BLEH. I'm in 8th Grade and I've been in a High School Band for the past 7 months. I've been in a program with them and have competed and had the complete experience. But there's a problem because I'm not zoned for that High School, I'm zoned for their cross town rivals. All my friends are going to that school but I'm like family at the High School I've been going too. I NEED HELP.

Is there any way to get a transfer?

Other than that, your friends will understand (should understand) if you end up going to the other school. You can still keep in contact with them and attend each other's concerts for support. :]

School rivalries, IMO, are really dumb when they get out-of-hand and people start hating each other over them. Friendly rivalries that encourage growth are good, but hateful rivalries are bad. If you end up in the rival band, do your best anyway, and encourage your friends to do their best too and see who comes out on top. (I assume this is for concert ratings and/or marching scores, but I could be wrong, lol)

I'd at least ask about getting a transfer, and apply for it if one is offered. I know leaving friends isn't an easy thing to do but this is a time when you have to look at what is best for you and your future. There are so many ways to keep in contact with people now that there's really no excuse for not talking to your friends, and, if you're zoned to go to school with them I assume you live somewhat close by to a few of them.

I hope this is a friendly rivalry and not a hateful one. Definitely talk to trusted adults if you can. Ask the band director at your current (middle?) school what their preference is and talk to the BD at the high school you've been working with for advice.

Good luck!

here is what I would do. look at the two music departments between the high schools. If they are about the same in quality, then go to the school with your friends (or whatever social circle you want to stay in). If they're not the same, then go to the school with the better department. You can always make new friends. And if you choose the school that you were not apart of that music department, you can always work your way back to the top.

I have a friend, who is not in band, who actually isn't in the same school zone as the high school we go to AT ALL. (Like a whole different state!) But I would not encourage you to do what she does, which is use another friend's adress. However, just go to the school that you think is best for you. If the one you've been playing in band with is the best, well, you already would have friends since they, as you have said, consider you as 'family.' If you wish to attend the school that all your friends go to, then that's fine also. But keep this little tidbit in mind. Everyone knows you at the school you go to now. Wouldn't it be a great experience to get to know new people when you start high school? The people you grew up with most of your life will know you as you, however much you show YOU instead of you. The people would not know the you your friends know, so you can gain confidence/be more outgoing/be crazy/be whatever and they would not know that they might be seeing the YOU you are. Just think about it before you really decide. And don't forget to bring in the most important people who come up with the final decision: Mom and Dad. Talk to them about it, too. They'll want what's best for you, as well. Just think about the pros and cons and you'll have an answer before you know it!
