Kalinka Kovak was not a girl you wanted to wake up while she was getting her beauty rest - and certainly not now that she needed much more of it. However, Howl had never been one to follow the rules, and this was probably what resulted in a rather rude awakening for Kali as the phone by her bed rang obnoxiously in the middle of the night. At first, she simply knocked it off of the cradle and let it ring under her bed, muted by the mattress until the inevitable silence came as whoever it was hung up.
But that was not the end of it. Oh no, it certainly was not.
It rang again. And again. And again, and again, until the redheaded mage had no choice but to snatch it up and snarl into the phone.

"I don't care who the ******** you are, it is three in the morning, and whatever your issue is, it can WAIT!"

Her rage was quickly muted, though, by a pathetic whimper on the end of the line. She paused, and listened as Howl choked out that he needed to come over, then hung up. For a few moments, she stared at the phone, wondering what could possibly have been so bad that he'd risk being scalped. (Which she had threatened people who woke her on more than one occasion.)

Whatever it was, she knew, it had to be serious.

So, out of bed she slid, grabbing a house coat and wrapping it around herself as she toddled out of her room and down the stairs to wait for Howl's arrival at the door.

Howl had known Kali would be angry when he called, but he needed to get away from his house for a while. He hadn't slept very much at all in the last week, and he looked it. Rings were forming under his eyes, rings that would probably take several nights of sleeping to be rid of them. Not that Howl cared; for once he wasn't worried about his appearance. For once he didn't care whether people saw him in his pajamas; currently a t-shirt and a pair of shorts.

He didn't care that it was forty degrees, though he certainly didn't hesitate in getting to his destination. With a quick transportation spell, he was on the doorstep. Without pausing to knock, his hand went to the door knob. Surprised to find the door unlocked, he walked in, glancing around nervously.

He spotted Kali and instantly attached himself to her. "Kali," he breathed. "A lubbock's got Morgan!"

Aside from nearly jumping out of her skin when Howl ran into the house, Kali was unharmed as the wizard attached himself to her midriff.
"What? Howl, hang on..." She pried herself out of his vice like grip and closed the door, looking over at him incredulously.
"What are you talking about, a lubbock? There was only one, and you got rid of it. Are you okay?" Clearly not, she kicked herself mentally, and moved back over to cup his face in both hands.
"What's wrong with you? You look terrible." Which was surprising in itself. Howl, looking terrible? It was a shocking surprise, and enough of one to tell her that something was definitely, seriously wrong with him.

"Come here..." She pulled him with her to the living room and sat down on the couch, patting the space next to her. "Tell me."

"It came back!" Howl told her, bordering on hysterics. Now that Kali had pried away from him, he was twisting the bottom of his t-shirt. "It has Morgan, and that's why I wasn't able to summon him! There's a barrier, and--It was there, Kali! And the castle! It's in ruins. I knew it would be, with Calcifer and I gone."

He paused long enough to allow Kali to get a good look at him. "I know," he agreed. He did look terrible; he hadn't even taken the time to look in the mirror. Morgan was more important. Maybe Kali could--but no, she couldn't do magic in her condition. What would happen to Morgan, then? He reluctantly sat next to her, feeling the weight of his exhaustion hit.

"I haven't slept very well," he said, almost apologetically. "In a long time."

Kali held up her hands to stop Howl, already able to piece what had happened together.
"Howl, get a hold of yourself. You were dreaming." She reached over and touched his face again, though this time she pulled him into her lap, and a hug.
"Morgan wouldn't be in the ruins of your castle. As soon as you and Sophie disappeared, one of her sisters would have taken him in. So there's flaw number one in your plan. Flaw number two is that dead things don't come back to life. Ask Katia. She's tried. And third, you were dreaming. It was all just a bad dream..."
She didn't really have to ask why he hadn't been sleeping - and especially not after hearing an explanation like that.

"How long have you been having these dreams?" She asked softly, snuggling him closer. "They sound horrible."

Normally, Howl might have been embarassed about being pulled into his best friend's lap. That night, however--or was it that morning? he didn't protest. He should have known it was a dream; he felt silly, getting so worked up. It had seemed so real... It really had felt like he'd been back in Ingary; all the sounds and smells had been just as he remembered it.

"But--" he started, frowning in concern. Both Lettie and Martha were married to talented wizards; one whom he had trained himself. It was only logical to figure one of them had taken Morgan in. He worried then, about Michael and Martha having taken him; Martha's biggest wish was to have a large family with ten children; she and Michael had probably gotten started on that while he'd been away. Was Morgan getting enough attention, with whoever was taking care of him?

"It didn't feel like a dream," Howl muttered, allowing Kali to cuddle him. He knew better than to return the cuddles (what if Lance showed up? What if her mood suddenly changed on him?) "Three or so days," he added, answering her next question. "Tonight's was the worst though..."

Kali really wouldn't have given a hairy hampster's hiney whether Howl liked being in her lap or not, as she currently felt like cuddles were necessary, and was going to give him them whether he liked it or not.
Kind of like cuddle rape.
Regardless - she frowned back at Howl as he began worrying once more, shifting slightly and hugging him tighter.

"But nothing. It couldn't have been real..." She assured him, kissing his forehead in a rather motherly way. "It may have felt real, but it wasn't. It sounds horrible, though..." She looked down, concerned.
"Three days? Howl...why didn't you come before? I would have tried to help you find something to fix it.."

Slowly, Howl seemed to remember that he didn't give a rat's a** about what Lance though, and returned her cuddles. He kissed her cheek gratefully. He was lucky to have a friend--no, a sister, like Kali. Megan would have sent him away at once, perhaps calling him a drunk, perhaps telling him what a bum he was. Kali understood him.

And she was right. It couldn't have been real. The lubbock was dead, he and Calcifer had killed it. Morgan was probably with Michael and Martha, or Lettie and Wizard Sulliman. He was safe, then, if he was with them. "I didn't think of coming until tonight," the wizard admitted, leaning his head on her shoulder. "I wasn't able to find a spell to make the nightmares stop, so I thought they would go away eventually. They haven't though."

"Do you think I can stay here for the night?"

At that request, Kali stopped and bit her lip, mulling the whole thing over. Her relationship with Howl wasn't sexual in the slightest, but there were a number of people who really wouldn't give a damn. Her uncle and Lance were probably tied for first place in THAT race, and neither would react well to learning that Howl had slept in the house, never mind near her.
However, after a few moments, she decided she didn't care. Howl needed sleep, and if this would help him, she would damn well let him.

"Yes, of course you can. I can't help you with magic, but you can stay." She smiled at him, lacing her fingers through his hair.
"You'll have to stay in my room, and wait for my uncle to leave for work in the morning so he doesn't snap you in half, but you can stay. Come on." She shifted, intending to stand. "Let's head upstairs..."

"You shouldn't do magic in your condition," Howl reminded her, pulling away gently and crossing his arms. "You might accidently influence the baby, and--" well, the wizard had no doubts that Kali's son would be magical. With a mother like his, he was bound to be, even if the father was as unmagical as it was possible to be. There was definitely going to be some magical blood in the baby.

And Howl was going to offer to make him his apprentice as soon as the boy was old enough. "Show me where your room is?" If only he understood girls and sexual tendencies as well as he did magic. He might have understood why Lance would become angry, or why Viktor would snap him in half for finding him in the house.

"I know. I won't." Kali kissed Howl's forehead again, standing up from where she sat. "I promise."
Taking his hand, she tugged him after her up the stairs, stopping on the landing that lead to her room. She closed the door behind them, to avoid prying eyes in the morning, and headed for her bed, which lay beneath the window.

"Here. C'mon. You should really get some rest." She yawned, seeing the bed reminding her that she was still tired. She rubbed her eyes and shrugged off her house coat, crawling back under the covers and curling up, completely unconcerned about anything sexual with Howl. Hell, he still didn't know how babies were made, except that it involved two people and the woman was the one who gave birth.

Howl followed her, quite willingly. A warmth was filling him, and he was having trouble keeping his eyes open even as he followed her up the stairs. There was something else now, burning in his mind. Something more than nightmares, a curiousity, really. He settled down in Kali's bed quite comfortably, and stared up at the ceiling.

"Hey Kali? You and Lance are going to have a baby, aren't you?" he asked. "So. How'd it happen?" The monster that was puberty hadn't yet rose it's ugly head yet in Howl; the biggest issue with it so far had been his voice changing. It wasn't just that, though. He knew he had known the answer to his question, once upon a time.

Kali was warm, Kali was comfy, and Kali was almost asleep.
At least, until Howl opened his fat mouth.
Instead of yelling, however, her eyes snapped open and she stared at the wall, really not sure of what she was supposed to say in response to...well, that.
Cautiously, she turned and looked at Howl, as if she was trying to decide how to answer him. Or, whether to answer him.

Should she really be the one having this discussion with Howl? Probably not, Could she? Probably. Did she want to? No ******** way!
So, she turned back around and dropped her head on the pillow.
"Nope. I am not going there. Why don't you go ask Sophie to show you?"

That was, of course, bad advice. Most advice Kali gave while half asleep and cranky was terrible, actually.

"She'd hit me," Howl said, frowning slightly. "Probably with a pan of some sort. She's really quite violent when she wants to be, you know. Quite like you." The wizard yawned and curled up in the blanket. "She'd probably laugh at me, too. We have Morgan, so I assume that at one point, I knew how to."

Another yawn. He moved closer to Kali and put an arm around her, seemingly out of instinct. "Love you, Kali. Goodnight." He didn't fall asleep all at once though; one could almost hear the gears turning in his head. And naturally, sharing a bed with a wizard made said wizard assume Kali would be sharing breakfast with him as well.

"Well I'm sure it'll all come back to you in a great epiphany." Kali muttered sleepily. "You did know, and I'm sure you'll know again. Later. And not from me. You should really try to sleep...."
She looked back at him, and smiled slightly.

"G'night, Howl. I love you too,."

Certainly, anyone who didn't know of the sibling-like relationship they shared would be upset - however, nobody was watching, and nobody would be, so that didn't matter as the mage quietly began to fall back to sleep.
