Rei was in good spirits today. After talking to the pretty cheetah girl the day before, he wasn’t feeling quite as lonely in the vastness of the Rogue Lands savannah. Sure, there were many little things that reminded him of the Pridelands and Mzuza (“that pebble looks just like the one Mzu wears around her neck” or "that mountain looks a little like Pride Rock") but all in all, he had a cheerful disposition and he didn’t mind showing it. Soon he’d have to hunt again but he could still travel for a bit longer. To where the orange lion didn’t really know but right now… forward seemed to be a good idea.

Berfortoto practically skipped through the pridelands humming a little tune he had made up. He didn't know why he was humming and skipping exactly, but he had woken up this morning in a particularly good mood and had a nice meal of gazelle to go with it all. And best of all, it was rather nice day to just stay out until sunset. And since it was pretty far from the end of the day...the lion grinned, perhaps he could chat up a few dames.

If he could find them that is. The male stopped, kicking up a could of dirt around his paws as he looked around for any sign of life. He spotted an orange figure in the distance, and his smile grew wider. Even more good fortune today. Quickly shaking out his mane and stretching himself out, he silently padded over to the figure, wanting to know what the female was like before plunging in.

Rei took one quick look around him, the feeling of being watched suddenly strong in his mind. He didn’t see anything at first so he simply dismissed as a product of his imagination. When a bird shouted an alarm cry somewhere on his right, however, the orange lion’s head turned to find the source of the disturbance.

Let it be a girl. A girl. A girl. Drat, it’s a male… Oh well. It was still company.

He didn't call out to the other lion and decided to wait for the other to come closer though Rei did try to look as non-threatening as possible. He smiled.

Berfortoto was doing quite a good job of sneaking in his opinion. Except for that stupid bird that had flown away squawking everywhere all was good.

Until he saw the 'female' turn back.

"Are you kidding me?" the male practically moaned, but quickly shut his mouth hoping the other hadn't heard him. Straightening himself out, he approached the other, sensing that the other meant no danger. He gave a grin in return, "Uh, hey." Berfortoto greeted the other, stopping a few feet away from the orange male. "I'm uh, Berfortoto. Nice to meet you." Well not really. He had been expecting a female.

Well, Rei did hear the moan and his head titled to the side, giving the male a very distinctive “What?” look as he drew near. Regardless of that that initial reaction, the dark lion did seem friendly and willing to have a little chat which immediately put Rei at ease with the stranger.

“Are you sure?” Rei said with a laugh when the other introduced himself. He couldn’t help but to feel the other lion was somewhat… disappointed? Was he expecting someone else at this spot? “I’m Rei. Nice to meet you, too. That’s quite the mouthful, your name.”

Rei could see some hints of color in the lion’s back from where he was standing but what really caught his attention were the bright sky-blue eyes of the other male. “That little bird gave you away.” He grinned, as well.

Berfortoto shrugged, "Compared to your name." he chuckled with the male, giving a mocking glare to the distance, "That dumb bird." he shook his head with a small sigh.

He gave Rei one look over, "Nice eyes." he said, smiling, "Purple's an awfully beautiful color on you." he said jokingly. At least the male was friendly even though he wasn't a female like he had initially thought. "Ah...well..." Berfortoto shrugged, "I kinda thought you were...you know. A female." he finished awkwardly. He cleared his throat, "But it doesn't matter cause you're not a bad guy anyways." he nodded in reassurance.

It was easy to laugh around this male, Rei decided. He tried looking at his own eyes – which, obviously, was impossible – and ended up with the silliest expression, crooked eyes fixed on the tip of Rei’s own nose. It was uncomfortable and he quickly shook his head with a chuckle. He was alright, Ber… would he mind if Rei called him Berto? Or Toto? Yeah, maybe it was too soon for nicknames.

“Yours are quite striking though.” Rei said in return, thinking about something he could say about the other lion. “Oh, that looks like a butterfly on your back…! Not a girly one though.” He added the last part quickly with a playful grin. He had seen strangers with butterfly markings – males and females – but they were usually more complex, detailed… girly.

“I know exactly what you mean!” Rei said suddenly, delighted to find a kindred spirit in the infinite savannah, eying Berfortoto intently. “I saw a cheetah girl yesterday and I was hoping my luck would continue. Oh well, you’re alright.” He laughed again, the other male’s initial reaction finally understood and infinitely more amusing.

Berfortoto let out a loud laugh, shaking his head at Rei. "Oh that?" he turned his head a little to see his back. Well he couldn't really cause his mane was in the way, "I got it from my mother so I guess it's pretty girly." he winked at Rei, "But thanks. I'd do me too." he couldn't help but feel a little full of himself. He better deflate his head and ego before Rei got the wrong idea.

"Oooh! Really?" suddenly very much interested. "What lovely thing we have in common!" he chuckled. "Ahh. A lovely cheetah girl. I am sorry I am not as wonderful as that." Berfortoto hung his head in shame. "Tell me. What does she look like? Perhaps I could help you find her." he certainly hoped he wasn't talking about that female cheetah terror that he had met the other day.

"I'm afraid you're not my type." The orange lion said with mock sadness before he chuckled. Rei, whose bright and open nature had never got him involved in a “misunderstanding” yet, laughed out loud, not feeling the least bit awkward when the other male joked. He actually sat down, looking exactly as he felt which was completely at ease. Yeah, his new friend was no girl but he was certainly fun.

“Oh, man. She was cheetah so, you know, slim. Tan and white with black spots and stripes mostly. But she had some red on her head.” He considered thoughtfully, raising his head to look at the sky as he tried to remember the cheetah clearly. “She has beautiful green eyes with markings around them.”

“Slausale, that ‘s her name. She was a bit jumpy though.” He admitted, remembering how hard it had been to start a conversation at first. “I don’t think she was very fond of lions.” He laughed, not the least bit bothered by the fact. Jumpy females were a common occurence in the rogue lands. “She’s that way but I’m going in the opposite direction. How about you, any luck?”

"Oh that's a shame." Berfortoto looked to the ground, "I was growing particularly fond of you." he pretended to look heartbroken. It was rather nice to be able to jokingly talk to someone like this. Meaning everything as a joke. He would have loved to do it with a female, but then they always got offended and left him in the dust.

He raised his brows nodding in agreement, "Woaaah. She's a looker." he gave Rei a sly smile, "I wish you luck in wooing her then. Whatcha gonna do to her when you see her next? Romantic dinner of water buffalo? Look at the stars?" Berfortoto even nudged Rei slightly and whispered, "You gonna get that love flowin' eh?" he grinned, actually quite glad for the other male that had found a nice female. "Slausale..." he said her name slowly, savoring the sound of the 's' on his tongue. "She's probably as beautiful as her name." he nodded in approval. "That's a shame. Maybe she has an exception for you."

"Who, me?" the gray male couldn't help but roll his eyes, "I've had no such luck." he sighed, "I met a cheetah the other day, she was hot you know? Nice red and yellow going together. But oh man." Berfortoto shook his head again, "She's nuts. She's a terror. She just came out of nowhere and just killed a gazelle and gave it to me." he was still confused over the whole ordeal with Zatzia.

Rei wore a mischievous grin very suited for his complicit role in this conversation as Berfortoto described his next “date”. In truth, even if he was roaming these lands searching for fun and excitement – or just anything that would make him forget what he’d left behind – he didn’t think he’d ever have a lot of chances with Slausale. She probably needed to meet a few more friendly lions before she could really trust anyone.

“I doubt it. You’d probably get better luck, though. Tell her you're Rei’s friend if you see her.” And he laughed again and it surprised him how easy it was to fool around with the grey lion. Though he wasn't really sure saying such a thing would actually help or hinder the other lion when it came to the jumpy cheetah.

“What?” Rei shook his head, trying to piece Berfortoto’s words together in his mind, searching for a different meaning to them – because the first didn’t really make that much sense. “She just gave it to you? Why?”

"Haha. I will." Berfortoto nodded, chuckling. He wondered if the female cheetah that Rei had met was really so jumpy. Was she just nervous and scared of something? Whatever it was, if he ever did meet her, maybe he would help her find the reason why she was so jumpy. But first, he would just have to meet her if he ever did.

"But you should've seen the look in her eyes." the male said, his eyes going wide, "She was a maniac. She even told me she just likes killing things. Not even to eat them, just to kill them. I mean it was a free meal and all, but..." he trailed off, still trying to comprehend.

“That’s crazy! She likes killing things?” Rei looked perplexed. Such an attitude would’ve been severely frowned upon by his mother who still followed the teachings of the Pridelands. As well as by… well, anyone with common sense. “What a waste… at least you got a gazelle, huh? Maybe I can get lucky, too.”

He laughed, thinking that a meeting with the crazy maniac wouldn’t be so bad, after all.

“Well, if you’re really interested… Slausale is that way.” Rei pointed his chin towards the last place where he’d seen the pretty cheetah. “Less than half a day away if you keep a good pace. She didn’t look like she was going anywhere so I’m guessing she’s still there.”

"Yeah. She's just a nutcase. I guess if you ever see here you should just stay clear. Or maybe you could stick around and get a free meal." he grinned, "Whatever floats your boat." Berfortoto too, pointed with his chin, "I think Zatzia was somewhere over there last time I saw her. Maybe if you wander around there you'll get a free meal."

"Woah. Thanks mate." Berfortoto was thankful towards Rei, "I'll be sure to loosen her up for you. You can count on me." he said, and if he could he would've given the guy a thumbs-up. Taking this as a cue to leave, Berfortoto started to head out in the direction that Rei had pointed him in."I guess I'll see you around, eh?" he smiled, nodding his head slightly as a goodbye gesture.

“Hey, be a gentleman.” He warned the grey lion but all pretenses of seriousness were easily dismissed by the wide grin Rei couldn’t seem to shake off.

“Zatzia, mmm… why not?” he laughed, nodding at Berfortoto before heading in the direction the grey lion had showed him. “Yeah, hope so. But if we don’t, it was nice meeting you.” And he really meant it this time.
