Laying in the lush grass, eyes half closed Oloneric was enjoying the nice quiet and warm day. Mother was off somewhere else, hunting down his brother Syrrin more than likely, which left him in the care of his grandfather. He had chose not to wander off with his brother, but it had been hard to say no to Syrrin as his brother was very good at convincing him to come along. Oloneric usually did, and they usually ended up in some kind of trouble, so today he decided to lay about. His green hide allowed him to blend in with the grasses which was great for when he didn't want to be bothered by the other herd members. They just needed to watch their step when moving around.

A butterfly fluttered by and the small colt lifted his head, watching it curiously with large eyes. The colorful insect flit this way and that way, and he wondered just what it would be like to fly. His aunt Mercy could fly, but she was very different from the rest of his family - and very large as well. As the butterfly began to fly off towards a patch of flowers not far away he considered whether to follow or not. If he wasn't careful he could wander too far and get lost or in trouble, but he really did want to see where the thing was going and just what it would do once it got there. After a few moments of indecision he noticed the butterfly was starting to get away from him, if he didn't follow it now he would likely lose it.

Pulling himself to his hooves Oloneric glanced around him, he didn't see grandfather about, maybe he was off talking with one of the other herd members. So he decided to follow the butterfly, though anyone that would come across him while doing so would notice the hesitation in his steps as if he was unsure if he was doing the right thing or not. It didn't take long before he reached the flower patch and the butterfly settled down upon a soft pink flower. Oloneric came to a stop a little ways away and lowers his head a bit, studying the butterfly closely. Just what was it doing on that flower?

Cheveyo had thought his grandson to be sleeping and had indeed gone to take care of a small herd emergency. Upon his return however he found that the colt must have either woken and wandered off a bit or hadn't been sleeping in the first place. Olo was such a calm natured fellow that such a mistake was easy to make. He was practically the complete opposite from his mother at this age...and his brother for that matter.

In any case the boy was certainly not where Chev had left him and so he would have to go in search of him, glancing about he saw what he though to be little hoofprints and headed in that direction. Chev doubted that the colt had gone very far, Olo really wasn't the type to wander and lo and behold Chev was right - he'd only gone a little ways before he spotted the green hide of his grandson. "Olo! What are you looking at?" He questioned the colt.

With his concentration so deeply set upon the butterfly Oloneric failed to here his grandfather approach so when the voice came from behind him the green colt let out a squeak of surprise before turning around. Oh it was just grandfather and that let the colt blow a sigh of relief. "There's a butterfly." He said and then quickly turned his head about to look for it again, afraid that his earlier outburst might have scared it away. While it wasn't on the flower it had been on he did see the insect a moment later on another flower. "See, it's right there." He pointed with his muzzle as the butterfly sat upon a pale yellow flower.

Watching the insect for a second Oloneric tilted his head to the side as a long...thing came out of the front of the insect and delved deeper into the flower. "What's that?" He questioned his grandfather as the insect drank the nectar. "What's it doing?" He'd never seen a butterfly or anything else do that. Sure other sniffed flowers and occasionally ate them but he had yet to see anything like that. His little tag wigged back and forth as he watched the butterfly closely, it flapped it wings gently moving to the next flower and repeated the process that it had just done at the previous flower.

A butterfly..of course it would be a butterfly that got the boys attention and following the colts excited motions Cheveyo did indeed spot the insect, a rather nicely colored one too...though the flower left something to be desired, there were nicer looking ones nearby.

Of course the butterfly wasn't exactly interested in looks and Chev knew plenty of things that looked horrible but tasted quite good. "Well he's eating Olo, the tube is called a proboscis and they use it to suck the nectar up from the inside of the flower, it's what they eat" He explained patiently - at least Olo expressed a bit of an interest in nature, Chev himself was rather fond of the word around him and wouldn't mind having someone else around to talk about such things with.

While his eyes remained glued to the butterfly Oloneric was indeed listening to his grandfather. The fact that the colts ears were turned around to point towards Cheveyo spoke of that. Nodding slowly he watched as the butterfly continued to drink from the flower. "Proboscis." He said in a fascinated tone. It was a funny word to say and yet it had such an important role in the butterflies life. The butterfly flapped it's wings, moving to the next flower in the patch and extended it's proboscis once more. "Do other animals have proboscis' grandpa?" He asked finally tearing his eyes away from the butterfly.

Of course that didn't last too long and a few moments later he was watching it again. This time however the insect took to the air, clearly having gotten it's fill of nectar it was on the move. Flitting overhead the butterfly circled once and then started to fly away. Letting out a bit of a disappointed sound Oloneric took about two steps in a short lived attempt to follow the insect before stopping. He knew he shouldn't, he shouldn't have even followed it the first time but his curiosity and thirst for knowledge had got the better of him. Now he knew better. Plus who knows where it would go or how far it could fly. Turning around Oloneric once again faced his grandfather. Well...what else could he learn today? Instead of asking that question Oloneric just looked at Cheveyo with a curious expression on his face.

"Perhaps some other insects" Chev allowed with a fond look at the colt who was so intently studying the butterfly "Perhaps you should inspect a few others to see when you find them" He suggested, that might keep the boy busy for a while some day while he was on his own with nothing to do. "You mu be very careful no to hurt them however - Insects are very delicate things" He reminded Olo - he could only imagine the colt weeping if he accidentally managed to kill one of his subjects.

He was about to remind the boy that his mother would no doubt be returning shortly when the colt stopped of hi own accord only to stare at him with a curious look on his face. "Why don't we walk back home and on the way we can see how many different insects you can spot" He suggested, there would surely be allot of insects on the way and it would make the trip go b far faster then the endless rambling questions Olo's brother always went on with.

Now Oloneric wanted to check every insect he came across to see if they too had a proboscis. Of course his grandfathers next words had him worried. Insects are delicate, oh dear now he would have to make sure he didn't hurt any insect. Glancing down at the ground Olo made sure there wasn't any insects that he could see then turned his attention back to his grandfather. "Okay. I hope we see lots of different insects." His enthusiasm to learn hadn't died down a bit but there was a that fear that he would step on a bug on the way back.

Turning Oloneric faced the way they would need to walk in order to get back home. But what if there was an insect in their path. With his head held low Oloneric looked closely at the ground before taking his first step. And then he looked again before moving his other hoof. Oh it would take them forever to get home like this and he looked quite ridiculous the way he was high stepping, hesitating and then stepping again. However he just had to make sure there was nothing that could be stepped on before setting his hoof down.

"Grandpa...I don't want to hurt them." He paused in midstep, hoof held high as his eyes stared at the ground. How would they ever get home if he had to worry about stepping on a bug that might be in their path.

Chev had to laugh just a little bit as he watched Olo take his first few steps towards home - it would be well into the next day before they got there at this rate but Chev wasn't to worried about that, he was far to amused by the colts antics to worry abut anything like that. And it was so endearing the way the colt was worried about hurting the bugs, most Soqulli didn't bother to worry about such things and Chev took it as a sign of his Grandsons large heart that he was. He would grow up into a fine young stallion - Chev was sure of it.

"Well they are small and delicate, certainly they would be hurt if you steppe on one" He agreed, making a big show of peering at the ground himself before glancing back at his grandson "But most insects are very very fast - or they live in areas that we don't step on - like under branches and rocks, the fast ones move out of the way and others you don't have to worry about"

It was quite clear that Oloneric became extremely relieved when grandpa explained to him that most bugs were fast enough to move out of the way. Imagine having to go your whole life checking under your hoof constantly to make sure there wasn't a little critter underneath it. That would be horrible. Now that he could relax a bit more while walking Oloneric took on a more calm and less comical gait. However he still kept his eyes on the ground so that he could spot any insects that were on the way home as that was part of the game that they were currently playing.

"How many insects are there grandpa?" He asked, wondering just how many insects could possibly exist in the world. Before he could ask another question a large dragonfly buzzed by in front of them. "Look there's one!" Oloneric practically shouted and pranced in excitement. One insect found plenty more to see on their way home. "Do all insects fly?" So far the two he had seen today did.

Well this wouldn't take nearly so long now Chev thought to himself a his grandson adopted a more typical gait...and then bombarded his with questions. Chev feared that in encouraging this interest in insects he might have awoken a monster in the young colt - everyone would be constantly badgered by insect questions. Well...there were worse things the colt could be interested in right? Bugs were relatively harmless in the grand scheme of things.

"Oh there are many many different types" Chev responded "Far more then different types of Soquilli, Why I think you could look almost your whole life and still maybe not see them all" He told his grandson with a smile "But no they all don't fly..some of them crawl upon the ground and some swim in the water"

More types of insects than Soquili, well that was a lot of different types of bugs. Oloneric greatly wished to see as many of them as possible, though found it somewhat disappointing to know that he may never see all of them. Of course his attention was truly grabbed at mention of swimming insects. He loved to swim but had never seen swimming insects, perhaps he scared them away, next time he was at the stream he would need to look for them. However now they were headed home and he needed to not become too distracted. But...there was one thing on his mind and Oloneric just had to ask.

Looking up towards his grandfather as they walked along Oloneric's ears flicked slightly. "Grandpa," he said a bit hesitantly, "is father going to visit soon?" Father didn't come around too often and it had been a while since he last came here and Oloneric yearned to see him again.

Chev and Olo had made some fairly good time back towards home now that the colt was no longer worried about stepping on bugs along the way - instead he seemed quite interested in running off to look for more...or so Chev thought until he asked that one last question, his pace faltering slightly Chev looked over at his grandson.

"I'm not sure" He told Olo truthfully and with a bit of a sigh - oh he was pleased the boys father made the effort he did it was true but a part of him wished that his daughter had found a true and proper mate to raise her children with - one who would be around all the time to help out. "But perhaps your mother will know" He added in a brighter tone before Olo picked up on his depressing tone "Why don't you run ahead and ask her?" He encouraged

Oloneric couldn't be one hundred percent certain but he thought that grandpa's face looked sad there for a moment. Well whatever it had been the look was gone a moment later and the light color stallion had a happy tone in his voice. Olo's ears flicked slightly in though but smiled widely. "Oh...okay." Yes, mother would know when father was to visit next, there was no doubt in his mind. And with that thought in mind, mixed with the encouragement of his grandfather Oloneric trotted forward, now more than ever eager to get home, leaving Cheveyo behind.

Watching the colt sudden;y trot off in a hurry Chev had to laugh a bit and shake his head - how easily the young could be pleased again - if only it were so with everyone else. PIcking up his own pack Chev followed his grandson back to their home and found himself hoping that Syn would have an answer the col would find pleasing.

Despite Orrin's lack of presence sometimes Chev had the feeling that the stallion did the best that he could for his children and so he tried not to fault him overly much on it - but it was hard sometimes... especially when Olo asked questions like he just had. Snorting Chev tried to put such thoughts aside and return home in good cheer.
