Galahad. He hadn't been covered in armor or any such thing, but he had never hesitated to question her health, and if she ever was in need of healing. "I think you though, sir, for you concern." It was true. Not many were often concerned with the angeni, but such was how it should be. Outside of putting herself in the way of saving those in need, she knew her importance wasn't in her presence, but in her work.

Tannin fought against the rude desire to stare at the mare, she was very warm and inviting, she had an air about her that he simply could not place, but having never met one of her kind before, he couldn't even BEGIN to fathom the wonders Angeni were capable of. Assuming things would make him seem a fool, and that was the very LAST thing he wanted to appear before this one! But she was still hurt and this brought him past her beauty and grace to the more pressing matters.

She spoke then, jarring him from his thoughts to stare at her anew, her voice was rich and warm like the rest of her, though really her golden coat swirled off somewhere around mid flank to something darker, though he would not be the one to point out oddities, being what he was. He nodded his head, his armor clinking in protest " greetings to you as well..." His brow wrinkled under his helm as she simply shrugged off and justified her wounds as a normal occurance...this was normal to her? That was worrisome. His father had always told him to fight for good, defend the pure and appreciate the fair...he wondered what sort of mare she was to have such cruelty happen to her...and so often.

He smiled awkwardly, his fangs poking out, making his gesture of kindness seem a little more than garish. " i do not see anything more important for my services, i am actually not yet ready to help anyone...not yet"

He tilted his head a little, regarding her through his mask.

" You're welcome...however...This is...normal for you...uhm?" his glowing green eyes locked with hers, behind the haze of the glow, simple concern showing " i'm terribly sorry...i have not announced myself...i am Tannin Nox, on my way to becoming a full knight...and you?" He stood solidly, a slight wind tussling his red mane as he continued, unconsciously, to scent the wind for the herbs to make a proper poultice for her wounds.

Kaiya studied the stallion before her as he spoke. He was a bit of an odd sight himself, what with his skeleton hooves. Was there pain where the flesh turned away from bone, she wondered? He didn't look to be in pain, but one could never tell. The wounds that she carried hurt but she learned to disregard the discomfort. Still, the stallion before her was an interesting sight, and she wondered exactly what the spirits above had in mind for sending him her way. Perhaps he was in need of guidance or council? He did admit to being a knight in training . . . . Hmm. Perhaps she should inquire more.

Dipping her head lightly, she gave the stranger another smile and added, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Tannin Nox. I'm Kaiya, Angeni of Redemption." The mare didn't often give out her domain swiftly, if only because the title sounded so stuffy! She hated to come off so formal and especially disliked others viewing her as if she were special. She wasn't, thank you very much. Yes, she was blessed by the spirits with a job to do, but she was no better off than anyone else. Angeni occasionally reaped a poor reputation, depending upon the individual. Still, considering this new acquaintance had given out his profession, she figured it was good of her to do the same.

"As for being wounded, yes, I'm afraid it often comes with the territory of attempting to save others." Kaiya's eyes glowed with a new warmth, despite the dark topic she was about to breach. She truly loved her work, even if it was difficult and frequently life-threatening. "Those that are most in need of my aide are often those that least realize it. Many become violent upon my approach or teachings, and as such, I frequently leave with a reminder of such meetings. Still . . . the scars on my body are worth it, even if those I meet never do turn from their ways." Such was the truth for the mare. She gave a piece of her heart to all of those she tried desperately to save. More often than not they dismissed her, drove her out, or attempted to kill her but . . . . Kaiya never forgot their faces, never forgot their hurt.

She was out to save the world, after all. "Ah, but enough of me." She once again dipped her head apologetically and gave a small flick of her bandaged wings in dismissal. "You say you are on yoru way to becoming a full knight. Tell me, sir, what draws you to such a profession? It isn't often a lad chooses such an old-fashioned lifestyle to call his own." There was curiosity behind her gaze, a gentleness and good humor. Kaiya greatly approved of knights . . .considering she even mentored one for quite a few years . . . . but she couldn't help but wonder about this new fellow!

She had asked Galahad the same question when he pleaded to leave with her, to study and train. Kaiya did wonder about Tanin though, and where his own hooves might fall in the future. Was he seeking glory? Was he seeking to devote his life to the calling? Did he want to do might for right? Hopefully she would get to learn more of the young stallion. At the very least she could offer some assistance, either by giving him some advice to take with him on his travels, or some names of knights that he might train with.

Tannin stood to attention while she spoke to him, her voice like music. So this was an angeni! he thought, he was totally entranced but outwardly, he did not show it beyond the brighter glow of his eyes. " Pleasure is certainly all mine ma'am" he bobbed his head, his armor creaking in protest, he sounded like a country bumpkin! he frowned a bit, thinking she would think less of him, but honestly, thats what he was! He didn't know much of the world besides training, dark woods and the few folk he'd encountered growing up. So naturally, he was as green as you could get when it came to meeting others, but that too could be learned! and with a inner nod to himself he snapped back to the conversation at hoof.

" I...suppose i understand, it is just very paining to see one such a you wounded, but...knights and lady knights do the same to save others" he smiled crookedly, an unsure expression. He watched her nearly glow as she spoke of her lifes work, how fevered she was to save others and despite her many sacrifices, which now that he looked closer, showed upon her glistening pelt, small scars criss crossing like spider webs upon larger ones. How hard she must have strived...only to be lashed out at. He frowned darkly, making him look quite a bit more fearsome than he wanted to. She was holy and set in her goals in life, how could anyone, evil or otherwise think of hurting such a mare, or her cause?

He nodded curtly, while his heart went out to her as a mare, whom his father had taught him were ones to cherish and protect, he also knew as a budding knight, that honor in what you did and sacrifice was necessary to protect as well. She was very much like that, a shining example for him in fact.
He blinked oddly as she turned the conversation to him, he shied a tad under his bone mask but answered her properly " I am indeed, or at least i hope to be. You see, i was raised in a deep wood by my father, who was a knight and vetran of many battles before i came along. He smiled fondly (and rather toothily), thinking of his bumbly creepy father, he trained me from a young age so i could protect myself and others, and show the world that we are good, despite our...ahem...appearances." He eyed her through the mask, watching her expressions carefully " It may be an "old fashioned" sort of deal, but i think it is my duty in life, my calling, i see knighthood as something that, when taken up, gains more respect and promises a good and honorable life, i do it to protect and i do it for my family.

He paused and blinked at her curiously as her eyes conveyed far more than anything else " Do you perhaps know other knights?" He flicked his ears forward, attentive and eager for what she had to say, what she had seen of the world, anything about her life really, though some bits, such as her injuries, raked at his heartstrings, he wanted to know.

Kaiya was touched that the stallion seemed so worried about her condition, but she was an older mare and she had lived through a lot. Getting scratched, bitten, chewed upon and beaten were part of the territory. Thankfully, she was hardy and strong, and could handle throwing herself in to the fray. Though she had no armor, like the stallion before her, she was quick on her hooves and disciplined in the art of defense. She was not an aggressive mare, and only rose up against another when it was absolutely necessary - to save someone in need, or to save herself.

Still, she could appreciate the stallions vigor who stood before her. There was a fire in his eyes, and desire to do right, to serve the world. He certainly seemed enthusiastic about her company, and from the way he spoke of his father, he seemed very proud of the cause. He seemed to be chivalrous, kind, and was already generous by giving her some of his time and offering to find herbs for her wounds. It was refreshing to meet another with such passion.

"It was good of your father to instill such morals within you and your family. You truly are a living representation of why I do the work that I do. From many soquili's standpoint, they might look upon you with fear and dread, and judge you before you have a chance to show your golden heart. But there are many others out there who weren't given the choice, who were rejected long before they had a chance. There is a lot of hurt in this world, even among evil, and I do my best to give the darkest of hearts a chance to redeem themselves." She smiled and canted her head, giving her head wings a little flare. "Thankfully though, there are knights like you who help spread the word of good and of justice. So thank you for devoting your life to the work of honor and chivalry." She dipped her head respectfully at the young stallion, giving him credit even if he was a bit green behind the gills.

"I do have a proposition for you, young Tannin. I know a great many knights, some old and retired veterans, some younger but having long since proved themselves dedicated to the art. If you would like to travel with me, I can take you under my wing until a proper mentor is found. I know of a good hearted knight whom I worked with for many years, though the journey is long and will likely take you far from this area. If you wish to travel with me, for awhile, I can offer the knowledge that I possess, and we can see what the spirits have in store for you." She gave another smile and shrug, "You can go where you wish, and leave whenever you desire, but perhaps a little guidance toward like minded individuals would suit you well."

Perhaps it was untoward, especially as they just met, but why not? She often took others under her wing, and it was easier bringing him with her as opposed to sending message back to Galahad and having him seek them out while so far away. The spirits had sent him to her for some reason, perhaps guiding him towards a mentor was it.

((I figure, since her knightly teachings are touched with spirituality and such, she would assume he'd want to find a more traditional knight to train under. But in their journey towards Galahad, and possibly even meeting him, if you want Tannin to conclude he'd like to continue his training under Kaiya he could do so. Who knows, Galahad might even encourage it, since Galahad traveled with Kaiya for years and years and years. : P But we can discuss details as we go.))

He knew she was a good measure older than he, and definitely more mature, he admired her for her inner strength and the ideals she had hinted at. How nice, he had thought, to be part of something greater than one's self, a cause!

Her scars were battle scars of a different type, she sought to clense evil instead of slay it and thus she was injured more times than enough, and while he could not see the reasoning she did, he still found reason to admire this strange and otherworldly goddess. She was a lady knight for sure, but instead of armor she wore the sort that covered the soul. It was truely...inspiring.

He smiled awkwardly, attempting to curb in his fangs " yes, my father is a good man, troubled, but good. " He nodded solemnly at her spot on description of how others viewed he and his father. It was very obvious they were different, scary, anyone would think they were evil sorts but he was doing his utmost to change that. His smile only grew brighter " you are correct, many i have met through my short years have met my father and i with fear and sometimes struck out at us blindly. So it is likely there are others that are indeed like us...some though are twisted so far i dont know..." he frowned a bit " i dont much like the idea of the darker ones...but i understand." He wiggled his nose, a little embarassed " well...i knew from a young age what i wanted to be...i just hope i can grow to help folks as you do."

He flicked an ear to attention " a proposition?" he echoed, listening intently to her musical voice. He listened enraptured at the thought of all the knights she knew, knights! he wondered fleetingly what sort of adventures these noble sorts had been through! It was all he could do to keep his jaw steady while she talked " i-i dont know what to say madame..." he indeed was at a loss for words, a chance meeting with a beautiful angeni on a simple road, and she had plopped all he had been searching for into his saddle! what more could an aspiring knight ask for!?
He thought about it for a good bit, traveling and training with knights would be wonderful, he could go so far...but this mare had given him a reason to look at things from a different perspective, he knew the way of knights, his father had told him all he knew, but she was something entirely different.
He set his jaw, determined, and spoke " Ms Kaiya, if it wouldn't be too much of a burden, i would love to meet these aquaintances of yours, they would indeed help me on my journey..." He stared unblinkingly at her, his green eyes a mite brighter than before, fueled by his determination " ...but not now, for now, if you would allow it, may i travel with you for a time?"

HE very much wanted to follow the shining light only she could see and follow her, knowing he would be walking a path of goodness. He could learn a lot from her, that much was certain to him. Later he could ask to meet these knights she had told him of, this meeting had been brief, but it seemed almost destined.
He smiled, perhaps fate was shining for once, on "the black knight" as he had been called at home. And under his armor and spooky exterior, hope bloomed in his heart.

It both surprised and amused Kaiya that the fates had sent another knight her way. She knew many in her line of work and had met just as many whom had a strong desire and yearning to do good and support chivalry. Apparently, the spirits thought her useful when it came to guiding such young souls, and it seemed as if Tannin was no different. While he physically gave the appearance of something darker, from their few moments together she could easily tell that his heart was pure. There was passion hidden in his words, and a drive to do a greater good among the world in his spirit. He would likely go far if he could keep such passion even during the difficult moments and let downs. Life as a knight wasn't all happy endings and fair maidens, after all.

"You were lucky to be raised under such a strong influence as your father," she condoned, giving a nod at the youth before her. "There are many whom may have turned bitter or cold against others after such unfortunate meetings. It sounds as if you were saved such a fate." She nodded appreciatively at the ebony male, a warm smile on her features. Kaiya truly was pleased to hear of such a thing, despite the misfortunes he and and his family may ahve suffered due to their looks.

Unfortunately though, it was true that there were many whom were as cold and bitter and cruel as their bodies. The angeni made it a point to meet many despicable creatures, but did her best to understand and relate where they came from. There were some out there whom could never be saved - the skinwalkers were too far gone for any to save. But there were other breeds . . kalona were typically a corrupt lot, but even the darkest of hearts could be reasoned with and she knew many whom suffered conflict due to their race. Prejudice and judgement were terrible things, and yet it was a primary color of the world in which they lived.

While Kaiya wasn't sure whether or not the young stallion would accept her offer, what she didn't expect was him to request travelling with her. While she had grown accustomed to others taking up her stance against the world, and had found a wonderful companion in Galahad for years as she mentored him, she never would have thought she might gain another. So this was why the spirits drew them together. . .

Head wings flaring slightly in surprise, the mare gave a small chuckle and a little shake of her head. "I am honored that you think so highly of me, even after this short acquaintance." She dipped her head at him with a light formality, before adding, "But are you certain? I am no knight, though I do believe and encourage chivalry. I am no seasoned warrior, and many of my battles are fought through the mind and the spirit. I seek out those in need and do what I can to encourage them to embrace good, and to see there is always a choice and another way. . . Is this truly a life you path you wish to walk for the time? I would hate to waste your time," she added gently, her small smile unwavering.

She had no objection taking on another to tutor, but she did worry her life might not add up to the valor and glory he desired. There were many hardships in her line of work, and she was quite a spiritual being that often encouraged hope and faith. While she never would force Tannin in to such beliefs, she wanted him to be aware of what her life often consisted of.

He smiled " yes, my father is a great stallion, though not many have stuck around to notice it. He's always been strong enough to withstand the wary natures of most folk, he taught me to do the same...i only hope that wherever my siblings may be, they also have been lovingly taught that."

He felt her smile warm his very soul, she was a good, kid, JUST creature, just as he thought she was. He knew what horrors she had to face, and that was a milllion time what he'd ever have to deal with, he knew how strong she was.

He smiled even wider at her expression of surprise, even the little wings on her head stood up! " of course madame" he nodded his head in a knightly bow " i am certain, it's a ...gut feeling lets say" he looked up at her, his green eyes bright behind his ghoulish mask " you may be no knight, but Ms Kaiya, you are as noble as one, and journeying with you may just be what i'm searching for. And it's not even remotely possible, that it could be a waste of time."

He had his own path to follow, he wasn't asking for a knight, simply a just teacher, one to learn from on the road, maybe one day he would find one along the way, but he knew her to be great, even from this short of an encounter, he could feel it. If that was any sort of belief, he would willingly go along with it, find something new within itself. If knights were meant to fight against evil, maybe going with her he could find a way to change evil BEFORE he had to fight it...or at least try to protect her against the worst of it.

Kaiya hadn't expected to find a new companion after she and Galahad had parted ways, but then again, she never had expected to find a companion period. The angeni had known, even as a young filly, that her life's work would be the most important task she could ever fulfill. She had made a vow to devote herself to the good of others, to offer change and a way out for those lost in the darkest and deepest of evils. While her vows had never wavered, when she walked amongst the Kawani she had never expected to become a mentor, as well as mother, to a variety of soquili.

Oh, how the spirits did indeed wish to meddle in her affairs!

Still, if they desired to send a new knight-in-training her way, than so be it. She wouldn't question their wishes, their guidance even if she sometimes didn't entirely understand. She was sent here to meet Tannin, and it appeared as if his wishes and desires were sincere. She had mentored Galahad, and he had turned out to be a lovely companion as well as a gracious healer. But he had his own life to live, and she had wished him well and sent him off. She had meant to return to him after some personal business had been taken care of, but had heard that he was following a path he had never expected. . . and with a mare in tow.

But this ebony stallion before her seemed to want nothing more than to learn of her ways. She would offer him her wisdom, her advice and share the knowledge she had gained over the years. Dipping her head at the stallion, she gave a small nod at his words. "Very well then, my good sir. As this is your desire I will gladly take you on and teach you what I know. I travel rarely with a destination in mind, unless I hear of a great need or am summoned; but your company will be a refreshing change and I shall hope that you will someday walk away satisfied with the knowledge and information I can offer." Her words were humble, gentle, and modest, but that had always been Kaiya's way.

It had been such a long time since she had taken on an apprentice. Galahad had been younger than the stallion before her, but that had been years prior and she could hardly remember how things had begun. Well, there was no need to preach at him, and certainly no rush or time limit. He had no where to be and she herself was walking only where she felt called. Glancing up at the sky, judging the time of day and how many hours they had until night, she gave him a smile.

"Well then, shall we continue onward? We have much to learn from one another, but thankfully, have time on our side." Giving her tail a small flick, Kaiya began her slow walk the way she had originally been headed, relaxed and composed.

Though he was no expert on the full range of emotions a body could have, it felt like his heart had nestled itself in his throat and in its place was a glowing ball of JOY. He had finally found someone to teach him their ways, a being so radiant and set on her path that he would have followed her, even if she had forbidden him to come along. " Ms Kaiya, i am honored to walk alongside someone such as you." he smiled and his eyes glowed merrily inside the darkness of his helm. He bowed his head so low his helm nearly came off, his red and black hair spilling over his face " Thank you for this opportunity, i will not fail you."

He raised his head and tilted his head slight, his mask settling back into it's place " Yes, Lets" he replied, trying to keep a professional tone but clearly failing, the feeling akin to that of a colt on his birthing day. "We have plenty of time indeed~ " he smiled back at her and fell into step at her shoulder, his hooves leaving deeper prints in the dirt than they had before, afterall, these were the first steps to being a true knight. And he would remember them well.
