Kibaazi was getting stronger with time, appreciating Alasiri's attentiveness towards her and in helping her get healthy. She was almost feeling up to moving out of the den that he had made them, or rather, perfected for them - but she didn't really want to. It was nice, not having to wander and wonder if she was safe - she knew she was safe in the den. Unfortunately, her mind would always go back to Majaliwa, out there somewhere on his own. She was safe, but he might not be. Her chest would always clench at the thought.

She shifted, and heaved a gentle sigh. She was out the front of the den, just resting by the entrance. Her belly was getting large, she mused, and winced a little as a rock poked the swollen stomach. Perhaps it was simply because Alasiri had been feeding her more, she thought to herself, but she knew that she would not have put on that much weight from pure eating alone.

She had told many women in her pride why they grew plump, but the idea of why she was growing big was laughable. Wasn't it? Oh, she knew she had opportunity to be pregnant, as she had had that fling with the sweet male who had come to her while she was picking herbs. It had been before she had started to get big, and she had grown rapidly in size after that.

She groaned, and lowered her head, resting her chin on her paws and closing her eyes. It was the only logical conclusion. But that wasn't the hardest part...How was she going to tell Alasiri? He had been so sweet to her, taking care of her, and how had she repay him? By getting pregnant and soon bringing lives into the world when she could barely take care of herself. He'd probably feel obligated to stick around for longer, to make sure she didn't hurt or lose her offspring. He'd already done so much for her, but she doubted he'd leave before she gave birth. She'd have to tell him...somehow.

Alasiri rounded the corner of the boulders that made up the solid back end of the den, the pouch rat he'd caught hanging limply from his mouth. He'd only done light hunting today, since yesterday he had brought down a large antelope and there was still some of it left.

He slowed his pace when he saw Kibaazi laying outside of their den, looking as if all the world rested on her delicate shoulders. Was something wrong? Was she ill? His expression worried, he padded up to her, leaving their snack by earthen wall he'd made to close off the opening to his bachelor den when Kibaazi had chosen to stay for a little longer while she regained her strength.

" Lady," his warm, rich voice rolled over her as he nuzzled her ear affectionately, " what is wrong? You seem sad, or in pain?" Alasiri placed a large paw around her shoulders pulling her close against his broad ruff, holding her gently. " I brought home a pouch rat, would you care for some?"

Kibaazi heard his footsteps approaching, as he made no attempt to be silent about coming back to the den. She raised her head, no longer startling when he nuzzled at her ear with obvious affection. Oh, he was such a good friend to her and this was how she had gone and repay him? By burdening him more with the cubs she was bearing? She lent against him when he put his paw around her, tugging her closer to him.

A gentle sigh worked free of her mouth. "Not physically, I'm not," she responded quietly, closing her eyes although her blind eyes saw nothing anyway. "Perhaps a little sore of heart, but nothing physical is ailing me..." she gave a laugh, that could almost be bitter but sounded slightly sad. "Oh, well there is, but it's not an illness."

She was pleased that he'd brought home something to eat, as she had been hungry before, but for now she didn't think she could stomach food. "Perhaps after we have spoken," she conceded, and wiggled a little, attempting to move away from him so that he did not feel smothered by her presence.

She opened her mouth to speak, but was unable to find words. How did you tell someone you were pregnant with a one-night-fling's cubs?

Alasiri frowned, concern in his eyes and in his voice as he let her go. He never held her against him if she did not wish his touch, and now he wondered if perhaps he had been far to free with her person which is why she wished to speak to him, " I am sorry if I am the cause of a sore heart Lady."

Respectfully, he took a step back and sat down, curling his tail over the front of his paws, " I should not be so...free with you. I know you are not...that we are merely friends." He did his best to keep the pain from his voice, but it still crept in around the edges.

" Please, speak. There should never be an uneasy silence between us. I am your friend Kibaazi, and your burdens are mine, just as my den and whatever else I may own, is yours."

Even my heart...especially my heart..

Kibaazi's eyes went wide and she sought out his paw with his, awkwardly finding it within being able to see it and since he had stepped back it made it harder to find. When she did find it, she placed hers over it gently. "Oh no, Alasiri," she told him hurriedly, "it is not you who makes my heart sore." She didn't want him to think he had done anything wrong, when he was the one thing that seemed right in her life at the moment, with even herself being led astray. "You are not too free with me, I fear I'm too clingy towards you, as you're my only consistency in this rogue life," she tried to explain, giving a frustrated noise when it didn't seem to come out right.

She closed her eyes, curling her tail around herself protectively as she tried to figure out how she could tell him the news. Perhaps it was better to just get it over with.

"I'm pregnant," she blurted out awkwardly, eyes closed and tail protectively coiled around herself, the tuffed end resting against her stomach. "I don't know why I did it, but the actions have left me with cubs and I don't even have a mate to care for them with me." She gave a quiet, pained laugh. "I've been thrown from my home, losing everyone I care about, blinded and now pregnant by a male who is not my mate." She had no mate, but in her pride, flings were rare and the male who impregnated the female would mate to her, simply to stop the shame which the actions caused amongst the pride. What was she going to do now?

Alasiri moved forward, reaching for her when she faltered finding his paw, but her next words stopped him short, and for a moment he was speechless. Than he saw her expression, and worse yet, heard the pain and fear in her voice.

He didn't think, he didn't have to. All he knew was that his Lady, his Kibaazi was hurting and was afraid. Before he could form any words he'd pulled her against him, laying his head over hers and keeping against his ruff.

" You have me Lady, I may not be your mate...but I will not leave your side. We will welcome the cubs together Kibaazi. You have a home, here. For as long as you desire it. Stay with me Lady, and let me care for you as I have been. Let me stay beside you, please..." Alasiri whispered the last, closing his eyes as he held her as close as he could, offering her his warmth and the promised strength of his paws.

Kibaazi hadn't really known what she had expected Alasiri to do when she told him. She didn't think he would react violently or poorly against her - he just wasn't that kind of male - but she hadn't expected him to pull her against him so gently, covering her head with his own.

She always felt...safe when she was tucked beneath his chin. Like the world wouldn't hurt her if she was close to him.

She felt her eyes mist slightly at his words and she tucked her face into his mane. He was too kind to her! He should be upset, cast her out! She got pregnant by a male who was not her mate, and yet here he was, holding her close and telling her he'd stand by her anyway - that he'd look after her, and them.

"You're too good to me," she said, her voice rough with suppressed emotions. "I...I don't want to burden you more, but you..." She sniffled a little, but fought back any tears. She would not cry - she blamed the hormones of pregnancy, she decided. That's what it was. "I don't know what I did to deserve you, but thank you," she told him, honestly ."Thank you."

Alasari smiled down at her, pulling her just a little closer, his heart swelling with emotions he knew he should not allow himself to feel for the blind lioness, but it was to late and he knew it. His heart was already hers, even if she could never be his. Ironic, he now knew how his twin had felt when she fell in love with a leopard, knowing it was doomed from the start. Perhaps what the Mualimu said was true, that twins shared the same fate.

The large male purred at her, comforting her with the warm, loving sound as she spoke, nuzzling her ear gently, " I could never be to good to you Lady, there is no such thing, and you are not a burden, nor will your cubs be."

Alasri chuckled, his tone gently teasing, " I guess this means I need to extend the west end of the den to include a nursery. I wonder if I could convince a meerkat or two to help with the digging...what do you think?"

Kibaazi wasn't sure how she had gotten so lucky to have Alasiri by her side. She relished in the comfort as he pulled her a little bit closer and she rested more fully against his side. He was so good to her.

His purr brought a smile to her mouth, and she continued to smile, albeit wistfully as he spoke of her cubs not being burdens, and how he would extend the den to include a place for them. She had been so lucky to find him, and she gave him a wobbly, watery smile - blaming the hormones for her sappy emotions.

"That sounds perfect, Alasiri," she whispered, leaning her head so she would be looking at where she felt him pressed against her, but she paused, and her smile faded slightly. "But don't work too hard - it's only temporary." She hated to remind him, hated to remind herself. "I couldn't...I can't travel while I'm in this state - or while the cubs are still small, but I...I can't give up on Maja. I promised him I'd find him and I can't let him down."

Her shoulders slumped. Her pregnancy would delay her finding Majaliwa for months.

Alasiri eyes filled with sorrow at her words, his ears laying flat to his head. He knew that his time with his blind lioness was no more then a few fleeting moments strung together, but they were his moments and he would take them.

Pulling her a littler closer, he kept the wistfulness from his rich voice, once more glad that she could not see. For he doubted even he was strong enough to be able to control both his expression and his his tone.

" You will not give up on him, nor will I break my promise to you about seeing you to his den. Nor will I see the cubs raised in anything but a den that is solid, safe, and well built. They will be cared for as if my own Kabaazi, so no more argument.

He licked the top of her head, "Now I better find some meerkats willing to work for some grubs or I will be digging till the cubs are adolescents." He nudged her shoulder gently, Go lay down and I will bring you the pouch rat I just caught and we can discuss the nursery once I return.

Settling her in the den with her meal, the large male went in search of meerkat labor, the thought of cubs heavy on his mind.
