The ligi. The ligi were the cause of all the misery in the Ashnai'le. Dada'ntombe was absolutely certain of that. They'd originally been a rank to protect the Shatkona, but they'd become corrupt with power. Now Sahen, her sweet grandfather, was their prisoner. They'd hurt him, keeping him from his family for so long, forcing him to take the blame for their actions. He was a powerful lion, but he couldn't stand up to them all by himself. And no one believed her when she told them he wasn't really bad. What did they know? He'd given a scared little cub (and her siblings, never mind that they were his own grandcubs) shelter from the vicious lions, both ligi and the ligi's bitter victims Given them love, and wealth, and food.
Those damn ligi. She'd grown from a naive child into a wise lioness, and she'd become strong. Soon, maybe, she and Sahen could start trying to take back their lands. But they alone wouldn't be enough. Not unless they could find the ligi's weakness. Maybe a clash of members, or matters they would disagree over and be made to fight about. Perhaps even they could sway some to rejoin them. Surely some of the ligi had been pressured into joining ,and would gladly see things return to the old ways.
That was why Dada was tailing one of them, right now. A young male, she'd seen him around often. His name was Jabari, and she'd spotted him and Sahen talking one day from up a tree, where she'd been resting unnoticed. She hadn't heard what they'd said, but maybe...if Sahen could trust him...this could be the link she was looking for.

His life sucked. He had decided that a while back, back when he had first been forced to become a Ligi, but this just tripled the problem. The Shatkona's daughter was about as stealthy as an elephant. Was he supposed to pretend he didn't notice her tromping around? Who had trained this girl? Whoever it was needed fired!
Or maybe she hadn't been trained, he thought. She was the Shatkona's little darling, spoiled and pampered. She probably thought she was born stealthy, or something. The thought made him snort. Oh well, he thought. He might as well lead her on a little chase. A bit of exercise and a view of what the rest of the pride looked like might do her some good. With that thought he turned and headed into the pride. The paths were remarkably empty, but he could smell them hiding in the shadows, watching as he went past.
