As a pathetic attempt to revive the guild, I pose you this question.
We know how England is the basis for all things steampunk, and America can be based in much the same way. But what about other countries? What did the Spanish use? Istanbul? India? How about China and Japan? Even more, what of the Native Americans in teh American west?
Discuss!

During the time of which steampunk is based didn't it own part of the middle east, part of Africa, India, and the Eastern coast of America?

It did, but I'm talking about the people that inhabited the areas. The Spanish had a distinctly different style and manner of dress than England. And the Native Americans, how would have steampunk affected them?

I honestly have though of letting my mom do some beadwork on my goggle strap ^^;
And in Crimson Skies I did see an old style pilot's helmet with feathers attached.
So, I don't see why other cultures can't have their own derivatives.

I'll have to ask my friend what the book, is called but he was telling me about a book where the far east has all the steamy tech. I'll have to find out what it was called...
I think you could probably say most of europe would all be pretty similar in terms of steampunkyness with maybe some aesthetic differences but otherwise more or less the same. If you were interested in native americans and steampunk, check out the excellent role playing game Deadlands which has lots of background info about such an eventuality!
(Basically, the injuns use their magic to totally own all the machines)
African steam tech would be interesting.. Especially if they came up with it first. :p Or like.. The mongol air-ship horde!

Well, considering we learned black powder arts from the Chinese think of the number of improvements they could have done. I find the image of steampunked Hindu pantheon deities a fascinating concept.

That makes me think of Skies of Arcadia where each nation has their own distinctive airship style. You had your galleons, the far east country of Yafutoma had flying junks, the advanced nation of Valua had iron clad warships....

*comes back to life after long term hiatus* I love the idea of various cultures discovering steampunk, and what they would possibly try with it. Even better, what about mythological cultures? Dwarves (I flip every time I even think about this), Elves, Goblins, etc..

No, England did not own the eastern coast of the U.S. in fact, the american civil war is during the victorian era. U.S.-theme steampunk is what I like to refer to as Expansionist Steampunk. It sounds better than Wild West Steampunk.

Ha ha! I like it a lot actually. Though, personally I would add a little bit more of an Asian or Indian flare. I'm thinking more reds to match the staff, because that's a great piece in itself.
