Masahiro awoke feeling warmer than usual. A good beam of sunlight, perhaps? He must have found a good meditation spot. It deserved repeated use. He made a lazy note of this as his mind slowly started back up. His body eventually joined it, one leg then the next stretching. Arch back and check every vertebrae was aligned. Then, and only then, did he open his eye.

Hmm, not a meditation spot. A lounge room of some kind greeted him, coffee table a short distance away, a tv against the far wall. Where on earth was he...?

Memory returned, and with it last night's activities. Right. Destiny City. Assigned senshi. Girl with nightmares.

Hiro turned a neat circle, sitting up to stare at his still-sleeping charge. The sun was up, Hiro was up... clearly this girl needed to be up, too. Hiro wanted breakfast, for one thing. For another, it was hard to 'meet' someone who was unconscious.

Padding closer, Hiro stuck his face close to the human's. His whiskers tingled as they rubbed against her cheeks. Close enough to go cross-eyed if he'd only had two eyes, Hiro opened his mouth... and licked Kaia on the nose.

He sat back and waited expectantly.

After such a long night, Kaia thought she deserved some rest. Every inch of her body was stiff and aching, particularly the bruises that had bloomed on her forehead and shoulder blade and she wouldn't see the affects of her improved healing abilities for at least another day. It did a lot for her, but it couldn't do everything. When she first felt something tickling her cheek, she merely groan and tried to bat it away. An attempt to roll over was met with a weight on her stomach that she hadn't been aware of before and that was followed by the feeling of wet sandpaper on her nose.

Her mind's ability to adjust her dreams to these surroundings quickly faltered, and she found herself blinking wearily against the bright sun that flooded the apartment in the early morning. At first she simply stretched out her arms, trying to chase away the stiffness, but then wiggled a little in an attempt to rock the heavy stone on her abdomen away. Once her mind registered that she hadn't fallen asleep with something heavy sleeping on her, she sobered up a little and snapped her eyes down to whatever it was.

Well, she certainly hadn't expected to see a cat.

At first her mouth started to curve upwards, as if she might baby talk it into getting down, until her still drowsy eyes saw the star plastered to its forehead. That said all she needed it to.

"What are you doing in my apartment?" It was not exactly..hostile, but it was not nice, especially when it was paired with that almost-sneer on her lips. She was already reaching beneath the blanket to dig her henshin pen out of her pocket, which meant the cat had about five seconds to explain itself before she powered up and gave it the beating of a lifetime.

How had one of these things found her anyway?

Rest was for people who had fed their cats. Even if they had only just acquired them, and unknowingly at that. Because Hiro had decided that he would keep Alkaid. She was warm and comfy to sleep next to (or on), she'd been ready to smile at the sight of a cat, and even if her sudden mood change was a tiny bit hurtful, at least she was observant and quick to react. Those were good senshi traits. Hiro had no more objections to being assigned to this girl.

... Though there went his plan to meow and act cute and kitty-like until after food had arrived.

"The Destiny City battalion must have even less Guardian Cats than I'd heard, if your first thought is that I'm with the White Moon," Hiro said with an arched eye. He stepped off Kaia's stomach, settling himself on the arm of the couch. Sitting straight with his tail wrapped around his legs, he looked as regal as a beat-up high breed cat could (pretty damn regal, ignore the battle wounds, I am royalty, really).

It was good that Alkaid wasn't the overly trusting sort, but really, if she could do less of the glaring and more of the breakfast getting?

"I've been assigned to you, Sailor Alkaid. It's not a post I object to." He titled his head to one side, flicking the tip of his tail where it rested over his paws. The one teal eye widened and blinked several times, all cute and harmless and itty-bitty-kitty deserves love (and food). "Of course, it's not best discussed on an empty stomach."

Hint, hint. Meow, meow.

Alkaid's tensed muscles began to unwind slowly as the cat drew out his story. Cats with the negaverse? She'd certainly heard of them in passing but she had never actually seen a cat that belonged to the cause. Looking at him, though, he certainly didn't seem like the prissy white moon type of guardian cat.

She sat up as he crawled off of her body and sat proudly on the arm of the sofa, her eyes following every movement he made. He seemed safe enough but she was still a little suspicious. Why would she be assigned a guardian cat, and why now? The last twenty-four hours had been a blur between the ambush, dealing with Khal, and talking to Zac before she finally passed out. Was it really necessary to wake her up with this, perhaps when she was least trusting?

"Alright," she said with a sigh, pushing the blankets off of her body and letting them sit in a heap at the other end of the sofa. "At least come into the kitchen with me so you don't wake up.." she threw a brief glance at the bedroom door, behind which she knew Khal slept. What did she call him though? "My roommate." She settled on the word, though it tasted odd on her lips. Khal was many things but her 'roommate' did not seem quite appropriate. "I don't want to try and explain talking cats to him right now." After last night she didn't think he needed any more surprises, period.

She pushed herself up and began to head to the kitchen, though she paused as she passed him where he sat. The fingers of one hand twitched, as if she were trying to decide if she should pet him or maybe just scoop him up and carry him with her. It seemed a little demeaning though - after all, he wasn't just a simple house cat. "This way," she said finally, curling her fingers into loose fists and passing through an archway into another room - presumably the kitchen.

She opened the refrigerator and glanced over the meager supplies she had bought so far. What did a guardian cat even eat? She began to pull some things out and set them on the counter, then turned the oven on to preheat before she began to rummage around for utensils (as quietly as possible).

Food! Hiro leapt off the couch, a graceful orange streak arcing through the air. He trotted after Kaia, close on her heels but being careful not to trip her up.

Best of all, once they were in the kitchen, Kaia started pulling out normal food. Of course she had no reason to have cat food stocked, but at least she wasn't going straight for cheap canned tuna or something.

He showed his appreciation by winding around her ankles once or twice, headbutting her gently. A soft purr built up in his throat - completely involuntary, he swore. It wasn't a good idea to accidentally kill the person making the food, so Hiro stepped back and gave Kaia some space to work. Of course, this left him on the ground, feeling at a distinct height disadvantage. How could he supervise from down here, let alone talk to his new senshi?

It may have been bad manners, but with no other options, Hiro began eyeing off the bench. New places were always interesting. After a few raises and drops, Hiro leapt. He overestimated slightly. With a bit too much force behind the jump, he skidded along the bench before slowing to a rather undignified halt. He immediately adopted the 'nothing to see here, move along' aloof expression that cats had mastered eons ago. Padding to the end of the bench, far enough away that he wouldn't drop stray fur into the food, he lifted a paw and licked it studiously.

The teal eye peeked over the raised paw at Kaia. Was his humiliation forgotten now? Excellent. The paw dropped and he peered at the emerging foods.

"As long as you don't try to feed me cat food, anything should be fine," he said. A Mauvian's stomach could handle a fair bit more than an Earth cat's, after all. No need to worry over what might be poison for a normal feline.

Alkaid wobbled a little as the cat began to wind himself between her legs, reaching out quickly to steady herself with one hand as the other tried to balance a half-empty jug of milk that threatened to slip from her grasp and crash on the kitchen floor. She gave him a grim stare with pressed, thin lips before she set the jug on the counter too and shut the fridge door with a foot.

"Well, I don't have any catfood anyway. You're lucky you didn't come a few weeks ago or there wouldn't even be anything at all." She'd taken quite a few trips to the store to and restocked the kitchen - it had been nothing but empty cabinets when she'd first arrived. She ducked under a cabinet and came up with a frying pan just in time to see the cat skid along on his butt. She immediately froze, afraid he might go right off the end of the bench, but he caught himself instead. She didn't say a word, she just shook her head and reached up to set the frying pan on the stove and flipped a burner on.

"So what's your name, anyway?" It was still awkward for her to talk to.. a cat. She'd Lyra and the tiny kitten-like guardian before she had been recruited to the negaverse, but even knowing they existed didn't exactly make it less awkward. So, instead of trying to turn around and have a face-to-face conversation with him, she opened a square paper package of sausage and dumped it with a sizzle into the frying pan she'd dug out.

"My timing wasn't up to me," Hiro protested. There'd been a lot of other factors involved. Several other people, in fact, the ones who made the decisions of where a Guardian Cat was best suited and to which senshi.

He gave Kaia an accusing stare, the closest he could come to a pout. She really didn't seem very happy to have him at all. It was a trying time, he understood, but she couldn't see the slightest silver lining to Hiro's arrival? He sighed. Well, at least she was cooking. That was a step in the right direction.

Ears and tail twitched as Kaia asked for his name. At least she was taking an interest - that was a good sign. "Masahiro," he said, drawing himself up his full seated height and puffing out his chest. "You can just call me Hiro, if that's easier." Or Your Majesty, Sir, Handsome Devil, Oh Great And Wise Feline, or several other equally appropriate monikers.

He stared back at his senshi. "Hmm. You may need to return to favour. I can sense that you are Super Sailor Alkaid, but Mauvian senses unfortunately don't include civilian information."

Kaia sighed as she heard the tone of his voice, but remained where she was, slowly scooping the sausage out of the frying pan with a slotted spoon. For a long few moments she said nothing to him, instead concentrating on her cooking. She flipped the oven on to preheat and began measuring milk, butter and flour into the frying pan. Once she had whisked it into a froth and was content to let it set there and thicken, she opened a can of biscuits and finally looked up at him.

"Hiro is much easier, I must say," she managed a small smile as she peeled apart the pre-made biscuits and set them in lines on a baking sheet closer to him. "My name now is Kaia, Kaia Delaney." There was no smile at that name though, it was said with as much feeling as if she'd been ordering fast food. There was no emotion for her in that name.

She leaned down to stick the biscuits in the oven as the red light clicked off, gave the thickening gravy a swift stir, and then turned back to look at him. She weighed him in her gaze a long time as she leaned against the counter, folding her hands together and letting them fall against the tops of her thighs.

"I am not ungrateful," she began, quiet and a little unsure. "I'm glad to have you here, to have someone here that will understand me finally amidst this army, but.." She stopped, chewing at her lip and turning to stir the gravy once more, returning the cooked sausage to it and mixing it in. When she finally turned back to Hiro, there was a noticeable frown to her lips.

"It is just a really rough time, now. For me, for those I care about, for all of us."

If cats could frown in sympathy, Hiro would have. Instead, Kaia would have to make do with his one teal eye softening and his ears drooping somewhat.

"So I've heard," he said. It was worrying to him that members of the Negaverse had been captured, simply as a fellow member of the organisation. But knowing that his senshi had been there and nearly suffered the same fate made it worse. There was nothing he could do for Kaia. "I am sorry for your friends... but I'm glad that you are safe."

Hopefully that wasn't too insensitive. But Hiro had just arrived and decided that his new assignment was actually someone he wanted to work with. How terrible if would have been to arrive in Destiny City only to learn that his senshi was missing, possibly dead.

He tried to reassure the young woman. "If they were kidnapped, it was for a purpose. Information, possibly. But they'll still be alive." At least until the information was retrieved, or the senshi grew tired of failing to retrieve it. But... that might not be the best thing to tell Kaia.

Still, if there was one thing Hiro was good at, it was gathering information. "I'll help you look for them," he said decisively. "We'll shake some senshi down until they're begging to tell us everything they know."

Turn about was fair play, after all.

Sympathy was something she was not quite used to dealing with. She had friends in the negaverse, sure, but there were certain protocols that kept most of the soldiers from caring too deeply about a corrupt and her feelings. To have it so suddenly from a cat she had only just met was strange to her. At the same time, though, she realized that he was more like her than any of the negaversers could be. He too had once been a part of the white kingdom.

"Thank you for the concern, and for attempting to make me feel better," she smiled, half-heartedly, and turn away from him to stir the gravy again. She was silent for a long time after that, holding onto the handle of the whisk and staring down at the bubbling depths of the light gravy. "I know there's a limited amount of time to find them before.."

Even from behind it was easy to tell that she was drawing a deep breath. Her shoulders rose and a long hiss of air blew past her lips. Knowing things was easier than saying them, she knew that, but she also knew that she needed to suck it up if she was going to help anyone make any kind of planning. They had to do this expecting the worst possible outcome.

She decided to distract herself then by opening the oven and checking the biscuits. They were done to a perfect golden brown so she simply reached for the oven mitt she'd placed on the counter and pull them out, setting them aside for a few minutes and letting them cool. "The food's almost ready," she gave the gravy one last stir and turned around to look at him again.

"A friend of mine came by last night, I think he has plans to start search teams. I thought I might be working with him, or going it alone, but it's nice to know I have you to rely on now." She smiled then, a true, honest one, even though her next words were not truly.. comforting. "I'm not the best senshi alone though, my powers are purely support."

Hiro puffed up as Kaia spoke of relying on him. He was pleased that she recognised his worth and couldn't help a quiet purr from escaping. The kitchen echoed with the tiny rumble.

It cut off when she mentioned the food was nearly done. His body twitched with the effort to remain in place and not trot across the bench to inspect the food. Mmm, food. The tip of his tail flicked back and forth, the most obvious sign of his eagerness.

He waved a paw at the talk of powers. "I know," he said calmly. Of course he could sense her power - how else would a Guardian Cat be able to tell a senshi the correct phrase to shout, or who they were (both planet and power sphere). He wasn't phased by the fact that she was a senshi of Guidance and not of Flaming Fireballs From The Sky. "But powers aren't all a senshi has."

There were plenty of other weapons at a senshi's disposal. Fists and feet. Random objects nearby that could be used to whack people. It wasn't as though the Negaverse's Lieutenants had any powers, after all, and they still managed to hold their own and survive (most of them) to be promoted.

"I hear you're not so shabby in a fight," he said. "But we can work on that later."

For now... food!

Kaia turned away from him and reached up to grab a bowl from one of the upper cabinets. She set it down and grabbed a couple of biscuits, ripping them into small, bite-size pieces and then ladled a generous scoop of thick sausage gravy over them. She reached into a drawer, grabbed a fork, and simply mixed it all together well - then set it down beside him so he could reach.

She wasn't sure if the biscuits would be his thing, but it had meat and a milk-based gravy! That was sure to be a hit with him, right?

"There's plenty more," she said, though she was reaching up to pull down two more bowls. She was hungry herself and she expected that the smell of home-cooked food was going to have Khaldun sleep walking into the kitchen any moment now. One would think that boy had never had a good meal in his life, the way he shoveled food down his throat.

She ripped up her biscuits in the same fashion she had done for Hiro, then got herself a good portion of gravy and pulled up a barstool to sit at the island beside him.

"You're right, I know. The best Senshi I knew relied more on their fists than their powers." Even if it was something she'd known, his compliment made her beam. Had anyone told her she was good at this before? Probably not, at least not since she'd signed her name to the negaverse.

She scooped up a bite of gravy and biscuits and shoveled it into her mouth, but her free hand reached out and gave Hiro a quick scratch between the ears. Guardian or not, he was still a cat.

Hiro's nose twitched appreciatively as Kaia readied a bowl for him. It smelled so gooood. If he'd been down on the floor, he would have been twining around her ankles anxiously. Luckily for the bones in both their bodies, he was still on the bench and so did nothing except leap to his feet as if that would bring the meal to him faster.

When Kaia placed the bowl down, Hiro darted forward, head into his food. In his defense it had been about a day since he'd eaten - too much excitement regarding his new assignment to find the time to hunt or beg off someone (and begging was just degrading - it was for dogs).

He wasn't a messy pig of an eater, Hiro hastened to point out. After swallowing his first bit of biscuit, he licked his muzzle and chirped out a very happy, "Thanks! It's good." He ducked before down for another mouthful.

"Well, a senshi's power can have limited use," Hiro pointed out. Or like Alkaid, be a supportive power instead of an offensive one. "No sense relying on just one weapon. The best fighters can adapt and use whatever is at hand."

Another few bites... And then he had to stop and purr loudly as Kaia scritched between his ears just right. Oh yes, he definitely had himself the very best of senshi right here.

"What's your roommate like?" he asked when the petting paused. "One of us?"

Hopefully so, otherwise a talking cat would be difficult to explain.

She had simply been nodding along as he spoke, taking small bites of her biscuits and listening to what he was saying. He was right of course, she could not argue with that. She was a support senshi and, as such, she had learned physical fighting to keep herself from being completely destroyed by the negaverse. It was a useful skill to have now that she was fighting senshi who often simply relied on their powers.

She smiled as he purred at the small scratching, glad to know that even though he had an intelligence superior to most average house cats, his guilty pleasures were still the same.

She withdrew her hand and took another bite of her biscuit, but as he spoke again she stopped midchew. She looked up quickly at the bedroom door as if she expected Khal to walk out any moment, then she swallowed the food and glanced back at Hiro in a hurry.

"Yes, he's a Captain but it's not.." she paused and pursed her lips then, trying to decide the best way to describe it. "He's had a bit of a mental break down and he doesn't remember much of anything." She set her fork in her still half-full bowl and folded her hands together, steepling her arms over the counter.

"I've been slowly teaching him again, but I don't know if he's ready for uhm.. you." She tried to smile as she said it, in an apologetic way, but it still sounded insulting to her ears. It wasn't that she didn't like Hiro, but Khal was not the most stable teenager on the planet right now.

"He's fragile," was all she could end up saying in the end. Then she picked her fork back up and took another bite of her biscuits, mostly just to occupy herself.

Hiro frowned to hear that Kaia's flatmate, a Captain, had suffered a mental breakdown. One ear twitched but he decided against asking for details. It sounded very raw, at least from the way Kaia spoke of it. And so while he was concerned over what could do that to a Captain, he knew better than to prod at open wounds. He could always find out more himself by keeping his ears open.

He continued munching at his breakfast while he thought. Raising his head, Hiro said, "I can pretend to be a normal cat for a while, if that will make things easier."

It wasn't his preferred way of doing things, but at least it wasn't forever (as it might have been had her flatmate been a normal human civilian). And he could still talk with Kaia when the flatmate was sleeping or in a different room.

"So what are our plans for today?" he asked after a few more bites. Why yes, he was automatically including himself in whatever Kaia had planned.
