The Library City was making its daily transition from "dark" to "darker", and Myopia was out earning his keep. Other City Folk milled about, going home for the evening or going out for the night, and the slender man with the antennae meandered between them, going from lamp to lamp.

... Or maybe from cafe to cafe. The man had spent the day inside leafing through some law documents for his schooling, and it had taken about all of his concentration to get through them all. He would definitely be hunting company for dinner, once he was finished illuminating the square.

Civic duty came first, though.

Myopia walked up to the next lamp, standing on his toes as he reached upwards with his torch to light it. It seemed a bit more crowded than usual, now that he got a good look around; just as long as they all stayed away from his elbows, for their own safety as well as his. The flame he carried was hardly a raging inferno, but one still had to be careful.

"Excuse me," he announced as he moved to the next lamp, the words slithering out of his mouth and ahead of him to indicate his intended path.

Dorian was hunkered down at the end of the lane, a bag of tool between his squatting legs. His goggles were pulled over his eyes and he didn't seem to care about the rising darkness or the fact that people were having to part around him. He was too busy hunched over his latest project.

It wouldn't be long now before he had it working. Those fools at the Society of Invention would regret refusing him membership. This time, Dorian's invention was going to work.

The lamp lighter winding his way up the street was unnoticed by Dorian. At least until the polite slither of words hit his ear. Dorian jerked his head up sharply and turned to glare at the intruder. This was HIS lamp currently and he didn't want it lit just yet.

"Wait! Don't you dare light this lamp," Dorian said, coming to stand, hands on his hips.. He was heads shorter than the lamp lighter, but he held his ground and stared up at the shadowy form. "I'm conducting a highly delicate experiment so kindly wait your turn!"

Myopia's eyes disappeared momentarily as he blinked in surprise. He stood very straight, torch in both hands, head cocked to one side and antennae curling forwards as he then took a moment to just stare are the Book Child there before him. The Children were not completely unheard of, of course, but still, Myopia did not expect to see them too terribly often.

What the young man actually said, though, appeared to register in the City Man's mind after a moment, and he quit his gaping to retort, "Your lamp? These lamps are city property, and I am one of the lighters in charge of this district!" Myopia wished, not for the first time, that he had a badge indicating the truth of his statement. He had a certificate somewhere in his dwelling, but he was not fully confident that he would be able to locate it quickly.

At the Child's explanation, Myopia cocked his head the other way. "Is this a delicate experiment upon the crowds of Eyncastor?" He felt someone brush by behind him; hardly the market during a sale, but it still did not seem like quite the appropriate place for something breakable and scientifically sensitive. ... Though he was not sure whatever it was the CHild was standing over looked quite like sociology.

He glanced around at the other lights, and then back to the fellow in front of him. He then asked, his font smaller, "Will you be done by the time I finish lighting the others?"

"Yes, my lamp. I don't care who you are. I am a citizen of the city after all too," Dorian replied as staunchly as possible despite that fact that he was craning his neck to look up at the city man and his written word. For barely a moment he seemed enraptured by the way the figure's antennae curled, canting his head and squinting at the appendages. The only thought in Dorian's head was that it would be very wonderful to create something that moved like that.

His mind was already halfway to his workshop before he realized that he was being distracted by something that was NOT his current project. "It is certainly not an experiment on the People. I told you, it's an experiment on this lamp." Dorian thumped the wrought iron pole happily, looking through the glass of the still dark insides.

"I suppose I'll be finished after that," Dorian added, his voice thoughtful. "Yes, that should be a sufficient amount of time I think." Grinning widely for the first time, Dorian tightened his goggles and turned back to his work. "You'll like what I've come up with. Hopefully it shall work!"

"Experiments on lamps," Myopia breathed, the words coming out a bit blurred around the edges as his mind was focused on considering the possibilities.

... And quickly shrugged them off. He would be around to see, if he was here lighting lamps in the square. And besides, science was hardly the man's specialty. Best left to the scientists.

"Just try not to break it, I suppose," he then cautioned, words clear again. "Or." Myopia leaned down slightly, and the next words came out smaller: "If you do, at least make it look nice. It has been a while since we had any artistic acts of vandalism."

He straightened a moment later, turning his head from one side then to the other to survey the crowd again. "Until I come back to this one," the man repeated, bobbing slightly at the knees as he moved off. "The lamps here get quite a bit of use. That means they go out all the more often. I bet you anything there is one here that's broken right now. So it's hardly avante-garde to leave one unlit on purpose...."
PostPosted: Sat Mar 26, 2011 4:30 pm

"You don't care if I accidentally break it?" Dorian asked softly in return, his voice cracking at the end in his excitement. Oh, this was very, very good. Now he couldn't get in trouble if he just happened to explode something! And he could make his vandalism artistic. He did that in the workshop all the time.

Feeling like an evil mastermind now, Dorian blinked at the City Man's back as he moved on, his mouth split into a huge grin. "Thank you, sir! I shall be done once you come back around," he called, waving his hand. What a silly fellow, he couldn't help but think. If so many of the lamps were broken, then shouldn't the lamp lighter look into fixing them? Well, Dorian MIGHT help with that, but it would be much later.

Now was the time for his experiment to take flight! With a bit more tinkering, everything was ready to go and he stepped back to survey the copper rod he'd run up the pole and into the glass case. Looking around, he shooed some of the City Folk away from the post, declaring it dangerous.

The outcome of his experiment was not what Dorian had in mind. For one brief moment when he'd sent the element of baron up the copper rod the lamp suddenly flared with a bright greenish light, overtaking all other light in the City. Five seconds later the glass of the lamp shattered in a loud bang that rang out over the entire quarter, extinguishing the ethereal light.

Dorian was left groaning unhappily, brushing glass bits out of his hair and ignoring the startled people around him. What in the world had gone wrong? He hoped the lamp lighter wasn't too unhappy about broken glass.

The green flash lit up all the buildings around him, and what seemed like the entire city. Nios jumped, and panic began to rise in his throat just as a glass-shattering bang reverberated from somewhere close by.

His first instinct was to run. Which direction had the light come from, though? A wave of city people and book children seemed to be convening towards a nearby lane. Hesitantly, Nios followed the crowd and arrived at a nondescript street, exactly like any other alley except for the blond book child surrounded by shards of broken glass and a wall of startled city folk standing around him, their voices a tangle of distressed murmurs.

He wavered between leaving the dangerous-looking scene and staying to satisfy his curiosity. Timidly, Nios touched the elbow of a man holding a torch and walking out of the crowd, hoping to catch his attention.
"Excuse me, sir. What happened here?"

Well, of course the lamp-lighter did something about the lamps that broke, but it was not his job to fix them. There were lamp-fixers for that. Myopia was always quite prompt about letting those in charge know; part of how he had kept this job for so long.

He waved without turning back as he moved on, to indicate to the Child that he had heard his promise, then weaved his way through the crowds to reach the next lamp. The gas caught promptly, but the man kept his lighter held aloft as a green glow from behind caught his attention.

Myopia peered back over his shoulder at the source of the glow, but missed the exact moment that the lamp exploded as a City Person with a curiously long neck and small roundish horns moved between him and the fixture serving as the lab rat of the experiment. Just as well, as the explosion released quite a bit of force; the man's antennae, seeming to have a mind of their own, curled back to hide behind his skull for refuge.

His head was still ringing from the sensory overload when he felt someone touch him.

"Huh?" The letters were somewhat misaligned, reflecting the state of the lamp-lighter's thoughts. "Oh! What is going on?" They gradually found a common line on the air to sit on. Myopia lowered his torch and glanced between this new Child and where the little scientist was now hidden from view by a wall of City Folk in various degrees of curiosity and upset.

"Science," Myopia replied finally and with a firm nod of certainty. "Science happened here".

Nios blinked and contemplated this answer before remembering to thank the man for answering his question. The antennae on top of the city person's head were doing interesting things, Nios noticed as he gave his thanks, and he held back an urge to ask. Not really knowing what the answer meant, Nios turned back to the source of the commotion.

"Oh my," he exclaimed, putting a hand to his cheek worriedly. "Was anyone hurt by science?"
PostPosted: Sun Mar 27, 2011 4:16 pm

"BOTHER IT ALL!" Dorian shouted angrily, kicking the lamp post once he'd regained himself. His clothes were smoking slightly and he seemed to have been covered in glowing soot. Sneezing in indignation at yet another failed experiment, Dorian brushed himself off, assuring everyone that the danger was over. He turned his nose up at anyone who started to write angrily, since they didn't have a real voice, he didn't have to bother reading angry type.

"Out of my way please. Oh, move over," Dorian snapped, shouldering passed City Folk in a flutter of dissipating smoke. He'd seen the lantern carried by the lamp lighter not too far away and he thought he should at least apologize.

When Dorian finally reached the Person with the feathery antennae, he tugged on the male's coat tails to get his attention. "Well, it's broken." He said by way of apology, eying the upset Child standing by the lamp lighter.

"I am not actually sure," Myopia replied to the Child with the black hat, his words coming out slowly as he looked back to the lamp he had skipped. He kept an eye out for capital letters, or other signs of commotion, but only saw more worried whispers.

Then the scientist shoved his way out to inform the lamp lighter of the damage, and the man nodded slowly. The various manuals were not clear on how to handle this specific sort of situation, but there would be routine paperwork of reporting a broken lamp involved, at least. "I trust no one was hurt?" he inquired to confirm, for the sake of the other Child, and for the other City Folk present.

He reached out with one finger to brush some of the glowing soot from the scientist's shoulder, and peered at it as the faint green color promplty faded to white, and the embers then faded to dark. "I shall report it as broken, and it will hopefully be taken care of before too long," he replied. "But, once the rest of the lamps have been lit here, might I ah, be able to conduct an interview regarding the nature of your experiment?"

Such authority he suddenly seemed to have over this whole situation. It was a strange feeling. Myopia wished to do it properly, but not by the book, either. Perhaps it helped that exploding light experiments were not exactly by the book to begin with?

"Hello. My name is Nios." He nodded amiably and tipped his hat towards the soot-covered Child eying him. Nios waited for the City Person to finish his bureaucratic questioning. "That was some rather interesting science," he commented with a tremulous laugh. His heartrate still hadn't slowed down after the initial bang. "I'd like to hear this interview too, if you don't mind."

He leaned down and picked up a light dusting of soot on his finger. It seemed to be harmless, but the way the faint green turned to dark embers vaguely reminded him of the plague's fading process. Could these embers be useful for light? he wondered.

"No, no," Dorian replied in reference to the question about anyone getting hurt. He did look around though and when it was clear that no one was screaming in pain, he nodded smartly. "Yes, no one was hurt. Not even me despite being in a fall of glass." He was oddly proud of this fact and couldn't help but smile. He watched as he was dusted off and how the dust just vanished, wondering how he could keep it ignited indefinitely.

When the Person starting speaking about an interview and something about scientific blah-blah-blah, Dorian quickly lost interest. He didn't even know exactly what he was trying to do or if it would actually work. What REALLY interested him was the other Child across from him.

"Yeah, sure. An interview sounds find. Maybe you can give a good word for me for the board of the scientific society." he said to the City Person before nodding at the Child named Nios. "I'm Dorian and I dunno about interesting. Half the time I blow things up like you just saw. Do either of you know anything about science?" His voice was half hopeful, but he didn't meet too many people interested in science.

Nios shook his head slowly. "No, not like this..." He hesitated. There were mentions of the word in his book, but it was hard to believe that the flash of light and the bang and the shattered glass lying on the ground could have been related to the quiet fade of the plague. "I've never seen anything like it. My story mentions science, but only in relation to the plague. Do you do things like this often?"

"Aah, I do not write for scientific papers," Myopia clarified, words wavering slightly, as he hoped that would not deter the scientist from revealing his information. "Good magazines on general knowledge and goings-on, however," he quickly assured the Child. "No doubt some of the scientists read it, or at least the most brilliant ones do."

Then he swapped his torch to his other hand, and offered his now-available right hand first to Dorian and then to Nios for introductions. "Myopia," he pronounced with care, to show off how lovely the letters appeared in combination. "And I like science best when it is out there trying new things, I believe," he added. "Research seems dreadfully tedious, retreading the same stretch of science over and over again. More experiments, I say!"

"... As long as they do not break too many lamps too quickly." Realization settled on the lamp-lighter that he would most likely have to be the one to clean up the broken glass, since he was the one from the Lighting Department who was already here. Although really, now that it had been done once, any future lamp explosions would only be copycat ventures. How passé.

"If you will excuse me, I must finish lighting the square, then tend to the mess," Myopia added, sparing Nios a wary glance at the mention of a plague. "After that, well." He pondered for a moment. "Everyone does interviews at cafes, but I am hungry and I suspect you are as well, since it seems such bodily needs are a trend that cannot be broken...."
